In this paper, a symmetric single-sided vibro-impact nonlinear energy sink (SSSVI NES) is introduced to the shock response suppression of a cantilever beam. The equations of motion of the system are derived. The modal test of the cantilever beam is carried out to verify the correctness of the assumption of the Euler-Bernoulli beam. The SSSVI NES is designed based on the modal test results. An experimental study is performed to validate the response suppression performance of the SSSVI NES on the beam under shock excitation. The time history of the acceleration response, wavelet spectrum, and peak response in the frequency domain are all examined. Both simulation and experimental results show that SSSVI NES can effectively suppress the shock response of a cantilever beam.

The article presents a developed simulator program, created in the Scilab software environment, for the automated calculation of the cutting temperature, the basis of which was the natural thermocouple method. The proposed model for calculating the cutting temperature for different materials and process conditions considers the influence of the physical basis of the cutting processes of material processing. An algorithm for calculating this value was developed to obtain a graph of the temperature change during the cutting process depending on the processing modes, the diameter of the part, and the "processing material - tool material" pair. The change in the position of the current point on the graph relative to the theoretical value of the cutting temperature, due to the influence of physical processes, is realized by the introduction of random fluctuations superimposed on the surface profile, which are produced by a random number generator according to the law of normal probability distribution. The method of processing the array of coordinates of profile points to obtain the measured value of the cutting temperature was described. The program has implemented the possibility of constructing three-dimensional and two-dimensional graphs of the dependence of the cutting temperature on the cutting and feed speeds, which can be used to study the effect of processing modes on the cutting temperature depending on the combination of "processing material - tool material".

Digital transformation of industrial training processes is still an ongoing process. The transformation requires a specific training model to be applied to an already structured context, to experienced workers, sometimes with their needs and specific skills, and the solution is designed considering a series of boundary conditions. To design a new training model that the industry will accept, it is important to consider the design space offered by technology, but at the same time, to consider human complexity. This paper proposes a methodology to analyze current training strategies in the industrial sector to design new tools according to a digital transformation logic that considers the underlying principle of the human centricity of Industry 5.0.

The laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) 3D printing technology opens up new opportunities for additive manufacturing of heat-resistance superalloys. At the same time, the LPBF method needs to be improved for critical applications. In addition, post-processing techniques for the LPBF-built Inconel alloys should be developed and integrated. This work focuses on observing the structural and strengthening mechanisms in the LPBF-produced Inconel 718 alloy subjected to thermomechanical post-processing. Various heat treatments combined with a hot isostatic pressing (HIP) were applied to provide the required grain-size microstructure and phase state, increasing the hardness and material density. Furthermore, the surface layers of the heat-treated samples were finished and hardened by an ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) to form the grain-size nanostructure and compressive residual macro-stresses in the near-surface layers. The yield strength, hardening intensity, and local plasticity magnitudes were theoretically evaluated for the LPBF-printed and thermomechanically post-processed Inconel 718 superalloy, considering the microhardness and structure/phase/chemical composition using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The outcome of this study shows the formation of a pore-free microstructure with a more homogeneous distribution of Nb in solid solution, gamma '' precipitation, and MC carbides after HIP combined with heat treatments, increasing the hardening intensity by 35-38%. UIT severe plastic deformation increased the subsurface hardening intensity by 58-68% of the heat-treated 718 alloy samples due to the grain refinement and increase in dislocation density.

This paper describes a design method based on muscle synergies to minimize the number of sensors on surface electromyography (sEMG) shorts for monitoring motor and fun activities with playground equipment. We started from data collected during an experimental campaign with four playground equipment in Kinder Joy of Moving parks. In details, five sEMG located on the leg and one IMU located on the back were employed. From this data, muscle synergies extraction using non-negative matrix factorization algorithm was carried out. Then, the minimum number of sEMG sensors that allows the reconstruction of all sEMG patterns with a VAF for each muscle and each playground over 0.90 was defined. The results underlined how with two sEMG sensors placed on the vastus lateralis and semitendinosus, is possible to reconstruct five sEMG patterns for all four-playground equipment guaranteeing an accuracy in terms of VAF cumulative over 0.97. This work might pave the way to simplify the design of sEMG shorts for motor and fun activities reducing invasiveness, costs and environmental impact.

