In the face of a global food crisis and climate change, ensuring access to water resources becomes a critical concern for human activities. The Maghreb region, including Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, is particularly exposed to ecological vulnerabilities. The environmental degradation in this region has already led to adverse effects on the well-being of populations and hindered economic development. While demographic projections provide some clarity, the uncertainties surrounding climate change projections persist due to inadequate climatological data, both in terms of quantity and quality. Nonetheless, numerous climate projections for Southern Europe indicate a worrisome trend of increasing temperatures and decreasing precipitation. The Maghreb countries, due to their geographical proximity, are expected to face significant repercussions. This challenge is further compounded by the presence of the hyper-arid Sahara, which exacerbates the impact of climate change. Consequently, the Maghreb states recognize the imminent climate evolution as a major concern. This study aims to present an overview of the current climate evolution projections in the Maghreb region and explore their potential consequences on water resources. It encompasses an analysis of the various aspects of climate change, while emphasizing the necessity of implementing adaptation strategies to mitigate the adverse impacts on water resources.

Water resource management in arid regions requires the provision of decision support tools that consider the impact of climate change as a structural reality. In the Laayoune region, located in the south of Morocco, the Foum El Oued aquifer serves as a significant fresh water reservoir in a coastal area and plays a vital role in supplying water to the city of Laayoune and neighboring municipalities. This study focuses on understanding and preserving this essential water resource, which is extensively utilized for drinking water supply, agriculture, and industrial purposes. However, due to the combination of reduced natural replenishment from the infiltration of Oued floods and increased pumping activities, groundwater has been overexploited, leading to the degradation of water quality and a considerable decline in the piezometric level. Consequently, an imbalance has emerged at the natural saltwater interface, resulting in seawater intrusion into the freshwater to compensate for the created depression. To address this issue, the objective of this work is to develop a finite difference hydrodynamic and seawater model that considers the effects of future climate change on the Foum El Oued aquifer, based on available hydrogeological data. The simulation results reveal that by 2050, under the projected conditions, the interface toe would have advanced by a distance of 6.5 km. At this time, the concentration of 10 g/l will reach a distance of 6.2 km, and the highest concentration (35 g/l) will extend to 5.8 km. This GW model serves as a crucial decision support system for water resource management, particularly for the population of Laayoune and the irrigation of the Foum El Oued agriculture area. By implementing effective management strategies, the coastal area can be protected from contamination, ensuring its sustainable use and preventing abandonment due to increasing salinity levels in irrigation and pumping wells.

Surface water resources are subject to climate change, particularly in arid zones such as Morocco's central plateau, and to the massive demand placed on water by human activities, which calls for equitable management of water potential, In this sense, hydraulic engineering is a solution for better storage and management of surface water, as well as for mitigating and adapting to climate variability. This is the aim of the Ain Kwaachia dam on the Ykem river in the northwestern part of the central plateau of Morocco. While the use of remote sensing technology, based on the acquisition of satellite images, is a kind of machine learning to quantify spatio-temporal variations in water potential, so the processing and the analysis of these image data, based on a GIS geographic information system, and this, from the Land Use index for land cover, with an unsupervised classification from 2008, the year of commissioning of the dam subject of this research, and a supervised classification around the year 2021. The results obtained show that the variations affecting the study area have been noticeable in recent years, from 9.78 km(2) for 2016, to 4.23 km(2) for 2021, as a result of the repercussions of climate change, with falling rainfall on the one hand, and in the other hand rising temperatures.

This study aimed to develop a new method for estimating the spatial distribution of vacant houses using municipal public big data and sample field surveys instead of a field survey of the whole municipal area. This can help reduce the cost, time, and labor involved in conducting vacant house surveys. For this purpose, we developed a vacant house database to integrate various public big data with field survey results for different parts of Japanese municipalities (Kagoshima and Asakura). With our newly developed method, we could estimate the spatial distribution of vacant houses with high reliability utilizing crosstab tables developed from the database. The results help to realize a method for conducting surveys of vacant house distribution in broad areas in a quick, inexpensive, and continuous manner, which has not yet been achieved by previous studies.

Significant political, military and diplomatic changes took place in the Ottoman Empire during the eighteenth century. The Treaty of Karlowitz was signed in 1699, introducing territorial losses that dramatically changed the Empire's borders. Since the determination of these borders was important for international relations, particularly with Austria, boundary mapping was one of the main subjects of Ottoman cartography during the eighteenth century. This chapter examines these maps with regard to their political context, starting with the Treaty of Karlowitz and the subsequent treaties of Passarowitz (1718), Belgrade (1739) and Svishtov (1791).

