Petri Nets are well known as a tool to model discrete systems. Petri Nets possess arc weights that represent the number of tokens consumed by a transition from its input place (input arc weight) or deposited into its output place (output arc weight). The arc weights are fundamental during the simulation run ('dynamic analysis') of the Petri Net. Petri Net theory also offers static analyses (aka 'structural analysis,' or invariants), which are quicker and do not change with the dynamics (e.g., initial tokens or firing times of the transitions). This paper attempts to distribute 'firing times' as arc weights on Petri Nets so that more structural analyses can be performed - a so-called quasi-dynamic approach;for example, this quasi-dynamic analysis can find a faster route from a source to a destination (minimum job completion time). Otherwise, finding the minimum job completion time using simulations is slow and may not provide the correct answer. The approach presented in this paper for finding the minimum job completion time can be used in many branches of engineering, such as manufacturing.

Dredging operation is happening at an increased rate due to the impetus gained towards inland navigation and land reclamation. The spud system is integral component of a Cutter suction dredger (CSD) which anchors the hull at the dredging location. The spud embedded on soil maintains the position of the dredger and offers resistance to the motion of the CSD. In this present study the spud was modeled as a Euler Bernoulli beam using finite element analysis. The resistance offered by the soil was evaluated experimentally. Soil stiffness is modeled using two spring elements which restraints the motion of the spud in the transverse and rotational direction. The spud system was subjected to external force due to wave loading. The wave load was determined along the length of the spud using Morison equation. Heave and pitch are the degrees of freedom of the dredge hull which were restraint by the spud. The ship rigid body dynamics was identified using the experimental study. The identified dredge hull was coupled to the spud. Numerical model of the spud system was subjected to random wave loading. A case study was carried out using MonteCarlo simulation by varying the soil stiffness. The maximum response of the system was evaluated at the top of the spud. A meta model for the system was developed based on the maximum response at spud and soil stiffness using Gaussian process emulator (GPE). During the validation study it was observed that the meta-model was predicting the soil stiffness accurately. This indicates that the condition monitoring of the embedment of the spud can be assessed by the meta-model developed using GPE.

Increased global temperature has dictated the need to reduce carbon emissions in the manufacturing sector, while it is expected to both improve sustainability and maintain the quality of manufacturing processes. Green strategies, such as Zero Defect Manufacturing, Circular Economy and Sustainability have been proposed, with different key performance indicators (KPIs) with unidentified relationship between those KPIs and process parameters. Up to now, no study has identified this relationship, or tried to combine different green strategies and KPIs. This study aims to investigate the impact of specific process parameters (process power & speed) for the case of welding on KPIs for Zero Defect Manufacturing (defect rate), Circular Economy (energy consumption) and Sustainability (carbon footprint). The methodological approach was based on previously published framework, while a specific case study was used to showcase the complexity of relationship between the process parameters and the relevant KPIs. The main outcome of this study is the non-linear relationship shown in most cases, such as in the case of the impact of power and speed on the defect rate and on the carbon footprint. In addition, KPIs from one green strategy could be applicable to the other, via defining the link between quality of welding, energy consumption and carbon emissions. The latter could be used to define a holistic strategy incorporating different strategies and KPIs for improving sustainability in manufacturing.

The widespread use of the internet, combined with the prevalence of cybersecurity threats such as botnets, has resulted in significant economic losses for manufacturing enterprises. An AI-powered network intrusion detection system is required to address the growing number of botnet attacks caused by increased machine-to-machine communication. Several Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms were used in this study to detect botnet attacks on seven IoT devices, with the goal of developing highly secure and accurate models for detecting security threats. After comparing its performance to other models, the proposed model was found to be highly performant, accurate, and robust for threat detection. After implementing different models, 2-CNN model demonstrated the highest accuracy level of 99.95% in DANMINI Video Door Phone Doorbell Hands-free Wireless Intercom. Furthermore, it was noted that the performance of the Deep Belief Network (DBN) model was inferior to that of other Deep Learning (DL) models in identifying Gafgyt botnet attacks.

Teleoperated vehicles are gaining importance during the transition to fully automated vehicles since at the current state of development automated vehicles are not capable of operating in all conditions and environments. Despite the high potential of the concept of teleoperated vehicles, there are still challenges to be dealt with. As the teledriver is physically not present in the vehicle during teleoperation, the communication between the teledriver and the vehicle takes place via internet. That could lead to a delayed transmission of the telemetry and visual signals. Additionally, the teledriver's perception of the vehicle motion is reduced. This study demonstrates the differences between teledriving and normal driving from a theoretical perspective and how the stability of the vehicle-teledriver system is affected by the communication delay and the reduced perception of the vehicle motion. To increase the driver's perception and the ease of control of the teleoperated vehicle, a simple structured and tunable steering wheel torque emulation concept is introduced.

