We present an approach to assembly planning procedure based on assembly features and assembly processes. Most of the feature-based process planning has been done in the machining domain. The focus of this paper is to map that methodology to assembly planning using four phases: feasibility of the approach, development of assembly feature taxonomy, development of assembly process taxonomy, and development of rule for assembly process selection for a given assembly model. The first phase was based on a literature review and previous authors' work in machining process planning. In the second and third phases, we developed taxonomies of assembly features and assembly processes and implemented some portions as a research prototype IMAPlan. The fourth phase is devoted to building a rule base for assembly process selection based on dimensions and tolerance and affinity between assembly features and alternate assembly processes. The approach is demonstrated on a simple test case with several various assembly requirements.

The technology of creating and operating acoustic maps is commonly used in the assessment of the acoustic climate of noise sources. For this purpose, appropriate measurement procedures and tools are used to support the implementation of modeling and simulation tasks of sound propagation. For the purpose of assessing noise in the environment are used indicators representing the physical features of sound. Research on the perception of sounds in the environment indicates the importance of subjective acoustic impressions for the assessment of noise. The article proposes taking into account subjective sound features using acoustic maps in this assessment. A proposal for modeling noise annoyance as a way to assess the acoustic climate is presented in this context. The presented method of assessing the acoustic environment is part of the development of the SmartCity concept by using advanced methods and techniques to improve the quality of life of residents in urbanized areas.

Laser powder directed energy deposition (LP-DED) is an exponentially growing additive manufacturing process. The process is mainly used for repairing/remanufacturing operations, for the production of large components, or for the production of components with tailored characteristics. Despite the many benefits in the adoption of the LP-DED process, the applications are nowadays still limited. The reasons lie partly in a limited knowledge of the relationship between process parameters and the properties achieved in the final product. Specifically, one of the critical factors influencing the mechanical properties is the porosity of the part. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the effect of the main process parameters, such as laser power, travel speed and powder feed rate, on the porosity of AISI 316L samples produced by the LP-DED process. Results showed that by tuning process parameters, it is possible to produce samples with a density up to 99.9%. In the range of process parameters investigated in this work, porosities are mainly reduced by increasing the laser power;moreover, at lower power values, the increase in powder feed rate significantly improves the part density.

This paper explores the idea of Kaizen as engineering change and follow-up in both Product - and Process Development. Typical problems faced by organizations is the integration of product development and production, and the implementation of new technologies in both product and processes, including supporting processes. We suggest that Kaizen could be a valid approach to mitigate these problems if applied systematically as an integrated part of the engineering change process related to both product changes and process changes. To explore this hypothesis, we have carried out case study research of four different manufacturing companies from three different countries and combined it with a literature study of both Kaizen, and Lean engineering/Lean Product and Process Development. From the resulting findings we have developed a framework for Kaizen as engineering change and follow-up that could be further explored by researchers and practitioners alike.

Recently, the aeronautical industry has developed materials that have a good relationship between lightness and high performance. Composite materials are those that fully meet this requirement. Among the composite materials, laminated materials made of metallic fibres stand out, but the milling process of these multi-materials is not an easy task due to the individual nature of each material. Poor choice of parameters and milling tools can cause damage to the part, and these must be discarded, generating high costs for the company. To have a well-adjusted milling process for these multi-materials, it is necessary to monitor vibration signals during the machining process to understand the influence of parameters and tools during the milling process. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the performance of two different tools (2 and 3 flutes) coated with tetrahedral amorphous hard carbon (ta-C) during the milling of CFRP/Al/CFRP stacks in a dry environment. Vibration analysis was considered in relation to tool wear. Tool wear and chip morphology in the milling process were analyzed by optical microscopy. The tool wear results measured showed an increase in wear on the surface with the increase in cutting speed. The chip showed different morphologies as the cutting speed was increased.

