In the context of increasing resource scarcity, the Circular Economy has gained traction among researchers and managers as a potential solution to achieve a more sustainable system through efficient use of resources. Despite the importance of implementing circular practises in supply chains, the operational impact of circularity remains largely unexplored. Therefore, motivated by the existing interest in this topic, the aim of this work is to contribute to the current research gap and explore the impact of circularity on the dynamics of supply chains. Specifically, this study examines the performance of supply chains that incorporate remanufacturing through industrial symbiosis, i.e. which refers to the exchange of waste or by-products between different processes or firms, known as symbiotic supply chains. Using a modelling and simulation approach, this study evaluates the impact of operational factors on supply chain dynamics and identifies the most influential. Furthermore, this study offers practical guidance for managers seeking to integrate industrial symbiosis into their supply chains. Among our findings, we observe that, depending on the specific objectives of the supply chain, some circular strategies can have more impact on the dynamic performance of the supply chains than others.

In several industries, increased vibrations often occur at pumps, compressors or turbines and at the connected piping systems. These vibrations can have different causes. Different measures can be used to decrease this vibration level. In many cases, additional supports are used to tighten the piping. But in some cases, it is not possible or very expensive and inconvenient to install additional piping supports or damping devices. Another very effective measure is the use of vibration absorbers [Lenz J (2008) Three-dimensional vibration absorber to eliminate high vibrations in pipelines. In: Gas machinery conference. Albuquerque, New Mexico]. Especially vibration absorbers with an implemented damping characteristic enable a significant optimization of the vibration characteristic in a broad frequency range. In this paper, the vibration absorber Magic Tube is presented. The vibration absorber is adjustable on site in a wide frequency range with different mass configurations. The design is introduced, and a case study shows the vibration reduction effect in the field.

Bio-inspired textures have recently gained much attention due to their unique properties. Understanding the correlation between bio-inspired textures and friction behavior is critical in optimizing friction response. The study investigates the frictional behavior of surfaces inspired by snake skin, when subjected to sliding. A Finite Element (FE) model was implemented using Abaqus/standard software, taking the effect of the bio-inspired texture into consideration. During the test, the rigid ball, with a diameter 10 mm, was alternatively sliding on the texture surface. A normal load of 1 N was applied on the ball. Numerical results obtained were consistent with the experimental results. They have shown the significant effect of the sliding direction on the friction behavior. The results depict the anisotropic behavior of thesnake skin-inspired surface. Indeed, friction coefficient recorded when sliding in the positive direction (mu+) was larger than in the negative (mu-) one. The ratio of frictional anisotropy (i.e., mu+/mu-) is constant (1.77).

Sudden and unexpected economic changes associated with market competition and short product life cycles have generated significant organizational challenges. Thus improvements in processes and product characteristics can directly interfere with their production capacity. To identify improvements in the process, it is fundamental to analyze how the process is developing and, based on that, make favourable decisions. Today, several companies analyze their data, but most of these are done by manually collected data, which brings much uncertainty and can delay the analysis and decision-making process. The present work aims to propose a digital architecture to calculate the OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) for machines in the manufacturing industry. The relationship between the behaviour parameters of the machines allows for diagnosing critical factors for the production system, namely performance, availability, and quality. The machine parameters presented in a short period allow faster action by operators in cases of failures in the activity, and greater security in the planning of the production process, as well as in the development of products and maintenance schedules, directly impacting the production cost. The project's innovation is carried out through digital data modelling based on the ETL context with parameters derived from the behaviour of a machine, where they are dynamically processed and correlated in the Desktop software to illustrate the calculated OEE value.

In the laser cutting process, cutting parameters play a crucial role in determining the quality of the cut surface. In this study, a fiber laser machine was used to cut mild steel S355 with a thickness of 12 mm. The response surface method (RSM) and genetic algorithm (GA) were employed to optimize the cutting parameters assuming the surface roughness as the response of the process. The main parameters investigated are cutting speed, laser power, gas pressure, focus position, nozzle diameter, and stand-off. Due to the importance of the surface roughness of structural steel elements cut by means of thermal processes in agreement with the standard EN ISO 9013 the correlation between the input parameters and the surface roughness was investigated. In detail, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the model and investigate significant parameters and their interactions on the surface roughness. The nonlinearity of the problem and the complex influence of the parameters and their interaction on the roughness was studied considering all six cutting parameters which were not studied well by others before. Eventually, after optimization process and finding the optimal parameters, the validation of the study was carried out on additional specimens cut using predicted-optimized laser cutting parameters. The good agreement between experimental and predicted surface roughness highlights the capability of the approach to drive the choice of the laser cutting parameters.