Post-disaster field surveys confirmed that impacts of floating objects entrained by tsunami flows with onshore structural facilities caused various levels of damage. This paper presents the findings of a series of hydraulic experiments conducted to understand the driftage of multiple cuboids and their interaction with the free-standing square-prism structure in terms of initiation of driftage, spreading over the plane, collision modes with the model structure and yielded impact forces placed in different configurations such as side by side, and stacked behind on other. Results indicated that the wakes generated around the objects caused them to drift in distinct trajectories and encountered an overall maximum spreading angle between +/- 4 degrees and +/- 10 degrees from the centre of geometry from the initial position. Simultaneous and non-simultaneous collisions were also observed. Objects placed side by side showed a gradual increment in collision forces with the increment in wave conditions. On the other hand, debris stacked behind others led to higher peak impact force for lower flows and reduced impact forces with increased flow conditions. It might be due to the increment in the number of debris, their movements and considerable wave energy losses during the driftage process. Overall, a 5-40% additional increment in collision forces was observed considering all cases.

In the paper, a lateral control strategy is presented using Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) for automated vehicles. The main idea is that the physics information is incorporated into the training process, which leads to an improvement in the performance level of the control algorithm. Moreover, in the highly nonlinear range of the lateral dynamics, which is not properly covered by the training dataset, the stability of the vehicle is guaranteed. The results are compared to a conventional neural network trained to control the vehicle.

In today's dynamic business environment, effective Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is crucial for maintaining market competitiveness. Traditional PLM faces challenges related to product quality, design, recycling, and marketing delays, resulting in lost sales, order backlog, increasing pollutant and environmental impacts. This paper proposes a contemporary approach by integrating Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) into the PLM cycle, focusing on the recycling phase to address environmental concerns, particularly plastic waste. The study evaluates the impact of incorporating Omnichannel (OC) strategies and social media insights into the PLM framework. OC strategies foster collaboration among stakeholders, addressing challenges associated with lost sales and order backlog and social responsibility concerns. Social media analytics provide valuable customer insights, enabling prompt issue identification and resolution. The research compares a system using traditional PLM methods against one incorporating EPR and OC strategies with system dynamics approach. It aims to demonstrate howthis integrated approach enhances awareness, encourages collaboration, and streamlines plastic waste collection. The findings emphasize the potential to improve environmental sustainability, operational efficiency, and market competitiveness. This paper advocates for a sustainable PLM framework, offering insights to businesses navigating environmental responsibility, customer engagement, and operational excellence.

The presented work is focused on applying continuous improvement tools to reduce waste and process variability throughout an air-conditioned pipe production line (PL), to determine the line's capacity and improve efficiency so that the desired productivity levels can be achieved. The line's processes were analyzed, together with the integrated application of continuous improvement and Lean tools to determine and improve its production capacity. Thus, a variability study was carried out, focused on balancing the PL, to reduce the main bottlenecks. After balancing, several improvements were performed in the line layout, improving the line efficiency, and reducing unnecessary employees' movements. Simultaneously, the Constant Work-In-Progress (CONWIP) methodology was implemented facilitating the management of the component's production before their entry into the PL. Other modifications were also implemented, both mechanically and in terms of documentation, to support production and contribute to the line's increase in efficiency, quality, and safety. The results obtained are relevant, with an increase in the capacity of the line and its productivity and efficiency, from 28.81% to 47.21%, and an increase of 18% in the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

Powder metallurgy (PM) is a rapidly growing field that offers a cost-effective way to manufacture complex-shaped metal components with superior properties compared to conventional manufacturing methods. However, PM involves the production of green compacts, which are prone to defects such as cracks, voids, and inclusions due to their fragile nature. These defects can compromise the final properties of the sintered components, resulting in high rejection rates and increased costs. Therefore, the need for reliable and efficient non-destructive testing (NDT) methods to detect defects in green compacts has become a focal point of research. Traditional methods for crack detection are based on destructive imaging techniques, where, polished sections of the specimen are observed under an optical microscope or scanning electron microscope. These methods, however, are time-consuming and cannot predict the initiation and likelihood of a crack in green compacts. In contrast, this study reviews different NDT methods proposed by researchers in the field to detect cracks and defects in green compacts. The discussed NDT methods include thermal imaging, X-Ray imaging, acoustic and ultrasound testing (UT), eddy current based testing (ECT), camera-based techniques, and simulations based on the Drucker-Prager Cap (DPC) model. We further review the usage of machine learning (ML) techniques for classification and decision-making. All methods are introduced along with a discussion of their limitations and merits.
