Vehicle localization is one of the key technical factors for autonomous vehicles. It requires high accuracy, precision, and robustness towards various road conditions. Popular localization methods include global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and visual methods, but their accuracy can degrade in some conditions. This work proposes to use the environmental magnetic field (EMF) for localization to complement the shortcomings of existing methods. EMF is a combination of the Earth's geomagnetic field and magnetic field induced by man-made objects. It has local fluctuations that can be paired with coordinate positions and is time-invariant within a practical timescale. Past works considering the localization of road vehicles had few problems when applying them to the localization of autonomous vehicles. This work overcomes the problems in the existing method by creating a two-dimensional magnetic field map using Gaussian Process regression, using magnetic markers to enhance EMF fluctuations, and utilizing the Monte Carlo localization algorithm. The proposed method was validated through actual vehicle tests, and its robustness towards other vehicles was examined.

Accurately positioning the tip of steerable catheters is crucial for effective catheter-based operations. This requires an understanding of the moment-curvature relationship of a catheter. However, determining this relationship using traditional methods is challenging due to catheters' multi-material and segmented structure. This study introduces a method for determining the moment-curvature relationship of each segment of the steerable catheter by using a load cell and stereovision system. The load cell and stereo camera are utilized to collect moment and curvature data, respectively, over time. An algorithm to detect the catheter from images is developed, and the procedure of getting the curvature of each segment is demonstrated. The moment-curvature relationship is plotted as the moment changes with time. The reliability of stereo camera is verified showing error less than 4 mm, and the algorithm successfully detects the curvature of the catheter by segments. This study offers a tool to measure steerable catheters' material properties, and ultimately enhances catheter-based interventions' precision.

To meet global steel demand in construction, automotive, defense, and machinery, high-quality production is essential. Manual inspection methods are inefficient and subjective, prompting a shift to automated defect detection using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). This study evaluates CNN models (CancerNet, ExceptionNet, InceptionNet, and a custom CNN) on the NEU-CLS-64 dataset, emphasizing metrics like accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and F1 score. MobileNet excels in performance, albeit at a higher cost, while ZFNet lags. Traditional manual defect detection methods are time-consuming and prone to inaccuracies, highlighting the efficiency of CNNs aligned with Lean manufacturing principles. The paper explores various CNN-based image classification algorithms, emphasizing their role in enhancing defect detection in steel production, aligning with Industry 4.0 principles. Decision-makers gain crucial insights for selecting effective CNN models in steel surface detection processes.

The influence of the drive torque distribution of an AWD vehicle with individual motors at the front and rear axles on the handling and stability properties is investigated. By applying bifurcation analysis methods, different types of loss of stability at combined longitudinal and lateral acceleration are identified. The impact of the drive torque distribution on the stability boundaries in the GG diagram is examined, and the related stable acceleration envelope is compared to the envelope derived from applying optimisation methods. Representative corresponding handling characteristics are compared and discussed.

The study aims to investigate the technology management (TM) sphere in metal processing companies engaged in a business cluster. This study presents SEM modelling using the PLS method on data obtained from a survey of companies involved in a business cluster, which allowed to examine the impact of factors important for cooperation on individual stages of TM. This study implies that business cluster engagement can play a beneficial role in the TM sphere in the studied companies. Engagement in the cluster can facilitate knowledge acquisition, leading to strategic and operational advantages. The cluster can play an especially beneficial role when it comes to the initiation of work on a technology - a search for new technologies, and when existing technologies are developed. Companies can obtain precious knowledge from/thanks to participation in a business cluster. Knowledge supporting and allowing innovations appears to play a primary role in achieving advantages from cluster membership;however, this is not applied to most companies in the studied cluster. The SEM model proves that cooperation between business partners in a cluster structure really matters.

To guide the development of driver assistant systems and fully automated solutions for reversing long combination vehicles (LCVs), the principles for reversing LCVs are investigated using the articulation angle gradient. The widely used Steady-state Circling Limitation (SSCL) in reversing LCVs has two main drawbacks: it restricts vehicles from operating with large articulation angles crucial for tight spaces and lacks a well-defined feasible range. Two new reverse principles are introduced that can provide better insight. The first principle extends SSCL to include more extreme articulation angles for single-articulated vehicles. It also addresses the necessity of considering articulation gradients when developing the continuous reverse limitation for multi-articulated vehicles. The second principle introduces limited distance reversing for vehicles that no longer meet the first principle's requirements, providing additional vehicle ending poses useful for tasks like loading and coupling.

