This paper presents partial results of a study aimed at optimizing the selective laser melting (SLM) process applied to H13 tool steel. An experimental investigation was conducted to explore the influence of printing parameters, particularly the laser scanning strategy, on the mechanical properties of SLM-manufactured parts. To achieve this objective, eight experimental conditions with different scanning strategies were studied following an in-depth literature review. In this study, porosity and hardness were determined for parts printed using an SLM machine with two scanning strategies: a simple bidirectional approach and a chess pattern with four rotation angles 0 degrees, 45 degrees, 67 degrees, and 90 degrees for each.

A Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) is developed and evaluated for minimizing the vibrations of a three-story model building. A Magnetorheological (MR) damper is utilized in the building. Three sets of rules and two shapes of Membership Functions (MFs) are considered in this investigation. The story displacements, story accelerations, and inter-story drifts were employed to examine the controllers' effectiveness. The third rule set (R3) exhibited the best displacement, acceleration, and drift performance for the first and second stories, where the most significant reduction was achieved. Moreover, the second rule set (R2) achieved the most significant decrease in the story's drift and acceleration for the third story. A future study of additional input parameters and rulesets is recommended to optimize the controllers' performance.

To decarbonize supply chains, many countries have introduced carbon taxes, which levy taxes on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Carbon taxes are expected to reduce GHG emissions in supply chains by adding additional economic loads. In contrast, according to life cycle assessment, GHG emissions from material production can be recovered by recycling end-of-life (EOL) products since the GHG emissions for virgin material production are saved by using recycled materials. Thus, recycling contributes not only to reducing consumption of natural resources but also to reducing GHG emissions. To promote more environmentally friendly and economical recycling, one approach is a carbon tax refund based on the amount of recovered GHG emissions. Therefore, recyclers can obtain refunds of the carbon tax based on their recycled volume. This study models a reverse supply chain network with carbon tax refund determined by the material-based GHG emissions recovered through recycling EOL products. First, the reverse supply chain network is modelled to assess the GHG saving rate and cost using mathematical programming. The proposed bi-objective method determines the number of EOL products transported to recycling or disposal facilities to balance total GHG saving rate and cost. Next, the proposed design method is validated by numerical experiments. Finally, the effects by rate of carbon tax refund are examined.

In this paper, a three-dimensional model of a microchannel (MC) heat sink with different shape ribs in merging chambers (where the MCs are interrupted) is established. The effects of different shape ribs on the heat transfer performance of MC sinks are studied. The flow characteristics and heat transfer mechanism of MCs with different shape ribs in merging chambers are explained in details. By checking the average Nusselt number, the friction coefficient and the heat transfer enhancement factor of five different shape ribs (rectangular ribs, triangular ribs, diamond ribs, double-headed cylindrical ribs, and cylindrical ribs), it is concluded that the heat transfer performance of the diamond structure ribs is the best.

The rapid evolution of additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, has spurred the need to determine when this technology should be favored over conventional or subtractive manufacturing techniques. Selecting additive manufacturing for a given part hinges on its complexity, as it must offer an economic advantage over traditional manufacturing methods. This paper introduces a method for assessing the geometric complexity of parts intended for additive manufacturing. While the prevalent approach in most industries relies on surface area to volume ratio as an indicator of complexity, our study highlights its limitations and potential for misleading manufacturers. In response, we propose a novel method that leverages machining surface generation and scrap ratio to evaluate part complexity. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated through validation with real-world industrial parts and virtual manufacturing assessments, proving its superiority to the traditional surface area to volume ratio. One of the key advantages of our proposed method is its potential for automation, with the capability to analyze stereolithography (STL) files and estimate part complexity features. This automation has the potential to significantly reduce the cognitive load on additive manufacturing experts, making the technology more accessible and efficient. Overall, our research contributes to the critical decision-making process for selecting the most suitable manufacturing method, ensuring that additive manufacturing is chosen when it offers a distinct economic advantage driven by part complexity.

