The maritime industry is an important sector of the world economy, facing many challenges. Lean tools can have a significant impact on reducing waste, time and costs, and increasing efficiency. This paper aims to identify and categorise the different lean practices implemented in the maritime industry and the main barriers and benefits of their implementation through a systematic literature review. This categorisation is intended to improve the understanding of lean practices and their benefits and to contribute to the decision making of stakeholders for their implementation. The analysis of the selected articles suggests that the implementation of these practices is effective in the context of the maritime industry, having as main benefits the increase of efficiency, and cost reduction. It was also possible to see that the vast majority of studies do not specify the lean tools used. The lack of knowledge, know-how, training of workers, and the lack of management involvement were identified as the main barriers to the implementation of these initiatives. However, further research is needed in this industry, namely in quantifying the impacts and identifying best practices for the implementation of these initiatives.

The need to lower manufacturing expenses and reduce energy usage is becoming more important as the world's population grows and finite resources become scarcer. In this context, greenhouses emerge as indispensable enclosed structures capable of providing an ideal climate for year-round agricultural production. This work presents an extensive investigation into the impact of crops on the greenhouse environment. To achieve this, we have implemented a comprehensive experimental setup, complemented by the development of multiple numerical models with ANSYS FLUENT 17.0. The outcomes derived from these numerical models confirm the direct influence that crops exert on indoor temperatures. Notably, below the crops, in the absence of crops, the temperature exhibits a significant elevation compared to scenarios where crops are present, with the temperature differential reaching approximately 5 K. This research emphasizes the crucial function of crops in regulating and optimizing greenhouse temperature conditions, a factor of utmost significance in the pursuit of sustainable and effective agricultural techniques.

This paper investigates the energy performance of a novel dew point evaporative cooler (DPEC) with a new shell and tube design heat and mass exchanger. The shell is assigned as a wet channel, and the tubes are assigned as dry channels. The results obtained from the numerical simulation have been validated against the experimental data and compared to the conventional DPEC, namely, flat-plate type DPEC, under a wide range of operational and geometrical conditions. The obtained results revealed that, when compared to the conventional flat-plate type, the energy efficiency has significantly improved (as high as 35%) due to a significant decrease in pressure drop, which eventually led to lower power consumption for the same amount of air flowrate alongside with the increase in heat and mass transfer potential. In addition, it was found that the new cooler recorded the best performance when the channel diameter was smallest (about 3.9 mm);meanwhile, the channel length of 1.3 m, air velocity of 1.7 m/s, and air ratio of 0.3 are found to be the optimum values which resulted in the best energy performance for the proposed cooler.

In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in autonomous driving technology. To improve the safety of autonomous driving comprehensively, accurate predictions for all traffic agents are crucial. Typically, the graph neural network is widely employed for the trajectory prediction. To enhance the prediction accuracy rate, this paper utilizes a finetuned vision-to-language large model to extract driving intentions. With the well-designed prompt and the supervision of the specific dataset, the LLM (large language model) can analyze the current traffic condition and give the corresponding driving intention. This paper also combines the result of the LLM and the output of the traditional prediction model, and the future trajectory is modified with the driving intention, which can improve the final prediction accuracy. Finally, in the decision-making part, both the driving intention from the LLM and the trajectory from the traditional prediction model are considered in the boundary-based drivable area, and a safe planning path is then generated. According to the validation in the public motion forecasting dataset, this method has greatly improved the accuracy of the prediction and the safety of route planning.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing a crucial role in enhancing predictive Maintenance for port handling equipment. By continuously collecting data, sophisticated algorithms, and machine learning capabilities, AI enables ports to accurately anticipate the maintenance needs of their equipment, thereby reducing unplanned downtime and costs. The significance of AI in this con-text lies in its ability to analyze vast amounts of data from sensors and monitoring systems of port equipment. Through this analysis, predictive models can identify trends, patterns, and early signs of failure, allowing port opera-tors to proactively plan maintenance. This not only improves the safety of port operations but also maximizes operational efficiency by avoiding unexpected disruptions. Furthermore, AI also extends the equipment's lifespan by optimizing its usage and identifying parts requiring maintenance or replacement. Ultimately, this results in significant cost reducing and better resource management. In this matter, we were interested in using predictive maintenance by handling the unexpected downtimes of port equipment. This is achieved by predicting potential failure of equipment. The goal behind predictive maintenance is mainly to enhance safety, decrease costs, and making port industry more automated and intelligent.

