Periodic repetitive perforations are known to attenuate vibration. This work studies the effect of variation of cavity types, their sizes, ligament efficiencies and thickness of plates on vibration attenuation in a cantilever plate. It establishes a relationship between the above-mentioned structural parameters and wide band gaps in vibration attenuation. A Finite Element Method (FEM) model of cantilever plates with Shell 63 elements is used for modal analysis and a convergence study is conducted. The results show a substantial widening of these band gaps based on an optimal choice of the varying parameters. It is observed that in case of a cantilever plate with circular perforations, thickness is the most influential variable for bandgaps, followed by hole diameters and ligament ratio. With an increase in plate thickness and decrease in hole diameters, there is an increase in the bandgaps. This study is crucial in situations where a large frequency range is to be attenuated.

Innovation in organizations is a management approach that helps achieve high standards of competitiveness in today's markets, in addition to the financial and economic success so sought after in the 21st century. Many organizations today are committed to making efforts of some kind of innovation;call it product innovation, process innovation or even business model innovation. In Mexico and the rest of Ibero America, some craft organizations have begun to make efforts of some kind of incremental one, also known by its Japanese name "Kaizen". This paper presents a case study methodology based on an artisanal company that manufactures "Talavera" products in Puebla Mexico. The company applied incremental innovation in some of its artisanal processes to significantly improve its operations by reducing MUDA(waste) and errors in manual processes.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of hybrid commercial vehicle technology, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with fuel cell applications offers a promising frontier for efficient, sustainable and eco-friendly road freight system. There has been many different approaches on optimization of power split between the electric motor and the fuel cell system (FCS). Conventional approaches use quadratic optimization to determine the optimal power from the electric motor at each discrete grid point along the route, with initial and final battery state of charge (SoC) as constraints. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning-based approach to optimize the power split between the electric motor and the FCS in a hybrid vehicle at every time point during the vehicle's trip. The agent demonstrated the ability to autonomously learn and improve power split decisions, resulting in enhanced fuel efficiency.

The advent of Industry 4.0 has created a need for more flexible and adaptable manufacturing systems. This paper proposes the integration of AAS (Asset Administration Shells), SBM (Skill-based manufacturing) and OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture), to enable more flexible manufacturing systems. The integration of these concepts provides a solution for achieving faster and easier dynamic reconfiguration in manufacturing systems, which is essential for fulfilling the demand of customization and flexibility in modern production systems. An Asset Administration Shell provides a standardized structure for describing assets and their administration, while Skill-based manufacturing enables the deployment of task-oriented machines that can self-configure, self-diagnose, and self-optimize their performance. The use of OPC UA as a communication protocol ensures that these systems can communicate with one another in a secure and reliable way. This paper presents a conceptual framework for the integration of these three open technologies. This framework contributes to having a single interface and source of information for every asset, which can lead to increased efficiency by reducing changeover times, thus reducing the overall cost in flexible manufacturing system scenarios. Future work will focus on the implementation and validation of this framework in a real-world manufacturing setting.

Changes in customer demand and technological advances increase production scheduling complexity. A solution to handle the increased complexity is to facilitate machine learning. Current reviews of the research of scheduling algorithms focus on summarizing existing methods. They lack the characteristics of practical implications arising from the increased complexity of the scheduling problem by Industry 4.0 and do not consider how the scheduling algorithms cope with the added complexity. Therefore, we address these issues and synthesize the current literature in a comprehensive literature review and taxonomy. We discuss how they address changeovers, buffers before and after machines, prioritization of jobs, dynamics of production, and transportation on the shop floor. Afterward, we summarize the concepts of scheduling approaches and derive five research gaps.

Research reactors are nuclear reactors used for radiopharmaceuticals production, basic and fundamental research, development of nuclear power technologies, education and training. They have usually low-temperature and low-pressure design with light water as the cooling medium. Since they serve as a neutron-producing machine for various medical, scientific and industrial applications, they have high neutron fluxes, usually at least an order of magnitude higher than the power nuclear reactors. Their cores can be filled with experimental devices that mimic the conditions in both fusion and advanced fission reactors. In the paper, the examples of the aforementioned applications are presented. MARIA's flexible design is described as an example of medium-sized reactor for countries with ambitions in fields of nuclear medicine and advanced power reactors technologies.

Due to their high specific heat, low viscosity, and good diffusivity, supercritical fluids have the potential to be ideal coolants. However, understanding the heat transfer for fluids under supercritical conditions has been a challenge. To understand the peculiar heat transfer characteristics, a wide range of experiments with different ranges of parameters and geometrical configurations has been conducted. The generated experimental data can be used as a reference to expand and assess the prediction accuracy of computational fluid dynamics models under supercritical conditions. Out of these models, RANS is the most widely used and consumes less computational power relative to other models. In this paper, natural circulation heat transfer of supercritical carbon dioxide will be investigated using RANS approach. To validate the prediction accuracy of RANS model, an extensive comparative study with experimental data is presented in the present paper.

As the demand for cooling electronic components continues to increase, the microchannel has become a widely applicable solution in electronic device cooling because of its excellent thermal characteristics and flexible structures. This paper focuses on the heat transfer process of a type of single-phase sinusoidal wavy microchannel heated from the bottom. A 3D model is established by COMSOL to perform stationary calculations for cases with the dimensionless amplitude (alpha) from 0 to 0.25 and Reynolds number (Re) from 60 to 1000. Temperature, velocity, and pressure distributions of the microchannel are calculated. Relationships between two sets of dimensionless parameters and equivalent thermal resistance (R), average Nusselt number (Nu), and friction coefficient (f) are investigated and presented. For alpha between 0.125 and 0.25, Re between 60 and 1000, and Prandtl number (Pr) within (6 +/- 0.8), correlations of Nu and f are obtained through multi-parameter fitting. Performance evaluation criteria of wavy microchannels (PECwavy) are calculated, taking the straight rectangular microchannel (alpha = 0) as a reference. The case with alpha = 0.25 and Re = 1000 shows the greatest efficiency for Re between 400 and 1000.

Combustion of pulverized solid fuels includes complex interactions between chemical reactions, multiphase flows, and radiation. In particular, the high particle number density near the burner is significantly affected by these interactions. Accurate modeling of these phenomena is crucial for describing flame characteristics. In this study, the impact of turbulence modulation on the characteristics of a swirling pulverized solid fuel flame is investigated by means of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations. The numerical model is built in Ansys Fluent equipped with user-defined functions that adapt the modeling of combustion sub-processes such as devolatilization and char conversion under oxy-fuel conditions. Simulation results show that two-way coupling is particularly important in the near burner region and, more importantly, that neglecting turbulence modulation does not transport the error to the downstream region.

This article concerns issues related to teaching and learning methods, with particular emphasis on adults and the effectiveness of the educational process. Combining pedagogical and technical knowledge, the authors propose the process of teaching economic efficiency accounting, based on the example of a group of future engineers from Generation Z. The teaching process was divided into five meetings: three mini lectures with discussion, solving problem tasks with the support of an IT tool, and participation in a game. IT support included sets of problem tasks prepared in Microsoft Excel, and the proposed game is intended to verify the knowledge acquired by students. The authors assumed that if a student played the prepared game several times, the student would face various problem situations and would share their knowledge with team members (the exchange of views creates a synergy effect), which would translate into remembering the material from the subject.
