Evacuation procedures in buildings during emergencies demand advanced systems capable of ensuring swift and safe evacuations amidst increasingly complex (e.g., factories) and densely populated (e.g., urban) environments. Integrating advanced simulation and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms into decision support systems (DSS) for evacuation processes has emerged as a promising approach to optimize and customize evacuation plans according to specific situational and people's needs. This paper analyses the role, main challenges, and opportunities of AI and simulation in building evacuation. In the context of DSS, AI enables dynamic adaptation of evacuation strategies in real-time, considering psychological and social factors in decision-making, whereas advanced simulation models facilitate the evaluation and refining of evacuation strategies by identifying critical points and optimal approaches. While challenges such as algorithm accuracy, managing large data volumes, and privacy concerns remain, this study shows how technological developments such as smart sensors, autonomous emergency vehicles, and communication technologies hold significant promise in supporting the integration of AI to enhance evacuation efficiency and inclusivity, thereby improving overall building safety.

Additive Manufacturing techniques enable the realization of complex and free-form geometries that are difficult to realize with traditional subtractive processes. These geometries can be useful in searching for a lightweight design of existing objects. One of the main tools to achieve lightweight parts is the use of lattice structures, where the bulk volume is replaced by a pattern of unit cells. This paper presents a method to lightweight a kart connecting rod using lattice structures, with the idea of realizing this connecting rod with the L-PBF technique. FEM analysis and the simulations of the Additive Manufacturing process are included in the design workflow.

The escalating threats of marine pollution and climate change underline the critical need for deploying water quality sensors in oceanic environments. Recent advancements in energy harvesting technologies have been pivotal in augmenting the life span and durability of these sensors. Notably, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) emerge as a promising solution due to their ability to convert mechanical energy into electricity. However, the performance of TENGs in marine settings is hampered by inherent challenges: their high internal resistance and low current generation significantly limit power output. This limitation is further exacerbated by the ocean's inherently chaotic energy landscape, characterized by low-frequency movements. Addressing these constraints is vital for optimizing TENGs' utility in robust, long-term ocean monitoring applications. This work introduces the design and prototype of a rolling mode TENG (MO-TENG) for harnessing ocean wave energy, utilizing multi-tunnel grating electrodes and the opposite-charge-enhancement effect. The proposed MO-TENG exhibits impressive output performance and durability. The techniques and strategies detailed in this research have unveiled fresh possibilities for the development and utilization of TENGs in marine IoT applications.

Requirements elicitation is a crucial phase in Requirements engineering, laying the foundation for the system design process. Gathering requirements entails employing structured methods to understand the specific requests of the stakeholders involved. Given the intricate multi-domain nature of mechatronic systems and the increasing customer expectations, establishing robust foundations during the requirements elicitation phase becomes imperative. Two widely adopted methods for requirements elicitation, namely the House of Quality (HoQ) and Black Box Analysis (BBA), are separately applied to a case study involving an automatic parking gate. The system is then designed using the RFLP (Requirements - Functional - Logical - Physical) approach for mechatronic systems design. An integrated proposal combining both methods is then presented and applied to the same case study. The aim is to address each method's limitations and improve the requirements elicitation process to generate a comprehensive list of requirements that considers customer needs and essential system functionalities. The subsequent re-application of the RFLP process highlighted the enhancements facilitated by the integrated application of both methods.

This study presents a pioneering design of a single-layer graphene nano-resonance band. A high-frequency nano-electromechanical resonator is nonlinearly modeled, facilitating precise tuning of the resonant frequency comb within the nano-resonant band by adjusting the back-gate voltage-a novel approach. Graphene nano-resonators are characterized by etching a strip cavity on a silicon substrate, transferring a single layer of graphene to create a double-ended fixed beam structure, and achieving coordinated driving through back-gate electrodes. The resonator's dynamic equation, based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, adjusts the resonant frequency by manipulating membrane tension through electrostatic forces generated by a backgate. Utilizing alternating current, high-frequency vibration is achieved, enabling the realization of 1:2 modal frequency matching. The study calculates the back-gate voltage threshold and frequency range of the frequency comb using Floquet theory, providing clarity on structural design requirements and external excitation conditions for the frequency comb. This research significantly advances our understanding of nano-resonant bands and contributes to broader applications, shaping the landscape of scientific exploration and technological innovation.

