The combined mass of wheelset and rail exhibits a simple harmonic motion on the resilient fastener. The natural resonance mode of this motion is called P2 resonance. P2 resonance typically happens at a frequency around 30-100 Hz proportional to the square root of the stiffness of the resilient fastener. Railway Groundborne noise (GBN) at the buildings near railway tunnels is associated with the vibration at the P2 resonance frequency of the rail. Tuned Mass Dampers (TMD) tuned to the P2 resonance frequency can significantly dissipate the ground-borne vibration energy. A TMD includes the mass-spring-damper system that counteracts the rail vibration and dissipates the energy at a resilient layer via amplified hysteresis motion of the oscillators. The theory and FEA simulation demonstrate the effect of the TMD on groundborne vibration reduction in this study. The results of the vibration reductions from FEA are compared with the laboratory test results.

Serial-parallel production systems are often used in industrial practice, especially when high process reliability must be guaranteed. The article proposes a simulation model of a serial-parallel production system that was created based on Tecnomatix Plant Simulation software. For the developed model, throughput tests were carried out for various allocations of inter-operation buffer capacity and production flow control strategies. Based on the research results, a methodology for rapid prototyping of serially parallel production systems with specific throughput was proposed. The results of the conducted research can be helpful in quickly determining the assumptions for the construction of serial-parallel production systems in order to achieve specific throughput.

Tidal turbines are a type of renewable energy technology designed to harness the kinetic energy of tides and convert it into electricity. Several tidal energy projects and prototypes are being developed worldwide, and the ongoing research aims to improve efficiency and reduce costs. In our work, we developed a new prototyped tidal turbine, and our intention is to validate its performance using finite element simulations. The prototype is based on the Darrius concept and an NACA0018 blade profile. The Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes equations model coupled with the k-epsilon turbulence model is used. By varying the fluid velocity from 1 to 2.5 m/s, numerical results show that tidal torque ranges from 1.6 to 10.2 N.m, rotational speed ranges from 6.8 to 17 rad/s, and tidal power ranges from 11 to 173.3 W. The kinetic power coefficient of the designed tidal turbine is found to be equal to 0.113.

This paper presents an optimization case study developed for a leather company, which aims to improve operational performance at the technical team level in routing and apply improvements that impact it. This project aims to create a route optimization model for what were initially intuitive routes. Since the assignment of work hours by the central team varies, there is a fluctuation in the material shipped to each customer. Considering that this fluctuation is relatively small and only happens every quarter, the fixed route system can be considered as functional, needing updating when there is a new time allocation. Thus, the objective is to minimize the total transportation cost, which in this case is provided by the cost per kilometer. To this end, five scenarios, obtained by a decision support tool, were studied. The VRPTW model, together with decisions concerning the routes, namely cross-docking in Orleans, allowed the reduction of costs by more than 30%, maintaining the customer's and company's requirements regarding the service level. These gains refer to one of the scenarios studied, in which it was possible to guarantee all last-mile distribution with three vans, within expected time windows and demands. Although the scenario with the greatest margin for gains is the one that presents a distribution center according to the gravity method, it also requires renting a warehouse in the Perrusson area (area indicated by the gravity method).

While solving harmonic exterior acoustics problems using the traditional finite element method, we truncate the domain at some finite radius on which appropriate absorbing boundary conditions, like spherical damping condition, approximate the Sommerfeld radiation condition. In exterior domain acoustic wave propagation, there are no incoming waves as the propagating wave does not meet any surface to be reflected. Jog [8] used this physical fact in formulating the Outward wave favouring (OWF) strategy in [8]. He assumed the acoustic pressure in a unique form favourable to simulate the 'Outgoing' nature of the acoustic wave in the exterior domain. In that unique form, the highly oscillatory part of the acoustic wave, which is common to all exterior harmonic acoustics problems, is separated. As we separate the highly oscillatory part apriori, the frequency term is contained in that separated known oscillatory term. Therefore, the finite element method (FEM) has to capture the relatively gentle unknown part, which is problem-specific. Hence, this strategy is highly effective for high-frequency exterior domain problems. In this work, we have demonstrated the coarse mesh accuracy of the OWF formulations with various examples running at higher frequencies. We have compared OWF formulations with their conventional counterpart in terms ofupper L2 L2 error norm over a range of frequencies. Also, we have done a detailed mesh analysis for various benchmark problems over different frequencies. Also, for achieving some expected level of accuracy compared to the analytical benchmark solutions, the required time has been compared between conventional and OWF elements.

