This work deals with a numerical investigation of the onset of inelastic instability in cruciform columns using the limit-point method. In this aim, a nonlinear buckling analysis was developed to determine the limit-point stress and the structure response during the post-buckling stage. Both total deformation and flow theories are used to describe the mechanical behavior. The numerical simulations were carried out considering cruciform columns with different material and geometric parameters. The obtained results were compared with experimental data from existing literature focused on the influence of the plasticity theory. The influences of the slenderness ratio and material parameters are discussed.

Automated Driving (AD) technologies are rapidly transforming road transportation, emphasizing the critical role of Human-Machine Interaction (HMI). In this regard, the paper examines the interaction between Level 4 Autonomous Vehicles (L4 AVs) and human drivers in take-over scenarios within Italian traffic environments. Employing the Dynamic Driving Simulator at Politecnico di Milano, the study presents two simulation environments: an urban roundabout and a Ligurian highway. The research aims to measure the driver response during take-over requests. Questionnaires are used to psychologically analyse the participants. Physiological signals, including ECG, EEG, and EDA, are acquired throughout the entire simulation.

Drilling is the most common operation in the manufacture of machined parts. The complexity of this process depends on the number of holes to be machined which can reach hundreds or even thousands for certain parts. Also, the geometrical distribution of holes may or may not be regular, on a single plane or on several. Therefore, optimizing tool paths in multi-hole drilling operations can reduce time, cost, and energy consumption. Hence, several optimization methods were used to solve this issue. The objective of this research is to prove the performance of the novel optimization concept Dhouib-Matrix (DM) to find the shortest drilling tool path and thus improve productivity. In this vein, DM and its derivatives such as ABC-DM-TSP1, DM3, and A-DM3 have been applied to several case studies of the regular rectangular and circular array of holes. To evaluate the performance of DM, a comparative study with several optimization algorithms commonly used in the literature is conducted in this article. To this end, data set from 13 case studies have been experimented to compare the three derivatives of DM and eleven well-known optimization methods, mainly genetic algorithm, ant colony optimization, artificial bee colony, etc. Computational results indicate that the derivatives of DM outperform all studied competing metaheuristics, and yielded in some cases improvements exceeding 100% in tool path length.

Effective management of the end-to-end inventory processes used in an automotive components retail organisation is vital to ensure just-in-time product order delivery and improve product sales. Therefore, there is a need to measure the performance of an inventory system used in this organisation towards ensuring continuous inventory process improvement. In light of this, this study developed an agent-based model that could be used to evaluate the performance of an inventory system used in an automotive components retail organisation. In order to achieve this, a system model of the current inventory system used in the organisation was developed using AnyLogic software and parametrized using historical inventory order and processing operating conditions data obtained from the organisation. The result of the inventory system performance revealed that the maximum order fill rate, maximum actual order processing time, maximum sales order processing time, and maximum inventory turnover ratio are 66%, 9.7 days, 13.6 days and 2.1 respectively. The stock checking and stock packaging processes are the bottlenecked operations contributing to late product order service delivery in the automotive components retail organisation.

The impinging droplets and runback water evaporation process triggered by anti-icing devices for in-flight icing protection are considered: a stream of supercooled small droplets impinges on a surface heated from below, to prevent ice accretion. The industry standard, for the simulation of in-flight icing, assumes continuous water film and neglects the effects of wettability properties of the surface. Here, to assess the anti-icing performance enhancement offered by modern super hydro-phobic or low-ice adhesion coatings, an alternative approach is described. The evolution of each single droplet impinging on the surface is traced following a Lagrangian approach. A set of phenomenological rules and models defines the coalescence process, the threshold radii for the transition from static to moving droplets and from moving droplets to rivulets, as well as the heat transfer within the single droplet. Heat and mass transfer balances control the phase change. The model is validated against literature experimental data, showing its ability to capture the qualitatively different ice topology accreted on surfaces of different wettability performances. Results confirm that super-hydrophobicity does not provide full passive icing protection.

Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) of an elevated low velocity ratio turbulent round jet in atmospheric crossflow is presented. Atmospheric inlet boundary condition is specified at inlet. A commercial CFD software SimFlow, which is based on the open source numerical framework OpenFOAM, is used to generate grid and numerically solve the governing equations. It was found that the flow field is characterized by simultaneous formation and strong interaction of two separate wake regions, leading to a very complex and highly unsteady vortical flow patterns which show unstable, transitional behavior. The results also show that the IDDES is fairly capable of identifying the near-field wake region unsteady flow characteristics and large scale coherent flow structures such as a horse-shoe vortex, shear layer vortices, trailing vortices, separation and recirculation zones, a counter-rotating vortex pair, hairpin (Omega-shape) vortices and the Kelvin-Helmholtz roll-ups, as described in the corresponding literature. Formation of the von Karman vortices and their shedding characteristics in time are also captured.

For companies to remain competitive in the current market, they need to find ways to reduce as much as possible their operational costs. To achieve this, one area that is often the focus of improvement is internal logistics. This paper is focused on the restructuring of the internal logistics process in a case study company that has plans for doubling its production levels within a year. To do so, a new production supermarket and a milk run routing plan will be designed with lean concepts in mind. What makes this research different from most existing literature is the use of carts as a way of storing parts in the supermarket, instead of the common shelves. The strategy developed is able to reduce the number of workers required and is estimated to bring up to 145 000 euros in profit, depending on the future kitting time, considering a production growth of 100%.

As an intermediary step to enable solving the facility layout problem with reinforcement learning (RL), this paper presents an algorithm to automatically derive a path network from a given factory layout. It is represented as a graph with additional measures like pathwidth, segment length and segment orientation annotated as edge properties. The information can be utilized in subsequent processing steps to allow programmatic evaluation of the quality of generated layouts to aid in reward calculation for reinforcement learning. This is necessary since the material flow as a widely used evaluation criterion for algorithms solving the layout problem is not expressing the factory design goals clearly enough for a RL agent to learn. Material flow is typically computed based on transport costs and transport distance, which is abstracted as Euclidean distance between centre points of workstations. Using the path network derived by the presented algorithm enables a calculation of transport distances closer to the true distances travelled in the factory, thus enabling a more accurate reward signal.

Offshore wind energy is considered as one of the fastest growing sustainable energy sources in the world. Offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are the most common technology used to harness wind power at sea for conversion to electrical energy. OWTs are often designed for a lifespan of 25 to 30 years, with a possible extension of up to 5 years. Most of the OWTs that were installed in the 1990s and early 2000s have reached, or are approaching, the end of their service lives. This has resulted in increasing concerns about how the large quantities of materials extracted from end-of-life OWTs can be best utilized. "Circular economy" is a new area of research that has recently attracted considerable interest from the offshore wind energy community. This paper aims to present an analysis of the technological, economic, environmental, regulatory, policymaking, cultural, and social challenges confronting the offshore wind energy industry with respect to end-of-life management, including reusing, retrofitting, recycling, remanufacturing, and repowering of OWTs, to support the transition toward circular economy. We then outline some of the business opportunities that Industry 4.0/5.0 and digital technologies can provide for building a more circular and sustainable wind power industry in the future.

Efficient cooling structures and coolant materials are essential factors in improving turbine efficiency and prolonging their service life. It is imperative to develop advanced cooling technologies that augment the durability of the hot components in gas turbines. This study primarily investigates the effects of two-phase flow (mist/steam) and the mist particle size on secondary flow distribution and heat transfer within a cooling channel. The simulation result indicates that secondary flows benefit from synergistic effects when mist is introduced into the cooling channels, leading to increased velocity magnitudes. Notably, smaller mist sizes are more effective in enhancing both the secondary flow and heat transfer performance due to their evaporation characteristics under the given heat flowconditions. Furthermore, when considering the Nu/Nu(0) factors, there's an improvement of 26.79% at mist/steam mass ratios of 10% with a mist size of 10 mu m. Hence, a mist size of 10 mu m emerges as the optimal condition for evaporation within the channel across various mist/steam mass ratios, suggesting that the peak heat transfer and cooling efficiency can be realized at this size.
