The content of the paper is the application of Industry 4.0 technologies throughout the entire product life cycle in the example of the automotive industry. Particular attention was paid to the necessity but also to the difficulties of integrating various phases of the product life cycle. A model for the integration of product life cycle phases using PLM IT systems and the product structure models created by them is presented. The paper consists of 6 sections. The first one presents the factors that enable, determine and limit the use of modern technologies in the automotive sector. The second section defines and explains the concepts of product life cycle and product life cycle management. Product life cycle management is a condition for the effective and efficient solution of many problems, especially those related to sustainable development. This requires the integration of activities carried out in various phases of the product life cycle. An example of an approach to solving this problem is discussed in section three. The content of the fourth section is a "map" of the applications of Industry 4.0 technologies against the background of the car life cycle. Section five discusses the possible impact of Industry 4.0 technologies on the future development of the automotive industry. Conclusions and summary are included in section six.

Fluidic flow in micro-channels is driven by capillary filling actuation mechanism. Therefore, surface hydrophobicity plays a significant role in controlling the fluidic flow. Surface hydrophobicity can be tuned by depositing hydrophobic material onto the surface, or by creating surface micro-/nano-textures that follow Cassie-Baxter model (hydrophobic). To facilitate fluidic flow in a microchannel, it is critical to design and create superhydrophobic surfaces with high contact angle and low contact angle hysteresis, which require accurate control of two-scale micro-/ nanostructures. In this study, we propose to use laser interference to create deterministic micro- and or nano-level patterns on a metal mold surface. Femtosecond laser is chosen due to its high machining precision and minimum heat-affected zone. The surface structures are characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The surface wettability is analyzed by measuring surface water contact angles. Through hot embossing, the surface structures are replicated onto surfaces of polymer microfluidic channels. The proposed method is shown to be effective and easy to implement for microfluidic applications.

The dynamics of railway track plays a fundamental role on the generation of ground-borne vibrations and rolling noise, that are among the main sources of discomfort related to urban railway lines. For this reason, an accurate model to represent the dynamics of urban tracks is needed for the quantitative evaluation of the vibro-acoustical impact of new vehicles or railway infrastructures. Several analytical models for the dynamics of railway tracks exist, but they are not suitable to describe the dynamics of embedded rail track systems, usually adopted for tramways, since they neglect the dynamic coupling between vertical and lateral dynamics. An analytical model for embedded rail systems is proposed and the results are compared with experimental tests on a track section of the Milan tramway network. As a general comment, a good agreement between experimental and numerical results is observed. As far as the track receptance in vertical direction is concerned, differences are highlighted. In this regard non-linearities typical of elastomeric elements seems to affect the overall track dynamics.

Based on extensive research into temperature distribution within greenhouse environments, this paper presents an experimental investigation conducted on a glass soilless greenhouse prototype situated in Tunis Manouba, with a focus on its response to a typical spring day. This investigation takes into consideration various influential environmental factors, including air velocity, solar radiation, ambient temperature, and ambient relative humidity. To collect temperature data, precise measurements were taken both inside and outside the soilless greenhouse, utilizing specialized measuring instruments. The experimental results indicate that the greenhouse environment exerts a direct impact on temperature, with the interior consistently exhibiting higher temperatures compared to the external surroundings. Notably, this study highlights the significant disparities in average temperature between the interior and exterior of the greenhouse at different times of the day. Specifically, at 13 h, the temperature differential is most pronounced, with variations of approximately 8 degrees C. Conversely, at 10 h and 17 h, the temperature contrast becomes minimal and virtually identical across all measurement directions.

Sustainable manufacturing is a global imperative, requiring the convergence of materials, manufacturing processes, and engineering design. Manufacturing plays a vital role in the global economy;however, it contributes detrimentally to 20% of carbon emissions. Laser-based advanced manufacturing, primarily additive manufacturing (AM), holds promise for sustainable production despite challenges like cost-effectiveness, energy efficiency, and process stability. The challenge lies in effectively studying critical parameters and incorporating new materials, sensing technologies, advanced modeling, and prediction methods into the manufacturing process's waste-free and defect-free monitoring and optimization. This research focuses on developing research recommendations in three areas. First, (i) justifying the importance of developing Free and Open-Source Hardware (FOSH) laser-based AM infrastructure to facilitate research exploration, data-sharing, and open research. Second, (ii) exploring the concepts and theories towards integrated data-driven "perceptual intelligence," model-driven "computational intelligence," and integrated artificial intelligence methods to achieve cognitive capabilities with explainability and generalizability. Third, (iii) one case study on melt pool monitoring in metal-based AM showcases novel capabilities and limitations in real-time process monitoring using data-driven modeling. Regardless of the complexity and multidisciplinary nature of achieving cognitive intelligence in manufacturing processes, this endeavor will revolutionize advanced manufacturing process modeling and optimization, enabling more sustainable manufacturing processes.