The paper aims to highlight the lack of usage of knowledge-based expert systems in purchasing decisions in the context of hybrid corporate reality. We use the transdisciplinary approach in our work, which is essential to examine the problem that occurs in the reality. While reviewing publications containing the keywords "Cognitive bias" and "Supplier selection", we focused on the methods used. The examined methods in the pooled papers are mainly based on arithmetic and rank the possibilities without considering the available expert knowledge then and there. Afterwards, we propose a solution beyond analyzing the data measured in the past;in addition, the decision-maker, their mental model, and their knowledge is considered. We assume that the effects of cognitive biases are more readily identifiable when using expert systems in considering the decision-maker's opinions in connectionwith the actually applied rules in making decisions. In addition to seemingly objective solutions, in our experiment, we propose that by using past cases with known results, complex rules, which are based on the expert's knowledge, can be simplified without changing the results of decisions in purchasing.

The recent advancements in computer hardware opened new doors to the modeling and simulation of intensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) problems. The advent of modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) made parallel computing easier by allowing cards to run multiple kernels in several parallel threads with double-precision. However, traditional CFD codes still lack hardware usage optimization due to a low threads scalability computing methodology. Hence, a computational performance investigation between codes run on GPU and Central Processing Unit (CPU) is presented in this work. The analysis was focused on the three-dimensional simulation of a Laser Beam Welding (LBW) process with a moving heat source and non-linear thermal properties. The solutions were developed by applying the Finite Volume Method (FVM) to solve the transient heat conduction Partial Differential Equation (PDE). The phase change was accounted through the enthalpy method. A time and space-dependent Gaussian conical volumetric profile was used to model the heat source. The GPU solutions were computed by a CUDA-C in-house code running on a Nvidia Geforce RTXT 3090 and RTXT 4090 video cards, both with 24 GB of memory. Three equivalent solutions were produced by top-rated commercial codes. All codes were run on an Intel (R) Core (TM) I9 12900KF CPU with 3.6 GHz base clock and 16 cores. The results evidenced that GPU and CPU processing are similarly precise but GPUs can achieve far faster and more power efficient CFD solutions. The GPU code demonstrated better memory optimization when simulating LBW.

Since hydrogen is odorless, invisible and highly flammable, regular checks must be carried out to ensure the safe operation of large-scale H2-electrolyzer systems. Leakage tests are conducted during the assembly, the commissioning and the operation of the plant. Since many leakage tests have to be executed, efficient processes are required to reduce production and downtimes to enable a fast scale-up of electrolysis capacities. Therefore, Methods for leakage inspection are compared and technological implementations are discussed. This work contributes to the necessary analysis of requirements to derive research demands and solution concepts for large-scale electrolysis plants.

Nuclear reactors and associated structural facilities are designed to withstand various types of thermal, vibrational and fatigue loading. Despite careful design considerations, these structures are susceptible to damage due to unforeseen scenarios and can cause imminent danger in retrospect of nuclear radiation leakages, loss of infrastructure and life. To avoid catastrophic outcomes, continuous structural health monitoring (SHM) of such structures ensure safety and efficient maintenance protocols. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) provides a valuable insight into structural performance during operation. Optimal sensor placement (OSP) provides critical and cost-effective structural insight with reduced number of sensors. OSP also allows for utilizing a reduced order FE model for full field estimation of the structural behavior. A D-optimal method is shown to be used in tandem with System Equivalent Reduction Expansion Process (SEREP) for sensor placement and full field estimation of the measurand, respectively. Three test cases using simple structural elements such as beam and plate with various boundary conditions are subjected to single point harmonic and impact load. The strain data collected at the optimal sensor locations has been shown to produce fairly accurate reconstruction of the structural dynamic response when observed at different time instances. The full field strain/displacement fields for the structures enabled to determine load magnitude and location. This concept is proposed to be extended to structures such as reactors, boilers, and piping in nuclear facilities to provide a detailed and comprehensive monitoring of these structures and to avoid damages and failure due to unknown cause(s).
