For autonomous driving in urban areas higher accuracy requirements for localization of surrounding traffic participants become apparent. The use of cost-efficient camera sensors shows potential for a performant depth estimation and can supplement perception systems to achieve redundancy. Current research focuses on improving the algorithms towards better performance whereas the application-oriented analysis of present estimation errors in relation to urban traffic scenarios is often neglected. Based on stereo and mono camera images, a benchmark analysis of rule- and deep learning-based depth estimation approaches is conducted in this work. The error-prone estimation results are then analyzed against braking distances of urban traffic scenarios simulated by a two-track model to analyze the criticality of different depth estimation approaches. The application-oriented evaluation shows that current approaches could already be used in real automated driving systems and enable the definition of requirements.

The population in urban areas has been increasing exponentially in recent years. Catering water demand to the increasing urban population through the existing water distribution networks (WDNs) is becoming difficult. It is costly to replace the entire existing WDNs with a new one in order to serve the expanded urban areas. The working life of pipelines and other hydraulic components is 60-120 years, which is much more than the design period of the WDNs which varies from 20 to 40 years. Therefore, reorganizing the existing WDNs is a more economical solution for the growing demands, especially in developing economies. Adding pumping plants and parallel pipelines to enhance the delivery capacity of the existing system to cater to the increased discharge and analyzing the corresponding head loss comes under the reorganization process of a WDN. It also deals with the inclusion of additional demand nodes, pipe links and additional input source points at predetermined locations (nodes) to augment the increased system demand. In this work, the substitution theorem from the electric circuit theory is used for calculating the optimal diameter of a pipe that is being used to connect the main and sub-networks to transfer certain additional demands. The main advantage of this method is that one can calculate the pipe diameter of the connecting pipe in a single step without the need for the traditionally used iterative procedure. In addition, the diameter obtained by the application of the substitution theorem ensures the transfer of maximum power from one network to another. The proposal is rigorously tested on a realistic WDN under various circumstances.

Remanufacturing has emerged as a pivotal practice in the pursuit of sustainable manufacturing but it is facing challenges, including decision complexity, ergonomic concerns, and assembly and disassembly plan efficiency. This paper introduces a framework for advancing remanufacturing processes emphasizing Industry 4.0 (I4.0) concepts with special focus on Virtual Reality (VR) as exemplified by three applications. The first one leverages an armband motion sensor for intuitive programming of a robot, demonstrating potential enhancements in programming robotic tasks involved. The second one introduces VR for automated ergonomic assessment in remanufacturing tasks involving the human, using standard protocols. The third one explores VR-based evaluation and guidance of collaborative assembly plans by human and robot.

The current work presents a statistical analysis based on data collected during approximately 1.5 years of regular operation by two vehicles equipped with an on-board noise monitoring system on the Stockholm metro. Data covers 379,776 passages through 143 curves with radii up to 1000 m. Binary logistic regression is used to investigate the importance of curve radius, vehicle speed, relative humidity, air temperature, rail grinding and vehicle individual on curve squeal. Curve squeal occurrence shows an inverse proportionality with respect to curve radius. This trend is particularly pronounced for curve radii below 600 m. The two vehicles accounted for in the study show differences in propensity to generate squeal. The influence of temperature and relative humidity, and their interaction, on curve squeal is described by an estimated response surface. Results show the occurrence of curve squeal to increase after rail grinding. No strong relationship between curve squeal occurrence and vehicle speed is identified.

In this paper, we address the chemotherapy outpatient scheduling problem with the aim of reducing the total patient waiting time. Since the problem is characterized by several sources of uncertainty, a stochastic approach is adopted. A simulation model based on discrete-time recursive equations, which includes all the steps of the oncology process, was developed. In particular, the simulation model emulates the therapy preparation and transportation process. Since the oncology and pharmacy can be located in different buildings, the therapies are collected in batches and delivered by a courier service. The simulation model is embedded in a stochastic metaheuristic algorithm to evaluate the candidate solution for the chemotherapy outpatient scheduling problem. A novel metaheuristic algorithm, namely Self-Adaptive Harmony Search (SAHS), is here proposed and its effectiveness is demonstrated through an experimental comparison with a well-known Harmony Search (HS) and Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) algorithms. Specifically, non-parametric tests revealed that the difference between the performance of SAHS and HS is not statistically significant. Then, SAHS is preferable since it avoids the time-consuming calibration phase.

