In the industrial sector, the focus in recent years has been on enhancing production and minimizing human error. Therefore, engineers have used Non-Destructive Testing to evaluate material by combining artificial intelligence technologies with NDT. One of the field applications of NDT is the detection of welding defects. The use of neural networks can greatly enhance the accuracy of detecting defects in industrial welding. A convolutional neural network with triple classification for welding defects has been suggested. In the first step, the original images are cut down to 150 x 150 pixels. Subsequently, the images are categorized into three groups: Training, Testing, and Validation. In the triple classification experiment (Crack, other types of Defects, No Defects), the CNN model had 6 layers and 9,667 parameters. The model accuracy approached 92% after 800 epochs. The F1 factors of crack, other types of defects, and no defects were 100%, 91%, and 90%, respectively. The article provides methods used by CNN in detecting welding defects and highlights the potential to improve defect detection accuracy.

The collection and processing of data in the context of Industry 4.0 and 5.0 are becoming crucial not only in supporting production management but increasingly in other processes, such as maintenance. The article presents a concept of a system supporting lubrication management. The authors emphasize that despite the introduction of automation elements in lubrication management, many operations related to machine lubrication are still performed manually, limiting the implementation of Industry 4.0 concepts in this area. To address this issue, the article introduces the concept of a supporting system based on the implementation of intelligent lubrication management. This system should, on one hand, utilize established Industry 4.0 solutions in the form of data analysis methods and process simulations, and on the other hand, enable a gradual and phased transition away from manual lubrication methods without losing the benefits of process automation and the implementation of intelligent solutions related to Data Analytics. The proposed system in the article uses tools such as RFID, AR, and IoT, allowing for a relatively simple, cost-effective, and direct involvement of maintenance personnel in both data collection and the utilization of modern technologies supporting lubrication management tasks.

Metal replacement is an effective approach for sustainable manufacturing of polymer products in various sectors with the key advantage of reducing the component weight. Technopolymers are a class of materials with increased properties, i.e., thermal and chemical stability as well as mechanical resistance, compared to traditional plastics, thus resulting in a more efficient alternative for metal parts. Nowadays, Additive Manufacturing is a game-changer production technology due to its high flexibility, geometrical accuracy, reduced time and costs, and minimal waste. Therefore, an attractive research topic for technopolymers is their application in Additive Manufacturing. Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is a semi-crystalline technopolymer, its thermal susceptibility during the cooling step of the process remains the dominant cause of dimensional warping and job failure. The nozzle and bed/chamber temperature difference should be optimised to reduce the thermal gradient. Previous researchers investigated the nozzle and bed temperature effects deeply. However, the chamber temperature influence on the dimensional accuracy and compression properties is still missing in the literature, particularly for samples printed with an infill lower than 100%. Therefore, this study aims to fill these gaps and deepen the knowledge about PEEK printing via Fused Filament Fabrication by evaluating the effects of chamber temperature and infill percentage over compression properties, printing accuracy and energy consumption. The specific compression properties highlighted that the highest values were reached for not fully dense samples. Furthermore, the heating chamber did not affect the dimensional accuracy and compressive properties as strongly to justify an energy consumption increment of 45%.

The concept of Industry 4.0 promises to transversally revolutionise industries. Simulation, as one of the main pillars of Industry 4.0, allows improvements in the organisational and production processes of companies. This research work develops a decision support tool based on system dynamics, that address the problem of car dealership sales forecast and evolution depending on the commercial strategies adopted. This decision support tool considers main variables that are expected to influence car sales in Portugal. To develop this tool several interviews were conducted with the people responsible for the commercial sector of different dealerships while considering existing literature on the subject. This allowed us to parameterize a system dynamics model with the most influential sales factors. The developed tool is expected to contribute to car dealerships to evaluate their commercial policies and define adjustments to these to improve profitability.

The heat produced in the nuclear fuel rod is dissipated by the coolant running through the channels in the fuel assembly. The flow between fuel assembly rods shows oscillating behaviour, having a noticeable effect on the cooling process. Additionally, the flow effects extend to the fuel assembly causing vibration in its structural system. The design and reliable operation of nuclear systems depend heavily on a comprehensive understanding of flow and temperature in a fuel assembly. In aiming to enhance the nuclear reactor's efficiency, safety and stability, a thorough understanding of fuel assembly coolant is crucial. Therefore, this study analyses the flow between bare rod bundle fuel assembly configuration utilizing advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approaches. In this regard, a hybrid (LES/RANS) turbulence modelling approach has been adopted to study a square lattice bare rod bundle configuration. By minimizing the overall computational cost, the best aspects of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) are employed. The obtained results are thoroughly compared with the available reference Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) database of a closely spaced bare rod bundle based on the well-known Hooper experiment. The hybrid methodology is evaluated through a qualitative comparison of the velocity field with the DNS database. Additionally, the prediction of the flow pulsation is analysed numerically. The findings in this work justify the usage of hybrid (RANS/LES) for these types of complex flow configurations and show its reliability.