Effective stiffness of structural elements i.e., beams, columns, shear walls etc. plays a pivotal role in seismic evaluation of Reinforced Concrete (RC) shear wall buildings which are predominantly considered through use of stiffness modifiers in Indian design standard like various national design standards worldwide. The reduction in stiffness of the structural members is mainly due to crack formation in members due to shrinkage, creep, bond-slip of the reinforcement, etc. which further aggravates due to large inelastic deformation caused by seismic events. Stiffness modifiers for various structural members i.e., beams and columns have been recommended in revised Indian seismic standards (BIS in IS 1893 (Part 1)-2016 Indian standard criteria for earthquake resistant design of structures, Part 1: general provisions and buildings (fifth revision). New Delhi, Bureau of Indian Standards, 2016), however specific guidelines for the same is missing for RC shear walls. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the available effective stiffness recommendation by various national seismic design standards viz., ASCE (Seismic evaluation and retrofit of existing buildings (41-17), ASCE Standard, 2017), Eurocode (Design of structures for earthquake resistance-Part 1: general rules, seismic actions, and rules for buildings, 2005), New Zealand code [NZS in NZS 3101:2006 New Zealand standard concrete structures standard, 2006), Turkish standards (TS500 in TS 500-2000 Turkish standards requirements for design and construction of reinforced concrete structures, 2000) and assess the influence of effective stiffness on seismic evaluation of high-rise RC shear wall buildings. The results obtained showed a significant difference in peak strength with variation in stiffness modifiers of beam and column, whereas their peak strength is not significantly sensitive to effective stiffness of the shear wall due to higher stiffness of shear walls compared to other structural elements.

The industrial domain is characterized by many regression problems. Machine learning (ML) solutions to such problems that perform well and are robust against concept drift (CD) under real-world conditions are scarce. This paper proposes a novel model-agnostic method for ensembles, inspired by principles from evolutionary biology. It leverages these to preserve fit and significant concepts from the data stream and to constantly consider newly emergent, potentially short-lived concepts to challenge aforementioned ones. Introduced as dynamic member rotation and weight update algorithmics, this aids to robustly and explicitly adapt to various CD types as well as balance statistic modeling stability and plasticity. The method outperforms popularly employed state-of-the-art approaches on two real-world case studies by a considerable margin. With its capability of respecting practically feasible resource constraints, economizing ground truth consumption and enabling the straightforward use of tried-and-tested ML models, it is particularly valuable for productive use in data streams.

In recent years, additive manufacturing has been expanding rapidly in several sectors, including marine, aerospace and civil, offering broad design freedom and environmental/ecological advantages for the production of fully functional products. Particularly in the biomedical area, interesting manufacturing methods have recently been developed for the customisation of orthotic devices by automating the acquisition process and 3D printing. Today, in the development of complex geometries, it is necessary to meet certain design specifications, such as mechanical strength, surface finish, light weight, breathability and aesthetic appearance, which can potentially be met by manufacturing with 3D printers. This research deals with the development and implementation of organic bioplastic compounds based on polylactic acid (PLA) and organic by-products for additive manufacturing applications of customised orthotic parts. PLA, filled with reinforcements and additives, can be used to produce durable and functional parts for improved structural performance. By studying specific orthotic cases with CAD-CAE techniques, its potential mechanical properties will be evaluated and compared to highlight its performance comparable or even superior to that of classical PLA. The proposed methodology reduces production costs and environmental impact. Thanks to the presence of reinforcements and additives, the new organic bioplastic compounds are more biodegradable, while improving some of the functionality and comfort requirements of customised orthoses.

Monotonous sorting operations in the life sciences sector can lead to workflow issues and are prone to human error. Automation and digital twins can be used to help eliminate these issues for such manual sorting processes. To demonstrate this, a robotic cell digital twin and corresponding physical twin were designed, developed and fabricated for an automated test tube sorting application aimed at the life sciences sector. This system used a KUKA KR6 industrial robot and bespoke sorting carousel. A process digital twin was developed for the system using MATLAB Simulink and Kuka Sim software. A hybrid approach was used to calculate the cycle time to sort a batch of 20 test tubes, leveraging both digital and physical twins. The batch sorting cycle time was calculated to be approximately 316 s, corresponding to 320 test tubes per hour. It was demonstrated that such a system can speed up tedious sorting operations, and free up lab technicians to do more complex, rewarding tasks.

Laser shock peening process generally introduces compressive residual stresses on a component by targeting laser beam normal to the surface. However, geometrical complexity of components necessitates laser beam to be delivered at an angle other than normal. In such cases, the peening effect is not optimal. In this study, the effect of varying incident angles on residual stresses of Ti-6Al-4V components after laser shock peening is investigated. The results revealed a decrease in residual stress magnitude and depth with an increase in incident angle. The degree of reduction is especially obvious when the angle exceeds 20 degrees. Peening at a constant laser fluence produced similar levels of residual stress as in normal peening. However, at very large angles, peening effect was still slightly lower despite using same fluence, possibly due to other losses. It was found that increasing the laser fluence can compensate for the reduction in peening effect at large angles.
