Several factors can affect vibration levels during transmission from a tunnel to the ground surface. This study investigates the effect of a tunnel cavity in bedrock with force excitation at the tunnel floor. The tunnel geometry affects the wave propagation around the tunnel and the directivity pattern of waves propagating to the ground surface. For instance, there is no direct propagation path of ground waves from the excitation in the tunnel floor to positions on the tunnel walls. The waves reaching the walls have been diffracted at the tunnel corners. This tunnel shielding effect is here investigated regarding sensor position and direction and directivity of wave propagation up to 1 kHz using the finite element method. An underground tunnel is modelled in 2D and 3D for a bedrock ground typical for Swedish conditions. The results show that the velocity levels at the tunnel floor are higher than at the tunnel wall. It is also shown that the tunnel shielding effect causes decreased vibration levels at mid-frequencies above the tunnel and significant level fluctuations, especially at higher frequencies. The results from the 3D modeling support the 2D results.

When market's demand exceeds the company's manufacturing capacity, subcontracting is generally considered an effective alternative. This work presents an empirical study with real data from a Portuguese company in the footwear industry. The aim is to propose an approach, based on mathematical programming, to support production planning decision-making. More precisely, it is expected to contribute to a working tool that can assist the company in planning the distribution of orders for internal or external production, while minimizing the total production costs. The results point to benefits in reducing the number of orders to produce externally. Further, no relevant differences were found for biweekly and monthly, and by article and by order planning.

Lean philosophy has been widely introduced in many manufacturing and service industries, allowing for increased operational gains and creating a relationship between the work environment and the workers' well-being. This study aims to understand the relationship between Lean and workers' well-being on a shop floor. A questionnaire based on the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model was conducted in an industrial company in Brazil, and a total of 165 responses were collected. Through an exploratory factor analysis (EFA), eight factors were identified (soft Lean practices, Lean training, the pace of work, small group problem solving, interdependencies, problem-solving work demands, engagement and exhaustion). Posteriorly, a cluster analysis allowed us to identify 3 distinct groups in the sample, cluster 1 - includes those employees with a high level of engagement and exhaustion: cluster 2 - employees with a moderate level of engagement and exhaustion;and cluster 3 - employees with a low level of engagement and exhaustion. Additionally, using multiple linear regression analysis, it can be concluded that soft Lean practices (0.46) and the pace of work (-0.23) are the variables that most influence the engagement, and the same can be observed regarding exhaustion, where soft Lean practices (-0.36) and pace of work (0.40) also present statistically significant results.

The size and quantum of silt has a major impact on the operation of hydropower projects in terms of siltation of reservoirs and serious damage to the equipment. Damages to turbine and under water parts due to abrasive action of silt carried by rivers, especially the steep sloping Himalayan rivers, result in frequent shutdowns of power stations with consequent loss in power generation and this has been causing a serious concern. The prevention of medium and coarse fraction of suspended sediment entering into the power intake of run-of-the-river hydroelectric projects is thus of paramount importance. Hence various measures to deal with such sediment problems in run-of-river schemes have to be employed at investigation and design stage for new upcoming projects and also for existing projects at operation and maintenance stage. This paper intends to highlight the various existing methods and recent developments for elimination/reduction of silt content from the reservoir as well as the water conductor system. The concept of bypassing tunnel for managing the suspended sediment in hydro power projects is emerging as a new technique and is discussed in this paper with the help of model studies for Nathpa Jhakri H. E. Project, which has substantiated the importance of this technique.

This study aims to reduce the wear of parts made of gas nitrided AISI 4140 steel. This steel has mechanical and physical characteristics superior to most conventional materials, with a very high hardness after gas nitriding. AISI 4140 steels are often subjected to abrasive wear tests, which can result in mass loss. Efforts are therefore necessary to reduce this degradation. An in-depth optimization study is proposed to examine the effects of the hardness of the steel, the normal load, and the speed of wear. Tools such as experimental designs and analysis of variance are used to decipher the impact of each factor on the response variable studied and identify the predominant factors. Among these factors, the normal load is the most significant, with a lower load resulting in less mass loss. Hardness is the second most significant factor, Speed is the least. The hardness also has an interaction effect with the other two factors, which reduces mass loss. The optimal conditions retained are a normal load of 100 N, a Speed of 4.18 m/s, and a Hardness of 1092 HV.