This study presents a one-dimensional model to simulate structured thermocline thermal energy storage tanks. The structure consists of a solid filler material made of waste ceramic products and a series of channels through which the heat transfer fluid flows. The mathematical model is validated against a more advanced model as there are no experimental results for this type of unit. An investigation is carried out on the influence of the mass flowrate on the behaviour of the system, and several parameters such as accumulated energy, outlet temperature, discharge time, discharge power, temperature profiles along the bed, and the exergy of the system for various cases are studied. The results show that an increase in mass flow rate leads to a reduction in accumulated energy because the fluid has less residence time in the structure, reaching the cutoff temperature earlier. The influence of the mass flow rate on the outlet temperature and how it affects the temperature profiles are also examined, resulting in a smaller hot upper zone and a reduction in the exergy of the system for higher mass flow rates.

Metal forming processes for manufacture of hybrid components with complex geometry is one of the most promising trends in materials science. At the same time, such processes pose serious challenges regarding the interface properties between the different materials. Thus far, models are existing to describe cold welding of hybrid components and their plasticity during following deformation processes. However, these models have been developed and validated mainly for processes, where stress and strain states are recognized as simple (e.g., drawing, roll bonding). In this contribution, a flange upsetting process using hybrid billets made of AA-6060 and AA-7075 is subjected, where the deformation conditions significantly differ (non-monotonous and complex strain history). The main aim of this paper is to investigate such process with special emphasis on acting stress conditions in the interface with respect to delamination effects occurring during cold forging experiments. Also, the influence of an initial bond between the aluminum components, created by compound hot extrusion, is investigated both experimentally and numerically. In this context, three geometrical models of the hybrid billet (variation of diameter and wall thickness of the reinforcing component) were used. Analyses show that even if bonding in extrusion process is not ideal and depends on various influencing parameters, it makes subsequent cold forging process more stable and reliable regarding material flow compared to billets without initial bond.

Accurate data sets for material behavior model simulation are necessary for realistic numerical simulation. The true material parameter's identification is still a difficult task. When the optimization process is combined with a finite element simulation, this is typically constrained by the computational time. In this study, a procedure for the identification of material parameters based on a hybrid approach is described. This methodology suggests a strategy for decreasing the computing cost by substituting the FEM simulations by an artificial neural network (ANN) model in the optimization loop. For this reason, a parametric study of the FE simulation is carried out to generate an ANN training database. A high-predictive-performance ANN model is also created by optimizing the hyperparameters. To quantify the conditioning of the inverse problem and to justify the replacement of the FE model with an ANN model, an identifiability analysis based on an identifiability indicator (I-index) is also proposed. The classical characterization tensile test is used to apply this optimization approach. Finally, numerical and experimental stress-strain tensile curves are compared to evaluate the effectiveness of this methodology.

Nowadays, with the accelerating development of the hydrogen industry, the analysis of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) attracts wide attention. Based on the research process of the authors' team, the numerical models for PEMFC multi-physics analyses can be classified into three generations according to different thermal and liquid water assumptions. In this paper, the three generation numerical models are compared and analyzed under identical conditions. For the polarization curve, results suggest that under the studied condition, the simulating polarization curve using the third generation model fits best compared with the experimental one. Within the activation polarization control region, the three models result in nearly identical voltage. Within their respective ohmic polarization control regions, the three models result in similar voltage with a maximum relative deviation of 2.2%. Within the concentration polarization control regions, the first generation model will underestimate the concentration polarization while the second generation model will overestimate. For the liquid water, the third generation model can capture liquid saturation jump phenomenon well. The simulating liquid water saturation in the cathode catalyst layer using the second generation model is lower than that using the third generation model.

Laser peening without coating (LPwC) was invented in Japan in the 1990s. After confirming the effect of reducing the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of sensitized materials, LPwC has been applied to operating nuclear power reactors as a countermeasure against SCC of in-core components. Meanwhile, fiber-delivery technology for high-power laser pulses has been developed to expand the applicability of LPwC. In parallel, the effect of LPwC to improve fatigue properties has been investigated and then applied to the inside of the connecting pinholes at the root of nuclear steam turbine blades. In the last decade, various technological developments have been made to further expand the applications, such as dry LPwC, which does not use water as a confinement medium, and handheld LPwC, which uses a finger-sized microchip laser mounted directly on a robot. The author reviews the activities in LPwC over the past 30 years, focusing on the underlying physics, inventions, applications, and future developments.