Numerical methods to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) have become indispensable in the field of fluid mechanics. Despite the intensive development of numerical methods such as the finite volume method and the finite element method over the past decades, these methods still have certain limitations, especially when dealing with numerical modeling of complex three-dimensional fluid flows. Moreover, a new simulation is needed for each modification of the domain, boundary conditions and material properties, which make the use of these methods inefficient for parameter studies in the design process or optimization. A new approach to solve PDEs has been recently introduced in the field of scientific machine learning. Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) utilize the residuals of one or more PDEs as the loss function of an artificial neural network (ANN), while the boundary conditions are imposed in a supervised manner. Instead of solving a system of equations, with the PINN approach a nonconvex optimization is performed to approximate the specific solution of the PDEs by an ANN. Although this relatively new method cannot yet compete with classical numerical methods in terms of accuracy especially for complex geometries, this approach shows promising potentials, as it is mesh-free and suitable for parametric solution of PDE problems. As an exemplary application, we examine a three-dimensional pipe flow problem featuring a variable inlet boundary condition and a twisted baffle that mimics a static mixer. The flow fields predicted by the PINNmodel are compared and validated with CFD simulations.

New digital technologies are integrated to improve production. The Lean manufacturing paradigm is the foremost approach to creating efficient processes in the industry. In small-lot production, improvements include optimizing the process and decision-making for controlling the quality of the final product, reducing production time, and saving energy. This research overviews existing combinations of Lean manufacturing and Industry 4.0 technologies by literature review and discusses the potential of the digital twins in lean manufacturing. The objective of this paper is to investigate the potential of digital twins, as a state-of-the-art technology in industry 4,0, in small-lot production in the metal-cutting industry. As a result, a digital twins framework with five layers is proposed to use in the product design and manufacturing phase of a product lifecycle with a lean waste paradigm. The tasks of these layers are to transfer data from the physical space to the virtual space, extract information and knowledge, analyses them to select the appropriate manufacturing parameters, evaluate the results, and predict the status of the production. The framework enables the users to optimize the process planning and make decisions based on the updated data from the physical shop floor.

The paper concerns the problems of dry milling of the AISI 316L stainless steel. In the first part the challenges of dry milling process and problems of coated tool technology were discussed. The second part consists of dry machining experiment with application of carbide milling cutter coated with AlCrN-based coating. The goal of presented primary experiment was to analyze performance of coated carbide mill and the relationships between feed and cutting forces, surface roughness and tool life were determined. The study confirms that use of coated carbide tools in dry milling significantly improves both tool life and surface quality. The coated carbide tools, especially those with a carbide grain size of 0.41 mu m, were found to be effective technological solution for achieving high surface quality in dry machining of AISI 316L steel.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent medical problem. The inhale and exhale breathing airflow parameters in obstructive sleep apnea patients are studied. The upper airway airflow is simulated using a steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) with an SST turbulence model. The 3D airway model is developed using Materialize Interactive Medical Image Control System (MIMICS) and ANSYS software. The simulation findings showed that the cross-sectional area of the airway affects velocity, Reynolds Number, and Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE). The TKE measures turbulence flow under both breathing circumstances for various patients. These findings may help develop a method that uses TKE to assess the severity of OSA. This work should help doctors researching OSA better grasp the impact of a cross-sectional area on airflow characteristics in the patient's upper airway.

Two simulation programs SDTrimSP and RDS-BASIC were used to study the variation of sputtering energy threshold values (E-th) of beryllium metal irradiated by Helium, Tritium, and Deuterium ions when bombarded at various angles of incidence. The study aims to mimic the actual condition that the beryllium first wall of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is subjected to in regular operation conditions. In all of the studied irradiation systems, we found that increasing the angle of incidence causes E-th values to decrease gradually until they reach their minimum values at an angle range between 40 degrees and 70 degrees. The E-th minimum values were found to be (10% to 35%) lower than their normal incidence value E-th(0 degrees). These results were discussed theoretically and compared with one suggested theoretical model.