The aim of this study is to examine issues related to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in nuclear power plants. The study will explore the relationship between materials and environmental variables which cause the onset and progression of SCC in different materials commonly used in piping systems and related infrastructure. SCC stands as a noteworthy concern within the nuclear power industry, resulting in expensive downtime and repair procedures, and carrying potentially severe safety implications. The findings of this study can provide insights into the mechanisms underlying SCC and inform the development of strategies for preventing and mitigating its effects on piping systems. By understanding the factors that contribute to SCC and how it can be mitigated, industries can develop strategies to prevent corrosion-related failures and ensure safe and reliable operation. The results of this study will contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve the reliability and safety of nuclear power plants and other industries that face similar corrosion-related challenges.

This paper advocates for Digital Twin (DT) technology as a pivotal solution to address the complexities of Complex Operations Environments (COEs). Recognizing the need for a thorough understanding of COEs and their DTs, a methodology is introduced to bridge existing gaps. Given the lack of a universal definition, the approach leverages the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to extract insights, facilitating the development of a comprehensive definition for COE and DT. The methodology integrates Ontology and Systems Modelling Language (SysML) to provide a semantic and conceptual model of COE and DT. Ontology enriches the semantic understanding, exploring existence and entity relationships, while SysML ensures clear and concise communication through standardized graphical representation. This paper aims to present a methodology to achieve a precise understanding of COEs and their corresponding DTs, providing a robust foundation for addressing operational complexities in dynamic environments.

Today, the gearless horizontal axis wind turbines are mainstream in wind energy industry. High demands of electric power leads to bigger systems and active cooling reduces the overall efficiency of the turbines. Passive cooling systems have been examined for the first time for a gearless wind energy generator with a power range of 3-12 MW. With the further developed heat conductors, it is possible to operate a wind generator in a larger power class with passive cooling components. This is accompanied by enormous cost savings due to the elimination of costs for active cooling elements such as the use of fans, pumps, and heat exchangers. An additional factor is the significant reduction in necessary maintenance due to the minimized incidence of corrosion and wear. Design of the cooling fins and an optimized position of the generator within the housing of the wind turbine has been objectives. Mandatory was that maximum temperature of the generator fins should stay under 155 degrees C, which could be reached with several designs for different heat exchanger geometries.

In order to study the effect of carbon contact strip vibration on the irregular wear, a simplified pantograph-catenary coupled model is established to analyze its vibration response. It is found that the vibration of pantograph and rigid catenary mainly occur at low frequency and has little effect on irregular wear, whereas irregular wear of the carbon contact strip is from its the third vertical bending mode to its third lateral bending mode, which aggravate the mechanical wear in the middle of the carbon contact strip and the mechanical-electrical wear on both sides.

This study concerns a numerical test of squeeze flow for bi-viscous fluids defined around a yield stress which makes it possible to represent the Newtonian and Bingham fluid in limiting cases using the lubrication approximation. Commercial fluid dynamics software, ANSYS Fluent 19.R3, was used to solve the squeeze flow as a function of Reynolds and Oldroyd numbers. For viscous Newtonian fluids, the majority of studies have either provided exact solutions for velocity and force or have conducted experimental investigations. For Bingham fluid, most numerical studies are focused on the "nondifferentiable" expression of the constitutive-equation using the finite difference method. In this study, the influence of Reynolds-number (inertia effect) on the radial velocity and pressure of a viscous Newtonian fluid is examined. However, the study focuses on the influence of the Oldroyd number on the radial velocity of Bingham materials as a limit case related to the biviscosity model and on the identification of sheared and unsheared zones (rigid zone) within the squeeze test between circular disks.
