The term Human-Centric Digital Twin (HCDT) has been recently coined meaning the design and the simulation of complex production systems by integrating human factors. This paper presents an HCDT system architecture focused on an enhanced 3D virtual model, embedding human interaction information in product and process information. Such a model extends the current features of AutomationML (AML) framework, a recently defined standard for digitization in Industry 4.0, by specific human-related data. The framework has been primarily integrated into a Virtual Reality (VR) scenario to support, predict and study the human-system interactions in the early stages of industrial machine design. The infrastructure has been validated on a real case developed in collaboration with an Italian manufacturing company, world leader in automatic machine design and production. User testing was conducted within a virtual environment, where the HCDT enriched the 3D virtual model of the machine with an additional AML description of human-system interaction.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) emerged as a technology that promises revolutionary gains through the automation of transactional processes, based on specific rules. Through the application of RPA, organizations aim to increase their operational efficiency. The objective of the project described in this article was to develop a automatized procedure to allow the implementation of RPA, in the enrolment process in existing training courses in the "Improve Our Work (IOW)" department of Sonae Academy. After analyzing the current process through the value stream design tool, waste was identified in this process, namely, too much time in the function of data processing inherent to the training enrolment registrations. Then, improvement proposalswere suggested and, subsequently, implemented, which allowed the reduction of time spent by the coworker allocated to this function, in approximately 95%. This value revealed the impact that the implementation of RPA has on the digital processes of organizations.

The effects of noise from future railway schemes are assessed using validated prediction methods that rely on multiple input parameters and assumptions. Generally, single values representing reasonable worst-case assumptions are selected for each input parameter. Variation in factors such as local meteorological conditions, receiver location and source characteristics means that there is uncertainty in the model inputs that, when propagated through the model, result in uncertainty in the model predictions. This paper presents an analysis to characterise and quantify the uncertainty of high-speed railway noise predictions via Monte Carlo simulation and global sensitivity analysis. The HS2 airborne noise prediction method is used as the basis of the study, along with elements of the CONCAWE method to take meteorological effects into account. Forty-eight generic scenarios representing different combinations of meteorological conditions, time of day, screening and receiver distances have been analysed for the L-Aeq and L-Amax metrics. Output distributions representing the prediction uncertainty have been calculated for each scenario and are presented as boxplots. The results of the global sensitivity indicate that meteorological effects have the largest contribution to the prediction uncertainty. The economic inflation that the whole world is currently experiencing and particularly Europe, in addition to globalization and the versatility of customer demand, encourage the companies to find innovative solutions to be more competitive. Indeed, for this competitiveness, industry 4.0 concepts have been successfully implemented in large companies supply chains as a tool to increase the company global performance. These concepts of digital transformation require to be adapted to SMEs expectations. The integration of sustainability aspects contributes to accelerate the concepts integration in SMEs by providing evolutive solutions appropriated to the SME singularity. This paper focuses on the design and development of an intelligent decision aided tool for well managing the sustainable digital transformation of SMEs. In this paper, the concepts and tools of the literature review, based on the supply chain 4.0 context and sustainability, industry 4.0, artificial intelligence and decision aided tools, have been briefly presented. Then, the paper next sections focus on the general approach and the decision intelligent system that are elaborated. An example is shown to validate these concepts and tools.

Micro-SMEs have a pivotal role in manufacturing yet face unique challenges in embracing digitization and digitalization which hold a promise of enhancing productivity, efficiency, and quality. This paper introduces Digifacturing, a term coined to encapsulate manufacturing through the strategic integration of digitization and digitalization tailored for micro-SMEs keeping the human workforce in loop. A general framework designed to address the specific needs and constraints of these enterprises is developed which addresses critical challenges left unaddressed by frameworks in archival literature. In a practical demonstration, the framework is tested on a developed system in a lab environment mimicking micro-SME environments, thus illustrating the adaptability and versatility in a real-world manufacturing setting. The findings from this work contribute to the nuanced understanding of key challenges in micro-SME manufacturing environments and addresses unmet needs in the application of research frameworks for implementation of digital tools for specific manufacturing processes in micro-SME environments.

