Lattice structures are defined by the organised repetition of a unit cell. These complex designs are widely used in engineering due to their lightweight nature and tailored mechanical properties. This study presents a novel 1D numerical method for modelling the standard Body-Centered Cubic (BCC) unit cell, a commonly used lattice structure geometry due to its geometry simplicity. mechanical analyses were carried out using Ansys 2023 R2. A customised ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) routine was developed to assign specific area and inertia properties to each beam element, independent from the nominal value of the strut diameter. The equivalent engineering constants were evaluated through uniaxial compression and in-plane shear tests. A neural network optimisation technique was then employed to optimise the 1D model's parameters and improve its accuracy. The neural network was trained using high-fidelity 3D FEM results as the reference data, enabling the identification of the most suitable parametric values for various strut diameters. The proposed 1D method aims to address the computational complexity associated with traditional 3D FEM analyses while maintaining accurate predictions of the mechanical response. By representing the lattice struts as beam elements in the 1D model, the computational cost can be significantly reduced, making it more feasible to analyse large-scale lattice structures or perform extensive parametric studies involving different design configurations and loading scenarios. This formulation has been tested by comparing numerical results coming from standard 3D and 1D elements on a variable span 3-point bending test. The accuracy of results and time-saving demonstrate the validity of the proposed procedure.

The work aimed to study the patterns of cavitation-erosion destruction of steels and titanium alloys. Electrochemical measurements were carried out on an installation with a magnetostrictive vibrator using the technique of potentiostatic measurements. Polarization curves were recorded at a constant temperature of 296 K under static conditions and with the application of ultrasonic vibrations for steels and a group of titanium alloys. The research was carried out using sodium chloride solutions. Tests were also carried out in hard water to obtain comparative data. A new approach was proposed for assessing the cavitation-erosion resistance of various metals and alloys. It consists of analyzing polarization curves obtained under static conditions, applying ultrasonic vibrations, and comparing them with the results of corrosion tests. It was established that high corrosion resistance, in combination with the strength characteristics of titanium alloys, provides high cavitation resistance in sodium chloride solutions. During electrochemical studies, an increase in the speed of anodic processes under all modes of cavitation influence and a narrowing of the area of passivation of the studied materials were established. All the metals tested in NaCl solutions and hard water can be conditionally divided into three groups. For the manufacture of equipment parts prone to cavitationerosive wear in sodium chloride solutions, it is recommended to choose materials from the 3rd group and primarily titanium and its alloys.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common progressive degenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease, and occurs mainly in the population over 65 years of age. This disease, which is usually detected at an advanced stage, depends on a dysfunction of neuronal circuits comprising the motor cortical areas and the basal ganglia, resulting in movement abnormalities. This has a substantial impact on quality of life and requires various strategic treatments, including drug therapy, surgery and rehabilitation. This research work proposes a parametric multibody digital-twin model, developed in the Simulink-Simscape environment, capable of reproducing the posture and movements of PD patients. The model allows an accurate and non-invasive real-time or delayed assessment of patients' movements, with the aim of identifying the main signs of disease progression at an early stage in order to prevent possible related risk factors and delay disease progression. The proposed method therefore makes it possible to perform, even at a distance, an assessment of the progress and level of severity of the disease, as well as early screening, through the digital monitoring of the maneuvers and clinical tests of the MDS-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale.

The increasing demand for lightweight automotive frames is pushing toward adopting composite materials and automating the related manufacturing and assembly processes. Carbon Fiber Sheet Molding Compounds, CF-SMC, enable custom-shaped car body parts fabrication through a single-step compression molding process. Nevertheless, conventional manual stack-up impacts productivity since it is the operation required to enable the compression molding. Robotic manipulation of the pre-shaped uncured composite stacks can relax the continuity between these two phases. The handling process requires dedicated grippers to keep the deformable composite stacks within the shape deviations required to fit on the compression mold. To this aim, a two-stage integrated approach to design the robotic grippers is presented in this work. Bounded by the maximum allowed deformation to fit the mold, the first stage returns the grasping pattern, that is the optimal grasp point map. The second stage aims to identify the lightest stiffer frame for the gripper. A Computer-Aided Design platform is adopted to integrate the two phases of the method. A car body panel is the use case selected to implement the design steps described and demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

