Disassembly, a key step in remanufacturing, is almost always performed manually due to uncertainties associated with end-of-life products. In some cases, such as EV battery disassembly, the operator could be exposed to safety hazards. Teleoperation is an effective solution to this safety issue. This paper proposes a teleoperated disassembly system that integrates augmented reality (AR) and digital twin technology. The system establishes bidirectional human-in-the-loop communication between the physical system (the teleoperated robot) and the virtual model. Using AR, the system can provide real-time robot status information to the operator by superimposing a virtual robot on the physical robot and displaying relevant data either in the form of text or a line chart. Furthermore, the proposed approach allows operators to enter the control loop when anomalies are detected, enabling them to receive real-time feedback while remotely controlling the robot. Experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of the system in monitoring robot status during complex disassembly and offering a more intuitive approach for remotely controlling the robot, thereby improving the safety and efficiency of disassembly operations.

This paper explores risk assessment in collaborative tasks, by two different routes: a qualitative risk analysis method and a quantitative risk analysis method - to showcase the differences, advantages, and disadvantages between these methods. Another goal is represented by the formulation of guidelines on how to use these methods for companies that have implemented human-robot collaborative tasks. The first part of the research is represented by context analysis, where the current situation is described and the risk that will be evaluated is defined. The selected risk is: "Operator injury by the robot during operation - in collaborative tasks". The next step of the research is represented by defining and selecting the qualitative and the quantitative methods for the assessment of the defined risk, and the comparative analysis of these two methods. The selected methods are FTA and FMEA, and the analysis is performed based on the same potential failure mode. The third and fourth steps consist of the discussion based on the comparative analysis and the development of recommendations for the companies that activate in the automotive industry, about how to properly use these instruments for better and more adequate results. The two methods have advantages and disadvantages, but by combining or using them in parallel the companies can get a better overview of the risks and potential root causes involved and can better prioritize the risk mitigation actions.

Local scour near the spur dikes is hazardous to its stability. Obstruction provided by spur dike to the main flow leads to a three-dimensional vortical flow field around it. The interaction of complex vortical flow field with sediment causes scouring near spur dikes. Past research gives strong evidence regarding role of the vortex system (horseshoe and wake vortices) in sediment lifting and transporting around spur dikes. The present study uses turbulence anisotropy and length scales to characterize the vortices at different zones the thalweg, recirculation, horseshoe, deposition, and wake regions. Experiments were conducted with a straight spur dike under clear-water conditions. Turbulence anisotropy is discussed using the anisotropy invariant map (AIM) and invariant function (I.F). Data plots in AIM show that the anisotropy rises as we get closer to the bed, suggesting the creation of turbulent kinetic energy near the bed. In the thalweg region, shape of the eddies remains the same throughout the depth. The turbulent length scale (Kolmogorov length scale (eta)) is calculated at different zones. Kolmogorov length scales increase with water depth, indicating that the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rate is lower at the water surface.

Cutting tools vibrate with small motion over frequencies ranging from a few 100 Hz to a few kHz. Estimating small motion over these wide range of frequencies using newer vision-based modal analysis methods requires video to be recorded at high frame rates and resolutions. High frame rates are necessary for proper temporal resolution and high resolution is necessary for properly spatially resolving small motion. However, since most cameras trade resolution for speed, registering high-frequency small motion with video becomes nontrivial. To recover cutting tool modal parameters from high resolution but potentially temporally aliased video, this paper discusses the use of the compressed sensing technique. Compressed sensing enables non-uniform random sampling at sub-Nyquist rates and leverages sparse structures of signals to allow for exact recovery of signals that are not aliased. Though compressed sensing has significant potential, it requires video to be randomly sampled at the time of acquisition. Since existing camera hardware does not allow for this yet, this paper instead demonstrates modal parameter recovery from motion registered from video that is randomly downsampled at non-uniform rates from video that was originally properly and uniformly sampled. Recovered parameters from aliased video agree with those from video sampled properly.

Lane Keeping Assistance (LKA) is one of the most common Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) functions on the market, yet it is still not well accepted by drivers. Although LKA can reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents by correcting the vehicle heading in the event of an unintentional lane departure, poor usability often results in manual deactivation of the function. We provide considerations on how to specify LKA functions in general and propose admittance control as a solution to improve the state-of-the-art from the widely used concept of torque overlay, which is limited by a trade-off between automated and manual driving modes. Using the proposed LKA function, unintentional lane departure is prevented while maintaining comfortable reaction torque which allows the driver to easily steer the vehicle.

