A numerical study has been performed to investigate impingement flow and heat transfer characteristics issued from a square pipe nozzle with a square air-augmented duct. Investigations were done for various nozzle-to-plate spacing, air duct lengths and diameters. The problem under investigation has been modelled three-dimensionally and under steady-state conditions. Investigations were done for a Re number value of 20000, H/d = 4-8, L/d = 1.5-4 and D/d = 1.5-6. The flow was modelled as incompressible and turbulent. A validation study has been performed by using experimental data from the literature and a fair agreement has been obtained. It was observed that, the variation in dimensionless duct diameter (D/d) has a low effect on heat transfer. The heat transfer increases with the decrease in dimensionless duct length (L/d) for H/d = 6, whereas for H/d = 8 it was seen that L/d has low effect on heat transfer. In addition, it was observed that the highest average Nu (Nu(avg)) could be obtained for L/d = 1.5. A correlation was proposed for Nu(avg).

In the age of machine learning, data-driven approaches with hybrid data (a mixture of real images and simulation images) are getting increasingly popular. One major issue with creating a realistic simulation for surface engineering is that the surface of the mesh model used in the simulation is smooth. Often, this mesh does not contain information on surface texture;thus, simulating an object based on these meshes may not represent an actual surface texture of a real component. This article presents a novel technique for introducing surface roughness onto a smooth mesh object to facilitate engineering simulation by using a conditional Generative-Adversarial Network (cGAN) that is trained on real height maps to generate random 2D height maps that represents a realistic texture of a typical upskin and downskin surface of an additively manufactured (AM) part. This approach extracted the past scans of AM components from the Focus Variation microscopy. The 3D surface deviation is extracted as height maps and used as the training data for the generative network. This paper will also discuss the structural similarities between the synthetic and real data using standard descriptors for surface texture characterisation, such as S-a, S-q and S-dq.

Wear is becoming a topic of major attention for tyres, affecting also other performances. Therefore, its estimation is of utter importance under several points of view, such as predictive maintenance and vehicle dynamics controllers. Indoor testing is emerging as an alternative way for predicting wear compared to on-road outdoor tests, which nowadays represent the standard methodology. Indoor tests, in fact, are performed in a more controllable environment, reducing testing time and costs. However, several challenges must be faced to reproduce indoor the same wear rate/shape obtained in real on-road working conditions. The present paper focuses one of the critical aspects for indoor testing: the definition of the load cycle to be applied to a tyre, i.e. the time history of forces, slip and angles to be provided as an input to the wear machine. Specifically, a clustering approach able to extract from outdoor data a limited set of manoeuvres representative of a given outdoor wear track is proposed.

Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is the most widely used method of manufacturing electronic assemblies to place electronic components on the surface of the printed circuit board (PCB). The miniaturization trend in electronics requires tighter placement control to satisfy this SMT connection criterion. With the ongoing miniaturization trend and increased usage of lead-free solder, the solder's misalignment has caused component misalignment, especially on the mini-scale components. This research proposes a statistical-based framework that collects data from inspection machines and identifies the optimal placement position to minimize the small passive component's side overhang (SO), which is one of the dimensional requirements in SMT assemblies. An experiment that involves four printer settings and 4,800 resistors R0402M (0.40 mm x 0.20 mm) is designed and conducted. In the experiment, our framework shows the effectiveness of reducing SO.

Thermal spray composite coatings have been widely used in a diversity of industrial applications, particularly, the high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spraying nickel alloy coatings have been used to enhance the wear resistance of various engineering components especially for the machining tools. In the present work, NiCrFeSiAlBC coating was deposited on C45 substrate with the HVOF thermal spray process and the microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of the deposit was investigated. The microstructure of the HVOF-sprayed NiCrFeSiAlBC coating was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The micro hardness was determined in the substrate and in the coating by using Vicker's micro-indenter, also, tribological tests were conducted via a reciprocating ball on flat tribometer at 10 N normal load, the ball being from Si3N4 material. All the results were discussed in relation to the hardness and wear resistance. It was found that the NiCrFeSiAlBC coating exhibited a very good tribological performance when compared to the uncoated substrate (C45).

