In the realm of clinical practice, bone grafting has evolved to encompass the utilization of various types of grafts, including autogenous, allogeneic, and xenogeneic sources. Additionally, both natural and artificially synthesized materials such as polymers, bioceramics, and composite substances have been integrated into this process. However, these approaches often carry inherent limitations. To address these shortcomings, the concept of biomimetic scaffolds has emerged. These bone implants can assist in accelerating bone regeneration, similar to that of authentic tissue, which replicates the cellular environment within a living organism. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the diverse array of biomaterials utilized in these scaffolds, coupled with the methodologies employed in the fabrication of biomimetic scaffolds. Moreover, the discussion delves into the intricacies of the limitations posed by intelligent biomaterials.

To address the increasing complexity of product characteristics, demand fluctuations, and higher costs of raw materials, along with pressures for fast-er integration of decarbonized energy resources, manufacturing companies require flexible production systems. These systems should minimize waste, achieve faster cycle times, and deliver high-quality products to stay competitive. In this regard, Product Design-for-Excellence (DfX) principles have gained significant importance in recent years. DfX enables all management levels to perform quick and comprehensive design inputs and performance evaluations, leveraging product lifecycle management platforms. LeanDfX, a dedicated Lean approach for product development performance assessment, has been previously proposed. This work builds upon LeanDfX by presenting a multi-dimensional approach to support design and performance assessment of production systems throughout its lifecycle. This approach coherently integrates different production knowledge areas and strategic foundations (e.g., Lean Manufacturing, Strategic Aspects, Sustainability, and Circular Economy) for the effectiveness and efficiency evaluation of production systems. The research hypothesis revolves around the translational strategy of extending and transforming the LeanDfX methodology for application in production system design within factory operations. This new architecture is presented in the context of the European project RENEE, devoted to designing and deploying remanufacturing processes for a more sustainable, circular, and competitive industry.

The global electricity demand, volatile fossil fuel prices, and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are pushing power producers towards green energy sources, including renewable energy and nuclear technologies. Civil nuclear power generation is seen as a reliable contestant in the green energy race, with 437 nuclear power plants operable in 32 countries worldwide. This paper discusses the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's (KSA) efforts to meet its growing electricity demand and reduce its dependency on fossil fuels through the introduction of nuclear energy into its national energy mix. KSA's aims to achieve a renewable energy mix of 50% by 2030, including nuclear energy. The paper describes KSA's progress in developing its nuclear power infrastructure, including the establishment of the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KA-CARE) and the Saudi Nuclear Energy Holding Company (SNEHC). To achieve its goals, Saudi Arabia has followed the IAEA "Milestones Approach" and conducted the first Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) at KA-CARE headquarters in 2018, which showed that the country hasmade noteworthy progress in the development of its nuclear power infrastructure and is ready to invite bids or negotiate a contract for its first nuclear power plant. The paper emphasizes KSA's commitment to fulfilling international conventions and treaties related to nuclear power generation and its desire to achieve its VISION 2030 nuclear power generation targets.

This paper deals with the modeling of a soft sensor for detecting alpha'-martensite evolution from the micromagnetic signals that are measured during the reverse flow forming of metastable AISI 304L austenitic steel. This model can be prospectively used inside a closed-loop property-controlled flow forming process. To achieve this, optimization by means of a non-linear regression of experimental data was carried out. To collect the experimental data, specimens were produced by flow forming seamless tubes at room temperature. Using a combination of production parameters (like the infeed depth and feed rate), specimens with different alpha'-martensite contents and wall-thickness reductions were produced. An equation to compute alpha'-martensite from both specific production-process parameters and micromagnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) measurements was obtained using numerical methods. In this process, the behavior of the quantity of interest (namely, the alpha'-martensite content) was mathematically evaluated with respect to non-destructive MBN data and the feed rate that was used to produce the components. A combination of exponential and potential functions was defined as the ansatz functions of the model. The obtained model was validated online and offline during the real flow forming of workpieces, obtaining average deviations of up to 7% alpha'-martensite with respect to the model. The implementation of the soft sensor model for property-controlled production represents an important milestone for producing high-added value components on the basis of a well-understood process-microstructure-property relationship.

The current paper explores the possibilities of introducing a gesture control method to command and collaborate with robots. In the first part, aspects of the current limitations of tele-robotic systems and the communication models adopted in the industry are presented. As for the method used to detect hand gestures, it was selected a machine learning model and shrank to run on a conventional microcontroller. By leveraging machine learning techniques, the precision and repeatability of the gesture-based commands were significantly improved. In the final part of the paper, the implementation stages are presented alongside the results of the gesture detection model. The proposed solution not only enhances the efficiency of the tele-robotics systems but also paves the way for resource efficiency on microcontrollers. Furthermore, the paper presents practical applications according to industrial technologies. The adaptability and versatility of the developed model make it a promising candidate for a wide range of applications.

