Electronic devices require efficient cooling to prevent overheating and ensure reliability. Pin-fins, commonly used in devices like computer processors and LED lighting, enhance heat transfer. Micro-pin-fin arrays in forced-flow heat exchangers are vital for intense cooling. Exploration of pin-fin shapes is needed to maximize heat transfer. Therefore, understanding flow patterns and coherent structures in pin-fin arrays is crucial. They offer insights into heat transfer mechanisms and ways to enhance thermal performance. Our research aims to compare flow patterns between cylindrical and hourglass-shaped pin-fins via URANS simulations using OpenFOAM CFD software. We conducted a numerical analysis of hydraulic resistance and flow patterns in both cylindrical and hourglass-shaped pin-fin arrays, utilizing Omega criteria and critical point theory. Our key findings indicate that using hourglass-shaped pin-fins in microchannel heat exchangers can reduce hydraulic resistance by 6% to 12%. Additionally, vortical structures exhibit similar patterns near the endwall region, where flow detachment leads to the formation of a horseshoe vortex. Furthermore, behind hourglass-shaped pins, colliding streams change direction more abruptly, resulting in heightened mixing, the creation of intricate vertical patterns, and an increased prevalence of smaller structures when compared to cylindrical pin-fins.

This paper deals with a study to construct a road friction characteristic database as the first step in building a system to estimate road friction characteristics ahead, which is one of the major issues in traffic safety. To achieve this goal, we proposed a new method that can continuously measure the peak mu in the mu-s characteristic and showed the measurement results on different road surfaces. Based on these results, in this paper we measure the friction characteristics of snow and ice surfaces at a well-maintained test site and present the continuous mu-s characteristics on the surfaces and the peak mu regions on each surface. Furthermore, measurements are also performed on ordinary roads under snowy conditions, and a comparison with the results from the proving ground, it is shown that we need to examine the dynamics of the mu-s characteristics.

In hydrodynamic studies, there are very abrupt changes in physical variables both spatially and temporally in a water column. For example, vertical velocity distribution, thermal and saline stratification, and so on. In this study, multiple mesh transformation techniques such as sigma (sigma) and z-star (z*) transformations are used to determine which is best for achieving efficient results when simulating. This study aims to figure out which method can improve the accuracy of the results without using an excessive number of layers and validating the current velocity and tidal range in the domain with the measured values. The selected domain for the study is the Kandla region in Gulf of Kachchh (GoK). The study area is a region with the highest potential of tidal energy and has the presence of estuaries and creeks that are characterized by higher velocities and tidal ranges. The study includes the comparison of computational time and the accuracy of the results while using different mesh transformation techniques. A statistical evaluation to study the accuracy of the mesh transformation techniques along with the computation stability and time are discussed in this paper.

Recently, sustainability has been tackled several times due to the impending climate change the earth is facing. Numerous techniques have been applied to reverse the direction companies were going into. In this paper, it is explained the importance that Lean Manufacturing tools and Industry 4.0 technologies can have on the sustainable side of a company. The aim of this work is to fill the scientific gap related to studies deepening the combination of these different paradigms, Industry 4.0-Lean-Green, which have been scarcely investigated together. Thus, a Systematic Literature Review has been performed to detect which were the key variables of these three fields and then, it was studied what their interaction was. This study is giving the opportunity to understand the main variables of Industry 4.0 and Lean manufacturing on which companies have to act in order to have an impact on green variables and their overall sustainability.

Offshore wind energy is considered as one of the fastest growing sustainable energy sources in the world. Offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are the most common technology used to harness wind power at sea for conversion to electrical energy. OWTs are often designed for a lifespan of 25 to 30 years, with a possible extension of up to 5 years. Most of the OWTs that were installed in the 1990s and early 2000s have reached, or are approaching, the end of their service lives. This has resulted in increasing concerns about how the large quantities of materials extracted from end-of-life OWTs can be best utilized. "Circular economy" is a new area of research that has recently attracted considerable interest from the offshore wind energy community. This paper aims to present an analysis of the technological, economic, environmental, regulatory, policymaking, cultural, and social challenges confronting the offshore wind energy industry with respect to end-of-life management, including reusing, retrofitting, recycling, remanufacturing, and repowering of OWTs, to support the transition toward circular economy. We then outline some of the business opportunities that Industry 4.0/5.0 and digital technologies can provide for building a more circular and sustainable wind power industry in the future.

