The development of the electric vehicle industry has the potential to reduce CO 2 emissions significantly and overcome energy supply challenges. However, manufacturing electric cars is a complex process consisting of procurement, logistics, and assembly. Accurate demand forecasting plays an essential role in the industry's long-term development because it effectively fulfills customer needs while mitigating the risks of overproduction. Forecasting electric vehicle demand presents a significant challenge due to limited data availability and multiple factors influencing it. Comprehensive research integrating economic, technological, and consumer dynamics into demand forecasts remains notably deficient. The main goal of this research is to develop demand forecasting of electric vehicles within Germany, considering those factors, including variables like gasoline prices, the count of installed charging stations, and the Google search index. The research involves experimentation with various models, including Prophet, SARIMA, and their variants, incorporating different combinations of exogenous variables. The results demonstrate that SARIMA and its variants outperform other models regarding predictive accuracy. This research equips electric vehicle manufacturing companies with invaluable insights into market trends and the potential impact of diverse influencing variables. With this knowledge, companies can adapt their production strategies to align with market dynamics, enhancing their competitiveness in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape.

Measurement of the velocity field in thermal-hydraulic experiments is of great importance for phenomena interpretation and code validation. Direct measurement by means of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is challenging in some multiphase's tests where the measurement system would be strongly affected by the phase interaction. A typical example can refer to the test with steam injection into a water pool where the rapid collapse of bubbles and significant temperature gradient makes it impossible to obtain main flow information in a relatively large steam flux. The goal of this work is to investigate the capability of the use of machine learning for the flow reconstruction of the jet induced by steam condensation from sparse temperature measurement with ThermoCouples (TCs). Two frameworks of (i) 'FDD' using pure data-driven modeling and (ii) 'FPINN' combining data-driven and Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINN) are proposed and investigated. The frameworks are applied to a single-phase turbulent planar jet with data generated by CFD simulations.

In the era of striving for sustainable production and organization of human work, projects with ergonomic objectives are being implemented in order to provide employees with the safest and most comfortable working conditions. The question of how to achieve a positive result from such projects is therefore being addressed. The research carried out and presented in this article analyzed the factors that contribute to the successful implementation of pro-ergonomic project management. These factors were assessed by experts in such projects and the results of these assessments were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and the convergence of expert opinions was examined using cluster analysis. The most important factors assessed by the experts were: "Ensuring full support of top management in the activities of the ergonomics" and "Effective involvement of employees in the analyzed workplaces in the implementation of pro-ergonomic projects (e.g. through surveys, interviews regarding the workplace)". The results were used to develop a method for implementing pro-ergonomic projects in manufacturing companies, the assumptions of which can be adapted depending on the project input data and company capabilities. The results of study can be used in manufacturing companies in different industries interested in pro-ergonomic project management.

Dedicated friction welding machines are sturdy in order to handle large process forces but expensive. Thus, it is proposed to equip two axis CNC lathes with an add-on direct drive friction welding system as an affordable solution for occasional use. The first part to be welded is clamped on the lathe chuck, whilst the second part is clamped on a dedicated chuck on the tailstock. The latter is programmed to follow three phases: fast approach, friction and forging under constant axial force. The tailstock is moved linearly by a servo motor and controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller with force sensor feedback. The main process parameters are pressure and duration of friction and forging phases. A neural network has been set up based on data from research literature providing the respective parameter values to enter in the operator interface. Preliminary welding tests conducted on PVC and aluminum parts resulted in moderately acceptable mechanical properties and some material discontinuities pointing to a need for automatically identifying optimal processing parameters.