In recent years, there has been dramatic concern about climate change with increased natural disasters. One of the critical factors of climate change is greenhouse gas emissions. The international community is growing more apprehensive about carbon emissions and their substantial environmental and climate influence. Apart from measuring product carbon footprints, financial analysis must include cost assessment to understand emission related expenses, like energy use in manufacturing. This study examines the case of Company A, a manufacturing company based in Taiwan that specializes in magnetic vises and magnetic work holding. This study aims to identify the amount of carbon emissions by analyzing major activities related to the manufacture of the product, developing a simulation model to represent the activities in detail, and conducting a cost analysis.

Ego Vehicle state estimation is integral to every autonomous driving software stack. Thereby, the estimation of the state and its components as for example the side slip angle, is a crucial component to track the vehicle maneuvers. In the absence of a direct sensor measuring side slip angle, most of the existing literature either use observers like Kalman Filters or non-modular factor graphs by modeling lateral dynamics. However, the modularity of such graphs, to integrate multiple asynchronous sensors that provide disentangled measurements, like LiDAR, GNSS, and IMU is still overlooked in the literature. In this work, we propose a novel factor graph-based architecture that builds upon the vehicle dynamics at its core to enable the fusion of multiple sensors asynchronously and enables to perform robust and accurate state estimation. We validate the proposed algorithm against two baselines, a model-based Extended Kalman Filter and a factor graph-based state estimator that uses the IMU pre-integration factor as a reference factor. The algorithms are validated in a custom dataset collected using an in-house vehicle.

Organizations can transform their businesses and create more value by adopting Industry 4.0 initiatives. During evaluating these projects, the decision-maker must assess significant uncertainties (risks) resulting from socio-technical, economic, and financial factors. One of the main objectives of this study was to identify the necessary building blocks to develop a framework for project implementation in high-risk scenarios, as in the case of Industry 4.0. A multi-criteria framework divided into three stages was proposed, integrating knowledge from Front-End-Innovation (FEI), Innovation Decision Process (IDP), Traditional Project Evaluation Methods, and Real Options Valuation (ROV). The first step is to identify an investment opportunity. The second step is the definition of a business model. The third step is the simulation of different implementation strategies to give managerial flexibility to decision-makers to decide the best strategy to mitigate risks. A real case study was used to test the framework. According to the results, managers can use this framework to create different project implementation scenarios and determine the best strategy to mitigate risks. However, we must still understand whether uncertainties behave discretely, dynamically, or both, the interactions between elements, and how to calculate them to improve our model.

Data-driven development of friction estimators for passenger vehicles is becoming popular. They rely mainly on training data to obtain an accurate estimate of the current road conditions. However, reference or training data for natural conditions containing available friction is sparse. This limits the development of data-driven approaches for friction estimation. The current paper presents progress in a project devoted to developing a method to use standard equipment for road monitoring to acquire reference data for friction estimation, relevant to specific tyres and operating conditions. Results show how a mapping between existing test equipment readings and the real experienced coefficient of friction of a car tyre can be made.

Turning, widely used to manufacture round parts, is often confronted with problems of vibration and chatter, which are also of concern in other machining processes. These phenomena impair tool durability, cause damage, alter part dimensions, deteriorate surface quality and generate unwanted noise. The fundamental dynamic model of turning incorporates a rotating workpiece subjected to longitudinal forces, whose dynamic interaction with cutting forces can trigger vibration and chatter under certain conditions, illustrating a complex dynamic problem. Vibration and chatter in the turning process are a typical example of moving load problems when the cutting tool moves along the rotating workpiece. In particular, the increased vibration sensitivity of the cutting tool is noticeable in operations where the length of the tool is critical. The aim of this paper is to carry out a spectral and experimental analysis of cutting tool vibrations during a turning operation, exploring their spectra recorded in the axial, radial and tangential directions using a unidirectional piezoelectric accelerometer. The results obtained highlight the distinct variations in temporal and frequency signals depending on the axes considered.
