In the event of a severe nuclear accident resulting in a core melt-down, the molten corium which is a mixture of the molten fuel, cladding, and structural elements, originating in the reactor core could penetrate through the reactor pressure vessel to interact with concrete structure underneath. This research paper presents the numerical modeling of molten corium concrete interaction (MCCI). The complex phenomena of molten corium concrete interaction and melting of concrete are simplified by considering multi-region with the change in phases taking place only within each predefined region with the assumption that corium is a homogenous mixture of molten nuclear fuel, cladding, thermo-hydraulic and structural element. This study presents the use of the OpenFoam a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulator where a new solver is developed to model the molten corium concrete interaction, its melting, solidification, and concrete ablation for the first time. Two sets of experimental data are used to validate the developed solver and demonstrate the thermal modeling and heat transfer capabilities of the developed solver for concrete ablation under severe conditions. We analyzed the effect of various boundary conditions and examined their impact on concrete ablation. We observed significant low concrete ablation, controlled temperature and velocity field, for water-cooled boundary conditions. Accordingly, the ablation of concrete decreased by 17% just by imposing water-cooled boundary conditions.

The present investigation presents the thermomagnetic convection in a hybrid nanofluid-filled wavy-walled porous thermal system. Both the sidewalls of the enclosure are cold and undulated with varying undulation numbers. The lower horizontal wall is undulated following a semi-circular-shaped protruded object and is heated isothermally. The upper wall is insulated. The cavity is packed with Cu-Al2O3/water-based hybrid nanoliquid and porous substances under the influence of the uniformly applied horizontal magnetizing field. This investigation significantly contributes to the existing research rendering an in-depth understanding of the thermo-flow-physics of a hybrid nanoliquid flow in an enclosure having surface undulations. The governing equations are solved using the Galerkin weighted finite element-based technique. The hydro-thermal performance of the thermal system is significantly affected by the various pertinent parameters such as Darcy-Rayleigh number (Ra-m), Darcy number (Da), Hartmann number (Ha), and undulation numbers (n). The wall undulations have a critical role for altering the thermal performance. Heatlines are used to analyze heat transport dynamics from the protruded heated surface to the heat sink. The protruded heater wall induces the formation of a hot upward plume in the nearest fluid layers. The flow divides into two parts forming a pair of circulations due to symmetrical cooling at the sidewalls. The way cooled walls with undulation numbers n = 4, corresponds to the superior thermal performance. The flow behaviors are significantly dampened by increasing Ha. This study contributes to the existing domain knowledge and provides insights for designing and optimizing similar thermal systems.

The present study is to investigate the reacting flow properties of supersonic flow in a strut-based scramjet combustor, with specific emphasis on the utilization of different injection strategies. In order to investigate the effects on the system, a three-dimensional DLR Scramjet combustor with multiple injections and varying injection angles on the triangular wedge is considered. Three numbers of injectors with parallel, upward and downward injections at angles of 15 degrees and 30 degrees are analyzed. The numerical analysis was conducted under the constant total pressure of 7.82 bar, 340 K of temperature and with the air speed as Mach 2 at the inlet. The findings indicate that the positioning of injector location and the shape has an influence on promoting flame stabilization. Additionally, the injection angles play a crucial part to reduce the intensity of the shockwave. The numerical analysis involves steady state RANS equation with the SST k-omega turbulence model. The obtained results were analyzed by examining the critical variables such as wall and centerline static pressure and density contours across the combustor length. The observed results demonstrate that angled injection exhibits more effective mixing compared to the parallel injection of all the struts, with the evidence of wall static pressure.

A two-step process of the mechanical surface treatments (MST) on Ti6Al-4 V using a deep cold rolling (DCR) followed by a metal shot peening (MSP) was studied to understand the complementary effect of MSP over DCR. DCR was used for the introduction of higher and deeper compressive residual stress on the Ti-6Al-4 V coupons while MSP was used for the further improvement of the compressive residual stress near the surface of the coupons. The study shows that the two-step process reduces the anisotropy of Ti-6Al-4 V in both surface roughness and compressive residual stress compared the standard single step DCR process. Furthermore, the two-step process improves the near-surface compressive residual stress owing to the secondary MSP process without compromising the depth of influence by the first DCR treatment.

