As sustainability requirements are growing, more and more companies are falsely claiming to supply sustainable products, thus creating an unfair playing field for companies that do comply. The Textile and Clothing (TC) industry is one of the least sustainable and transparent industries, often manufacturing products in low-cost countries with inadequate working conditions and environmental standards. The purpose of this study is to investigate how social sustainability assessments can be conducted, to increase the reliability of sustainability claims. The paper proposes a concept of a Social-Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) service that is based on site-specific primary data and is grounded in the international Social Accountability (SA) 8000 certification system, to increase the reliability of sustainability claims. United Nations recommends the SA8000 in their S-LCA guidelines. The S-LCA service is also enabled by Blockchain to secure that critical data remains unaltered. The concept and service are being developed through the Design Science methodology, combining: i) case studies in an EU project, to understand the practical problem, ii) a S-LCA literature study, and iii) action research, to iteratively apply the service to the cases and refine it with project contributors representing the entire TC value chain. The concept consists of a workflow diagram, preliminary user interface, data collection template, and an overview of critical data to be secured by Blockchain. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first research paper about a concept of a site-specific S-LCA service that is integrated with an international certification system and a Blockchain-enabled platform.

An acoustic waveguide with a source and receiver of oscillations with impedance damping on the wall of the waveguide and a viscoelastic gasket in the zone of fastening of the oscillation receiver is considered. The harmonic mode of oscillations in the waveguide is induced by generating oscillations of piezoceramic transducer, the electrodes of which are supplied with difference of potentials harmonic type. Waves from the acoustic part of the waveguide are registered by a piezoceramic receiver. The emitter and receiver were modeled by one-dimensional equations of the theory of electroelasticity and an axisymmetric problem was considered for an acoustic fluid. The presence of impedance boundary conditions on the side surface of the waveguide gives rise to a spectral problem in which one complex root was determined because the source and receiver operate on thickness vibration mode. The boundary conditions for the receiver are supplemented by the equation of current flow through the external circuit due to the choice of the complex conductivity of the external circuit. Numerical experiments have shown that taking damping into account on the side wall affects not only the resonant frequency but also the current on the receiver electrodes. The viscoelasticity of the damping gasket affects only the amplitude of the current but does not affect the frequency.

The investigation of the effect of the U-shaped cavity aspect ratio on the natural convection heat transfer of copper-alumina/pure water hybrid nanofluid is presented in the manuscript. Various aspect ratios of the enclosure are examined with fixed parameters to observe their effect on the overall thermal performance within the cavity. The dimensionless governing equations are formed, together with the thermophysical properties of hybrid nanofluid which are coupled and solved using the Galerkin weighted residuals finite element method bounded by the momentum and energy boundary conditions. A damped Newton-Raphson algorithm is employed as the convergence criterion for the non-linear governing equations. Numerical and experimental comparisons between the present numerical results and previously published findings are conducted to ensure the solution's validity. The results are presented to see the effect of various parameters such as nanoparticle volume fraction and its ratios, Rayleigh number, and enclosure aspect ratios, and the discussion on the results is extensively presented. The present investigation is novel in terms of one heating wall instead of three heating walls in the previously published papers, which is closer to modeling real-world situations, where a top-bottom heating and cooling solution is preferable. It is found that hybrid nanofluid produces a better thermal enhancement solution compared to pure water as high as 10%, and a smaller lid width will restrict the heat transfer rate. It is hoped the findings in this manuscript will benefit heat transfer management in industries such as laptop and smartphone manufacturing. In turn, more sustainable energy management can be achieved.

In the current competitive markets, the possibility to obtain relevant and accurate data and information can make the difference between achieving success or not. A company which has several maintenance technicians in the final stage of their career and plants spread through different countries, can benefit from a collaborative platform that aggregates the maintenance information and knowledge to support decision making. The more accurate the data, the more reliable will be the analyzes and better decisions can be made. This paper presents a study performed in a wood derivatives company which intends to see the knowledge of its most experienced maintenance technicians and all the information related to maintenance department being captured, retained, and disseminated by all elements of the maintenance teams from the different plants. To capture and disseminate the relevant information by all the plants, a collaborative platform and its information architecture were proposed. The platform aims to obtain accurate records for supporting failure diagnosis and maintenance interventions, as well as process the data to carry out benchmarking actions and defining improvement actions. This paper presents the test results of the collaborative platform prototype, developed to validate its specification and information architecture, and the benefits that the company can obtain through its implementation. These benefits are the reduction of the interventions duration, promoting internal Benchmarking actions and establishing priorities in problems solving to improve performance. The proposed novel platform provides helpful information for both technicians and decision-making agents, and considers future integration with holographic solutions.

The FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) or FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) method is one of the most widespread technologies among additive manufacturing. PLA (Polylactic acid) is the most commonly used thermoplastic material due to its low cost of printing, biodegradability and the possibility of use in various industries. The trend nowadays is to design and use composite materials with different types of reinforcements such as: carbon, aramid, glass and natural fibers. This paper focuses on the comparison of tensile test of PLA and carbon fiber reinforced PLA materials from the same manufacturer. The main parameters that affect the mechanical properties of 3D prints can include: nozzle temperature, heating pad temperature, raster angle, fill percentage, printing speed, number of wall perimeters and wall thickness. The dimensions and shape of the sample were designed to comply with STN EN ISO 527. 10 samples were printed from each material and printed on a Creality Ender 3 V2 Neo printer. As a result of the paper, the tensile test of the specimens thus created was carried out with subsequent comparison of the values obtained.

