The imperative shift towards sustainable production is driven by both societal demands and increasingly stringent legislative measures, exemplified by the 2030 Paris climate targets. Manufacturing companies are compelled to develop and implement robust sustainability concepts to ensure economic success, enhance public image, and maintain competitiveness. This paper addresses the need for an approach to identify and integrate sustainability aspects into operational production management, an area currently lacking comprehensive methodologies. The research aims to fill this gap by proposing a four-part categorization scheme developed based on a qualitative research approach and international standards, focusing on sustainability's ecological, economic, and social dimensions. Drawing from the triple bottom line perspective, the scheme encompasses sustainability aspects aligning with the Global Reporting Initiative standards. The proposed methodology provides manufacturing companies with a framework to simplify the complexity of sustainability aspects, facilitating their integration into operational production management. The developed methodology contributes to more sustainable production processes, enhancing long-term competitiveness. The methodology was prototypically applied to a company within the commercial vehicle sector to demonstrate practical applicability. Lastly, this research identifies areas for future exploration, offering proposals for research to advance sustainable production.

Reducing fuel consumption and Greenhouse gases GHG emissions involves improving the aerodynamic coefficients of means of transport. At the same time, guaranteeing the stability of a vehicle travelling at high speed seems to be a key priority for researchers. Reducing lift is essential to increase the down-force exerted on a car. The diffuser plays a serious role in aerodynamic efficiency and greatly improves stability and grip at high speeds. This study delves into the examination of how alterations in diffuser geometry impact the reduction of lift and subsequently drag. Initially, a prototype car model was meticulously crafted utilizing CATIA software, later imported into ANSYS Fluent for comprehensive numerical Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, crucial in evaluating its aerodynamic performance. Employing the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes method based on the k-epsilon turbulence model for system closure and a complex unstructured mesh design, the Navier-Stokes equations were solved. The resulting streamline distributions and pressure fields distinctly illustrate the efficacy of integrating a dual diffuser featuring three vanes set at a 15 degrees inclination angle. This modification notably enhances the vehicle's stability, concurrently reducing the lift coefficient CL by 32.6% and the drag coefficient CD by 3.4% when juxtaposed with the base vehicle lacking a diffuser.

Monitoring and identification of defects during additive manufacturing is mostly done by bespoke optical or acoustic measurement systems. These in-situ monitoring technologies are either intrusive or sensitive to noisy manufacturing environments. We propose a movement tracking-based in-situ monitoring system for additive manufacturing, which is non-intrusive, less sensitive to environmental factors, and easier to operate and maintain. It evaluates the hypothesis that extruder nozzle temperature can be predicted from printer head movement, since temperature and acceleration are correlated due to the printers control unit. Subsequently, this provides an indication of print quality as the extruder temperature plays a vital role. We collected data from experiments using the MakerBot Replicator to examine the hypothesis. Results show that a Random Forest algorithm is more accurate in predicting the temperature variation using head acceleration and time lag temperature data as input parameters, and outperforms a k-Nearest Neighbors and a Vector Autoregression algorithm.

Deploying collaborative robots in manufacturing presents diverse challenges. Rapid adaptability to the environment while ensuring user safety and engagement is paramount. Existing human-aware task sequencing solutions often lack explicit risk modeling and management. International standards emphasize severity, exposure, and avoidance as critical risk factors. To enhance intelligent risk awareness control, we propose integrating multiple risk factors into task sequencing models. This forms the basis for a cutting-edge planning framework-backed risk-aware task sequencing system. Our approach's evaluation across various scenarios showcases its efficacy and adaptability to diverse risk levels. Experimental results show a positive equilibrium between productivity and safety, achieving both high throughput and low operator risk.

