Tungsten carbide coating deposited by High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) spray process possesses high microhardness and dense coating structure. It has very good wear and corrosion resistant properties which are used on components in various industries such as aerospace, marine, offshore, oil and gas. Beside these known properties, there is one interesting surface property-the coating surface has potential to reach near superhydrophobic state which enable a durable antistick surface. This experimental study revealed that the HVOF sprayed WC-CoCr coating transiting from hydrophilicity during as-sprayed to hydrophobicity after 15 days of exposure to atmospheric condition.

Nowadays, most industrial processes require increased attention to the rational use of resources in line with economic, environmental, and social principles. In this context, products in a state of deterioration present valid solutions for reintegration into the lifecycle through the use of recovery, restoration, and reuse techniques. The so-called remanufacturing process is a facilitator of sustainability and circular economy practices through the design of closed-loop supply chains. However, transitioning from linear to closed-loop supply chains through the introduction of remanufacturing is not straightforward. For this reason, the aim of this paper is to provide a tool for assessing the readiness level for introducing remanufacturing from a circular economy perspective. A multi-methodological design approach, including a systematic literature review on readiness models and a systematic literature network analysis for remanufacturing adoption, is employed to identify gaps and propose a novel readiness model. The results propose R4CE, a remanufacturing readiness model for circular economy adoption in closed-loop supply chains. The model assesses the readiness on five levels and the three dimensions of collaboration mechanisms, closed-loop supply chain decisions, and policies and regulations. The research findings may be of interest to practitioners and researchers for readiness assessment.

This study investigates the dispersion of a cough-induced particle cloud in the presence of a large-scale circulation (LSC) predicted in an unsteady Reynolds-averaged-Navier-Stokes simulation (URANS), and compares the results with those of a direct numerical simulation (DNS). Both simulations share identical initial conditions and domain sizes, but they differ in spatial and temporal resolution and their approach to turbulence. After the jet phase, it is found that the particles in the URANS have not advanced as far in the horizontal direction as those in the DNS. The shape of the URANS particle cloud is symmetric in the horizontal inlet midplane, whereas in the DNS the particles appear to be irregularly distributed. In the well-developed puff phase, the particles of URANS have moved less far in horizontal direction than those of DNS. Although the lateral dispersion of the URANS particles is similar to that of the DNS particles, the top view shows a cone-shaped pattern for the URANS particles, whereas those of the DNS have a uniform distribution. The major difference between the URANS and DNS results in the late puff phase is the thicker and stronger boundary layer near the upper wall of the URANS, which impedes the vertical ascent of the particles, resulting in a stronger overall circulation intensity throughout the domain. In the jet phase, both URANS and DNS predictions exhibit good agreement in the vertical particle probability density distribution (PDF). However, this agreement is not observed in the well-developed and late puff phases.

In recent years, performance enhancement of dew point evaporative cooler (DPEC) has been thrived due to its high performance and low energy consumption. In this study, a new idea for designing the heat and mass exchanger, which is the core of DPEC, has been introduced and its performance has been evaluated under the climate conditions of Iraq. The new system consisted of one shell and a bundle of tubes. The shell is assigned as the wet channel, and the tube bundle is assigned as the dry channels. The weather data files for five different cities in Iraq were taken from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Thereafter, we created a typical weather data file for each city by averaging the last five years' weather data (from 2018 to 2022) so as to become a base for the numerical simulation. It was found that, under the climate condition of Basra, the DPEC reduced the dry bulb temperature by almost 30 degrees C (from 48 degrees C to 18.13 degrees C in July). Under Erbil climate, the system stayed operating in a stable condition, as it kept supplying air around 17.9 degrees C on average throughout the summer season. The system achieved the highest yearly average cooling capacity of about 721 W when it was operated under Basra climate, while it achieved the lowest rate of about 477 W when it was operated under Haj Omran climate.

The construction of sea-crossing channels has become an important part of the transportation infrastructure construction, and is developing in the direction of a larger span, deeper foundation and more complex system. Compared with traditional bridges, the sea-crossing bridges are facing the challenges of structural durability, wind resistance, complex environment and construction difficulties. In order to deal with the various challenges encountered in the design, construction and operation of the sea crossing channels, this paper puts forward the scheme combining immersed tunnel with submerged floating tunnel for crossing the Dongwuyang water area in Fujian Province, China after considering the topographic, geological and hydrological conditions. The cross section of SFT tube, arrangement of cables and the type of foundation were preliminary designed. The tube deformation, stress and cable force of the submerged floating tunnel under different load combinations were also analyzed by Midas/Civil. The global dynamic response analysis of the SFT structure under the wave and current load was carried out by ABAQUS. The static stress distribution of the SFT concrete tube was analyzed by the 3D finite element model. The results show that under the action of environment and service loads, the design indexes such as internal force, deformation and acceleration of the SFT tube meet the requirements of the design code, which indicates the SFT scheme is feasible, and it has good advantage for the deep-water construction environment.

