This study introduces an innovative control strategy for a steer-by-wire (SbW) force feedback actuator, tailored for automotive use. The actuator integrates a direct drive electric motor and a magnetorheological brake (MR-brake) within a streamlined, compact design. This electric motor delivers torque essential for the desired steering feel and ensures swift responsiveness. Concurrently, the MR-brake, noted for its compactness and energy efficiency, contributes passive damping and robust end-stop torque capabilities. The synergistic use of these components allows for a smaller and more resource-efficient electric motor design. A critical aspect of this strategy is the implementation of a torque splitter, essential for replicating the steering feel associated with Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems. This splitter distributes the required feedback torque between MR-brake torque and e-motor torque, ensuring high fidelity and consistent stability across a range of vehicular dynamics and maneuvers. Notably, maintaining a subjectively satisfying steering feel under conditions where torque proportions vary between actuators presents a significant challenge. The proposed actuator design, with its focus on performance, safety, and reliability, is particularly well-suited for advanced SbW systems demanding high standards in these areas.

Sporadic change in mineral concentrate demand, and the need to recover production losses that emanate during machine maintenance unveiled a new Reconfigurable Vibrating Screen (RVS) machine design. Therefore, it is vital to ascertain which configuration the machine ought to be set up to, at different time spans in order to fulfil varying mineral concentrates demand and recover production losses owing to machine maintenance. Therefore, there is a need to develop a knowledge advisor that guide the users of the RVS machine on how to configure the machine properly, and on the reconfiguration time of the machine in order to fulfil varying mineral concentrate demand and recover production losses owing to machine maintenance. In light of this, this study propose a decision support system that automatically advice RVS Machine users on how to configure the machine properly, the machine reconfiguration time and the inventory spare details that is required to reconfigure the machine, towards meeting new mineral concentrate demand and recovering production losses. The developed decision support system was tested using the historical maintenance time record of a component that could fail in the machine and an assumed mineral concentrate demand quantity. The result of the decision support system evaluation exercise revealed that the time it will take to recover a production loss of 31.5 h and meet mineral concentrate demand of 8500 tons of the granite, when the machine is set up to operate at configuration capacity size of 4700 mm x 2500 mm machine screening capacity is 75.9941 h.

Additive manufacturing is one of the most prominent technologies seen as an enabler for circular economy strategies, including the development of additive symbiotic networks. There is a gap in the literature regarding the understanding of how additive symbiotic networks can be developed, namely in identifying the wastes and by-products and additive manufacturing technologies that can be used to valorize these resources. This study aims to review the existing literature on the topics of industrial symbiosis and additive manufacturing. A sample of 83 documents was reached, with only 25 highlighting the potential for developing industrial symbiosis networks in the additive manufacturing context. Results show that the most used technologies to incorporate recycled materials included fused deposition modelling, fused filament fabrication and selective laser melting. Regarding waste or by-products exchanges, plastic polymers, biological wastes and metal powders are some of the most frequently exchanged materials. This makes evidence of the additive manufacturing industry's potential to develop additive symbiotic networks in which wastes and by-products from other industries may be used as material inputs for additive manufacturing processes and technologies.

Slender engineered structures are sensitive to unwanted vibration effects mainly due to their soft nature. With respect to physical laws, the response of the structure reaches different non-linear modes which depend on the ratio or difference of natural and excitation frequencies. The non-stationary response near the lock-in region is quasi-periodic in nature, with the frequency of beating varying with the change in distance from the locking interval. This property is naturally affected by the assumption of combined random and harmonic excitation. In the paper, several details that contribute to the probabilistic characteristics of the system on a slow time scale are described using partial amplitudes of the response. The problem is illustrated with a non-linear SDOF oscillator of the van der Pol type, where the additive excitation combines harmonic and random components. In the stochastic averaging method, the expression for the response is written in trigonometric form using partial amplitudes. The solution to the Fokker-Planck equation for the cross-PDF of the partial amplitudes is found using the Galerkin approximation.