Sound source localization (SSL) is aimed at locating the source of a sound in a space and has been used for decades in many applications, such as robotics, room acoustic analysis, voice communication, and medicine. The main advantages of sound-based methods are their low cost, since they require only a set of microphones, and their high precision in sound source detection due to the possibility of sound penetration through barriers. Although SSL methods have been used in robotics in rescue missions and human-robot interaction, they have not been implemented yet in manufacturing environments, even though the advent of Industry 4.0 and 5.0 manufacturing sectors would benefit greatly from intelligent tools like SSL to make industrial areas smarter. In this paper, a new framework based on SSL is proposed to identify active sound sources like human operators, mobile robots, and machinery in the manufacturing area which can enhance the awareness of a multi-agent system. In our approach, the sound source is estimated through a source region location system based on a Convolutional LSTM method. To make the framework more realistic, a three-stage procedure is proposed, where in the first step only a human and a robot are considered, in the second scenario an asset is added, and in the final stage multiple sound sources are included in the workplace. The proposed framework can improve occupational safety and enhance the cooperation between a human and robot agents in an industrial system.

Numerical and analytical investigation of two-dimensional heat diffusion problem with heat source and periodic boundary conditions is done. Present problem is quasilinear problem. Because of the problem is nonlinear, theorem of Picard's successive approximation is used. Under certain conditions of natural regularity and consistency imposed on the input data, establish the existence, uniqness and constant dependence of the solution on the data using the generalized Fourier method. Implicit-finite difference is used as a numerical solution. Numerical and analytical results are so closed with each other.

The present article deals with the temporal linear stability analysis of plane Couette flow (PCF) in a horizontal fluid layer of depth d that overlies a porous layer of depth d(m). The maintenance of constant temperature difference between the upper and lower plates (T-L > T-U) along with the uniform movement of the upper plate with velocity U (in other words, Couette flow) introduces the mixed convection in the system. The Darcy-Brinkman model governs the flow of the Newtonian and incompressible fluid in the highly porous layer. The Chebyshev spectral collocation method aids in solving the generalized eigenvalue problem, which in turn helps to analyse the impact of the depth ratio ((d) over cap), the Reynolds number (Re) and the Prandlt number (Pr) on the instability of the system. The fluid overlying porous geometry introduces more than a single lobe along the neutral stability curves plotted for porous Rayleigh number (Ra-m) versus porous wavenumber (a(m)), which gives rise to the unimodal and bimodal nature along the curves. The porous (fluid) mode correlates with the lobe of neutral curves with low (high) oscillatory frequency and causes instability therein. Consideration of two different values of porosity (phi) 0.3 and 0.78 for the Darcy and Darcy-Brinkman model assist to compare the stability results between the two models. The analysis indicates substantial differences between the models in terms of early/later appearance of instability as well as the modal behavior of the neutral stability curves.

Abo Akademi University (AAU) is researching a passive radiative cooling (PRC) skylight window prototype utilizing greenhouse gases (GHGs) that interact strongly with thermal radiation. The first prototype achieved 100 W/m(2) passive cooling using two ZnS windows, one at the bottom and one at the top, both transparent to long-wave (LW) infrared, and a central window. The aim of this ongoing work is to improve the skylight design by utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software (Ansys Fluent). The objective of this design improvement is to eliminate the usage of central window used in the earlier design. In this improved design, sections of ZnS glass are positioned symmetrically, at the top and at the bottom. The remaining window is composed of conventional window glass, while the side walls are made of wood. Another objective entails using various greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and NH3, inside the skylight and subsequently calculating the transmittive radiative fluxes within the atmospheric window (814 mu m) wavelength range, followed by a comparative analysis with using air. Thus far, the radiative heat fluxes achieved with the new skylight design are as follows: 85.5 W/m(2) when CO2 is used as the participating medium, 83.0 W/m(2) with air, and 88.5 W/m(2) when NH3 is used. Additionally, temperatures of the ZnS Cleartran glasses give a calculated lowering of approximately 3 to 4 degrees C in comparison to the ambient temperature. The ultimate aim is to develop a transparent PRC skylight with a net cooling capacity >> 100 W/m(2) without moving parts also during daytime.

This paper introduces a simplified numerical approach to simulate induction heating, with the aim to be applied in modern induction cooking methods. This novel method combines the Biot-Savart law and the Coulomb-gauged potential equations in frequency domain, so that both eddy currents and heat sources can be calculated for ferromagnetic materials in alternating magnetic fields. Validation of the method consisted of three different numerical tests with different coil arrangements and frequencies, which showcased the robustness of the method, offering future insights for efficient and versatile cooking appliance design. These tests provided the expected maximum temperature according to the industry standards.