In the paper, a lateral control strategy is presented using Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) for automated vehicles. The main idea is that the physics information is incorporated into the training process, which leads to an improvement in the performance level of the control algorithm. Moreover, in the highly nonlinear range of the lateral dynamics, which is not properly covered by the training dataset, the stability of the vehicle is guaranteed. The results are compared to a conventional neural network trained to control the vehicle.

The global energy landscape in the twenty-first century is undergoing a significant shift with regard to the availability and use of energy resources. The energy transition is a response to the problems that the world's energy landscape is facing, chief among them being climate change. Other issues include fast-increasing demand, dwindling fossil fuel sources, skyrocketing energy prices, and hazards related to supply security. Nuclear energy is a vital source of energy that contributes significantly to the global electrical mix, particularly in developed nations. Nuclear power has a number of benefits, one of which is that it produces fewer carbon emissions than fossil fuels. This paper investigates the potential of nuclear power in the energy transition, taking into account the technology's phase-out trend that some developed countries have experienced over the past few decades, as well as the increased attention it has recently received as a low-carbon energy solution to combat climate change. Along with this, it looks at the role that nuclear power has in the energy transition using multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), which is based on the opinions of experts in both industrialized and developing nations.

Autonomous driving and electrification make over-actuation technologies more feasible and advantageous. Integrating autonomous driving with over-actuation allows for the effective use of their respective strengths, e.g., for studying energy and time optimal control. To model AVs, several vehicle coordinate systems have been used, e.g., Cartesian, Frenet and spatial coordinates. The present study aims to achieve energy and time optimal control of autonomous vehicles by using Frenet frame modelling and over-actuation. This study enhances the existing Frenet-based modeling by incorporating double-track dynamic vehicle models and torque vectoring. The problem is formulated in an optimal control framework, with carefully designed cost function terms and constraints. Two control strategies are examined, one for minimising travel time and the other for jointly optimising energy consumption and travel time. The results indicate that by considering both energy and time in the formulation, the energy consumption can be apparently reduced while the travel time is merely slightly increased.

Collaborations between Industry partners and University researchers are common to address Industry 4.0 research projects. Such collaboration facilitate access to expertise across domains. However, there is often a mismatch of expectations around language, processes and deliverables. One of the reasons is that academics treat these type of research projects as traditional Knowledge Seeking Research. Treating the research as Solution Seeking Research is a better approach, which ensures that the needs of all participants in the project are met. Solution Seeking Research can be implemented using a Design Science approach. Collaboration must be encouraged, which requires effort around communication, coordination and cooperation. Using a Framework for Evaluation ensures that all guidelines of Design Science are achieved. In this paper, we outline how we managed successful Industry 4.0 collaboration projects. We extend the framework for evaluation by recommending suitable research methods for ex-ante and expost evaluation. In doing so, we provide a model for future researchers to deliver collaborative research projects to the satisfaction of all partners involved.

The present paper provides a synthesis of selected experimental database from national and international (OECD/NEA) THAI projects focused on containment safety of LWRs. Since 2000, more than 200 experiments have been conducted in 60 m(3) THAI and 80 m(3) THAI+ (extension of THAI in 2015) covering various aspects of containment safety, like thermal-hydraulics, water hydrodynamics, hydrogen risk and fission products distribution behaviour. THAI experimental research also covers investigations related to performance behaviour of mitigation systems employed in lightwater reactor containments, e.g. BWR-suppression pool, passive autocatalytic recombiner, spray. The experimental database facilitating phenomenological insights as well as assessment and validation of safety analyses codes towards mitigation, and management of severe accidents is highlighted with emphases on the employed boundary conditions. Finally, re-orientation of THAI experimental research in the frame of future National THAI and OECD/NEA THEMIS follow-up projects is briefly discussed with emphasis on passive safety systems related investigations including those relevant for water cooled SMRs.