Land use and land cover change (LUCC) models are increasingly being used to anticipate the future of territories, particularly through the prospective scenario method. In the case of so-called trend or Business-as-Usual (BAU) scenarios, the aim is to observe the current dynamics and to extend them into the future. However, as they are implemented as baseline simulation in most current software packages, BAU scenarios are calibrated from a training period built from only two dates. We argue that this limits the quantitative estimation of future change intensity, and we illustrate it from a simple model of deforestation in Northern Ecuadorian Amazon using the Land Change Modeler (LCM) software package. This paper proposes a contribution to improve BAU scenarios calibration by mainly two enhancements: taking into account a longer calibration period for estimating change quantities and the integration of thematic data in change probabilities matrices. We thus demonstrate the need to exceed the linear construction of BAU scenarios as well as the need to integrate thematic and particularly socio-demographic data into the estimation of future quantities of change. The spatial aspects of our quantitative adjustments are discussed and tend to show that improvements in the quantitative aspects should not be dissociated from an improvement in the spatial allocation of changes, which may lead to a decrease in the predictive accuracy of the simulations.

A basic problem in navigation is the selection of a suitable route. This requires a determination of costs or suitability. There are approaches for many standard situations, e.g., the shortest route for pedestrians, the fastest route for cars, a physically possible and legal route for trucks, or the safest route for bicycle riders. However, not much research has been done yet for motorcycle riders. Published approaches rely on interpretation of geometry, interviews, or user feedback. None of these approaches is precise and scalable. Since modern motorcycles have an increasing number of internal sensors (e.g., lean angle sensors for curve ABS), they could provide the data required for a classification of route segments. The combination with a navigational device allows to georeferenced the data and thus attach riding characteristics to a specific road segment. This work sketches the classification concept and presents data from a real-driving experiment using an external IMU.

Search engines make information about places available to billions of users, who explore geographic information for a variety of purposes. The aggregated, large-scale search behavioural statistics provided by Google Trends can provide new knowledge about the spatial and temporal variation in interest in places. Such search data can provide useful knowledge for tourism management, especially in relation to the current crisis of tourist (over)crowding, capturing intense spatial concentrations of interest. Taking the Amsterdam metropolitan area as a case study and Google Trends as a data source, this article studies the spatial and temporal variation in interest in places at multiple scales, from 2007 to 2017. First, we analyze the global interest in the Netherlands and Amsterdam, comparing it with hotel visit data. Second, we compare interest in municipalities, and observe changes within the same municipalities. This interdisciplinary study shows how search data can trace new geographies between the interest origin (what place users search from) and the interest destination (what place users search for), with potential applications to tourism management and cognate disciplines.

In December 1884, John W Powell, second director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), addressed the U.S. Congress seeking authorization to begin systematic topographic mapping of the United States. Alaska had just become an official district of the country, extending its territory to the most westerly point of the continent. The Westward Expansion (which officially ended 1912 when Arizona was admitted to the Union) therefore came to an end, and with it the subsequent contiguous mapping of US territory became the final act of nation-building. Cartographically, this was undermined by the publication of the Atlas of the Philippine Islands by the US Coastal and Geodetic Survey in 1899. As defined by Edney (2009), there is a difference between imperial cartography (maps used to create an image of the empire as a legitimate entity and to articulate a claim for territory) and colonial cartography (maps of varying sorts used for the immediate administration within a dependency);the former preceding the latter by defining the territory claimed. This chapter focusses on the development, processes and framework of the US survey and topographic cartography of the Philippines to suggest that US colonial topographic mapping, although connecting cartography with the exercise of imperial power, was more pragmatic and considerably different to the colonial and imperial cartographies of Europe, and reflects America's struggle to define itself as a colonial power.

German Names in the Kilimanjaro Region 7th

When the colonial powers finally divided up East Africa, in 1885 the Kilimanjaro volcano massif fell to the German Empire. At the time, the assault on the summit of Kilimanjaro was regarded as an important national task and tackled as a scientific research project. For various reasons, its first climber Hans Meyer had given numerous names to landscape elements in the higher uncultivated and uninhabited summit region. These names became part of the international nomenclature. In addition to descriptive toponyms, there are mainly names of individuals with added generic terms on his maps. Subsequent explorers have continued to apply the practices introduced by Meyer for naming prominent landscape elements. The designations have been included on official topographic maps as well as on current trekking maps.
