Designing customized orthodontic treatments presents a significant challenge due to the diverse and heterogeneous requirements that must be met to correct misaligned teeth and malocclusions. These requirements include specific directives from orthodontists, individual patient considerations, physiological constraints, and technological limitations. The current approach mainly involves collaboration between technicians and orthodontists utilizing specialized CAD software and implementing manual methodologies. This paper outlines the formalization of an algorithm developed to facilitate the design of these medical treatments. A mathematical model based on existing knowledge is proposed to automate the generation of a patient's final dental configuration, which serves as the foundation for producing all necessary devices for the treatment plan. The mathematical model has been validated through collaboration with orthodontists and a manufacturer specialized in orthodontic devices. Feedback obtained from these collaborations demonstrates the effectiveness of the developed solution and its utility as a valuable resource during discussions with orthodontic professionals.

In the context of designing of customized products, ensuring the verification of requirements and stakeholder needs in an efficient and cost-effective manner poses significant challenges. This paper proposes a Virtual Prototyping approach, integrating Computer-Aided Design and multibody modelling, to leverage their respective advantages. The presented case study involves the integration of two pre-existing robots, a cobot and an Autonomous Mobile Robot, to realize an Autonomous Mobile Cobot tailored to the specific needs of a manufacturing industry. Through Virtual Prototyping approach, part of the requirements, including spatial and assembly constraint, are verified by means of CAD, while interaction and behavioural requirements are verified through multibody modelling and simulation. This work highlights the efficacy of Virtual Prototyping in achieving comprehensive design verification for tailored products. By simulating the behaviour and performance of the designed system before physical implementation, Virtual Prototyping reduces the time and costs associated with traditional trial-and-error methods. Moreover, it enables a more thorough exploration of design alternatives and optimization strategies, ultimately improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the design process. This integrated approach showcases the potential of digital tools to enhance the development of complex industrial systems, paving the way for tailored solutions to meet evolving market demands.

In forage harvesters, drum devices equipped with fixed blades are used to shred mowed plant mass. The length of the shredded particles is determined by the number of blades and the diameter of the drum. While flat blades are easy to manufacture, they can cause uneven loading when installed parallel to the drum axis. Angled or helical blades are more complex to manufacture but offer solutions to this issue. Using a sectional drum to arrange blades can help minimize impact loads. Additionally, helical knives, which are outlined along a helical line, offer a solution by providing a constant cutting angle and even loading. However, they are more complex to manufacture. This research focuses on designing a helical knife to optimize the shredding process based on specific geometric parameters. Parametric equations for the knife surface are formulated, and an approximate unfolding is constructed due to the non-developable nature of the surface. Calculations are based on given geometric parameters to optimize the shredding process. For the given parameters tau = 20 degrees, phi = 65 degrees, R = 0.25 m, L = 0.72 m, and uo = 0.1 m, the flat blank of the knife will be a part of a ring, which is determined by the central angle psi = 0.08 rad and bounded by the arcs of circles Ro = 9.55 m and ro = 9.45 m.

The environmental and economic sustainability of Additive Manufacturing (AM) is an aspect that deserves attention. Proper design frameworks must guide design engineers in conceiving sustainable AM products during the conceptual design phase. Previous scientific studies are not grounded on the lifecycle engineering (LCE) approach since they consider only specific product lifecycle phases (e.g., manufacturing or end-of-life) or are based on the general design for AM guidelines, not considering sustainability drivers (cost and environment). This paper presents an innovative ecodesign for AM framework called eDAM. First, it allows designers to evaluate if and when AM is sustainable from a LCE perspective. Secondly, it enables design engineers to maximize product lifecycle performance by optimizing the adoption of the unique benefits of AM. The eDAM framework was used to re-design a passenger aircraft's interior panels and spacers. Using a bio-inspired shape, designers achieved a 15% weight reduction on the part and 0.2% on the overall aircraft.

This paper explores the influence of Voronoi tessellation parameters on the dynamic behavior of a mechanical tensioner's leaf spring used in internal combustion engines. By integrating Voronoi tessellation with Additive Manufacturing, the research investigates how varying the number of seeds affects the modal frequencies of the leaf spring. The study employs a design algorithm to maintain constant mass while adjusting the number of seeds and scaling factor, using a finite element (FE) formulation to predict and manage the leaf spring's dynamic nonlinear characteristics based on mass distribution. Modal simulations extract the natural frequencies, modal shapes, and participation factors of the component, analyzing how changes in these factors impact performance. The research findings underscore the significance of Voronoi parameters in modifying natural frequencies and dynamic behavior, highlighting their potential for topology optimization in frequency-sensitive applications. Validation comes through experimental testing, confirming the simulation results and emphasizing the role of appropriate mass distribution in controlling system frequencies. This study opens avenues for further exploration in topology optimization, focusing on dynamic systems management through Voronoi tessellation.