The ceramic sanitary ware industry is widespread all over the world, employing thousands of people and, consequently, having a high financial impact on the global and national economy. Although the objective is always to achieve maximum efficiency in these products' manufacturing process, some defects arise, preventing a small percentage of them from being sold. To promote a sustainable economy of resources for the company, in this work a new recovery method is proposed, to avoid products without the required quality level to be submitted to a new complete production cycle, thus promoting their repair in a simpler and more effective way. With the implementation of laser technology for the recuperation of sanitary ware, replacing the refiring process in the kiln, it is estimated that 9(sic) will be saved per product, on 5% of an annual production rate of 200,000 sanitary ware parts of all sizes and shapes, consisting of a 90,000(sic) save per year.

Local scour by a submerged jet is a typical phenomenon of water-soil interaction, present in many engineering situations such as gates, sewers, spillways, pipes, dredging of channels and ports. Its complexity causes that the problem is still scientifically open and numerical simulation is an effective tool to help to understand the different physical processes involved. The present work focuses on the development of physical and numerical modeling of the sediment scour under impinging vertical submerged jet, in order to maximize the main strengths of both complementary approaches. The base CFD used, ***, is an open-source finite volume code in block structured curvilinear meshes for an incompressible viscous fluid. Fluid-particle systems are modeled as pseudo-continuous materials of a single phase and the presence of particles is taken into account in terms of an effective viscosity. A set of numerical simulations were performed to represent local scour hole by changing the main hydro-sediment parameters. Eighteen physical experiments were carried out in the laboratory of IMFIA in order to validate the numerical model. The simulation results show that the development of the scour hole and the different flow patterns are in good agreement with the present experiments and also previously published results. Some of the differences found can be partially explained by the characteristics of the sediment;particularly sediment granulometry and internal friction angle of the material are aspects that must be studied further.

Breakwaters are constructed for the purpose of forming an artificial harbour with a water area so protected from the ocean waves. Breakwater provides protection against waves but some of them serve a dual purpose by providing berthing facilities alongside for a ship. The alignment of the breakwater must be considered after examining the predominant direction of approach of waves and winds, degree of protection required, magnitude and direction of littoral drift, and the possible effect of these breakwaters on the shorelines. If natural rock is abundantly available and can be quarried to the required sizes economically, the rubble mound breakwaters offer the best solution. Three main reasons for the failure of breakwater are (a) reasons inherent to the structure itself, (b) reasons inherent to the prevailing hydraulic and loads conditions, and (c) reasons inherent to the foundation and seabed morphology. In this paper, the stability of breakwaters of fishery harbour in Andhra Pradesh are studied through PLAXIS 2D. The proposed harbour in Uppada consists of two breakwaters to be constructed at an angle to the shore line up to -5.0 m and -6.0 m contours forming an enclosing area and in Machilipatnam breakwaters are normal to the shore line up to -4.0 m depth contour. Stability analysis is carried out on five sections of each locations of fishery harbour. The factor of safety required for the stability is 1.3. The design of breakwaters is made safe by replacing the soft clay with rock filling for the depth of 1-2 m in order to ensure the stability of the breakwater.

This paper aims to bridge the gap between research into lean production, Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) and Human Centered Manufacturing (HCM) to show a path towards what the European Union has defined as "Industry 5.0". The worker inclusive, sustainable, and digital future of industry. Inspired by the concept of "Jidoka", first developed by Sakichi Toyoda in the early 1920s as he worked to make loom operators work less strenuous, and the recent advances in Human Centered Manufacturing we present a research path towards a concept of Smart Collaboration, a novel approach to zero-defect and zero-waste manufacturing that aims to leverage the skills and ingenuity of people with Artificial Intelligence. To develop the concept we have carried out a Rapid Literature Review of human/machine collaboration in both the extant lean literature, as well as in Zero Defect Manufacturing and in Human Centered Manufacturing. Then we looked for thematic trends in the papers reviewed on approaching human/machine collaboration, and finally we draw from the findings a path towards a new concept of Smart Collaboration for zero-waste and zero-defect manufacturing. The results from the review show how human-machine collaboration is addressed from a multitude of subjects, such as materials and wearables, robotics and enabling technology. However, our results also show that researchers are yet to consider the human rationality in human-machine collaboration, and we suggest that further work should be done to address this.

In addressing the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions given the environmental consequences of conventional electricity production and lack of economically viable technology to store excess energy from wind and solar, our research summarizes various technologies for hydrogen production and storage. As part of our experimental work, an alkaline membraneless electrolyzer was built. Membraneless electrolysis shows great potential in enabling relatively cost-effective hydrogen production comparedwith traditional electrolysis methods thus lowering the cost of green hydrogen for energy storage, offering a step towards a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.
