Digitalization is taking place in the steel industry and novel virtual rolling models will be implemented into industrial systems. Virtual rolling models are mainly assembled of individual models for modeling the rolling process considering mechanical, thermal and metallurgical phenomena. Advanced virtual rolling models even predict mechanical properties based on modeled metallurgical state. These models for certain phenomena do not usually consider the constantly changing process parameters which affect the temperature of rolled strip in the industrial process. In the hot rolling industry, temperature development is of particular importance. To calculate temperature development accurately throughout the rolling process, multiple thermal boundary conditions must be considered. In this investigation, we used the FE-model to study how parameters of rolling pass, work roll coolers and full length transfer strip affect warming of a work roll surface. These results were utilized in prediction of work roll surface temperature in contact between the work roll and the strip over full length strip rolling in virtual rolling model to model development of strip temperature in full scale industrial hot strip rolling process.

Resilient components are widely used in railway tracks. For time domain train-track interaction simulation, the components are usually considered as linear Kelvin-Voigt models. However, the dynamic properties of the resilient components are often dependent on frequency and static preload, and this requires alternative methods to be adopted. The current study aims at comparing four different rheological models for the viscoelastic behaviour of the resilient components: a linear Kelvin-Voigt model, a linear three-element parameter model, a linear five-element parameter model and a non-linear three element model. Except for the linear Kelvin-Voigt, the other three models are able to reproduce the dependence on frequency, and the nonlinear three-element model can also reproduce the dependence on static preload. The rheological models are used as the foundation of the rail in vertical direction to study the effect of the different options on train-track dynamic interaction. To that aim, their effects on track dynamics are first studied in frequency domain with unit-length track models comparing the dynamic characteristics of the proposed models. Then the investigation is extended to time domain train-track interaction simulation analysing the force transmitted to the ground. Remarkable differences of the results are observed in the frequency ranges associated with the wheelset-track coupled vibration and the resonance of the track.

The phenomenon of turbulent combustion in the range of high Reynolds numbers is complicated to model using standard averaging methods like RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes). In the presented research, an extensive comparative analysis of turbulence models used for modeling this type of phenomenon was carried out. The object of the study was a combustion chamber of a hybrid rocket engine with swirled oxidant injection and a divergent section at the end of the chamber to ensure better mixing of fuel and oxidant. As part of the study, a DDES (Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation) type simulation was performed, from which averaged flow fields were then created using the Favre averaging. The flow field thus created was compared in 2D RANS-type simulations using the most popular turbulence models in this type of analysis, such as k - omega, k - epsilon, hybrid models, and RSM (Reynolds stress equation model). Analyzing the results allows us to identify the limitations of simplified analyses and show which turbulence model is most effective for modeling turbulent combustion phenomena.

Ionizing radiation shielding is required to prevent or mitigate the radiological risks resulting therefrom. Low Z materials such as polyethylene are preferable for neutron shielding, while high Z materials such as lead are preferable for photons (gamma and x-rays). Concrete is a conventional shielding material that is used to shield against either photons or neutrons. Although concrete is cheap and can be easily formed, it is responsible for 8% of carbon dioxide emissions. If volcanic silica rocks take the role of concrete in radiation shielding, this will help reduce the level of carbon dioxide emission. Monte Carlo code Fluka was used to simulate the experiment setup and calculate the exposure rate on the other side of the shielding samples. The obtained results showed that the linear, mass attenuation, and absorption coefficients of volcanic silica are almost like those of concrete. These results reveal that volcanic silica rocks could be used similarly to concrete for the shield against X-rays diagnostic range up to 250 keV.