A tropical cyclone is a natural disaster that has often led to a substantial threat to lives and properties during its landfall. The storm surges and inland flooding induced by tropical cyclones make the Bay of Bengal coast highly vulnerable. The rivers that discharge into oceans from the inland areas further worsen the flooding effect in the estuary and along some of the stretches of the river. Therefore, understanding the induvial and combined impact of river flows and storm surges becomes essential in evaluating the flood risk. The present study simulates the effects of surges and river flows along the Hooghly River, which is part of the river Ganga flowing through West Bengal and joining the Bay of Bengal. First, storm surges with synthetic tracks of various return periods are chosen to identify the worst-case scenario. Then, different river discharge values are considered to simulate the river-bay interaction using the one-way coupling approach of surge and inland models. The ADCIRC model is adopted to simulate the storm surges using the wind field created from the synthetic track. The inland flooding is simulated using the in-house hydraulic model IITMflo-I2D. The return period discharge values and surge time series from the ADCIRC model are given as upstream and downstream boundary conditions, respectively, in the inland model, IITMflo-I2D. The simulated water level time series from IITMflo-I2D are used to evaluate surge and river flow characteristics along the Hooghly River.

This paper describes the development of a Production Planning and Control (PPC) method implemented in a company that produces shower screens, to respond to problems associated with overproduction. In this system, the daily workload is directly influenced by the productivity presented in the bottleneck. The bottleneck was identified, a database was built to support the calculation of the bottleneck' productivity and the determination of the workload for each day. It is foreseeable that the system will bring considerable improvements in the productivity values. The data collected before and after the implementation of PPC system allowed identifying an increasing trend in the productivity values of the bottleneck resulting from the implementation.

In recent years, many problems have arisen, such as increased power consumption in commercial refrigerators due to water droplets on aluminum alloy surfaces, increased frost formation due to bacteria and mold, and increased transportation costs for bullet trains. To solve these problems, we turned our attention to surface texturing technology and shot blasting, a new surface component that can switch between hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties. Shot blasting can be applied to large areas at a lower cost than laser processing and can be used for surface texturing. This study reports the results of an evaluation of the effect of shot blasting on the surface wettability of aluminum alloys. Shot blasting was performed on aluminum alloy A5052 using various particles, and the wettability of the specimens was evaluated. It was found that the wettability after shot blasting varied with the particle material and particle size as in previous studies. Using the aspect ratio (dent depth/dent width) calculated from the surface roughness, it was found that the specimens became hydrophilic to hydrophobic up to an aspect ratio of 7 or less, and that the contact angle gradually increased to hydrophobic at an aspect ratio of 7 or greater.

The paper presents a model for drying building materials or masonry walls. The mixture approach was used to model transport phenomena in a porous medium. Therefore, effective properties were used instead of modeling the exact microstructure. The model considered three phases, i.e., solid material (matrix), liquid water, and humid air (a mixture of vapor and dry air). Liquid water capillary and diffusive vapor and air transfer were accounted for. Thermal equilibrium between all phases (the same temperature of all components) was assumed. However, the hygric non-equilibrium between the liquid water and vapor was considered. Hence, moisture phase transition with a finite rate could be modeled. The model was implemented in the commercial software ANSYS Fluent by using advanced customization user interfaces, i.e., User-Defined Function (UDF), Scalar (UDS), and Memory (UDM), which allowed extending the capability of the software to phenomena models that are not available in the software. The model was tested and subsequently validated against the experiment. The experimental stand was explicitly designed for comparing simulations with measurements. The experiment was conducted in forced convection conditions at the surface of the damp material. The validation shows limited agreement of the model predictions with the measurements.

A time-domain model for high frequency wheel-rail interaction considering the effect of flexible wheel and track is developed, the wheel-rail contact coupling between normal and tangential dynamics. Firstly, the impulse response functions of the wheel-rail structure are solved by using modal superposition method, and the wheel/rail flexible vibration responses are calculated by using the convolution with the wheel-rail contact force and the impulse response function that are calculated in advance. Then high frequency wheel-rail normal and tangential interaction forces are calculated and shown in the time domain with revised non-Hertzian contact theory, in which the effects of wheel-rail stick-slip oscillation in contact patch are considered.
