Modifications of material surface properties due to interactions with ambient atomic oxygen have been observed on space structures surfaces facing the orbital direction in Low Earth Orbits (LEO). Some effects are very damaging to surface optical properties because LEO atomic oxygen possesses sufficient energy to break most organic polymer bonds and sufficient flux to cause oxidative erosion of polymers. At a certain energy level, atomic oxygen triggers chemical and physical reactions with materials, leading to surface degradation. The extent of degradation depends on factors such as spacecraft altitude, orientation, orbital inclination, mission duration, and solar activity variations. Atomic oxygen can also oxidize silicones and silicone contamination, resulting in non-volatile silica deposits. Such contaminants are commonly found on LEO missions and can pose a threat to the performance of optical surfaces. This work concerns the definition of a numerical model to study the erosion depth on the typically employed spacecraft material with fixed orbit parameters and mission duration. The Finnie model was chosen, and a limited number of parameters were considered to better understand and test the dynamics of the phenomenon. The results show the erosion depth of exposed materials over a 1-year simulation to highlight its magnitude and the potential impact on mission failure.

driving assistance systems (ADAS). There exists passive systems, like ABS that boosts vehicle performance during an emergency braking, and active systems, like active cruise control that actively drives car during normal cruise. However, ADAS need to further evolve to continue the risk reduction and to increase automation level. Physiological sensing and deep learning are promising options at these regards. This paper will present a methodology to estimate the driver drowsiness from photoplethysmography (PPG) waveform, acquired by no-invasive probe embedded in the vehicle steering wheel. PPG signal is treated using the innovative hyper-filtering process, then it is elaborated by a convolutional deep architecture. A driver sample, made by 70 people distributed by gender and age, was selected to validate the approach, monitoring PPG and confirming the actual level of drowsiness by electroencephalography. The proposed network makes a classification task to distinguish a wakeful drive from a drowsy one. The developed method has an accuracy of 99%, which were higher than other networks considered for the benchmark. The evaluation of drowsiness permits to evaluate the actual attention level of the driver, augmenting the interaction between human pilot and ADAS.

In recent years, accurate 6-DOF (six degrees of freedom) pose estimation has emerged as a pivotal technology in manufacturing, enabling the precise localization and manipulation of objects in complex environments. The effectiveness of 6-DOF pose estimation algorithms critically depends on the availability of diverse, well-annotated datasets. However, obtaining and annotating such datasets present significant challenges due to their scarcity and the intensive labor required for accurate labeling. To address these issues, we propose an innovative approach that employs synthetic data generation, powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI) techniques specifically tailored for industrial applications. Our method enhances the synthetic data generation process by utilizing generative adversarial networks (GANs), which infuse the data with contextual details relevant to manufacturing environments. This process is further augmented by advanced rendering techniques and simulations that create realistic industrial scenes, complete with accurately annotated ground truth for 6-DOF poses. We validate the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed solution through its application in a real-world industrial use case, demonstrating its potential to substantially improve 6-DOF pose estimation in a manufacturing case, used for robotic picking of electronic parts.

Structural Batteries (SB) are considered a promising new technology for the next generation of hybrid electric airliners made of composite materials. The introduction of this type of embedded batteries into the aircraft industry presents new challenges involving the current manufacturing processes applied to composite aircraft components, certification issues, design methods, integration matters and accessibility considerations, up to issues related to the connection to on-board electrical systems. This work provides an assessment of the feasibility of the structural batteries at aircraft level for different categories of aircraft. It has been carried out as part of the SOLIFLY project, funded by the Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No. 101007577. This project has identified the pros and cons, technology gaps and recommendations for the integration of this type of batteries in commercial aircraft for short-, medium- (2035) and long-term (2050) applications. The current and predicted performance parameters of the SB concepts, developed intheSOLIFLYproject, have beenused in this work to analyze the effectiveness of their applicability on some existing configurations of different commercial aircraft. The results of this study show that SB concepts certainly represent an innovative technology for the aviation decarbonization and they appear very promising for weight savings.

The essence of various processes of extracting nitrogen from the air and obtaining ammonia water and liquid fertilizers is considered. The vibrating machine for obtaining ammonia water for feeding plants, as the conducted studies have shown, allows the process of saturating the liquid with air and the formation of active radicals in the treated water, which take part in chemical gas phase reactions of the formation of the NH3 compound in the cavitation cavity in the presence of a mixture of N-2(*) + H-2, as well as the formation of nitrogen oxide NO2 in the presence of N-2 + O-2. Reactions are also carried out with the participation of disturbed N-2 molecules and N-2 ions. Experimental studies show an increase in ammonia concentration in tap water by 120%, in pond water by 160%, and in pretreated water (bydistelate) by 500%. The technical result of the use of the vibration machine for obtaining ammonia water for plant feeding is a significant reduction in the number of component devices and their sizes and a significant reduction in energy costs, which during the operation of the vibration machine machines are 300W and the temperature regime is significantly reduced (the process takes place at a temperature of 20-25 degrees C), and atomic nitrogen from the air is used as a reagent and does not need an additional source of it.