The global population is increasing and the demand for seafood is also growing. Since the capture production is becoming unsustainable, aquaculture production has to meet the requirements of sea food demand. The primary production is coming from the nearshore cage system in developing countries. The aquaculture industry is now keen to establish a sophisticated infrastructure in offshore, due to better water quality and higher production capacity. The present study describes about different shapes of offshore cages, such as square, circular, hexagon and octagon subjected to regular waves. The frequency and time domain analysis are carried out for each cage using ANSYS AQWA. The added mass, radiation potential damping and response amplitude operators are studied for free floating conditions. The circular cage obtained highest added mass in both heave and pitch and hexagon cage obtained highest radiation damping. Octagon cage obtained highest RAOs in both frequency domain and time domain analysis and highest mooring line tension. The hexagon cage is better performing in all the wave conditions considered.

A stiffened structure is integral to complex structures such as ships. An advantage of the stiffened plate is that it has a greater load-carrying capacity. Therefore, structural health monitoring of stiffened structures is essential in a ship structure. The stiffened structure is modeled as a coupled system with a plate and stiffener forming the subsystems coupled with welded joints. The complex coupled system is modeled using finite element analysis. The coupling springs between a plate and beam could replicate the modal characteristics of welded joints in a stiffened structure. Since the welding characteristics could change depending on the operating conditions, the coupling spring was varied to account for the uncertainty in the weld strength. A hyperspace of coupling springs, one longitudinal and two torsional, was spanned using the Latin hypercube sampling technique following a uniform distribution. The eigenvalue problem for the stiffened structure was solved, and the modal characteristics of the system were determined. Dynamic features of the system, such as natural frequency, mode shape and frequency response function (FRF), were extracted. A metamodel for the system was developed using a Gaussian process emulator (GPE). The dataset was generated for a driving point response since this location's response magnitude was high. A validation study carried out on the metamodel indicated a good prediction of the weld strength. Future work would include a study to span more sensing locations and damping.

This article focuses on the study of the relationship between consumer awareness and footwear customization in the context of the idea of Industry 4.0. An analysis of the results of a survey was conducted, focusing on key aspects such as consumer preferences for personalized products and the level of understanding of Industry 4.0 terminology. 261 respondents participated in the survey, including 223 (85.4%) women and 38 (14.6%) men. The purpose of the article is to conduct a survey and formulate conclusions based on the research hypothesis. The purpose of the survey is to learn about and assess the level of consumer awareness of shoe buyers vs. its impact on the development of shoe customization. The results show significant relationships between social factors and consumer awareness, particularly highlighting the influence of gender, age, education, and place of residence on purchase preferences. The analysis aims to provide a deeper understanding of the factors determining consumer choices in the context of product personalization and the implications of Industry 4.0 ideas on consumer awareness.

The incorporation of polymeric materials in car structure components, over the years, has been playing a key role in the automotive sector, enabling the production of more efficient and ecological vehicles. Among the many options to fix these components, there are clips and snap-fits, which facilitate assembly and disassembly, and reduce the total mass. This work arises from the need for a more rigorous control involving some internal standardized fixation points of polymeric components, namely door panels. Experimental tests were carried out according to the specifications of the automotive brand, to enable incorporation as standard components. Using the Finite Element Method (FEM), numerical simulations were performed, and the approach validated. Improvement of the fixation point was next undertaken, by making changes in the areas thatwere identified as critical. The improved fixation point met the specifications, and it was proposed as new geometry for standard door panels.

The potential of additional steering possibilities (like rearwheel or all-wheel steering) is analyzed for critical situations to investigate possible safety improvements. For this purpose, a dynamic optimization problem is formulated to find the best possible maneuver. The optimization criterion is to maximize the entry speed into a constant radius 90 degrees -curve. The optimization problem is solved for different steering topologies, and the results quantify the increase in maximum entry speed, highlighting the potential for safety improvements. Further, the optimal steering strategies are determined, and they show interesting characteristics like initial diagonal driving or, in other cases, a transition from initial out-of-phase steering to in-phase steering.