More than 90% of atrial thrombi in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation originate in the Left Atrial Appendage (LAA), a diverticulum of the left atrium of the human heart, whose morphology predisposes the stasis of blood within it. The Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion procedure shows promise for reducing the risk of stroke due to blood clots in the body circulation after forming in the LAA;however, it must be performed by experienced operators due to the numerous associated risks. The objective is to develop a simulator for training novice operators in the procedure to plan the optimal occlusion path on representative models. Starting from a dataset of 20 diagnostic images provided by the Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria of Careggi, a three-dimensional reconstruction of the anatomical areas involved in the surgical procedure and their spatial identification are performed. These results are used to design a device for the adjustment of a 3D printed model of the LAA with correct orientation and spatial coordinates. The simulator is a highly customizable and patient-specific prototype system;the ease of use and small size help its acceptability and reduce the time required for practice in use. The maximum positioning errors associated with the resolution of the measuring instrument is estimated at 5%;it is therefore considered acceptable.

This work is a preliminary study investigating the issues related to the preparation and characterisation of green composites with a biodegradable matrix (PLA) and a natural filler typical of the Mediterranean area, sourced from alien/invasive plants (Chamaerops humilis). Additive manufacturing has been chosen as the primary technique to produce these bio-composites, leveraging its ability to produce complex geometries with precision. The choice of Chamaerops humilis is motivated by the fact that these plants are non-edible and abundant in the Mediterranean area, aligning with the new design guidelines inspired by the circular economy and "zero waste" principles. This paves the way for the creation of a new generation of green and sustainable materials. Using this plant as a filler for green composites is expected to enable the biodegradation of the composites in marine environments while providing remarkable mechanical properties. Starting from the selected materials, filaments will be manufactured for 3D printing components made of polymeric material with different filler percentages (10% wt and 20% wt). mechanical and chemical-physical analyses will be conducted to evaluate the process parameters and assess their printability. The effect of fillers and their different percentages on the mechanical performance of the filaments will also be evaluated.

The study focused on analyzing the influence of casting methods on the microstructure of high-speed steel castings. The research revealed significant differences in the microstructural characteristics of steel twist drills manufactured through various casting techniques. The results demonstrated that the casting method significantly affects the distribution and arrangement of carbides within the microstructure. Specifically, the analysis showed that castings produced by different methods exhibited distinct carbide mesh structures, with carbide size, distribution, and alignment variations. These findings highlight the importance of selecting the appropriate casting method to optimize the microstructural properties of high-speed steel castings for enhanced cutting tool performance. The article describes a specialized software package developed by the authors for processing and analyzing digital images of microstructures. Visual and quantitative results of the study of microstructures of twist drills obtained by various casting methods are presented. The influence of the technology of casting into a water-cooled chill mold and investment casting on the formation of the microstructure and properties of high-speed steel castings is shown. The main technological parameters for casting drill blanks into water-cooled chill molds have been identified.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI) techniques are nowadays widely accepted as one of the paths towards addressing the interpretability and transparency issues of using black box models. Such techniques may allow to understand, to a certain extent, how or why a model produced a certain output, which may even help identify problems with the model or the data. As in many other domains, the use of xAI techniques in the context of manufacturing is seen as fundamental towards understanding model outputs, supporting informed decision-making, or enabling more human-centric approaches. In this paper, we specifically look at LIME, one of the most widely used approaches to xAI, and at how it needs to be adapted to the manufacturing context. Specifically, we show how the image permutations introduced by LIME might deceive the underlying model and generate poor explanations, and propose a methodology to address this issue. The specific use-case is on defect detection in the textile manufacturing industry.

A combined translational and rotational system with different combinations of elements is used to find time-domain solutions and observe the forced response of a mechanical system with two degrees of freedom. Mathematical models for all four proposed cases are derived, and the proper outputs are plotted with the aid of MATLAB (R) and its numerical simulation tool Simulink (R). The obtained results in graphs representing translational and rotational movements are analyzed and compared to study the dynamic behavior of the combined mechanical system. The results indicate oscillatory motions for all cases. The influence of removing some elements, like springs and damper, is also investigated. The systems are also modeled in the complex domain, and the proper transfer functions are created. Zeroes and poles of these functions are determined, and the stability of the systems is examined through Bode plots and Nyquist diagrams. The results indicate that all observed systems will remain stable after closing the feedback loops, even in cases of increased gains.