This work aims to explore efficient and accurate structural design methods for orthotropic plates. The design challenges are addressed by introducing a novel Continuum Sensitivity Analysis (CSA) technique capable of managing multiple design variables and constraints. CSA has demonstrated superior accuracy and efficiency compared to traditional numerical sensitivity analysis methods, particularly in shaping high-performance air vehicles, even with numerous design variables. This study extends CSA to orthotropic plates for the first time and establishes an efficient simulation framework for high-fidelity structural shape optimization. The CSA approach facilitates the calculation of shape derivatives with respect to multiple design variables at a minimal computational time. Furthermore, this method is non-intrusive and compatible with black-box programs like NASTRAN, providing more accurate high-fidelity sensitivities than those currently available from the software.

This paper introduces a novel thermoacoustic musical instrument, bamboo flute. The system harnesses waste heat to produce sound through thermoacoustic principles, controlling the frequency by opening and closing multiple perforations and achieving the playing effect of a traditional Chinese bamboo flute. Initially, a model of the thermoacoustic flute is developed. Subsequently, an analysis is conducted to assess the impact of the position and number of perforations on thermoacoustic system. The results reveal that the perforation closest to the thermoacoustic core determines the frequency and the distribution of acoustic power. Through manipulation of the perforation boundaries, the system achieves frequency modulation within the range of 277-523 Hz, fulfilling the essential criteria for a G key bamboo flute.

The variation in the machining performance of different types of nanoparticles and cutting fluids on various materials requires investigation. In this study, machining performance was evaluated in terms of resultant force, cutting temperature, surface roughness, and material removal rate using three different cutting speeds and three different feed values under vegetable cutting oil minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) and nano MoS2-added vegetable cutting oil MQL (N-MQL) in turning AISI 1040 steel. Afterward, the appropriate process parameters were sorted and selected, and the combined compromise solution (CoCoSo) method was applied. Resultant force, cutting temperature, and surface roughness are all improved by 54.2%, 28.2%, and 72.1%, respectively, when employing N-MQL rather than MQL cutting environments. When the resultant force, cutting temperature, surface roughness, and material removal rate are weighted equally, the most suitable cutting parameters are determined as 160 m/min cutting speed and 0.08 mm/rev feed value, and the best cutting environment is N-MQL.

Origami, a traditional Japanese art, has influenced engineering and shape memory materials design, enabling complex structures from simple folds. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) using polylactic acid (PLA) presents new landscapes for shape-changing structures. PLA, with its relatively low glass transition temperature (i.e. 55-65 degrees C), exhibits an activable shape changing behavior within easily accessible temperature ranges and, even not at the human body temperature, can be a valuable and available material to demonstrate the intent mechanism. In this paper we investigate how PLA's shape memory properties together with tool path extrusion strategies can be harnessed within the framework of origamiinspired structures. The waterbomb origami structure has been implemented to analyze folding and shape memory mechanism. The influence of 3 different activation temperatures of the mechanism as well as 3 different printing toolpaths were evaluated on a single cell. Five elements were arranged on a cylindrical shape to ideally achieve a portion of a tracheal stent with a small diameter during the insertion phase, which increases when in place. The results obtained demonstrate the potential of combining techniques used in origami and shape memory materials for reducing the initial volume of a part, which can be useful in many applications, such as stents in the biomedical field. By identifying a suitable material, the stent can be reduced in size, minimizing the invasiveness of the surgical procedure. Once inserted into the duct, the stent can unfold and adhere to the duct walls effectively.

Investigation of various technological processes for the implementation of transport movement using vibratory conveyor machines for heat exchange processing of bulk materials was carried out, which showed the effectiveness of drive mechanisms with a combined unbalanced vibration system. Graphoanalytical analysis of power and moment disturbances during the generation of working vibrations made it possible to predict and ensure the necessary trajectory of bulk material movement without an additional transport device. With the help of the developed research vibrating dryer with a flexible transport body, the kinematic and energy characteristics of the exciter were experimentally obtained, which confirmed the results of mathematical modeling and substantiated the main parameters of the operating mode for advancing the technological load along the processing zone. Comparative studies of the characteristics of the movement of loose masses of rapeseed and soybeans, conducted on a research model and a classic belt conveyor, showed an increase in the speed of raw material transportation by almost two times and a decrease in energy consumption for the process using the vibration wave scheme by 1.6 times.