This article presents an experimental study of the mechanical properties of nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) when irradiated with gamma rays. NBR was irradiated with gamma rays at different absorbed radiation energy doses (0, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 kGy). Tensile experiments and hardness test analyses show an improvement in the elastic behavior of NBRs and a decrease in their plastic behavior with increasing absorbed radiation energy doses. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows the NBR surface layer to be porous and cracked as a result of gamma irradiation. The experimental study was completed by a numerical simulation with Abaqus software using hyperelastic models (Mooney Rivlin model, Ogden model, Yeoh model, Arruda-Boyce model and Neo-Hookean model). The simulation uses input data obtained from traction results. Curves of stress-strain for pristine and irradiated samples, obtained from numerical and experimental studies, were compared. Parameters of the hyperelastic deformation energy function are computed for each of the five models. So, the Ogden model was found to produce the most accurate curve, with a mean square error less than 0.5%. The Ogden model is therefore the most appropriate for simulating the mechanical behavior of irradiated nitrile-butadiene rubber. The results obtained provide a good basis for describing the performance of this material under gamma rays.

Seattle Sound Transit's Link Light Rail extension to Northgate runs under the University of Washington (UW) campus that is home to world-class research facilities with vibration-sensitive equipment. Sound Transit has installed 1150 m of 5 Hz floating slab track in each of the twin bore tunnels. The train vibration is required to meet stringent vibration limits for 24 buildings over the 2-100-Hz third octave bands. Prior to opening of the new extension for revenue service, detailed compliance verification tests were performed for worst-case operating scenarios. Based on these tests, the vibration limits were amended at four sensitive buildings for the 5-Hz third octave band frequency. This paper presents the results of the compliance tests, performance of the floating slabs, and the determination of allowed train speeds under the UW campus.

The subject of the work encompasses the utilization of waste materials derived from the fused deposition modeling printing (FDM) process. Materials subjected to preliminary processing and modification were transformed into pellets and, subsequently, reused filament production and injection manufactured research samples. Neat rFDM material was modified with carbon fibers (CF), talc, and glycidyl-functionalized polyolefin elastomer (POE-g-GMA). The manufactured samples were subjected to detailed analysis, including mechanical and thermomechanical testing and thermal and rheological analysis. The results indicate that the mechanical performance of the FDM-printed samples was mostly more favorable than the injection molding procedure, largely due to the orientation of the printed structure. The thermomechanical properties of both types of materials did not differ from each other, while the annealing procedure allowed the increase of thermal resistance by approximately 20 degrees C. Talc/CF and the impact modifier made it possible to produce filament from waste and obtain satisfactory results in performance tests, especially for modified samples, where a large part of the materials achieved strengths above 30 MPa and a modulus of over 3 GPa, which is the performance of many commercial types of filaments.

Advances in manufacturing technology made plastics comparatively inexpensive, light, mouldable and durable. The great success of plastics comes along with a strong negative environmental impact and their accumulation in landfills and leakage into the natural environment is now recognized as a global environmental crisis. The circular economy approach to plastics provides a feasible solution to the prevailing linear system and aims to raise the proportion of plastic that is reused or recycled back into the system. The transition towards a circular economy, cannot be achieved solely through changes within the waste-handling system but must be combined with changes in other parts of the value chain, including the design, the manufacturing, etc. Plastic manufacturing companies need support in the transition. Therefore, this study aims to provide knowledge to plastics companies to move from linear towards circular manufacturing processes. We conduct a systematic literature review examining current practices and research needs in circularity within the plastics industry. This study contributes to the literature by mapping circularity strategies in plastics, explaining innovative circular plastic materials, and highlighting current circular manufacturing technologies such as additive manufacturing and the chemical transformation of waste plastics into various value-added chemical feedstocks, which can replace petrochemicals. Additionally, circular pathways are illustrated to support practitioners in identifying their current position in the value chain and understanding pathways to increase circularity. One of the key conclusions is that circular plastic value chains are still deficient in the implementation of R-strategies (such as rethinking, reducing, reusing, etc.) besides recycling.

Remanufacturing, aimed at restoring end-of-life products to like-new condition, has become an essential value-recovery strategy to guarantee sustainable industrial development. Despite its innumerable social, economic and environmental associated benefits, the high uncertainty on the condition of end-of-life products represents a major barrier to the automation of disassembly tasks. Therefore, the effective adoption of remanufacturing in industries is limited these days. In this context, worldwide consolidation of the Internet of Things has led to the recent creation of massive data ecosystems, the potential of which is yet to be exploited in a remanufacturing domain. Data analytics and predictive planning built on top of the Digital Twin concept can significantly improve decision-making through the modelling of "what-if" scenarios leveraging real-time information collected and made available by Internet of Things network infrastructures. However, the remote monitoring of end-of-life products and the integration of information from multiple sources are not trivial tasks, which respectively deal with large-scale wireless network deployments and heterogeneous spatio-temporal patterns. To shed light on this matter, this work explores one of the recent advances of Digital Twin infrastructures towards remanufacturing, as well as open challenges and research directions in the field of data-driven decision-making. Second, relevant sources of information are discussed and reviewed, which are then classified into three hierarchical categories: (i) product-condition information, (ii) context information, and (iii) spatio-temporal features. Finally, a conceptual Digital Twin model leveraging multi-source information integration is proposed, which motivates a case study for data-driven decision-making in end-of-life product recovery considering context information.