In orthopedic surgery, bone tissues aid in the reconstruction of damaged or missing bone and ligaments, allowing patients to achieve optimal motor function recovery. A musculoskeletal tissue bank collects and certifies donated tissue for transplantation. However, sometimes suitable bone tissue is unavailable or incompatible geometrically with the required implant. Custom-made, biocompatible artificial bone tissue development could mitigate such challenges. Scaffolds, either biological or synthetic, promote bone regeneration within the body. Despite research on their chemical compositions and mechanical properties, limited attention is given to their geometric design and personalized shape. This study presents a method for designing bone scaffold geometry using additive manufacturing in a biocompatible material. The aim is to create a scaffold with variable density, from denser cortical to less dense medullary zones. CT images determine bone tissue density, compared to the density imposed on the scaffold. Additionally, the printability of the PEEK, the chosen material, is investigated. CAD 3D modeling software generates an example of porous scaffolds in a lattice structure, customizable to specific case studies, that could facilitate osteointegration. Further research may address the structural analysis of these elements and compare the results with the characteristics of human bone tissue.

In the evolving landscape of driving training, the integration of technology has played a pivotal role in shaping educational methodologies and enhancing learning outcomes. Virtual training methods, which often rely on the use of monitors, have been the standard for decades. However, with the advent of augmented reality (AR), a new dimension of interactive and immersive training is emerging, promising to revolutionize the way driving skills are taught and acquired. This paper aims to explore and compare the effectiveness of virtual monitor-based training with the innovative use of augmented reality in driving simulations. The focus is on understanding how each method affects learning efficiency, user engagement, and the practical applicability of the skills acquired through these training modalities. Virtual monitor-based training systems are valued for their accessibility and cost-effectiveness, making them a prevalent choice in many training programs. On the other hand, augmented reality introduces a layer of interactive elements that overlay the real world or simulated environments, providing real-time feedback and enhancing situational awareness. This paper seeks to delineate the strengths and limitations of the AR-integrated driving training simulations. The goal is to provide insights into how virtual-based training can be optimized to enhance the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of driving education, ultimately contributing to better-prepare drivers in their driving performances.

Machine learning has proven to be an effective method for quantifying the costs of mechanical parts early in the design process. One of the most complex aspects remains the application of the costing method in real industrial contexts, such as made-to-order manufacturing. This paper introduces a novel cost modelling method based on machine learning for the early design phase. The training dataset is generated using an automatic and analytic 3D-based software tool for process planning, time, cost and resource estimation. Subsequently, the CRISP-DM (Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining) methodology is applied to preprocess the data. CRISP-DM is a data science process model that outlines the data mining lifecycle and offers flexibility for tailoring the model to specific project goals. The proposed approach has been effectively applied to develop resource prediction models for manufacturing sheet metals (i.e., cutting and bending) that can be used during early design. These resource prediction models serve as the foundation for cost calculations. The mean accuracy of the obtained cost models is lower than 10%, a value accepted by design engineers during preliminary design and feasibility studies.

Currently, there is considerable interest in the principles of locomotion driven by vibrations, particularly in the field of mobile robotics. Among the various types of robotic chasses, wheeled ones are the most commonly utilized. The primary objective of this research is to define the dynamic and force characteristics of a wheeled vibratory robot driven by an imbalanced rotor (centrifugal exciter) and equipped with overrunning clutches providing one-way rotation of the robot's wheels. The latter allows the robot to move in a single direction. The research methodology contains several main stages: developing the dynamic diagram of the robot's mechanical system and deducing the locomotion equations;modeling (simulation) of the robot's dynamic behavior in Mathematica software under specific operational conditions;creating the 3D design of the wheeled platform in SolidWorks software;and finally, constructing the laboratory prototype of the vibration-driven robot and carrying out the full-scale experimental investigations. The obtained outcomes illustrate the time dependencies of the platform's speed, displacement, and consumed power under specific operating conditions. The primary scientific contribution of this research is establishing the relationships between the parameters of the platform's mechanical system and its dynamic and force characteristics at specific operating conditions. The investigations can be valuable for designers and researchers who work on mobile vibration-driven robotic vehicles, capsule-type robots, pipeline cleaning systems, vessel inspection devices, and similar applications. Further research on the considered topic may be focused on optimizing the excitation conditions to maximize the average locomotion velocity and minimize the power consumption.

The agri-food sector is an area where the design component can be considered to play a minor role as a non-technological driver of innovation. Unlike sectors like graphic design and communication, intellectual property protection is limited in industrial design, hindering innovation. To address this gap, the presented proposal advocates for an educational initiative to cultivate interest in industrial design among engineering students, following the UNE 144001 IN standard. The proposed methodology, called Value Analysis Methodology in 2 phases (VAM-2P), simplifies value analysis to prompt quick idea generation without focusing on economic aspect. On a first step, the students identify user needs in relation with the object to be redesigned. After that, CAD/CAE tools are used to generate 3D models and evaluate solutions against technical constraints. A case study on eco-design for a harvesting trolley illustrates this approach, emphasizing the use of SolidWorks 3D CAD (R) software to assess environmental impacts. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) and Target 4.4 of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to increase the acquisition of relevant skills needed to promote entrepreneurship among young people and adults.