In recent years, the integration of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques and capabilities has emerged as one of most promising research fields to aid the industrial development of smart and zero-defect manufacturing solutions. This study explores the potential of generative AI in this field and reviews novel opportunities enabled by generative AI methods, and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) in particular, to aid the generation of augmented datasets including realistic representations of anomalous process patterns. The result is an effective AI framework to learn specific defect features from real data, and reproduce them in an extended way, leading to synthetic but realistic image data that could be used to enhance defect detection and classification performances. The paper reviews the benefits and open challenges associated with the implementation of these techniques, including state-of-the-art examples and real case studies in Additive Manufacturing.

The processes of formation and destruction of oxide films are often used as a basis for building models of the wear process. The work investigates the mechanism of wear, which consists of the formation and destruction of Fe2O3 films (moderate temperatures) or Fe3O4 films (elevated temperatures). The surface layers of the materials were studied by EOS and SEM methods on an Auger spectral microprobe JEOL JAMP - 10S under the following conditions: primary electron energy 5 keV, modulation amplitude 2-4 V, angle between the primary beam and the surface plane 90 degrees, Auger electron registration angle 45 degrees. The research results proved that in terms of mechanical properties and strength of adhesion to the base, oxidation films formed directly by friction (secondary structures) differ significantly from films formed thermally. A comparative analysis of the obtained data of the structures of the surface layer allows us to state that the contact of metallic materials with an oxidizing medium has a discrete nature of contact, as a result of which local stresses significantly exceed mechanical ones. It has been proven that the wear process in the oxidation mode does not lead to the formation of a fragmented surface layer of significant thickness, and the formation of a corresponding relief in a limited area indicates that the friction process at an arbitrary moment in time is accompanied by a deformation that does not cover the entire friction surface.

In the automotive industry, assembly line equipment represents one of the major costs to be considered during product-process development due to the complexity of assembly operations and their need of purchasing cutting-edge solutions capable of carrying them out. DMU (Digital Mock-Up) software may support components design and assembly lines development allowing simulations of the operations. Currently, real-time virtual prototyping and simulation involve exclusively components that could be modeled as rigid or 1D-deformable. For other components, especially non-metallic ones, mock-ups are realized exclusively through physical models. To increase DMU software benefits, it is necessary an increase of fidelity concerning the modeling of a larger set of materials (e.g. hyperelastic models) and 2D geometric large deformations, present in thin-wall and shell components. This capability becomes crucial in DMU of real-practice cases, allowing to simulate assembly paths through gaps that are inaccessible without deforming the component to be inserted. Elastic deformation during assemblies represents a high computational effort for 2D components that is not affordable yet in real time conditions. Defeaturing is a possible strategy to simplify components, lightening computational effort. Hence, a compromise between response speed and accuracy in the respect to real behavior is necessary. This paper reports feasibility analyses and developed procedures based on this set of simulations, helpful for the current development of a 2D-elastic module of a VR/AR software, *** (ESI). To do this a plastic wheel arch has been used as development case study. FE simulations and results are reported, using Hyperworks and *** environments, with comparisons.

This paper presents an innovative approach designed to simplify the decision-making process in the installation of Projector-based Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR) systems through the utilization of the Design for Mass Personalization methodology. The developed solution addresses the inherent complexities of defining platform hardware components, streamlining setup procedures, and minimizing the necessity for extensive technical expertise and time investment. Implemented as a Blender add-on, this solution provides users with a 3D model of the platform setup alongside a comprehensive list of components accompanied by technical specifications. Validation results demonstrate the configurator's capability to generate valid configurations when compared to existing setups. Additionally, studies involving experts in AR/VR technologies confirm its satisfactory usability. These promising findings suggest the potential for significant advancements in AR system configuration through this approach.

This study explores the design of an intelligent bearing and its capacity for self-powered operation. Leveraging the dual functionalities of piezoelectric transducers for both monitoring the health of the bearing and harnessing energy from bearing internal strain, this study focuses on utilizing the dynamic strain energy from the bearing and evaluating the potential for energy generation. The ball bearing is nested in a piezoelectric transducer ring with different electrode sections to form a smart structure. The underlying hypothesis posits that, as the bearing ball passes through the designated cut section of the piezoelectric transducer, it can harness the dynamic strain energy from the rotation of the bearing and utilize the energy to charge a capacitor. Three configurations of piezoelectric transducers with different cutting section areas have been tested in the experimental studies under different conditions of rotating speed and transverse load. Remarkably, the outcomes manifest as a peak DC output of 0.8 V, coupled with a root mean square (RMS) power of 43.979 mu W within a 128-s operation. Beyond the implication for self-powering in the present study, this intelligent structure signifies the potential to achieve concurrent self-powering and condition monitoring by employing distinct cutting sections of the piezoelectric ring and machine learning algorithm.
