Industry 4.0 is directly related to the digital transformation of organizations. One of the main characteristics of this transformation is the ability to analyze and manage data to obtain relevant and previously unknown information from it. Specifically, in the context of operational risk management, an efficient analysis of the data that typically come from occurrence records, can support decision-making. This paper presents a new algorithm to identify dependencies between events in productive environments, such as equipment failures, defects, or safety and environmental incidents, supporting the decision-making process in the context of analyzing and managing operational risks. The algorithm was developed based on association rulemining algorithms, then tested with data from a Portuguese metalworking company, and finally validated. The test results show that the developed algorithm is capable of identifying dependencies, which have to be confirmed by specialized staff to conclude if they are causal relationships.

Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is a comprehensive and powerful strategy for processes improvement and products. There is a cornucopia of tools for its implementation and 37 among them were selected to carry out an evaluation based on three factors, namely: Frequency of use of the tool;Difficulty in implementing;Importance and impact of the tool in the implementation of LSS. An online survey was conducted with Portuguese consultants and it included questions on the profile, and the companies they worked, as well as the degree of impact of the tools used. Consultants were asked to choose ten tools, ranking them in order of importance. The frequencies with which each tool had been cited were counted. A procedure was then developed to identify the know-how of consultants to establish a ranking of LSS tools. It was created an ordering list of tools, which emphasized in: Honshin Kanri, VOC, VSM. The results presented are particularly relevant when is considered the importance of understanding the requirements for a successful implementation of Lean Six Sigma management system in the organizations.

A dataset containing over a year of vibration information was collected adjacent to the rail corridor in Sydney. Vibration from one train type (Tangara trains) travelling on the track nearest to the vibration monitor was observed to be 5 dB higher on average than the vibration produced by newer generation Waratah trains. This observation is only partially explained by the 10% difference in unsprung mass. This paper describes the outcomes of investigations to understand the root cause of the higher Tangara train vibration levels. It is evident that these trains experience a much higher incidence of wheel flats than newer generation train types operating on the system.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study conducted in the field of human-robot interaction (HRI) aimed at evaluating the impact of the presence of a robot on human performance. Experiments were carried out in a virtual reality (VR) environment and were about a disassembly-reassembly task in the aerospace field. A sample of 78 engineering students participated in the project, divided into two subgroups, one working in co-existence with a robot and the other performing the same task without the presence of the robot. The parameter monitored during the experiments to compare the groups was the total completion time of the disassembly-reassembly task. The results obtained show that the two groups have similar behaviour. Statistically, there are no significant differences between the groups, and qualitative analyses show very similar behaviour concerning the learning experience on the task.

In collaborative assembly processes, effective task scheduling is a corner-stone of organizational ergonomics, profoundly impacting productivity and the quality of human-robot interactions within a workplace setting. While various approaches to task planning in the Human-Robot Collaboration HRC have emerged in recent years, there is still a need for improvement, especially in terms of applicability to small and medium-sized enterprises SMEs, which typically have limited resources. This Paper presents a dynamic scheduling approach using genetic algorithms GA that addresses the challenge of harmonizing human and robot workloads, accounting for factors such as task interdependencies, skill prerequisites, and ergonomic considerations. To enhance accessibility from SMEs users, a user-friendly graphical interface GUI has been meticulously designed and integrated into the system. The developed approach was evaluated in a real use case. This demonstrated its particular performance with a 18% reduction in cycle time, which confirms its ability to improve collaboration between humans and robots.

Digital ubiquity has aided an industrial rise in Internet of Things (IoT) device integrability, machine-to-machine communication in manufacturing operations, and cybersecurity needs. Cyber-attacks from threats such as botnets exploit new forms of digital connectivity and threaten substantial financial losses for manufacturing enterprises. There is a need for an AI-powered network intrusion detection system adaptable enough to keep pace with growing digital landscapes. In this research, different Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms were deployed to detect botnet attacks on seven IoT devices. The primary objective was to develop secure and accurate models for the successful identification of security threats through botnet attacks. All models demonstrated high detection accuracy, precision, and recall rates above 90%. The decision tree (DT) model performed best, and exhibited 100% accuracy, precision, and recall for threat detection.

With the automotive industry's shift towards sustainability and energy efficiency, optimizing vehicle handling dynamics has become secondary. Additionally, there is a growing trend towards comfort-oriented design over handling performance. However, advancements such as integrating multiple independently controlled electric motors enable torque vectoring, offering a promising solution for reconciling these conflicting objectives. This paper proposes a novel approach to jointly improve vehicle handling and energy efficiency. Advanced simulation techniques are used to explore various suspension configurations to balance cornering performance and energy consumption. A torque vectoring controller is then designed in combination with meticulously tuned suspensions. This innovative approach, which considers active control design alongside suspension setup, achieves superior performance. Desired vehicle cornering capabilities are attained while ensuring significant efficiency in straight-line driving, which constitutes most road driving.

Despite the acknowledged advantages that computer simulations can offer to Radiographic Testing, simulation solutions are uncommon in the industry. This paper presents an effective strategy for the simulation of Radiographic Testing techniques using Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE), which is a medical imaging software toolkit. Models forX-ray emission, test specimen geometry, radiation interaction with the test specimen, and image receptors were created in GATE. Single Wall Single Image and Double Wall Single Image techniques were set up to evaluate the simulation models. The results showed that GATE can afford a reliable and cost-effective solution in the simulation of radiographic Non-Destructive Testing procedures.

The welding operation is a vital process of product assembly that exposes workers to discomforts owing to working in awkward positions, repetitive tasks, and manual material handling. This ergonomically unfit welding working conditions exposes workers to musculoskeletal disorders, which could result into workers illness. In light of this, this paper proposes a suitable ergonomically fit workstation for performing manual welding operations in a manufacturing environment. To address this, preliminary studies were conducted on an existing welding workstation with a view to identifying awkward body postures that could result into musculoskeletal disorders. The result of this exercise unveiled three alternative workstation design concepts that has the potential of addressing these ergonomic issues. The three (3) workstation design concepts were evaluated using theWeighted Decision Matrix approach based on design criteria such as degree of adjustability, maintenance cost, comfortability, ease of operation and safety. The result of the decision analysis exercise revealed that workstation design concept 2, with a performance score of 1.54 and design features such as vertical and tilting adjustable tabular system geometry fitted with wheels for mobility, and a back support adjustable chair, furnished with a rotating pad to influence the forward backward movement is the suitable ergonomically fit workstation that should be used to perform manual welding operations in a manufacturing environment.

This paper presents a slip control design method for a four wheel driven electric race car with low hardware requirements. In addition, to achieve robustness against the changing frictional conditions, a discrete-time Luenberger tractive force observer is designed. The tuning is carried out using the high-precision vehicle dynamics simulation software CarMaker. The performance of the controller is demonstrated in real-world tests. An extensive comparison is given to show the advantage of the proposed method over a previously designed PID controller.
