This paper investigates the practical application of polyetherketonketone (PEKK) material in creating mandibular implants using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology. Digitally replicated a gypsum mandibular model using a high-precision 3D scanner was performed first, ensuring detailed accuracy for the design model presented in the paper. By using Finite ElementAnalysis, there have been simulated various stress scenarios on the PEKK mandibular models, comparing theirmechanical responses to human bone properties. Key findings include the material's superior tensile strength and bending strength, highlighting its potential for mastication and related stresses. The manufacturing process of the mandibular implant was realizing using a Stratasys Fortus 450 mc printer by Antero 800NA material and SUP8000B for support. The results of mechanical tests are analyzed in relation to research performed on producing mandibular implants with properties similar to the bone, providing insights on the use of PEKK material for this type of medical applications.

Traction control (TC) plays a key role in improving vehicle safety, especially for driving scenarios involving extremely low levels of tyre-road friction. In this paper a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based TC strategy is formulated and its performance is compared against a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) solution for a simulated straight-line acceleration manoeuvre on icy road conditions. The paper explores the design and assessment of the proposed controllers using a vehicle model experimentally validated on ice. The simulation results show that the DRL solution outperforms the NMPC strategy by reducing the wheel slip ratio peaks and oscillations at the start of an acceleration manoeuvre. Additionally, it converges more quickly to the reference slip and is more computationally efficient.

Wave climate and wave energy in Hikkaduwa on the south-western coast of Sri Lanka were successfully simulated by using MIKE 21 Spectral Wave Model. To hindcast, the wave climate in the study area, directional global offshore wave data hindcast at 3000 m depth for the period of January 2010-June 2020 was transformed into the study area by using numerical simulation techniques. Thus, a representative nearshore wave climate was established at 15 m water depth in the study area on an annual and seasonal basis. Southwest monsoon was identified as the dominant season for wave characteristics. A higher percentage of waves approach from the 210 degrees-230 degrees N directional range during the southwest monsoon. Based on the identified dominant wave characteristics, configurations of the proposed redeveloped harbour at Hikkaduwa were conceptually recommended. The nearshore area of the study area was identified as a possible site for wave energy extraction.

Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the steady- state natural convection occurring around a sphere immersed in a rotating viscous incompressible fluid. A higher order compact scheme (HOCS) is employed to conduct the numerical investigation, enabling accurate capture of complex fluid flow phenomena. The obtained results are based on a low Reynolds number(Re) and varying Taylor number(Ta) values ranging from low to moderate. The contours of streamlines, and vorticity lines are presented to describe the fluid motion resulting from natural convection. A noteworthy observation is that a Taylor column develops in the upstream region and a cyclonic vortex in the downstream zone with the increase in rotation of the fluid. As a result the local Nusselt number behaves in non-monotonically in the upstream region with increase of the Taylor number. It is observable that vorticity contours form in multiple regions with increase of Taylor number.

Balancing a bicycle through steering is similar to balancing an inverted pendulum, with a travel-speed-dependent pivot point. This paper derives a speed-dependent balancing controller for a self-balancing bicycle. This controller is based on an identified gray box model. The identification procedure is formulated as a weighted least squares problem with the time-varying parameter of the model. Identification data was generated on a controlled bicycle robot. Excitation experiments were designed to account for the unstable nature of the problem. Based on this identified model, a gain-scheduled controller is derived for a speed-independent closed-loop performance for a speed range. The controller is further implemented on the bicycle and tested for a set of speeds. Tests performed on the bicycle illustrate the gain-scheduled controller's performance gain.

Estimation of the actual friction potential from measured vehicle states has been extensively explored for passenger cars, but lacks attention for motorcycles. Several aspects towards friction potential estimation for motorcycles are discussed in this study: (i) analysis of the characteristics of motorcycle tyres on different surfaces and conditions by using an instrumented motorcycle, (ii) analysis of the theoretical performance of an EKF-based friction potential estimation approach by means of simulation studies, and (iii) analysis of the feasibility of using a wetness sensor on the motorcycle to gain information on actual road conditions.

The factors that affect sound propagation and audibility of train horns were investigated. Sound levels from a static horn above a test track decayed by 6 dB per doubling of distance up to about 30 or 50 m. At greater distances the level decayed by approximately 12 dB per doubling of distance-significantly higher than would be expected from spherical spreading. The effective range of a horn was found to depend on its height-at 400 m, the sound level from a horn 2.5 m above the ground was about 10 dB higher than one at 0.5 m, despite levels at 25 m being the same. At two mainline sites, the mean attenuation rates beyond 90 m were around 9 and 11 dB per doubling of distance respectively. At the second site, horn sound levels were highly correlated with distance. At the first site, horn levels were poorly correlated, suggesting variability in propagation or source sound levels.

With the widespread use of steer-by-wire in automobiles, research is being conducted on high steering gear ratio systems that reduce the burden on the driver, which enables steering with high sensitivity. However, this decreases the resolution during steering and worsens operability, making steering operation more difficult. In addition, if the amount of steering operation and the magnitude of steering reaction torque are not appropriate for the driver, it may cause operation errors. In a highly sensitive steering system, a small change in steering reaction torque has a large potential to affect the driver. The driver's steering burden varies depending on conditions, so it is not always possible to reduce the steering burden. Therefore, we evaluated the driver's steering burden on different days and examined the effect of steering reaction force torque on the steering burden. The results confirmed that the deviation of the burden increases as the load increases.

The RESHeat (Renewable Energy System for Residential Building Heating and Electricity Production) system is a typical application of the utilisation of sun-tracked Photovoltaic Thermal (PVT) panels and underground heat storage units. This work introduces a MATLAB simulation model coupled with moisture and heat transfer processes. Validation of the proposed model from experimental measurements was conducted. The simulations were performed for a single year of RESHeat system operation for demo sites located in Cracow City. Results showed relative error between calculation and measurement varies from 0.258% to 5.829%, along with the same temperature trend. A Finite Volume Method is used to simulate coupled heat transfer in the ground.

Governments and the market have stimulated replacing fossil fuel vehicles with electric mobility. As a direct effect, the demand for Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) has risen significantly. This technology has several advantages compared with other storage systems, especially the high energy density, capacity, long lifetime, and cycles. On the other hand, LIB is still expensive and is suitable for vehicles when its remaining LIB lifetime is above 80%. After that, the batteries do not satisfy the demands. Since recycling is complex and takes a long time, LIB is used as second-life batteries (SLB) for stationary systems and low-speed vehicles. Although the SLB has low performance, they need smart mechanisms to fit the application, operate under safe conditions, and perform the maximum possible cycle time. Therefore, this work presents an intelligent Battery Management System (BMS) to prolong the discharge time (DT) of a mini-packing of four cells, one of which is used as a reserve. Two configurations were present to guarantee the longest discharge cycle time and avoid cell failures. The first version could improve the DT by 22%, while the second increased to 72%. Therefore, the proposed mechanism is suitable for prolonging the DT of LIB for SLB applications such as stationary solutions or low-speed vehicles.
