This book discusses the impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on organizations and on society as a whole. Specifically, it examines how such technologies improve our life and work, making them more inclusive through smart enterprises. The book focuses on how actors understand Industry 4.0 as well as the potential of ICTs to support organizational and societal activities, and how they adopt and adapt these technologies to achieve their goals. Gathering papers from various areas of organizational strategy, such as new business models, competitive strategies and knowledge management, the book covers a number of topics, including how innovative technologies improve the life of the individuals, organizations, and societies; how social media can drive fundamental business changes, as their innovative nature allows for interactive communication between customers and businesses; and how developing countries can use these technologies in an innovative way. It also explores the impact of organizations on society through sustainable development and social responsibility, and how ICTs use social media networks in the process of value co-creation, addressing these issues from both private and public sector perspectives and on national and international levels, mainly in the context of technology innovations.

Omnichannel value chain: Mapping digital technologies for channel integration activities 1

In order to provide a seamless customer experience, researchers and practitioners have proposed creation of an omnichannel retailing environment by integrating online and offline channels. Channel integration necessitates use of digital technologies and there are myriads of technological solutions available. However, retailers are struggling with selection and implementation of suitable technologies to add value through channel integration. Despite the strong practical need, this issue has not been effectively addressed in the academic literature. This paper presents an omnichannel value chain underpinned by Porter's value chain model. We identify ten channel integration activities for value creation by carrying out a synthesis of current research on omnichannel retailing. Enabling digital technologies are then mapped to these activities using technology implementation examples and provide a guideline for retailers to select appropriate technologies for the identified value creation activities. © ISD 2019. This paper presents a research study, using eye tracking technology, to measure participant cognitive load when encountering micro-decision. It elaborates and improves on a pilot study that was used to test the experiment design. Prior research that led to a taxonomy of decision constructs faced in online transactional processes is discussed. We have identified, mapped and discussed existing research on Blockchain-based solutions for intellectual property (IP) protection, an investigation that emerged from a case in antibody production for scientific and medical applications. To that end, we have performed a systematic literature review and created an instrument that classifies the contributions according to the materiality of the object they protect (from immaterial to physical), the type of protection (authorship notarization or prevention of illegal use) and the type of research (conceptual or empirical). Our results can be used to understand which avenues to pursue in the effort to create a new generation of more effective technology-assisted IP protection systems, a priority for 152 signatory countries of the patent cooperation treaty. © ISD 2019. The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was conceived to protect the privacy of individual citizens and manage the movement of personal data. The Smart Grid has the same needs as any privacy-critical system and, compared to the engineering of other architectures, has the peculiarity of being the source of the energy consumption data, which is an indirect means to infer other personal information with potential professional or commercial value. This work looks at the Smart Grid from the perspective of the GDPR, which is especially relevant now given the current growth and diversification of the Smart Grid ecosystem. We contribute a review of existing works showing the importance of energy consumption as valuable personal data, an analysis of the established Smart Grid Architecture Model regarding GDPR compliance, and a list of technical and legal challenges where we can highlight the challenge of managing the data processing by third parties. © ISD 2019. The authors do a comprehensive comparison of the Swedish information systems undergraduate programs in order to on the one hand get a better understanding of how the Swedish curriculum compares to the Australian and US counter parts and on the other hand also get an understanding of where the IS field has changed over time. This change is debated to get a clearer view of what courses should be core in a post 2020 curriculum. The study points to some significant overlaps where Foundations of information systems, Data and information Management, and systems Analysis and Design are important for both Swedish, Australian, and US undergraduate IS programs. The study also shows differences in focus in the different countries curriculum, where the Swedish programs have a clear focus towards enterprise architecture and application development in comparison to both the Australian and US counterparts. © ISD 2019. In this paper we analyze and present the generic requirements identified for a software aiming at supporting crisis management training in local governments. The generic requirements are divided into overall requirements, requirements connected to the trainer’s role and requirements connected to the trainee’s role. Moreover, the requirements are mapped to problems as well as opportunities. Finally, we present examples of elaborations of the addressed requirements based on software design considerations. In our work we applied a design science approach and the artifact presented in this paper is a list of generic requirement. The presented requirements and the systems development process used, provide guidelines for systems analysts and developers in future systems development projects aiming at constructing new software for crisis management training. © Designing Digitalization, ISD 2018. Organizations today adopt agile information systems development methods (ISDM), but many do not succeed with the adoption process and in achieving desired results. systems developers sometimes fail in efficient use of ISDM, often due to a lack of understanding the fundamental intentions of the chosen method. In many cases organizations simply imitate the behavior of others without really understanding why. This conceptual paper defines this phenomenon as an ISDM cargo cult behavior and proposes an analytical framework to identify such situations. The concept of cargo cults originally comes from the field of social anthropology and has been used to explain irrational, ritualistic imitation of certain behavior. By defining and introducing the concept in the field of information systems development we provide a diagnostic tool to better understand one of the reasons why ISDM adoption sometimes fail. © Designing Digitalization, ISD 2018. In this article, we investigate how practitioners understand external platforms, whose core offering is shared and utilized by a number of heterogeneous and interconnected organizations in an ecosystem. We especially look into situations where organizations wish to extend their own capability instead of building services that extend the functionality of the platform. Such dependencies to external platforms can be envisioned as the contemporary evolution from traditional outsourcing service models. We interviewed twenty-four practitioners from eight IT organizations and discovered a considerable ambiguity in understanding of what are the external platforms utilized by the organizations. We further elaborate that the diversified meanings that various stakeholders give to the concept of external platforms, can hinder efficient communication and may have implications on important strategic decision making. © Designing Digitalization, ISD 2018.