This study employs a numerical approach to investigate the flow distribution characteristics within the parallel branch pipes of a water cooling system in diesel locomotives. The analysis reveals a considerable non-uniformity in the flow distribution within the parallel branch pipes of the cooling system, with 15% flow deviations. To address this issue, a study of the pipeline's velocity and pressure fields was conducted. The results uncovere that changes of the area of recirculation regions and static pressure are the primary contributors to this non-uniform flow distribution. As a solution, interceptors were installed in both the manifold box and the branch pipe inlets to regulate the flow within the pipeline. Among the measures involving using flow interceptors in the manifold box, when three interceptors are used and their cross section areas are S-1 = 32 cm(2), S-2 = 28 cm(2), S-3 = 24 cm(2), the most effective regulation appears, the flow deviation decreases to approximately 6%, but the pressure drop increases 11%. Installing one interceptor with different cross section area at every branch pipe inlet reduces the flow distribution unevenness from 15% to about 2%, the pressure drop increases 10%. This underscores the effectiveness of installing an interceptor at every branch pipe inlet for flow regulation.

Recent studies have been conducted in the application of machine learning (ML)-based dispatching methods. Unfortunately, the internal dispatching behavior of such ML-based models is difficult to interpret. Therefore, this study transforms the ML-based model to a rule-based dispatching model that is fast and interpretable. An ML-based dispatching model is first trained using job-pair data. The model is then transformed to a rule-based dispatching model by identifying the rules through a post-hoc interpretable algorithm called Rule-COSI+. The proposed method is evaluated using a dataset that was obtained from a commercial scheduling engine used in semiconductor fabs. The experimental results showed that both ML-based and rule-based models could obtain exactly the same dispatching results as the original dispatching rules, but the rule-based model was faster and more interpretable than the ML-based model.

The nonlinear dynamics of towed two-wheeled trailers is investigated using a spatial, 4-DoF model. Namely, the yaw, pitch, and roll motions are all taken into account. Geometrical nonlinearities and the non-smooth characteristics of the tire forces are considered. A linear state feedback controller with feedback delay is designed to enhance the stability performance of the trailer. Numerical bifurcation analysis is performed to investigate the large amplitude vibrations and unsafe (bistable) zones, where the stable rectilinear motion and the stable limit cycle coexist with each other. The effects of the control gain and the feedback delay of the controller are presented on bifurcation diagrams. It is shown, that with appropriately chosen control gains, the size of the bistable region can be limited.

Remanufacturing plays an important role to contribute for circular economy by extending the life cycle of used products. Remanufacturing is a recovery process of worn-out product through multi-process remanufacturing to achieve quality, specifications, and performance "as good as new" condition. It Remanufacturing processes focuses on disassembling, cleaning, repairing, and reassembling used products or components to restore them to like-new or even better-than-new condition. The basic problem in a remanufacturing process planning is how to appropriately select the manufacturing/remanufacturing process (technology) to have in a remanufacturing company that has the capability to ensure "like new" quality of remanufactured product. This paper presents a mathematical model for optimizing remanufacturing processes planning by considering quality loss and carbon emissions. The model was formulated using integer linear programming to obtain optimal solution. We study a remanufacturing system with four stage processes under varying quality condition of incoming core. This study also considered multiple remanufacturing processes that can be selected for each stage of the processes, then the processes may lead to different process characteristics, i.e. quality tolerance and carbon emission. A numerical example was used to validate the proposed model for a case of remanufactured hydraulic cylinder process planning. The model consistently shows an optimal solution for the case.

Mining truck suspensions are prone to performance degradation under complex external excitation of the mining area, leading to high safety risks and maintenance costs. However, the lack of unsprung kinematic information and harsh operating environments lead to inadequate accuracy of current physical models. On the other hand, data-driven methods partially address the issue of incomplete information, but suffer from the absence of interpretability and generalization. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) for precise suspension characteristic identification of mining trucks. Specifically, the physical model of the longitudinal-vertical dynamics of the mining truck is established. Then, based on the model, baseline values of suspension parameters are regressed through the instrumental variable method. Therefore, the hybrid modeling architecture is established to precisely identify suspension parameters by utilizing a recurrent neural network. Under this architecture, the states of the mining truck can be effectively updated. Real truck experiments demonstrate the proposed hybrid model outperforms traditional physical and data-driven models in estimating suspension nonlinear parameters and truck dynamic characteristics under typical longitudinal motions.
