The article deals with the issue of surface cleanliness assessment by fluorescence using Recognoil detection equipment. The materials selected for the evaluation were low carbon steel QD-36, stainless steel AlSI430, aluminium alloy Al99,5%, copper Cu DHP, brass CuZn37. The evaluation of surface cleanliness by fluorescence method, allows to determine the size and distribution of contaminants of oily nature. The purpose of this paper is to determine the magnitude of fluorescence intensity in selected ma-terials. The output of the measurement is a fluorescencemap, which is influenced by several parameters - material type, gloss, roughness and surface treatment method. Concrete results of surface cleanliness studies have most often been in the thousands of units of fluorescence intensity, and will be discussed in more detail below for each material type.

While firms in different industries face increasing pressure from society and regulatory bodies to address sustainability challenges, critical questions remain unanswered regarding how supply chains should prioritise processes, allocate resources, and integrate with other supply chains to develop bio-packaging products. We explore those questions by testing a Serious Game (SG) with stakeholders of the bioplastics supply chain in the UK. We find that SG facilitates the configuration of the BSC bio-packaging supply chain (BSC) for compostable products by prioritising the implementation of downstream processes integrated with the biofuel and agriculture supply chain and closed-loop business models (i.e., integration of production, commercialisation, and end-of-life) supported by normative regulations, communication and education with the consumers and investments at the end-of-life. In addition, under crisis scenarios (i.e., extended pandemic, climate change, and economic crisis), attention must be given to solutions that address local needs, downstream processes, and cost-effective bio-packaging.

Static recrystallization takes place during the annealing of deformed metals, and the resulting fine or coarse, equiaxed or lath-like recrystallized grains together with various textures can have a significant effect on the material's performance. In this work, oriented growth and anisotropic dispersoid pinning effects on boundary migration are taken into account in a cellular automaton model to simulate the morphology evolution of recrystallized grain in aluminum alloy. Diverse grain morphology can be predicted when varying the settings of annealing condition, and the underlying physical mechanism is discussed based on the simulated results.

Hydrogeological parameter such as transmissivity plays a vital role in assessing the groundwater potential, estimating the impact of pumping, taking remediation and preventive measures on an aquifer. It is necessary to estimate the flow parameters accurately. Experimental techniques available to find out the aquifer parameters are expensive and time-consuming. Hence, mathematical modeling techniques were used extensively to estimate the aquifer parameters. In this study, a forward simulation model for groundwater flow is developed with meshless local radial point interpolation method and is coupled with two different optimization techniques (such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), grey wolf optimization (GWO)) to form the simulation-optimization (SO) model. The objective of the developed SO model is to minimize the error between the true value and predicted value of the unknown system parameter of transmissivity using the known state variable of observed groundwater head and control variables (such as pumping, recharge). The developed SO model is applied to estimate the aquifer parameters in a hypothetical problem. It is observed that PSO approach gives accurate estimation of aquifer parameters than GWO for the problem considered.

Accurately estimating Remaining Useful Life (RUL) in industrial systems is crucial for optimizing maintenance strategies and extending the lifespan of assets. Data-driven RUL models leverage machine learning (ML) algorithms to extract patterns from operational data, excelling in capturing complex relationships. Despite advancements in RUL prognosis models, the black-box nature of machine learning algorithms poses challenges for industrial users, hindering trust and adoption. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods offer promising solutions by making complex models transparent and interpretable. This paper focuses on applying XAI methods to enhance trust in machine learning models forRULprognosis. We emphasize a quantitative assessment of explanation mechanisms, including metrics such as consistency and robustness. Our study contributes to developing more trustworthy and reliable predictive maintenance strategies. We evaluate XAI methods explaining RUL models applied to a real-world scenario of industrial furnace data. Our findings aim to provide valuable insights for industrial practitioners, guiding them in selecting RUL prognosis techniques.

The tolerance model remains an open problem for research. Since real parts always have deviations from their nominal geometry due to many factors such as manufacturing inaccuracy, the designer must define and assign tolerances to limit deviations from the tolerance range. Since an ideal feature cannot express shape errors, most traditional assembly modeling methods and approaches do not consider shape defects, which can lead to an inadequate tolerancing decision. To effectively analyze the tolerancing of non-rigid assemblies, the influence coefficient method can then be used. The (MIC) method is simple and has proven advantages over the Direct Monte Carlo (DMC) method in terms of time cost. This paper aims to study the problem of non-ideal parts assembly by integrating the influence coefficient method (MIC) and using finite element analysis (FEA).

Distortion of machined parts is still a big issue not only in the aircraft parts industry but also in any machine industry. Compressive residual stress is favorable compared with tensile residual stress after machining for fatigue and stress corrosion properties. However, it is not easy to get compressive residual stress on the surface after machining. Cutting is the main machining process for various machine parts including aircraft parts. Therefore, in this research, we try to find out the appropriate cutting condition to obtain compressive residual stress after cutting. Especially cutting conditions of up-cut and down-cut methods are compared from the viewpoint of residual stress after the cutting. The residual stress was measured by X-ray diffraction method using the mu-X360 device of Pulstec Industrial Co., Ltd. The results confirm that up-cut tends to generate compressive residual stress. On the other hand, down-cut tends to generate tensile residual stress. The details including the effect of repetitive processing are also discussed.

Simulation technology is commonly used in the engineering of production systems. However, models are often created for specific applications and are not reused. This paper explores the potential reusability of simulation models from virtual commissioning, also known as X-in-the-Loop (XiLS) simulations. The paper identifies areas where simulation models can be utilized after the engineering process is complete. The aim of this work is to integrate XiLS models into Mixed Reality (MR) environments for use as industrial training platforms. This can be achieved through a co-simulation approach. This article presents a concept and an exemplary implementation of XiLS integration in an MR environment using industrial components. The challenges and opportunities of this approach are also highlighted. An outlook for further work on how the approach can be automated is given.

Environments for the simulation and testing of automation play an important role in developing new robots and machine architectures. This paper presents a design and automation environment to study the control trajectory for new Cable-Driven Parallel Robot (CDPR) architectures, for instance, CDPRs with an unusual number of cables or different motor locations in the robot frame. In order to test the environment capabilities, an architecture of a planar under-constrained CDPR was designed, simulated, and implemented using standard industrial hardware. Both the simulated model and industrial prototype were running the same trajectories to determine the time delay and the error position between them. The tests have demonstrated that the simulated model of the CDPR reproduces the trajectories of the equivalent industrial prototype with a maximum deviation of 0.35% under loading and different speed conditions, despite the time delays produced by the data transmission and the non-deterministic communication protocols used to connect the industrial automation controller with the simulated model. The results have shown that the environment is suitable for trajectory control and workspace analysis of new CDPR architectures under different dynamic conditions.

Achieving Innovation is a complex challenge, involving or depending on several factors or causes. It is recognised as being crucial to economic growth, creating new industries and tackling societal challenges. There are several tools to measure innovation management but assessing innovation rests a challenge, as current valuation tools still blend results and process indicators. This study is an exploratory and descriptive study of a quantitative nature. It was carried out, in March-April 2021, to companies in the North of Portugal. Data were collected through a questionnaire. The results seem to indicate the main areas affecting innovation culture from the employees' perspective, as well as the relevance of the leadership role in the paradigm shift.