Wear poses a significant challenge in various industries, particularly in mineral industries that rely largely on crusher machines. Within this sector, crusher hammers are among the components most susceptible to severe wear due to repetitive impact and abrasion during crushing operations. In this study, a NiB-TiO2 composite coating is electrodeposited onto heat-treated P20 mold steel to enhance the wear resistance of these hammers. To better replicate the elements of the tribosystem at the laboratory scale, the investigated coating undergoes repetitive sliding with both hemisphere- and cone-shaped counterparts, made from barite rocks, using a reciprocating sliding wear test. The findings reveal that, despite being much softer than the coating surface, barite counterparts effectively induce wear on the Ni-B-TiO2 coating and experience material loss during the wear test. The influence of counterpart geometry on the wear behavior of the coating surface is notable, especially for longer sliding durations. Compared with the hemisphere-shaped counterpart, the cone-shaped counterpart results in greater wear on the coating surface, which progressively increases with sliding time. In contrast, the hemisphere-shaped counterpart reduces by half the wear of coating while allowing for nearly steady-state wear damage as sliding time increases.

The construction management literature has made significant strides in studying productivity in construction projects. However, it is challenging to examine the general characteristics of the growing body of literature relevant to this topic because of its diversity. The objectives of this paper are (1) to examine the trends and evolution of research on quantitative analysis of construction productivity;and (2) to suggest a roadmap for future research on quantifying productivity in construction projects. To achieve these objectives, this research performed a systematic literature review, resulting in identifying 84 substantively relevant articles. Subsequently, it conducted a bibliometric analysis to explore the general characteristics of the selected articles, such as conceptual and social structures, year of publications, citations, and journal specialty. This research contributes to the literature by providing useful information about research capacity and how the quantitative research on productivity in construction projects has progressed, in turn assisting construction management scholars and practitioners in shaping the future directions on this topic.

Setting labor standards is an important topic to operational and strategic planning which requires the time studies establishment. This paper applies the statistical method for the definition of a sample size in order to define a reliable cycle time for a real industrial process. For the case study it is considered a welding process performed by a single operator that does the load and unload of components in 4 different welding machines. In order to perform the time studies, it is necessary to collect continuously data in the production line by measuring the time taken for the operator to perform the task. In order to facilitate the measurements, the task is divided into small elements with visible start and end points, called Measurement Points, in which the measurement process is applied. Afterwards, the statistical method enables to determine the sample size of observations to calculate the reliable cycle time. For the welding process presented, it is stated that the sample size defined through the statistical method is 20. Thus, these time observations of the task are continuously collected in order to obtain a reliable cycle time for this welding process. This time study can be implemented in similar way in other industrial processes.

One promising technology for reducing emissions is the ultra-low NOx combustion systems, which have recently achieved a remarkable reduction in NOx emissions to as low as 7 ppm through lean combustion techniques. However, a significant challenge remains in simultaneously reducing both NOx and CO emissions due to the inverse relationship exhibited by these two pollutants. Therefore, there is a need for a solution that can determine the flame shape to reduce the emissions of NOx and CO in premixed flames. In this paper, a comparative study using numerical analysis and flame visualization was conducted to predict flame length and shape. Numerical analysis was performed to study the flame shape. In the experiments, the actual flame shape was obtained using the flame visualization technique, that was achieved by applying optical filter in specifically highlighting the CH wavelength band. As comparative results between simulation and experiments, the simulation flame lengths were 30 mm for residual fuel fractions of 1%. In contrast, the flame visualization showed a flame length of 14 mm. Therefore, there was about twice the length difference between the actual flame visualization and the simulation flame.

Hollow fibre membrane humidifiers are typically applied in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems to guarantee a sufficient level of humidification of the fuel cell membrane. This study investigates the effect of the fibre placement on the water distribution in hollow fibre membrane humidifiers using surrogate models derived from detailed CFD simulations. In the literature, it is demonstrated that CFD models and simulations can accurately predict the water transfer in membrane humidifiers. However, the extensive use of detailed CFD simulations is often restricted by the high amount of computational resources required for such studies. To overcome this limitation, we propose to use a U-Net, a special type of artificial neural network (ANN), that acts as a surrogate model to predict the water distribution in randomly packed hollow fibre bundles. Furthermore, a grid search is done to identify suitable hyperparameters for the U-Net. Our results indicate that a U-Net can accurately predict the water distribution in different hollow fibre humidifiers.