Vancouver Sky Train noise has historically been highly variable. Corrugation in both curve and tangent track has been a maintenance challenge since the system opened, with changing rail surface condition between maintenance cycles resulting in up to 26 dBA variation in rolling noise emissions. This paper describes the outcomes from pilot studies and investigations to quantify the potential rolling noise reduction achievable by modifications to wheel-rail interface conditions, including harder rail steel;acoustic rail grinding and top of rail friction modifiers. The study demonstrates that reducing the cyclic variation in rolling noise is feasible. The objective is to optimize maintenance practices and wheel/rail interface conditions to keep train passby noise emissions within 5 dB of the best case (minimum) noise at all times.

The generation of dimensional tolerances holds a pivotal role in the design process, ensuring adherence to rigorous quality standards. This paper introduces an algorithm designed to create dimensional tolerance based on the inter-component relationships within assemblies. The algorithm is built on a feature-based assembly modeling approach, which associates each component with its mating features, dimensions, and tolerances. The relationships between components in an assembly are illustrated using a mating graph. Dimensional tolerances, including their associated dimensions, tolerances, and the requisite adjustments, are automatically generated by searching the mating graph for corresponding mating features. Towards the conclusion of this article, we present a validation example to highlight the reliability of our proposed approach.

For pure metals, typically a homogeneous distribution of material properties is assumed. This assumption reduces the complexity of the models significantly. For inhomogeneous materials like paperboard, however, this assumption is questionable. Experimental findings indicate that the structural inhomogeneity can lead to variations in mechanical properties, which in turn reduce the robustness of processes and require actions to control the product quality. In this work, we introduce an approach to modeling the local material structure in numerical simulations and investigate the material response to an uniaxial tensile test. The effect of various inhomogeneities, e.g., distribution of mass, density, and fiber orientation, on material properties was investigated, and it was found that fiber orientation has the greatest effect in most cases, while the effect of density is usually the least.

Plug & Produce is a modern automation concept in smart manufacturing for modular, quick, and easy reconfigurable production. The system's flexibility allows for the configuration of production with abstraction, meaning that the production resources participating in a specific production plan are only known in the online phase. The safety assurance process of such a system is complex and challenging. This work aims to assist the safety assurance when utilizing a highly flexible Plug & Produce concept that accepts instant logical and physical reconfiguration. In this work, we propose a concept for online hazard identification of Plug& Produce systems, the proposed concept, allows for the detection of hazards in the online phase and assists the safety assurance as it provides the hazard list of all possible executable alternatives of the abstract goals automatically. Further, it combines the safety-related information with the control logic allowing for safe planning of operations. The concept was validated with a manufacturing scenario that demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed concept.

Annealing is a heat treatment process commonly carried out in a continuous annealing furnace. While radiative heat transfer is the primary mode of heat transfer in annealing, convective heat transfer also makes a noteworthy contribution. In this numerical study, the effect of the circulation fan flow rate on the heating characteristics of the heating zone of a continuous glass bottle annealing furnace was studied. Heat transfer process is solved by modeling the convection inside the furnace and conduction in the solid glass in separate solvers and by coupling these solvers including radiation in an iterative scheme. The radiation heat transfer between the furnace walls and glass bottles is solved using an in-house developed graphic accelerated Monte Carlo ray tracing algorithm-based model. The glass bottle rows are included as porous zones in the furnace. The flow blockage due to the bottles and convective heat transfer between the bottles and furnace air are calculated using the average flowconditions inside each porous zone. Results clearly show the effect of the circulation fan volumetric flow rate on the shares of the radiative and convective heating mechanisms in the process. Increasing the volumetric flow rate enhances the convective heat transfer rate on the glass which results in lower furnace wall temperatures and it also leads to a considerably more uniform temperature distribution within the glass bottles at the zone outlet. The increased uniformity in the glass temperatures implies a reduction in the soaking zone lengthwhichwould reduce the investment and operational cost of the furnace.

The implementation of technical solutions requires a special approach to the formulation of safety. This is particularly important in companies whose operations rely on the use of technicalmeans, and solutions ensuring their interoperability, with limited participation of employees. These include companies that operate according to Industry 4.0 principles. This study focuses to the conditions underlying efficient day-to-day operation of technical equipment used in Industry 4.0 enterprises. It describes the interconnections between the implemented technical activities and the systemic guidelines for ensuring safety, and discusses the scope of requirements that must be taken into account to ensure the efficient functioning of an organization. The realization of tasks is presented as a process-based sequence of performed actions. However, in the implementation of technical solutions, one should take into account that regardless of the level of the use of machines, robots, and the automation of processes, humans must perform a certain scope of activities. This includes all work associated with the commissioning of technical equipment and, to varying degrees, its maintenance necessary to ensure its efficient operation. This study is a guidance for the concept of implementing actions and it requires a practical validation of the theses put forth.