Humans have often been perceived as a leading cause of error in Zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM) processes. There is thus a reduction of human interventions in the deployment of industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies used for ZDM such as Machine Learning (ML). However, as manufacturing (e.g., I4.0 context) is often placed within a socio-technological context involving the co-integration of humans and technology, the manufacturing processes are now more vulnerable to cyber risk and threats. System vulnerabilities also derive from limitations associated with ML. This paper highlights three challenges associated with ML: explainability, data privacy, and security for ZDM. We argue that due to the high level of data complexity and lack of flexibility in ML models, humans play a critical role in ZDM decision-making. The paper explores the concept of security culture as an enabler for transformative resilience and zero-defect manufacturing and contributes to rethinking the human-centered approach in ZDM. The paper stresses a need to enhance contextual and empirical understanding of transformative resilience and security culture in ML/ZDM environments to better address adverse events such as cyber threat situations.

Disassembly is a significant step in remanufacturing of acquired End-of-Life (EOL) multi peripheral (MP) imaging device. Most of the cases disassembly processes are done manually, which is very exhaustive and has low disassembly efficiency. Recently, robotic disassembly sequence planning (DSP) has widely been studied. It is mainly designed to improve disassembly efficiency and to minimize disassembly cost and time before executing the disassembly process. Further, Human-Robot collaboration (HRC) has gained considerable attention to handle difficulties in DSP in remanufacturing. Therefore, in this paper, DSP of EOL of MP device for Human-robot collaboration is developed by the Stackelberg game theoretic model. This game-theoretic model can be able to manage the volatile and uncertain features of human operators to obtain human-oriented HRC disassembly. In this work, firstly, the Stackelberg model is developed to generate feasible disassembly sequences of EOL of MP device. Further we have presented comparison between game theory and non-game theory based HRC approach.

This study has investigated the robustness of different tools for profile and areal roughness measurements, profilometer, metrology software and fitting element-based analysis, on AlSi10Mg parts produced by the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process. The tools used for areal measurements have led to a difference of about 6%. Furthermore, the areal method has been used to observe the surface morphology. A better correspondence between P- and S-parameters has been found compared with that reported in the literature between the S- and R-parameters. For profile measures, it has been shown that the cut-off length can be used as evaluation length.

Digital twins expand production systems to include a virtual space for analysing, monitoring, and predicting production processes. Hybrid Modeled Digital Twins (HMDT), which combine physics-based and data-driven models, hold significant potential for improving key performance indicators in manufacturing processes. In a wide range of applications, hybrid models have shown their ability to, for example, improve environmental sustainability, reduce waste, and predict process outcomes. However, a common assumption in existing approaches is the availability of all model inputs for HMDT. In real-world scenarios, there may be disturbances in data transmission, such as incorrectly connected cables to machines or sensors, or failures in wireless communication. In such cases, traditional HMDT become incapable of providing instructions to the real system. This paper, therefore, introduces a novel concept: the design of resilient HMDT capable of delivering dependable feedback to real systems in the absence of inputs during short periods. This resilience enables the continued utilization of these models under restricted input conditions, albeit with a modest reduction in functionality. To exemplify this concept, we present a use case of a resilient HMDT in the field of industrial polishing of stoneware floor tiles.

As an emerging technology that integrates multi-physics, multi-scale and multi-discipline properties, digital twinning can enable the interaction between the physical and information worlds. Disassembly has been widely used as an important method for manufacturing and green manufacturing. However, the uncertainty of the disassembly shop and the isolation of the disassembly information seriously affect the effective operation of the disassembly shop. In this paper, we propose a disassembly scheduling cloud platform based on digital twinning techniques. Compared with intelligent algorithms, it can effectively address the uncertainty factor in the disassembly shop. First, we build a workflow model graph for the disassembly scheduling cloud platform. Second, the whole process monitoring system of the disassembly scheduling workshop is constructed to monitor the disassembly dynamics in real time. Third, we build a digital twinning-based dynamic perturbation architecture for the disassembly scheduling cloud platform and use big data analysis techniques to predict and diagnose dynamic perturbations from multiple sources. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed framework is validated by enterprise instances, on which the disassembly scheduling cloud platform is applied.