This paper studies a real world dedicated parallel machine scheduling problem with sequence dependent setups, different machine release dates and additional resources (PMSR). To solve this problem, two previously proposed models have been adapted and a novel objective function, the minimisation of the sum of the machine completion times, is proposed to reflect the real conditions of the manufacturing environment that motivates this work. One model follows the strip-packing approach and the other is time-indexed. The solutions obtained show that the new objective function provides a compact production schedule that allows the simultaneous minimisation of machine idle times and setup times. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of different models for solving PMSR problems in real-world contexts and gives directions for future research in this area using complementary approaches such as matheuristics.

In the paper, 1.06 mu m picosecond (ps) laser is employed to fabricate micro/nano surface textures on Al2024-T3 substrate. The effects of different laser parameters including laser fluence, repetition rate, scanning speed, pulse number, focal position, etc. on the topography, feature profile, feature dimensions of the induced surface textures have been studied. The optimum laser parameters have been identified and the uniform-distributed 2 scale micro-nano hierarchical bump array, sub-micron-ripple and micro-dimple array surface patterns are fabricated on the Al2024-T3 substrates. The laser textured Al2024-T3 sample shows stable super-hydrophobic property with a water contact angle (WCA) of more than 150 degree and contact angle hysteresis (CAH) of less than 10 degree. The mechanism involved in the process is discussed in terms of surface morphology and surface chemistry. The developed process has the potential to be applied in improving the performance of the Al-based components and/or products in terms of superhydrophobicity and easy cleaning.

In this study we develop a model that can predict the condensation heat transfer coefficient (HTC) during free fall condensation on vertical tube surfaces in the presence of non-condensable gases (NCG). The aim is to compile a comprehensive database that includes a wide range of geometric values and operating conditions. The study is specifically motivated by the need to establish a generalized model/correlations that can predict the condensation heat transfer performance of the passive containment cooling system used in nuclear power plants [1, 2]. This passive cooling system eliminates heat from the containment vessel in case of an accident by condensing water vapor with gravity-driven force. To develop the model, we used MATLAB's neural network toolbox to build an artificial neural network (ANN) model, specifically a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) network. The model predicts the HTC during the condensation process of two types of NCGs (air and nitrogen) as well as pure steam. The inclusion of pure steam data aims to improve the accuracy of predictions under conditions where light gases are present. The dataset used for the model was constructed from 1,613 data points obtained from various experimental sources. The input layer receives various parameters, including P-tot, Delta T-sub, W-nc, L, D-h. The output data is the condensation HTC. The input data was normalized by scaling each feature between the range of 0 to 1, whereas the output data was subjected to a transformation using the natural logarithm. The resulting machine learning model exhibited outstanding performance when predicting the condensation HTC. The findings of this study will represent a significant advancement in the analysis of large amounts of data from experiments and simulations, enabling the identification of complex patterns and relationships. The prediction of curve squeal is one of the most challenging problems especially in tramway applications, where the negotiation of very sharp curves often involves the presence of multiple contact points at wheel/rail interface. Curve squeal is generally attributed to the self-excited vibration of the wheel/rail system, which may occur due to the negative slope of the friction coefficient or due to the mode-coupling mechanism. The frequencies involved are usually the ones corresponding to the wheel modes of vibration, resulting in a strong, tonal and very annoying noise emission. Its occurrence is strictly related to the wheel/rail contact conditions, such as creepages, contact angle and friction coefficient. The purpose of this paper is to assess the role of the presence of double contact points at wheel/rail interface. The investigation is performed through a multibody simulation in time-domain and a frequency-domain predictive model capable to reproduce the linearized wheel/rail dynamics including the presence of multiple contact points between the wheel and the rail. It is shown how the presence of flange contact can alter the overall wheel/rail coupled system mobility, modifying the curve squeal occurrence as well as the wheel modes involved in the phenomenon.

This paper reports a numerical investigation of heat transfer decay characteristics in a plate channel with delta winglet vortex generator (DWVG) under the turbulent. The angle of attack of DWVG are investigated. Effects of geometry of vortex generator on heat transfer decay characteristics downstream of DWVG were carried out computationally at different Reynolds numbers. It was found that the Nusselt number increase with the increasing attack angle of the DWVG. The longitudinal vortex can transmit a long distance and decay continuously along the main stream, the longitudinal distance between the vortex generators is smaller than that of the distance of longitudinal vortex decay in order to ensure that the longitudinal vortex has a certain strength.
