Road Network Conflation is concerned with the unique identification of geographical entities across different road networks. These entities range from elemental structures such as crossings represented by nodes in the network to aggregated high-level entities such as topological edges or sequences of edges. Based on topological, geometrical and semantic information, the road networks to be conflated are investigated in order to identify similarities as well as differences. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for conflating road networks of digital vector maps which iteratively employs multiple matching steps on different hierarchies of structures in order to progressively find, evaluate and refine possible solutions by recognizing and exploiting topological and geometrical relationships. The introduced algorithms are applied to real-world maps and validated against ground truth data retrieved from visual inspection. Validation shows that our approach leads to good results exhibiting high success rates in rural regions and provides a reasonable starting point for further refining in dense urban areas, where special heuristics are required in order to tackle difficult matching cases.

One important issue in developing assistive navigation systems for people with disability is the accuracy and relevancy of the systems' knowledge bases from the perspective of these special user groups. The theory of affordances coupled with computer-based simulation offers a solution for automating the extraction of the relevant information from readily available sources-architectural floor plans. Simulation of movement in a wheelchair can be used to compute the accessible space of an indoor environment by comparing the degree of match between geometrical demands of navigation and the relevant physical properties of the environment. We also investigate what constitutes the right level of representation of the environment and adopt the grid graph model as suitable both for accessibility computation and for deriving higher-level networks of places and their connections that facilitate orientation and user-system interaction.

The objective of the presented paper is to compare two spatial modelling approaches for the boundary surfaces of a geological subsurface structure, where the exact depth locations of the modelled horizons are known only at sampled locations in the borehole intersections. The paper aims at two approaches: (1) traditional sequential modelling of each horizon or the layer thicknesses separately and (2) global approach based on multivariate modelling of each zone thicknesses simultaneously to keep the relationships between the internal zones and the total formation thickness of a subsurface structure. The experimental comparison of the sequential and global methods is performed on a simulated artificial model of the geological subsurface structure, which is used as a true reality, completely known throughout the estimated area. The model is used to compare obtained results of the different estimation approaches. The estimations are performed using an isotopic set of the depth and zone thickness variables, derived from the simulated geological structure.

Map matching of the GPS trajectory serves the purpose of recovering the original route on a road network from a sequence of noisy GPS observations. It is a fundamental technique to many Location Based Services. However, map matching of a low sampling rate on urban road network is still a challenging task. In this paper, the characteristics of Conditional Random Fields with regard to inducing many contextual features and feature selection are explored for the map matching of the GPS trajectories at a low sampling rate. Experiments on a taxi trajectory dataset show that our method may achieve competitive results along with the success of reducing model complexity for computation-limited applications.

In this paper we investigate the display and communication of indoor routing instructions via small maps, map-like graphics and non-photorealistic presentations of interior spaces. Our goal is to elaborate on questions like, "how can we provide an optimal depiction of the navigation information so that the user is able to find the destination within an indoor environment? The destination could be for example a classroom or a particular office in a university environment. We provide a case study for indoor routing maps within the Technical University Munich's main building. Currently available data on floor footprints, points of interests (POIs), indoor-landmarks and the routing graph for the building are used to implement a routing service. The routing information is displayed on a smart phone implemented in the Windows 7.8 operating system. Designs of different ways to display routing instructions on smart phone displays are investigated. Experiences for building up the map design for this particular indoor routing system can be transferred to other buildings and provide a basis for the design ideas of indoor routing maps.

Sensor data streams are the basis for monitoring systems which infer complex information like the excess of a pollution threshold for a region. Since sensor observations tend to be arbitrarily distributed in space and time, an appropriate interpolation method is necessary. Within geostatistics, kriging represents a powerful and established method, but is computation intensive for large datasets. We propose a method to exploit the advantages of kriging while limiting its computational complexity. Large datasets are divided into sub-models, computed separately and merged again in accordance with their kriging variances. We apply the approach to a synthetic model scenario in order to investigate its quality and performance.

Small water reservoirs are important part of the landscape that is changing under various anthropogenic and natural processes. Knowledge of the actual parameters, such as actual water reservoir storage capacity or the amount of sediment accumulated in the water reservoir is crucial for the further operation and for the fulfilling of the water reservoir purposes. Data collection and processing for obtaining of the actual information is executable as non-contact mapping with the use of sonar and GNSS receiver. This paper describes the experience of the Department of Landscape Engineering with the use of this method for the data collection and data processing to the format of raster and vector digital elevation models of water reservoir bottom. Achieved average accuracy in the creation of these models is in the interval of 13-29 mm. These parameters make the use of non-contact mapping the available, accurate and quick option for the surveying in the water management.

Dam break simulation has been quite long established module in the hydraulic modeling industrial standards, which are represented in particular by the software packages USACE HEC-RAS and DHI MIKE 11 worldwide including the Czech Republic. Coincidentally, at this level, both previously mentioned hydraulic models are using identical numerical solvers DAMBRK and WSPRO. It can be expected that the use of identical schematization of the river channels and technical objects together with the parameterization of dam body and its geometric parameters will give the comparable results of hydraulic simulations. When the same approach is applied for the reservoir and dam schematization together with its operational rules, the simulations using the identical solver DAMBRK will produce almost same results. Finally, the differences of the generated floodlakes by these particular models will be most affected by the accuracy and resolution DMT/DMR and partly by the different simulation concepts of water flow in the inundation area within each individual model. Because of the extreme situations of the "dam break" are occurring rarely (in the Czech Republic with larger water works only once), the calibration data is virtually absent. It is certainly not an argument to tell, that the simulation apparatus for HPPS and POVIS in the scope of the crisis management and planning was not prepared for these situations. A sensitivity analysis is among the crucial conditions of the successful modelling. This paper focuses particularly on the impact of DTM accuracy on dam break simulations.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) provides geolocation to a considerable number of applications in domains such as agriculture, commerce, transportation and tourism. Operational factors such as signal noise or the lack of direct vision from the receiver to the satellites, reduce the GPS geolocation accuracy. Urban canyons are a good example of an environment where continuous GPS signal reception may fail. For some applications, the lack of geolocation accuracy, even if happening for a short period of time, may lead to undesired results. For instance, consider the damages caused by the failure of the geolocation system in a city tour-bus transportation that shows location-sensitive data (historical/cultural data, publicity) in its screens as it passes by a location. This work presents an innovative approach for keeping geolocation accurate in mobile systems that rely mostly on GPS, by using computer vision to help providing geolocation data when the GPS signal becomes temporarily low or even unavailable. Captured frames of the landscape surrounding the mobile system are analysed in real-time by a computer vision algorithm, trying to match it with a set of geo-referenced images in a preconfigured database. When a match is found, it is assumed that the mobile system current location is close to the GPS location of the corresponding matched point. We tested this approach several times, in a real world scenario, and the results achieved evidence that geolocation can effectively be improved for scenarios where GPS signal stops being available.
