Archaeological activities lead to ancient artifacts discoveries and vestiges. Some excavation operations are both difficult and repetitive: industry 4.0 concepts such as artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced robotics are exploited in the production manufacturing processes to increase performance and could help automate some stages of excavation. This paper deals with the integration of these concepts in the archaeological domain to address specific and tedious tasks. Indeed, archaeological sites are mostly difficult to access places such as open sites and caves, thus making excavation even more challenging, hence the need for robots. The Archaeological Cobotic Explorer (A.C.E.), presented in this paper is a robot that could work alongside humans during archeological surveys. It would be a precise and untiring workforce, capable of locating and retrieving artifacts underground. This project aims to describe the appropriate industry 4.0 concepts that could be exploited in this particular domain and to create a machine, (A.C.E.), built with commercially available materials or replaceable 3D-printed pieces, capable of automating specific stages of the excavation process. Advanced computer aided design and functional prototypes were built and are presented in this paper.

Vibration-induced noise in a ship structure can be caused due to propeller shaft vibration. This vibration can cause problems for the passengers on a cruise ship. This study aims to develop a nonlinear model for a propeller shaft vibration and understand the effectiveness of a nonlinear isolator in reducing the vibration amplitude. The vibration from the propeller shaft is transmitted to the deck plate. The coupled system of the propeller shaft and the deck plate is modelled as a two-degree-of-freedom system. The propeller produces high response due to synchronous whirl and instabilities such as oil whirl and dry whip. In order to incorporate the nonlinear modal interactions, the propeller shaft is modelled as a nonlinear duffing oscillator. Vibration from the propeller shaft is transmitted to the deck plate. The deck plate is modelled as a spring mass system having coincident frequency with the synchronous whirl frequency. The propeller shaft is coupled using a linear and nonlinear isolator to the deck plate. Vibration isolation devices are used to protect systems from unwanted vibration force or displacement, positioned between the source of the disturbance and the equipment that has to be protected. The study aims to understand the isolator's influence in controlling the vibration transmitted to the deck plate. Two types of isolators are considered in the study linear and nonlinear isolators. The passive nonlinear isolator is modelled as a cubic spring which induces a high static and low dynamic stiffness. The nonlinear coupled two-DOF system is solved using the harmonic balance method and compared using numerical continuation. The result from the study indicates that the nonlinear isolator effectively reduces the vibration on the deck plate.

Osseointegrated dental implants have been used in recent years to replace missing teeth. The primary objective of the proposed research is to investigate how functionally graded (FG) implants influence the process of bone remodeling and identify the FG composition that promotes bone adaptation. This study combines a bone remodeling algorithm with finite element analysis to model and assess the bone remodeling process. To achieve this, UMAT subroutines and custom defined materials were integrated into the Abaqus software. The analysis demonstrated the benefits of functionally graded material (FGM) implants when compared to conventional titanium implants. The study revealed that the gradual change in material composition can indeed impact the bone adaptation process. More precisely, the findings suggest that employing functionally graded implants with reduced metal content can improve the bone remodeling process.

Vehicle teleoperation holds great promise but faces challenges in complex scenarios, limited awareness, and network delays, impacting human operators' cognitive workload. Our prior work introduced the Successive Reference Pose Tracking (SRPT) approach, transmitting poses instead of steering commands, potentially mitigating delays. Yet, SRPT's robustness in the face of state estimation inaccuracies and the necessary sensors remain unclear. In this study, we assess SRPT under various challenging environmental conditions and measurement errors using a Simulink-based 14-DOF vehicle model. Results show SRPT's consistent performance, using estimated states, in worst-case scenarios. Our minimalist sensor setup - IMU, wheel speed encoder, and steer encoder - underscores SRPT's resilience without relying on GPS, vital for urban environments. This paper highlights SRPT's robust teleoperation, setting the stage for future real-world vehicle tests prone to measurement errors.

Sintering of 7-8 wt.% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8 YSZ) was investigated using hybrid microwave (HMW) processing at 2.45 GHz. The phases evolution and the microstructural changes behavior of 8 YSZ during HMW processing were investigated. Commercial 8 YSZ powder was investigated where the powder was pressed and molded into green body disk using uniaxial press before it was later sintered using HMW processing. 8 YSZ prepared green disks were heat-heated at 3 different temperatures: 1350 degrees C, 1400 degrees C and 1450 degrees C with a holding time of 2 h before they were allowed to cool down to room temperature. The HMW sintered disks were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystal size of HMW sintered samples was calculated to be around 46-49 nm using Scherrer equation. Furthermore, SEM micrographs of the HMW heat-treated samples had showed the typical sintered microstructure. HMW processing was successfully used to sinter 8 YSZ samples where the transformation of the stable tetragonal (t-ZrO2) phase into monoclinic (m-ZrO2) phase was suppressed which might be attributed to the huge number of oxygen vacancies formation during HMW processing. So, HMW was slowing down the typical martensite transformation and consequently decreasing the formation of the undesired microcracks from such transformation that usually lower the mechanical properties of YSZ. Furthermore, the cubic (c-ZrO2) phase was stabilized in the HMW sintered samples especially at higher heat-treatment temperatures due to that generated vacancies. Hybrid microwave processing is considered as a promising technique to sinter YSZ materials.