Mass customization approach requires low-volume, high-mix production schemes, leading to the creation and industrial uptake of highly flexible and modular production lines capable of processing a wide range of products. Towards that end, flexibility of reconfiguration and responsiveness of production plants needs to be increased. Digital technologies can make a significant contribution in making production systems more flexible for modular production. Reconfigurability and interoperability between automated industrial systems and Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) can be achieved by implementing a Digital Twin based on Asset Administration Shell (AAS) and formal definitions found in the I4.0, IIoT and IDTA standards. The AAS modelling containing a machine-readable, semantically unambiguous self-description metamodels needs to be supported by a software infrastructure capable to orchestrate the different assets. This paper presents an implementation of AAS modelling based on the relation of the main production assets -Product, Process and Resources (PPR model)- allowing the dynamic creation of process chains and reconfigurations, as well as up-to-date virtual representation of the Product by deploying a Digital Thread able to trace and orchestrate the data generated along the product lifecycle.

An accurate prediction of bearing remaining useful life (RUL) has become increasingly important for equipment maintenance with the development of monitoring technology and deep learning (DL). Although Transformers are currently the most commonly used unique learning algorithms for sequential data, concerns about their computational efficiency and cost exist. In this regard, Compact Convolutional Transformers (CCT) have emerged as a promising alternative that employs sequence pooling and replaces patch embedding with convolutional embedding to enhance computational efficiency while maintaining high prediction accuracy with smaller model sizes. This study proposes an RUL prediction modeling approach that utilizes the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) to transform time-frequency domain features into images, subsequently fed into CCT to establish a highly accurate prediction model for the RUL of bearings. This study conducted experiments using the XJTU-SY rolling bearing dataset. The performance was evaluated in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) and maximum absolute error (MAE) by modifying the layer configuration and comparing with other state-of-the-art algorithms.

Industry 4.0 opens new business opportunities and allows companies to gain a competitive advantage by introducing digital technologies in their processes. However, the digitalization process can be critical and, if poorly executed, could lead to worse performance than at the beginning. It requires a great deal of analysis, but most importantly, it must be seen by all stakeholders to be successful and valuable to the firms. The following study explains how Lean Management practices can facilitate the success of Digitalization projects. Overall, Lean practices have been recognized as a fundamental driver for driving the process of digitalization. In particular, hard Lean practices facilitate the removal of waste from the process before the digitalization and a fair selection of the investments. On the other hand, soft practices such as the operators' involvement are critical for overcoming the barriers to digital transformation and achieving the overarching company's goal.

The current study involves a series of numerical simulations aimed at elucidating the heat transfer characteristics associated with the condensing flow of R290 (propane) within microchannels. Specifically, circular microchannels with various diameters were examined to understand the effects of hydraulic diameters on heat transfer coefficients. Different mass fluxes (200-1200 kg/m(2)s) and inlet vapor qualities (0.3-0.9) were considered for a comprehensive examination. To accurately solve the two-phase flow dynamics inherent in condensation, the Volume of Fluid (VOF) model was employed, coupled with the Lee model to account for phase change at the saturation temperature. It is worth noting that within considered cases in numerical simulations, surface tension forces assume importance relative to other forces, in contrast to conventional channels. The accuracy of the numerical predictions was assessed against existing experimental data in the literature, revealing an agreement between the present simulations and the experimental data in the literature. It is found that the heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing mass flux and inlet vapor quality.

Data-driven Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) system gathers and organizes data from different sources, integrating and analyzing the data using different tools, with the purpose to react on potential quality issues before they happen with adequate levels of data accuracy and precision. This paper discusses the role of humans in the data driven ZDM loop, considering the context of four manufacturing companies, from the EU H2020 project DAT4Zero which has also funded this study. These companies represent distinct manufacturing environments, each with specific industrial challenges and requirements, which were studied to map, analyze, and exemplify the potential role of humans in the data driven ZDM framework in real manufacturing environments.

Detecting occluded areas in a driving environment is crucial to preventing traffic accidents against hidden road agents coming out from such occluded areas. Our previous work proposed a novel detection method that can offer geometric information of the detected areas by utilizing camera and LiDAR sensor fusion. However, it had difficulty identifying individual areas formed by different objects without information about distinct objects. Thus, the objective of this study was to improve our previous methodology, and panoptic segmentation, which can distinguish between individual objects and offer semantic class labels of the object, was adopted to overcome the limitation. Evaluation results revealed that our proposed methodology could achieve satisfactory results in occlusion area detection and superior accuracy in estimating hidden road agent types in the detected areas.