Digital twins have a wide range of applications throughout the life cycle of computerized numerical controlled (CNC) machines. One particular manifestation of digital twins is the creation of models derived from virtual commissioning. These models actively accompany a physical machine throughout the engineering phase, but are typically discarded afterward. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of operation-parallel real-time simulation using virtual commissioning models for the early detection and elimination of defects in workpieces produced by CNC machines. The simulation model interfaces directly with the control drive, producing a virtual workpiece simultaneously with the actual manufacturing process in real-time, thus enabling necessary optimizations. Simultaneously, a virtual comparative model operates in the background to detect errors in the workpiece during runtime. This approach provides the advantage of eliminating the requirement for post-production quality inspections since the operational-parallel simulation conducts the inspection function. In addition, defects in the workpiece can be detected early so that the machine can be stopped in the event of a tolerance violation. At last, a framework is proposed to enable a knowledge-based model derived from identified defects. This framework can identify errors in early engineering stages, including the CAM planning phase, by using the knowledge from the production phase.

Competitive yet sustainable production will be a real challenge for companies, especially in the current market conditions that have been affected by the covid-19 pandemic. In the future, if companies want to stay in the market and be competitive, theywill have to adapt their production to requirements such as the Industry 4.0 concept, one of the benefits of which is to increase the productivity of companies and a relatively fast return on investment. For this reason, the main objective of this paper is to find out the current status of enterprises in the electrical manufacturing sector in terms of implementing the Industry 4.0 concept. The findings were made through a questionnaire survey in which 50 companies from this sector participated. Surprisingly, the results of this survey showed that more than half of the respondents, despite all the possible benefits of the Industry 4.0 concept, are still not planning to implement it, while the remaining respondents are already in various stages of implementation. Moreover, although the Industry 4.0 concept has been discussed since 2011, the data showed that 20% of respondents are not familiar with the concept. The respondents who answered this way belonged to the group of micro or small enterprises, where this is understandable.

The conversion department is in desperate need of increasing production while reducing input resources. The conversion department is a recently formed department inside company XYZ in South Africa, and it is currently moving from the introduction phase to the growth phase of its life cycle. The current productivity in the Converting department is a significant obstacle that impedes the growth of the South African-based factory and is unsuitable for long-term operations. Lead times that are a fraction of the takt time, staff and equipment utilization ranging from 40% to 70%, no standardised work, and the absence of standard operating procedures all have a detrimental impact on productivity and need the adoption of industrial engineering approaches. As a result, the study will use industrial engineering techniques such aswork-study, and ECRS (remove, combine, reorganize, simplify) to analyze the reasons that contribute to overall low productivity and strategies to improve it. To answer research questions, researchers used a pragmatic research philosophy to examine data based on these components. The researcher also conducted a literature review to validate current knowledge of manufacturing department productivity. The study's goal is to boost overall productivity and help the department navigate the growth-to-maturity phase of its life cycle.

Remanufacturing is a strategy for processing a product at its end of life. Remanufacturing aims to return a used product or a product that has reached its end of life to the performance and condition of a new product and is equipped with the same new product warranty. Product design is an essential part of a product that increases the remanufacturability of the product. In this study, we discuss how to improve the product design of refrigerators. Refrigerators are white goods products almost every household has. If a refrigerator is not designed to be remanufactured, it will generate a lot of e-waste. This study proposes design improvement of refrigerator products by using the guidelines from design for remanufacturing based on life-cycle thinking. The proposed design improvement considers the product's overall life cycle. With the proposed revision of the refrigerator product design, the refrigerators are expected to be more remanufacturable and produce a more negligible environmental impact.

This paper makes a more in-depth study on the relationship between vehicle running speed and the development of wheel polygon when the wheel has an initial polygon. Firstly, in order to highlight the research focus and ignore the secondary factors, the vertical coupling vibration model of vehicle and track is reasonably equivalent simplified, and the wheel polygon vertical vibration model is established. Then, in order to obtain the variation of wheel longitudinal creep wear on the wheel circumference and the development trend of wheel polygon, the mathematical model of wheel/rail longitudinal creep wear under alternating normal force is established. By calculating the wear power of each point on the wheel circumference at different speeds, the phase relationship between the wear power distribution curve and the wheel radial jump curve is obtained. The simulation results show that, speed can change the distribution of wear power on the wheel circumference, and have a certain impact on the amplitude and phase of wear power. According to the phase relationship, the corresponding speed range can be obtained, and the train running in this speed range can inhibit the deterioration of the initial polygon.

The paper compares two optimal control methods - Reinforcement Learning and Model Predictive Control - for adaptive speed control in the presence of road obstacles to enhance ride comfort. Both methods use a model for training or prediction and a reward or cost function to achieve a desired control objective. Using the same quarter-car model and objective function for both methods, differences in planned speed profiles, optimality of the control objective, and differences in computational time are analysed through simulations over a series of cosine-shaped road bumps.
