The machining of difficult-to-cut materials such as Inconel 718 certainly poses many problems. Threads made in this type of material are a special case, as their manufacture is one of the most demanding turning operations. The high cutting forces occurring during this process often cause deformations of thin-walled parts. The authors of the present study decided to evaluate the quality of threads used in aircraft engines. Microscopic metallographic tests were carried out for three types of external threads, differing mainly in their profile angles. Micrographs of selected thread fragments were taken and then compared with respect to the differences and similarities. In order to better explain some of the deformations, these images were compared with surface topography images. The influence of temperature and cutting forces on the overall microstructure image was noticed. Attention was also drawn to the burr that occurred in trapezoidal threads. The side surfaces of threads with larger angles were characterized by the presence of regular irregularities. These changes were confirmed on the surface topography images. Potential reasons for the obtained results were indicated.

To meet a fast-growing demand of the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) in China, this study aims at a better understanding of noise and vibration characteristics due to activities at a train depot of the metro system, as well as the transmission from the depot to above TOD. Noise and vibration field measurements at the Luogang depot are presented. Noise and vibration source at the depot, transmitting through structural elements to the depot roof plate, and finally to housing properties above the depot were evaluated. Wheel-rail induced noise and vibration from the throat zone featuring rail switches, from the test track at higher train speeds, and as trains entering the inspection and maintenance yard were investigated. The influence of using different track-forms for vibration mitigation was examined.

This paper presents a sensor-less vehicle state estimation method using a neural network for semi-active suspensions. This method surpasses conventional mathematical models in performance and reduces calibration effort. The developed system, logic, and learning method are designed to address AI-specific challenges such as increased processing load and learning techniques, and their performance is validated through simulations and real-world tests. The results show that this system performs on par with those using dedicated sensors.

In the context of urban smart mobility, automated vehicles communicating with each other, surrounding infrastructure, and other traffic participants yield the use for cooperative driving in urban environments. This, alongside an increase in safety and comfort, can help to reduce fuel and energy consumption individually and with regard to the cooperative vehicle cluster. In this paper we are addressing the impact urban cooperative driving has on the energy consumption of electric vehicles and further investigate the impact on drive systems and their layout, as well as the impact different control strategies of the cooperative network and scenarios with varying vehicles densities have. In order to evaluate the impact, defined driving profiles from a graph based optimization for cooperation networks are evaluated with regard to their energy consumption. Based upon the results the overall energetic impact of different intersection approaching strategies as well as the drive system impact are discussed.

The stability of production processes is critical for companies to deliver products to customers on time and to specification. In mass production, where a large number of machines and equipment are used, processes are multistage and product variety is high, the possibilities for effective analysis depend largely on the level of implementation of information techniques that can increase the availability of process data. In turn, increased data availability provides a more complete picture of production processes, the changes that are taking place and their impact on quality and stability. With the increasing number of information techniques available, the amount of data generated by the manufacturing industry (process records, events, images, parameters) is expected to grow exponentially. However, access to data alone is not sufficient. To make the data useful for Root Cause Analysis (RCA), it must be analyzed, interpreted and visualized. This paper presents a comparison, evaluation and selection of the type of control cards used to monitor and control the quality performance of manufactured products. It was assumed that the values monitored on the control cards should be able to be represented as sets of non-conforming products (product fractions) in the whole population of manufactured products.

We propose a forward-gazing model for path planning (Preview Path-Planning model) as the most basic model that provides insight to people who share the paradigm of human-like path-planning modeling. The basic concept is to apply a low-pass filter to changes in forward curvature. In addition, the phase delay due to the low-pass filter is compensated by forward gaze. We also report the results of determining the longitudinal motion by applying the GVC technology to the situation in which the vehicle could run perfectly along the path.

With the increased usage of difficult-to-machine materials for high-temperature applications, problems like high-temperature machining, build-up-edge, and tool wear have a major contribution to high-cost manufacturing. This review intends to promote a comprehensive resume about non-conventional machining processes that may facilitate the machinability of INCONEL (R), lower manufacturing costs and moderate production problems. To expedite the approach of the subject to other future researchers, the chosen timeline goes from 2018 to 2023. Having twenty references as a limiting factor, each non-conventional processes have one or two states-of-the-art. The main keywords used in seeking information were: "non-conventional manufacturing", "EDM", "ECM", "hybrid manufacturing", "LBM", "MAF", "WJM", "INCONEL (R) 718" and "INCONEL (R) 625". The combination of them enabled to find information about the evolution of INCONEL (R) non-traditional machining technologies. To subsequent research, a trend of non-conventional manufacturing is inexistent, however, some techniques are yet to be deeply exploited. It was ascertained, nevertheless, the characteristics of some non-conventional processes pose great advantages over traditional ones.

A study is presented into the sensitivity of rolling noise to design changes in a two-stage baseplate rail fastening system. The focus is on the influence on the rolling noise of three parameters of the fastening system: the stiffnesses of the railpad and the baseplate pad and the thickness of the baseplate that determines its mass and sound radiation ratio. The TWINS model is adapted by introducing the baseplate vibration and sound radiation using results from an experimentally verified 2.5D finite element model. Based on the simulations, an optimum railpad stiffness is identified of around 500 MN/m, based on a baseplate pad stiffness value of 80 MN/m. The thickness of the baseplate has only a small effect on the total rolling noise.

Diabetic foot is a complication that carries a considerable risk in diabetic patients. The consequent loss of protective sensitivity in the lower limbs requires an early diagnosis due to the imminent possibility of ulceration or amputation of the affected limb. To assess the loss of protective sensitivity, the 10 gf Semmes-Weinstein (SW) monofilament is the most used first-line procedure. However, the used device is most often non-calibrated and its feedback can lead to decision errors. In this paper we present an equipment that is able to automatically conduct a metrological verification and evaluation of the 10 gf SW monofilament in the assessment of the loss of protective sensitivity. Additionally, the proposed equipment is able to simulate the practicioner's procedure, or can be used for training purposes, providing force-feedback information. After calibration, displacement vs. buckling force contours were plotted for three distinct monofilaments, confirming then ability of the equipment to provide fast, detailed and precise information.

The aim of this study was to design and verify in practice a low-cost mechatronic actuated prosthetic device for the upper limb. First, a mechanical prosthesis was built for a test patient - an 40-year male patient with transradial amputation. Automated design methods were applied, using the AutoMedPrint technology. Then, the prosthesis was converted into an actuated, mechatronic device. Two design variants were proposed - the first one with a DC motor and a servo and the second one with two servo mechanisms. They were 3D printed using low-cost printers, assembled - using cheap, widely available electronics, programmed and verified. With participation of experts, a survey was made and the prostheses were evaluated. It was concluded that this research direction is a promising one. It is possible to build functional, actuated prostheses by a fraction of a price of the advanced, commercial bionic solutions, yet they still need further development, functional improvements and tests with patients.