Facing increased environmental concerns and a shift away from plastic, the paperboard industry is adapting to balance sustainability with efficiency. Driven by strict regulations and a market push for eco-friendly packaging, there's a need to reassess traditional practices. This systematic literature reviews insights into the adoption of lean methodologies within the paper and paperboard segment of the packaging industry. The research, through database searches and analytical methods, delves into Lean's integration with automation and its impact on efficiency and sustainability and consolidates a multitude of case studies and scholarly work to assess the on-ground application of the latest lean tools. Although operational advancements are recognized with foundational theories by pioneers like Florida et al. that align lean practices with environmental sustainability, and the applicability of lean tools such as Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Kaizen in streamlining paperboard manufacturing, the review also illuminates challenges, such as the resistance in workforce adaptation, the complexity of integrating new processes, and inconsistencies in outcomes across established production chains.

A rapidly developing technology, digital twins have the potential to completely change how products are designed and developed. Digital twins enable the simulation of the performance of various design concepts, the identification of potential issues with a design, and the optimization of the design for certain performance needs. However, in terms of digital twins and their utilization in product development, there are some gaps in the existing literature. There is also a lack of a standardized digital twin framework. There is currently no structure for creating and utilizing digital twins that is universally approved. Because of this, it is challenging for many organizations to share and work together on digital twin initiatives. Another aspect to consider is the huge investment of putting digital twin technology into practice. Implementing digital twin technology can be costly, particularly for large and complicated products. This may prevent small and medium-sized firms from adopting the technology. Real-time data integration is also lacking. For digital twins to be accurate, the physical product must provide real-time data. Getting real-time data from sensors and other devices might, however, be challenging to include into the digital twin. This paper examines the bibliographic research gaps concerning the use of digital twins specifically for new product design and development. The report also addresses some solutions and how the limitations might affect the development of digital twin technologies in the future.

Assembly lines are at the core of many manufacturing systems, and planning for a well-balanced flow is key to ensure long-term efficiency. However, in flexible configurations such as Multi-Manned Assembly Lines (MMAL), the balancing problem also becomes more challenging. Due to the increased relevance of these assembly lines, this work aims to investigate the MMAL balancing problem, to contribute for a more effective decision-making process. Therefore, a new approach is proposed based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) embedded in a Digital Twin architecture. The proposed approach provides a close-to-reality training environment for the agent, using Discrete Event Simulation to simulate the production system dynamics. This methodology was tested on a real-world instance with preliminary results showing that similar solutions to the ones obtained using optimization-based strategies are achieved. This research provides evidence of success in terms of dynamic resource assignment to tasks and workers as a basis for future developments.

The integrity of the reactor pressure vessel is of the utmost importance in nuclear reactor safety. One of the cases that need to be studied more thoroughly is the formation of a corium pool which could happen during severe accident scenarios. The melted core is a mixture of multiple melted materials, giving the fluid a unique flow structure. Additionally, the presence of high-temperature variations within the corium pool causes an extremely high Rayleigh number for a natural convection flow regime. This unique problem requires significant research efforts;hence, an effort has been put forward to study it numerically. This paper studies a quarter-circular vessel with internal heat generation representing a high-temperature melted core and corresponds to the famous BALI experiments. In this context, a wide range of RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) based CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations are performed to better understand the complex thermal-hydraulics phenomena in a corium pool. Additionally, a comparative study is performed to assess the prediction capabilities of different RANS models.

Due to the importance of safety in the development of Automated Driving Systems (ADS), research is ongoing on fallback functions for ADS. Scenarios involving steering actuator failures during curved road driving are particularly dangerous, with limited available fallback options. This paper proposes a method for achieving a safer in-lane stop using differential braking when steering actuator failure occurs. Lateral motion is induced by the difference in longitudinal forces between the left and right sides, facilitating an in-lane stop maneuver. The vehicle's lateral behavior under differential braking and changes in front-wheel steering angle are modeled. A model-based estimator using a Kalman filter estimates the vehicle's state and steering angle. Based on these estimations and lane information, a controller employing a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is developed. The effectiveness of the differential braking in-lane stop system is validated through simulation.