This research aims to optimize asset performance by integrating spare parts replacement, remanufactured parts, 3D printed parts, and repair, corrective, and preventive maintenance. The study reviews the current asset maintenance practices and proposes a framework for integrating various maintenance and spare parts strategies to achieve maximum asset performance. The proposed framework considers the asset's criticality, the availability of spare parts, and the effectiveness of each maintenance strategy in influencing the reliability and useful life of the spare parts utilized. The research also explores the potential of using 3D printing technology to produce spare parts and remanufacturing as a sustainable alternative to buying new parts. A case study is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework in optimizing asset performance. The results show that integrating the various maintenance strategies can save significant maintenance time and improve asset performance. The study concludes that a comprehensive approach to asset maintenance that considers all available maintenance and spare parts strategies is essential for achieving maximum asset performance, reducing downtime, and improving the overall efficiency of asset management.

High-rise buildings have become normalized for urban cities as it minimizes the available land used to house many tenants. The stability of the buildings is often subjected to extraneous loading from the wind and ground. When the excitation frequency matches one of the modes of the building, resonance occurs which causes large deformations. As a result, catastrophic damages and failures can occur when buildings are allowed to be excited for long periods. Damping mechanisms are widely adopted in industrial applications for their ability to minimize unwanted vibrations, increase a system's stability, and shift the natural frequency. A two-story building model was developed, and its natural frequencies were studied using finite element analysis techniques. Afterward, a vibration absorber was created to minimize the structural failure with a tuned mass damper. The effectiveness of the absorber was compared both analytically and computationally. A multi-modal vibration absorber can be employed for high-rise buildings to minimize the damage from natural effects such as earthquakes and strong winds.

Powerful tools for improving the layer thickness distribution in electroplating are available through simulation techniques for calculating the electric field. To get the best out of these simulation technologies, a good knowledge of the possibilities of simulation tools, the needed requirements as well as typical, proven workflows are important. This paper uses an industrial case study to cover, present and discuss the above-mentioned points as well as the used approach used and the achieved results. Both the individual results achieved and the improved understanding of the process noticeably improve the efficiency in electroplating.

The development of innovative Industry 4.0 technologies and widespread digitalization have enabled manufacturers to find innovative ways to optimize production operations. One way to assess the transformation of an enterprise is the ADMA method, which involves assessing the digital maturity of the factory. The audit carried out as part of the creation of the company's roadmap aims to determine its maturity in seven areas. The roadmap recommends technologies for each transformation area and the benefits that can be obtained from their use. Various Lean Manufacturing methods can be significant at each of these stages. The article assigns Lean Manufacturing methods to each transformation, which support the development of the company in their area. Based on a literature review 15 Lean Manufacturing methods were selected, such as: Hoshin Kanri, 5S, Single-minute exchange of dies (SMED), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Kaizen, Modern QFD, Standardization, Plan For Every Person, Training Within Industry (TWI), Value StreamMap (VSM)/MAKIGAMI, POKA-YOKE, System PULL, One-Piece Flow, Just-in-Time (JIT), Heijunka.

Heat pipes play a crucial role in industrial thermal management owing to their exceptional heat-carrying capacity, minimal thermal resistance and reliable performance. However, designing and optimizing heat pipes becomes intricate especially when dealing with multi-phase heat transfer encompassing complex phenomena like phase-change processes (i.e., evaporation, condensation and free surface flow). Grooved heat pipes, characterized by complex groove shapes, introduce an additional layer of complexity necessitating physically based mathematical models and skin friction correlations that may not always be readily available or may yield inferior results. To address these limitations, an innovative computational methodology is integrated into a commercial CFD program (Fluent R-(R)) using the Python R-(R) programming language. This approach allowed for comprehensive computation of the 3D fluid flow field and heat transfer phenomena within grooved heat pipes. Notably, the methodology incorporates data fitting procedures for boundary conditions leading to a substantial acceleration of the computation process and a reduction in solution times. This investigation represents a substantial advancement in addressing the challenges of multi-phase heat transfer phenomena while providing a compelling solution to the limitations of previous modeling methodologies for grooved heat pipes. Furthermore, the proposed methodology exhibits versatility, extending beyond its initial scope to encompass complex geometries like omega-shaped grooves and various physical scenarios involving phase-change phenomena and free-surface flow. Due to its comprehensive insights and adaptable framework, developed methodology serves as a valuable tool for analyzing heat pipes with multiple grooves addressing a significant gap in the literature.
