Plug & Produce is a modern automation concept in smart manufacturing for modular, quick, and easy reconfigurable production. The system's flexibility allows for the configuration of production with abstraction, meaning that the production resources participating in a specific production plan are only known in the online phase. The safety assurance process of such a system is complex and challenging. This work aims to assist the safety assurance when utilizing a highly flexible Plug & Produce concept that accepts instant logical and physical reconfiguration. In this work, we propose a concept for online hazard identification of Plug& Produce systems, the proposed concept, allows for the detection of hazards in the online phase and assists the safety assurance as it provides the hazard list of all possible executable alternatives of the abstract goals automatically. Further, it combines the safety-related information with the control logic allowing for safe planning of operations. The concept was validated with a manufacturing scenario that demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed concept.

The sustainable manufacturing represents a sustainable development model whose main objective is to minimize waste and pollution by promoting the extension of the useful life of materials through reuse, recovery, repair, and recycling. The importance of strategic decisions in industrial environments to achieve the circular economy is emphasized, highlighting the usefulness of multi-criteria methodologies. In this scenario, a multi-criteria model using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was developed to evaluate sustainable manufacturing strategies in the automotive industry, specifically in the painting section. Strategic alternatives included usingwater-based paints, robotization, and alternative energy sources to reduce resources and waste. The results obtained allowed the establishment of a classification for the sustainable manufacturing strategies to be applied in the painting section, helping the company to understand the impact of these measures in promoting sustainability. A sensitivity analysis of the results obtained through the AHP method was also performed, which allows us to understand the amplitudes of variation necessary for the positions to change.

Planning of charging stations is becoming increasingly prevalent. Consequently, it is of paramount importance to assess their impact on traffic flow and, subsequently, their optimal positioning. To identify these optimal positions, microscopic traffic flow simulations represent an efficacious tool. Different positions can be trialed until an optimal solution is identified. The open-source microscopic traffic flow simulation tool SUMO would be an optimal choice for this purpose, but does not yet offer the possibility of efficiently implementing charging stations in its traffic networks. As part of a current research project, a novel method for implementing charging stations at their real location within the SUMO environment is presented. Exemplary locations are selected in the German city of Essen.

In the context of the digitized and intellectualized transformation of ship pipe manufacturing enterprises, how to transform the massive multi-source heterogeneous data into knowledge and realize the reuse of manufacturing knowledge and experience in the ship pipe manufacturing workshop are the key to optimizing the allocation of workshop manufacturing resources. In order to solve the aforementioned issues, a knowledge graph-driven manufacturing resource recommendation method for ship pipe manufacturing workshops is proposed. Firstly, the correlation between multi-sources heterogeneous manufacturing data (device resources, manufacturing process of pipe, manufacturing orders) is analyzed and integrated. Then, a knowledge graph of manufacturing resources for the ship pipe manufacturing workshop is constructed. On this basis, a manufacturing resource recommendation method based on the Knowledge Graph Convolution Networks is proposed to recommend the device for orders in the ship pipe manufacturing workshop. Finally, a case study is implemented to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper advocates for Digital Twin (DT) technology as a pivotal solution to address the complexities of Complex Operations Environments (COEs). Recognizing the need for a thorough understanding of COEs and their DTs, a methodology is introduced to bridge existing gaps. Given the lack of a universal definition, the approach leverages the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to extract insights, facilitating the development of a comprehensive definition for COE and DT. The methodology integrates Ontology and Systems Modelling Language (SysML) to provide a semantic and conceptual model of COE and DT. Ontology enriches the semantic understanding, exploring existence and entity relationships, while SysML ensures clear and concise communication through standardized graphical representation. This paper aims to present a methodology to achieve a precise understanding of COEs and their corresponding DTs, providing a robust foundation for addressing operational complexities in dynamic environments.

Slender engineered structures are sensitive to unwanted vibration effects mainly due to their soft nature. With respect to physical laws, the response of the structure reaches different non-linear modes which depend on the ratio or difference of natural and excitation frequencies. The non-stationary response near the lock-in region is quasi-periodic in nature, with the frequency of beating varying with the change in distance from the locking interval. This property is naturally affected by the assumption of combined random and harmonic excitation. In the paper, several details that contribute to the probabilistic characteristics of the system on a slow time scale are described using partial amplitudes of the response. The problem is illustrated with a non-linear SDOF oscillator of the van der Pol type, where the additive excitation combines harmonic and random components. In the stochastic averaging method, the expression for the response is written in trigonometric form using partial amplitudes. The solution to the Fokker-Planck equation for the cross-PDF of the partial amplitudes is found using the Galerkin approximation.

An autonomous bicycle has been developed for repeatable active safety tests of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). For effective interaction with other test objects, precise bicycle trajectory tracking control is essential. The repetitive nature of these tests suggest an Iterative Learning Control (ILC) approach. In this paper, we present a design of an ILC controller tailored for the trajectory tracking problem of an autonomous bicycle. To illustrate the performance of the controller, simulations have been conducted.

In recent years, synthetic training data has proven its potential to overcome data scarcity as a major bottleneck in AI applications. Robotics benefits from this approach, as perceptual AI models can be trained safely and cost-effectively. However, it is impossible to fully reproduce reality, which results in a loss of performance when the models are applied to real-world data. To control the so-called sim-to-real gap, domain randomization is widely regarded as a solution. The variation of hard-to-control parameters, such as lighting conditions or object textures in the case of visual perception, forces models to focus on more robust shape-related information. Extensive research has been devoted to determining the appropriate level of randomization for computer vision models. Thereby, the availability of geometric object models is usually taken for granted. However, industrial practice shows that these models are often unavailable or incorrect. The effort required for geometric modelling correlates with model fidelity and can easily exceed the cost of actual synthetic data generation. To provide practical guidance, this paper investigates how the sim-to-real gap is influenced by model fidelity. In addition to conventional computer-aided design, 3D scans of real objects were considered as a cost-effective alternative for producing geometrically accurate models. The results indicate that high geometric model fidelity is not mandatory and that simplified models are a cost-effective alternative.

As a porous material, railway ballast has absorptive properties that are important for the noise produced by the railway system. To understand its acoustic behaviour, measurements are presented on 1:5 scale ballast. Following direct measurements of the flow resistivity and porosity, transfer function methods are used in a vertical impedance tube to determine the surface impedance and absorption coefficient of different depths of ballast. The complex wavenumber is determined through transfer function measurements within the medium in the vertical tube. The Johnson-Champoux-Allard model for porous materials is fitted to these measurements, allowing determination of the remaining parameters, thermal and viscous characteristic lengths and tortuosity. The parameters are finally adopted to predict the diffuse field absorption coefficient of the scale ballast and full-size ballast. These are compared with measurements, showing acceptable agreement.

This paper describes a research project to improve airport retail waste management, particularly in terms of waste segregation and effective processing according to current waste management practices. The Double Diamond design process was employed as the research methodology to identify and challenge these practices. On-site observations were conducted to begin the project by collecting data on the most recent airport waste management procedures and this was the demonstration of the Discover and problem identification phase of the Double Diamond methodology. Airports may apply this in the Develop and Delivery phases to boost recovery rates and handle waste more effectively and economically, lowering the waste transported to landfills or for incineration, and achieving their net-zero goals. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge on global waste management methods, especially in the aviation sector where little academic discourse exists on this issue. Practitioners can benefit from the Double Diamond's design structure to provide guidance for implementing and assessing airport waste management practices.