In recent years, manufacturing has been undergoing major changes in search of more flexible and intelligent solutions, powered by Industry 4.0. While automation is what drove previous progress in industry, not every process can be automated, therefore, there is still a need for humans to carry out more complex tasks. Thus, in order to increase productivity and efficiency, while maintaining flexibility, robots can assist operators in their tasks rather than replace them. This paper proposes techniques for achieving seamless Human - Robot Collaboration (HRC), with wearable robots equipped with cognitive abilities that make them aware of their environments and the tasks the operator is performing. The main focus is on semi-active exoskeletons with adjustable torque and how they can be made autonomous. Their awareness is powered by computer vision techniques, mainly using anRGB-Dcamera and can automatically adjust the level of assistance they provide to the operator based on what they perceive, rather than having the operator control them directly. Consequently, they do not only improve the workload of the operator, but this assistance is offered without requiring specific actions from the user. This solution mainly focuses on the shipbuilding industry and the various tasks the workers have to perform in which exoskeletons can aid them. Finally, a welding use case is presented demonstrating the various functionalities.

A three-stage, comprehensive yet lean methodology for optimizing CNC machining is presented by example of rough cutting a complex pocket in a steel part to minimize machining time. First, CAM software is used for toolpath planning according to experience. Second, Taguchi method determines the best values of toolpath parameters (depth of cut, overlap, cutting pattern and cutter diameter) and their relative importance on the pertinent criterion, in this case machining time. In the third stage, machining parameters, i.e. cutting speed, feed per tooth and depth of cut were optimized by a genetic algorithm. The objective function included machining time, while taking into consideration technological and quality constraints, i.e. power, surface roughness and dynamic stability. The approach is demonstrated through CAM-based simulation.

Towing tank tests are useful for evaluating the performance of hulls. One limitation of these tests is that large hulls cannot be tested at a 1:1 scale. However, although the tests are conducted on scaled models, the results can be scaled using ITTC (International Towing Tank Conference) procedures to provide a prediction of the full-scale model behaviour. Full-scale models, on the other hand, can be directly tested using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, which do not have size limitations. In the present study, an ACS (Air Cavity Ship) hull model was tested in a 1:6 scale in a towing tank with and without air injection, with the full-scale results being derived from these tests. A towing tank scale and a full-scale CFD model were created in Simcenter Star-CCM +. The study aims to evaluate the results of the CFD models in terms of hull resistance and to analyse the shape of the air trapped under the hull in both scales.

Stroke survivors often experience debilitating upper limb conditions, requiring therapy and rehabilitation exercises to regain limb function. However, frequent visits to medical centers for treatment sessions pose challenges. This paper presents GripDome, a prototype designed to measure grip strength in a userfriendly and highly tailorable manner, enabling strength recovery for patients in domestic environments without the need for medical assistance. GripDome consists of an elastic, inflatable silicone dome connected to a plastic base. Patients exert pressure inside the device by squeezing the dome with varying forces, which is measured using an external pressure transducer and a microcontroller. The prototype offers adjustable resistance levels, facilitating quantitative assessment of grip strength and personalized rehabilitation progress tracking.3D printing is employed for plastic components, enhancing affordability and customization. Experimental tests demonstrate GripDome's ability to distinguish forces of different intensities and repeatability of measurements. The prototype's pneumatic system allows dynamic adjustment of resistance levels, tailoring rehabilitation paths to individual needs.

Previous studies have noted that gas nitriding and physical vapor deposition coating (PVD) considerably affect the wear resistance, friction coefficient and microstructure of AISI 4140 steel. This work studies the impact of gas nitriding and coating treatment (physical vapor deposition) on the wear resistance, friction coefficient and microhardness of this steel. The microhardness of the nitrided and PVD-coated layer increased with increasing nitrogen concentration, reaching approximately 1750 HV0.05 at a processing temperature of 525 degrees C and an ammonia content of 35%. Optical microscopy was used to study the structural properties of the nitrided layers. Furthermore, the presence of nitrogen and the TiN coating had a significant influence on the scratch resistance for a single pass, with a critical load (LC1) of approximately (5 N). Multi-pass scratching tests were used to study the wear volume, degradation process and friction coefficient. Furthermore, the multi-pass scratch method was used to obtain valuable data on the mechanical behavior and damage of the layer following duplex treatment, by combining gas nitriding and coating (PVD).

Structural batteries (SBs) are multipurpose devices that can store energy while also supporting structural loads. The focus was on anticipating internal short circuits and their consequences caused by mechanical abuse while doing Multiphysics Simulations with the commercial solver LS-DYNA. The available numerical strategies are detailed, as are the results of experimental experiments. A typical abuse load scenario (executed using a hemi-spherical dart) on structural batteries is simulated, both with and without their incorporation in a composite laminate. The acquired findings are contrasted and analyzed, emphasizing the use of Multiphysics-based design tools in the creation of safer multifunctional structures.