Reliable operation of production lines without unscheduled disruptions is of paramount importance for ensuring the proper operation of automated working cells involving robotic systems. This article addresses the issue of preventing disruptions to an automotive production line that can arise from incorrect placement of aluminum car parts by a human operator in a feeding container with 4 indexing pins for each part. The detection of the misplaced parts is critical for avoiding collisions between the containers and a high pressure washing machine and also to avoid collisions between the parts and a robotic arm that is feeding parts to a air leakage inspection machine. The proposed inspection system relies on a 3D sensor for scanning the parts inside a container and then estimates the 6 DoF pose of the container followed by an analysis of the overlap percentage between each part reference point cloud and the 3D sensor data. When the overlap percentage is below a given threshold, the part is considered as misplaced and the operator is alerted to fix the part placement in the container. The deployment of the inspection system on an automotive production line for 22 weeks has shown promising results by avoiding 18 hours of disruptions, since it detected 407 containers having misplaced parts in 4524 inspections, from which 12 were false negatives, while no false positives were reported, which allowed the elimination of disruptions to the production line at the cost of manual reinspection of 0.27% of false negative containers by the operator.

This paper proposes a novel vibration suppression control method, which suppresses the torsional resonance of the drive shaft caused by motor torque change in the general drivetrain structure of automobiles. For realizing the method in the simplest and most prospective way, the proposed method calculates the feedback torque from the difference between the motor speed and the tire speed multiplied by a proportional gain, with estimating the tire rotation speed by an observer. In addition, a backlash compensation method is developed to reduce noise and vibration in gear retightening in the backlash region. The method observes the fluctuation of the motor speed after the torque zero-crossing and determine the motor torque so that the motor rotation speed returns to the speed at the entrance of the backlash. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified by simulation and driving test on the experimental vehicle.

Ultrasonic guided wave-based (UGW) structural health monitoring (SHM) is a sophisticated and invaluable process that employs an array of sensors and measurement devices to meticulously assess the ongoing performance and condition of various structures. Over time, accumulated data can facilitate the structural diagnosis, enabling informed maintenance decisions, and supporting remanufacturing efforts. SHM can play a key role in regeneration by providing valuable information on the condition of structures and components. This encompasses its capacity to ascertain the feasibility of remanufacturing, guiding determinations regarding the salvaging of reusable parts as opposed to the replacement of those that no longer meet operational standards. Moreover, SHM excels in its ability to pinpoint damage within structures and components, meticulously monitor the performance of remanufactured components, and ensure their alignment with predefined performance criteria. In this work, a finite element (FE) model of UGW-based SHM system on a aluminum plate, in pristine, damaged and remanufactured conditions, is presented. Notably, the wealth of SHM data gathered throughout the remanufacturing process can be strategically leveraged to refine the design of components and structures in subsequent iterations, thereby perpetually advancing the overall quality and efficiency of remanufactured products.

This paper focuses on the geometrically nonlinear analysis of a composite mem-brane structure, termed FGP-MEE, comprising Functionally Graded Porous Ma-terial (FGPM) integrated with surface-bonded Magneto-Electro-Elastic (MEE) layers. The model utilized in this study uses the FSDT theory, which necessi-tates the incorporation of a shear correction component due to the consistent adoption of constant transverse shear. The Newton-Raphson approach is then utilized to form a discrete system of equilibrium equations that consider geomet-ric nonlinearity. In this examination, the assumption that the material character-istics of the porous FGM structures change progressively across the thickness of the shell is made, adhering to a power-law function and porosity distributions. To confirm the dependability and efficiency of this approach, we cross-reference our findings with those of pertinent studies. These numerical findings provide insights into how the power law index and porosity coefficients impact the non-linear behaviors of intelligent Functionally Graded Porous Material (FGPM) structures.

Cloud-based resource scheduling problem is a typical combination optimization problem, and the task allocation problem refers to how to use resources most efficiently for the completion of a limited set of tasks in a cloud manufacturing system (CMfg). Due to their dynamic nature, and real-time requirements, CMfg faces great challenges in optimizing resource scheduling problems. Since machine learning was developed, a variety of decision-making problems have been solved using Reinforcement Learning (RL). This review paper is aiming to discuss aspects of an RL-based algorithm for optimization of resource scheduling in CMfg through investigating the literature to date. To this end, first, multi-objective resource scheduling is defined and elaborated. Subsequently, the aspects of RL algorithms are presented through their fundamental elements to optimize the scheduling model. Finally, the findings of the review paper are discussed and some suggestions for potential future research to further consolidate this field have been enumerated.