Cyber-physical systems and Industry-4.0 have made smart manufacturing possible. The multi-national companies were able to quickly adapt and cope with changing times, but the micro small-scale enterprises (m-SMEs) were at crossroads to adopt new technology due to extensive costs involved. This gap of no existing solutions for micro-SMEs is the result of literature survey for this work. Then the COVID-19 pandemic made it extremely difficult for micro-SMEs to survive. This paper implements a smart manufacturing solution for production facility at one such micro-SME. Pre-pandemic, their facility had enough production to satisfy the demand, but pandemic overwhelmed their production with rapid rise in demand. The main goal for this study is to make the micro-SME cope this unprecedented rise in demand. The production facility was upgraded, and smart features were incorporated based on cyber-physical production systems framework to predict demand and transform a manual manufacturing into smart manufacturing. With more than one product being produced, optimum production was achieved avoiding over/underproduction for different products given the limited storage capacity available with the micro-SMEs.

Virtual prototyping technology although already established in large fashion corporations and clothing manufacturers, is not yet widely adopted in SMEs with the lack of trust in evaluation of virtual fit being one of the main reasons. Artificial Intelligence and computer vision state-of-the-art algorithms have been leveraged to produce new tools in assisting the sample room of fashion clothing and its creative teams. Fashion creatives do not always have technical and manufacturing skills or garment construction knowledge. They are not the ones to evaluate fit or choose the right 2D pattern from an enormous digital database of a clothing manufacturer. Through the analysis of all these parameters, emerged the need for the creation of a new tool like the case of i-mannequin. This study presents not only the main core of this project which is to develop the first "Digital Pattern" with parametric structure model and geometric and semantic elements, but also the innovative platform's system architecture offering solutions to various technological problems and in various scientific fields.

Due to the serious impacts of global warming and pollution, coupled with the imminent depletion of fossil fuels, the world is seeking to replace conventional sources of energy with renewable alternatives. Among these alternatives, solar energy and wind energy, although intermittent, are promising options. To better harness the potential of these renewable sources, the development of energy storage systems, particularly latent heat storage, is crucial to ensure reliable operation and increase the energy supply in renewable energy systems. This article presents a numerical study of the solidification of phase change material (PCM) within a rectangular cavity, considering variations in the cavity width. The analyzed widths range from 10, 50, 100, 150, to 200 mm. The study uses a one-dimensional model formulated based on the principles of heat conduction and the enthalpy approach. The resulting system of equations is numerically treated using the finite volume approximation. To assess the accuracy of the computational model developed and implemented in Matlab, tests and comparative validation were conducted against the established results in the field of study. The proposed correlations for the solid-liquid interface position, which defines the boundary between the solid and liquid phases of the PCM during the solidification process, show a remarkable agreement with the results of the reference articles, with maximum deviations of 5.20% and 2.11%, respectively. The effects of the vertical plate temperature and cavity width on the interface position, interface velocity, stored energy, and time for complete solidification are presented and discussed.

Micro-incremental sheet forming (mu ISF) has advantages over existing micro-forming processes (due to its die-less nature of material deformation) and vast applications in sophisticated industries. In mu ISF, a flexible ultra-thin sheet (foil) is plastically deformed into a complex 3D geometrical shaped component. It is precisely governed by the user-defined toolpath of the forming tool on the surface of the foil. This study investigated the deformation behavior of 100-mu m-thick SS316L foils;the foils were deformed into small conical shapes with a tool-tip with a radius of 500 mu m. The mu ISF process set-up consisted of a rigid fixture to avoid any unwanted distortions during the forming. To test the formability of the foils at different working parameters, experimental and numerical examinations were conducted by varying the wall angle (alpha = 45 degrees, 60 degrees, 75 degrees) of the forming with three different step depths (Delta z = 10, 20, and 30 mu m). A finite element analysis of the process was carried out using ABAQUS (R) software;the results revealed that the forming angle in mu ISF had a direct relationship with the formability of the material. Higher values of the step depth assisted in increasing the formability of the SS316L foils. To examine the critical wall angle (alpha(cr)) and critical foil thickness (iota(cr)) at the fracture location, a higher range of alpha (70 degrees-74 degrees) was selected in order to establish a correlation with the depth of the forming.

Metal additive manufacturing process represents the most efficient means of producing intricate and compact components with nearly finished shapes. However, a significant drawback of this method is its substantial time and cost requirements. In contrast, wire arc additive manufacturing, commonly known as WAAM, has emerged as a promising alternative for producing large-scale structures due to its cost-effectiveness and reduced fabrication time. Over the past two decades, researchers have dedicated their efforts to investigating WAAM's application with aluminium and its alloys. Nevertheless, there has been limited exploration of the WAAM fabrication process for the stainless steels. This study aims to examine the impact of various process parameters on beads quality and geometry, for that we consider three key process parameters: welding speed (WS), wire feed rate (WFR), gas flow rate (GFR). To streamline our experimentation, we employ the multiple-level factorial design method, which helps reduce the number of trials required to identify optimal input variable ranges. Macro-level structural analysis is conducted on the sixteen weld bead samples to assess their geometric properties. Additionally, we employ ANOVA analysis to investigate the relationship between input process variables and output response variables. To gain a deeper insight into these associations, we employ a multiple regression approach. Using the results obtained, we employ the Teaching Learning-Based Optimization method to determine optimal process parameters and anticipate their corresponding results.
