Plasma electrolytic polishing (PEP) is a technology with high efficiency, environmental friendly, simple manufacturing process, high quality and ability to improve corrosion resistance. Plasma electrolytic polishing improves corrosion resistance by forming oxides on the surface of workpieces and achieving passivation. In this study, the SUS 316 was polished with different plasma electrolytic polishing electrolytes. We observed the influence of electrolyte on the ratio of chromium to iron to understand the effect of plasma electrolytic polishing technology on improving the corrosion resistance of materials. After plasma electropolishing of SUS 316 using different electrolytes (voltage: 320 V;time: 180 s;temperature: 80 degrees C), it was found that the surface components were mainly oxides of iron and oxides of chromium. The oxide is concentrated on the surface of the workpiece with a thickness of about 3750 nm. Plasma electrolytic polishing with different electrolytes will produce oxide layers with different thicknesses. After plasma electrolytic polishing, the stainless steel workpiece has a surface chromium-iron ratio of 1.64 (optimal condition). This study shows that plasma electrolytic polishing technology can optimize the oxide layer on the surface of stainless steel and achieve the effect of improving corrosion resistance.

A three-stage, comprehensive yet lean methodology for optimizing CNC machining is presented by example of rough cutting a complex pocket in a steel part to minimize machining time. First, CAM software is used for toolpath planning according to experience. Second, Taguchi method determines the best values of toolpath parameters (depth of cut, overlap, cutting pattern and cutter diameter) and their relative importance on the pertinent criterion, in this case machining time. In the third stage, machining parameters, i.e. cutting speed, feed per tooth and depth of cut were optimized by a genetic algorithm. The objective function included machining time, while taking into consideration technological and quality constraints, i.e. power, surface roughness and dynamic stability. The approach is demonstrated through CAM-based simulation.

In the design of supersonic and hypersonic missiles, it is essential to perform aerodynamic heating analyses. These analyses can be computationally expensive, as it requires time-dependent conjugate heat transfer analyses. This study proposes a loosely coupled fluid-structural thermal analysis strategy to reduce the computational cost of aerodynamic heating analyses. The proposed strategy solves the fluid and structural equations separately and exchanges information at the interface between two domains. To validate the proposed approach, it is applied to two different missile configurations with different flight scenarios and compared the results to those from the traditional approach, flight data and other published results. The results showed that the loosely coupled has the potential to significantly reduce the time and computational resources required for aerodynamic heating analyses, all while maintaining results accuracy. This has the potential to accelerate the design and development of new missile technologies.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has gained significant evolution in recent years that, if properly harnessed, may meet or exceed expectations in a wide range of application fields. However, because Machine Learning (ML) models have a black-box structure, end users frequently seek explanations for the predictions made by these learning models. Through tools, approaches, and algorithms, Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) gives descriptions of black-box models to better understand the models' behaviour and underlying decision-making mechanisms. The AI development in companies enables them to participate in Industry 4.0. The need to inform users of transparent algorithms has given rise to the research field of XAI. This paper provides a brief overview and introduction to the subject of XAI while highlighting why this topic is generating more and more attention in many sectors, such as industry.

Design patterns are widely adopted in software engineering and can be defined as "general design solutions to recurrent problems". We extend this approach to improve the modeling activities required for addressing optimization problems, specifically those coming from production planning in manufacturing firms. We propose a general framework for optimization patterns, including general, problem and solver specific patterns as well as data connection patterns used to collect and effectively use the large data sets that can be provided by firms that adopt Industry 4.0 paradigm, or also the newer and complementary 5.0 paradigm. We then provide a vertical application of such patterns to address a strategic planning problem inspired by a real application in a manufacturing company operating in Italy. The case study shows all the main activities that begin with the problem description, continues through data definition and optimization patterns selection, finally leading to a prototypical solution to the problem.

Articulated heavy vehicles (AHVs) face yaw instabilities, especially under extensive propulsion or regenerative braking force on the driven axles, risking their directional stability and potentially leading to jackknifing. Hence, safe operating envelopes (SOEs) are essential for allocating propulsion and braking forces among different units. This study proposes a novel approach to ensure yaw stability by reducing longitudinal slip limits of the electric motors (EMs) based on side-slip, enhancing stability and acceleration performance. Validation through simulations and real vehicle tests shows promising results.

This paper explores the effects of Direct Yaw Control (DYC) on driver's maneuverability feeling and vehicle dynamics. DYC is implemented in the experimental vehicle equipped with four-wheel independent controlled In-Wheel Motors (IWMs). The effects on vehicle dynamics are validated through open-loop testing. Subsequently, the closed-loop test is conducted to confirm the correlation between subjective evaluation and Vehicle dynamics data.

A hybrid finite element (FE) and statistical energy analysis (SEA) model is established for computing the vibroacoustic response of finite-sized panels excited by a turbulent boundary layer (TBL). In the hybrid model, the TBL is modelled using Corcos' model in the wavenumber domain. The panels are modelled using finite elements, and acoustic waves in the fluid space below the panels are modelled using SEA. The hybrid model expands the application range of TBL empirical model and uses FE-SEA to calculate the structural acoustic response. Numerical examples of a complex panel with a corrugated core, typically used in the construction of high-speed train bodies, are presented to verify the hybrid model and demonstrate its usefulness in modelling the vibroacoustic characteristics of complex structures. For complex panels, using analytical methods is difficult. The hybrid model proposed in this study is easily implemented and robust in modelling the vibroacoustic performance of complicated structures.

Dibang River is a tributary river of the Brahmaputra that originates and flows through the Mishmi Hills and northeast India from the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The river meets Brahmaputra upstream of Guwahati near Assam. Newly built 6.2 km long Bridge ((28 degrees 06' 54.1 '' N 95 degrees 49' 10.9 '' E)) is a beam bridge across Dibang River which connects Bomjir and Malek villages and provides all-weather connectivity between Dambuk and Roing in eastern part of Arunachal Pradesh, India.. Continuous migration of the river towards right bank and heavy rainfall in July 2020 resulted in heavy flow of runoff water in the Dibang river resulting a breach in guide bund which is situated 600 M upstream of bridge. Studies done include desk studies with satellite imageries, survey along river bed profile, analyses of rainfall, numerical model and design of remedial measures. Based on the numerical model studies, it was found that the river carries a discharge of 30000 m(3)/s without overflowing. Remedial measures were proposed as per IRC: 89-1997 which is combination of river training and embankment strengthening adopting gabions using locally available stones and seven repelling spurs at 600 m upstream of bridge. Post monitoring indicates good accretion between spur and scouring of revetments in non-spur locations. Hence, additional three more repelling spur was proposed. The details of studies and geometry of remedial measures are presented.

In this paper, we present a fatigue reliability assessment of shape memory alloy (SMA) parts by adopting a recent probabilistic approach based on the extension of the Dang Van (DV) high cycle fatigue (HCF) criterion to SMAs. The adopted approach considers the probabilistic aspect of the DV criterion and the reliability assessment is established using uniaxial loading experimentations taken from the literature. The aleatory uncertainty quantification of the material parameters and the loading path parameters have been taken into account. In this work, the sampling technique has been modified. Indeed, the fatigue reliability is computed by using the Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) and it is compared with the Monte Carlo Simulation (MSC) technique. The cyclic loading is accomplished in the fully martensitic phase state with a stabilized cyclic response known as elastic shake-down. In this work, the HCF reliability prediction is improved by reducing the computational time compared and considering rare events. Moreover, iso-probabilistic Dang Van zones (ISPDV) are obtained by fixing a desired reliability.
