The Geometric Product Specification (GPS) and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) languages are the most powerful tools available for linking an ideal design to imperfectly manufactured parts that are never assembled with absolute accuracy. In the design of mechanical systems, the GPS and GD&T methods provide a symbolic language that allows for the complete, clear, and unambiguous definition of permissible variations from ideal geometries to ensure functionality and assemblability. This study proposes a methodology for assigning functional tolerances for the manufacture and assembly of hinges with pins supported by close-range bushings. A test machine was developed to measure the resistant torque in these types of hinges and an easy experimental procedure was used to measure and verify the cylindricity tolerance of the hinge bushings. This allowed a Design for Tolerancing (DfT) approach based on a correlation between the resistant torque values and dimensional and geometric errors. The proposed approach proved to be effective in establishing a relationship between shape, position and orientation errors and the functionality of the hinge. In the scientific literature on these systems, in fact, there are no correlations between the functionality of the hinge in terms of resistant torque and the dimensional and geometric tolerance values.

The article discusses the environmental impacts of deploying innovative, autonomous smart buoys for marine monitoring. These buoys, notable for their compact size and lack of traditional mooring systems, are designed to minimize ecological footprints within marine ecosystems. Equipped with advanced propulsion systems, they can autonomously navigate and maintain stability in challenging sea conditions, making them ideal for monitoring coastal areas with heavy anthropogenic influence. The research introduces a new buoy design paradigm aimed at reducing environmental impact, incorporating essential sensors for monitoring and collecting water samples. A comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted using the Open LCA software and Ecoinvent database, adhering to ISO 14044 standards. This 'cradle-to-gate' assessment evaluates the production of the buoys, applying the ILCD 2018 method to assess a wide range of eco-sustainability indicators including global warming potential, human toxicity, and more. Following the assessment, the buoys were redesigned with a resulting reduction in emissions. The findings from the LCA are instrumental in optimizing the buoy's design, enhancing efficiency, and reducing environmental impacts.

The structures presented in this paper demonstrate that large (8' x 2' x 1'), lightweight, and strong structures are indeed manufacturable through industrial large scale polymer additive manufacturing. The production experiments done to manufacture these structures resulted in process defects that were identified and documented. Processing failures during manufacturing prompted the modification of several process control parameters (layer height, material choice, bed temperature) and post-processing techniques (annealing). This yielded five specimens, each with a unique treatment modification combination. This paper describes an experimental setup for analyzing the effect of these various processing treatments on large-scale additively manufactured thermoplastic structures. Specifically, it presents and compares the uniaxial compression performance results of ABS chopped fiber composite structures made with different processing treatments. Force-displacement experiments were conducted to determine and compare the effects of such processing modifications on the uniaxial compression performance of the different specimens. The data are also analyzed for transient behavior related to plastic deformation and creep. These data indicate that the large additively manufactured polymer composite structural specimens are stiff and strong in bulk. However, the authors do not draw significant conclusions about the effects of the individual processing treatments themselves. The experimental setup and process of identifying and characterizing significant performance effects of manufacturing modifications are generally useful and applicable to other large scale additively manufactured structural products.

Nowadays, modern vehicles comprise a vast number of components made from various materials and manufactured using different techniques, making the management of assemblability, functionality, and cost highly complex. This complexity necessitates controlling geometrical and dimensional deviations to meet product and process demands. Dimensional Management (DM), supported by standards such as ASME-GD&T and ISO-GPS, is increasingly employed for geometrical specification and tolerance analysis. Through Computer-Aided Tolerancing (CAT) tools, tolerances can be considered early in the design process using Design for Tolerancing (DfT) approaches. This study aims to develop and define a methodology for geometric specification allocation and tolerance stack-up analysis of automotive components. The methodology integrates predictive models, DM, and DfT approaches via computer-aided tolerance specification and analysis, enabling comprehensive modeling and simulation of tolerance effects on performance, quality, and assemblability. By applying this methodology to a vehicle engine assembly, its feasibility and effectiveness are demonstrated, showing how the integration of CAT tools and theoretical approaches can significantly enhance design accuracy and efficiency.

Designing customized orthodontic treatments presents a significant challenge due to the diverse and heterogeneous requirements that must be met to correct misaligned teeth and malocclusions. These requirements include specific directives from orthodontists, individual patient considerations, physiological constraints, and technological limitations. The current approach mainly involves collaboration between technicians and orthodontists utilizing specialized CAD software and implementing manual methodologies. This paper outlines the formalization of an algorithm developed to facilitate the design of these medical treatments. A mathematical model based on existing knowledge is proposed to automate the generation of a patient's final dental configuration, which serves as the foundation for producing all necessary devices for the treatment plan. The mathematical model has been validated through collaboration with orthodontists and a manufacturer specialized in orthodontic devices. Feedback obtained from these collaborations demonstrates the effectiveness of the developed solution and its utility as a valuable resource during discussions with orthodontic professionals.

The environmental and economic sustainability of Additive Manufacturing (AM) is an aspect that deserves attention. Proper design frameworks must guide design engineers in conceiving sustainable AM products during the conceptual design phase. Previous scientific studies are not grounded on the lifecycle engineering (LCE) approach since they consider only specific product lifecycle phases (e.g., manufacturing or end-of-life) or are based on the general design for AM guidelines, not considering sustainability drivers (cost and environment). This paper presents an innovative ecodesign for AM framework called eDAM. First, it allows designers to evaluate if and when AM is sustainable from a LCE perspective. Secondly, it enables design engineers to maximize product lifecycle performance by optimizing the adoption of the unique benefits of AM. The eDAM framework was used to re-design a passenger aircraft's interior panels and spacers. Using a bio-inspired shape, designers achieved a 15% weight reduction on the part and 0.2% on the overall aircraft.

The paper presents an overview of current training endeavours for technology-related/professional skill acquisition in immersive environments together with educational/training needs that emerge from the literature. The aim is to establish a general framework for the design and development of educational initiatives for lifelong learners, both HEI students and professional. The paper details how immersive technologies enable a wide variety of skills (e.g. psychomotor, spatial, procedural, decisional skills) to be acquired and trained while reducing the costly and risky conditions of on the field training. On the other hand, the framework will also display how the immersive technologies might trigger high engagement and motivation in active/student-centred learning contexts, making them suitable to provide meaningful learning experiences for the largest possible variety of learning styles, which are vital to ensure life-long learning and embrace the principles of pedagogy and andragogy.

The engineering process is a critical area in the design and development of devices for scientific, industrial and technological applications. This process involves the conceptualization, design, prototyping and production of equipment suitable for specific operations or functions. The main objectives of equipment engineering are to optimize the performance, efficiency of functionality, safety and reliability of devices, as well as to reduce costs and production time. The agri-food sector is an area where the design component can be considered to play a minor role as a non-technological driver of innovation. Unlike sectors like graphic design and communication, intellectual property protection is limited in industrial design, hindering innovation. To address this gap, the presented proposal advocates for an educational initiative to cultivate interest in industrial design among engineering students, following the UNE 144001 IN standard. The proposed methodology, called Value Analysis Methodology in 2 phases (VAM-2P), simplifies value analysis to prompt quick idea generation without focusing on economic aspect. On a first step, the students identify user needs in relation with the object to be redesigned. After that, CAD/CAE tools are used to generate 3D models and evaluate solutions against technical constraints. A case study on eco-design for a harvesting trolley illustrates this approach, emphasizing the use of SolidWorks 3D CAD (R) software to assess environmental impacts. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) and Target 4.4 of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to increase the acquisition of relevant skills needed to promote entrepreneurship among young people and adults.
