Force and moment measurement within road vehicles plays a break-through role in automotive engineering. Both wheel force transducers and instrumented hub carriers are considered in the paper. Both technologies have advantages and disadvantages. Active safety systems (ABS, ESP, up to full automated driving) are expected to be impacted by the measurement of forces and moments at the wheels. Friction potential evaluation and driver model development and monitoring are major field of research. Force and moment measurement technology may also be exploited for lightweight construction purposes. Promising technologies are the ones that don't need RF data transfer, providing low latency for data transfer and are resiliency against cyber-attacks.

Path planning algorithms are utilized in various fields to improve the efficiency of the defined tasks. Regarding extrusion based additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, an optimized path performs the same task in less time with higher surface quality and better mechanical properties. This paper proposes a continuous path planning algorithm for decreased manufacturing time and better surface quality of artifacts fabricated via extrusion-based AM. It is a versatile path-planning algorithm developed on Hierholzer's algorithm for directed graphs. It generates a continuous path for any given graph representing the infill pattern of the parts to be fabricated via material extrusion. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with respect to the conventional Hierholzer's algorithm and other similar algorithms over various cases. In the literature, complete elimination of u-turns is not observed so that the novelty of this work is to attain a continuous path planning algorithm that can eliminate both fast travels and u-turns. In addition to the advantages of continuous paths, the proposed method results in better surface quality due to its ability to omit u-turns during travel. The algorithm may also be used in laser-based AM technologies or any area coverage applications.

In autonomous driving systems, motion planning to reach a given destination while avoiding obstacles becomes a task entirely managed by the on-board unit. In this work, we present a rule-defined motion planning algorithm for autonomous driving applications based on an adaptive Model Predictive Controller (MPC) framework. The motion planning task is first formulated as an Optimal Control Problem (OCP) subject to time-varying Control Barrier Function (CBF) constraints. It is then integrated within an MPC framework with adaptive weights settings, enabling the algorithm to dynamically adjust the MPC weights according to the rule-defined driving scenarios. The developed motion planner generates optimized trajectories for a high-fidelity Autonomous Vehicle (AV) model within IPG CarMaker software. Simulations performed showed that the developed motion planner adeptly facilitates successful overtaking, following, and stopping of the AV behind the Obstacle Vehicle (OV) based on rule-defined scenarios perceived by the AV.

Industry has a key role in leading the digital and green transitions for the economic and societal transformations that we are experiencing. The approach towards a sustainable, human-centric, and resilient European industry, so-called Industry 5.0, complements the existing "Industry 4.0" approach by focusing on a circular, human-oriented, and durable industry. Thus, industrial systems need to have a focus shift from technology to human so that technology will serve human and not vice versa. In this way, human play a central role between technology and organizations. This paper seeks the challenge of this focus shift and how lean thinking and practicing soft lean tools such as Toyota Kata may contribute to the development of a human-centric approach in the industry. A literature review was conducted to answer these questions, and a conceptual modified Toyota Kata methodology, the so-called Human-centric Kata, was suggested to assist industry in reaching its goals towards a human-centric green-digital era.

Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell directly converts the chemical energy of the fuel into electrical energy thus providing higher energy conversion efficiency. Liquid water causes flooding in the Gas Diffusion Layer, Catalyst Layer as well as in channels due to which the active catalyst surface area in the CL reduces and hence the reaction rate reduces. Phase transfer between liquid water and water vapour along with electro-osmotic drag and reverse diffusion through the membrane, are the factors influencing liquid water buildup in the domains. In the present work a three dimensional, non-isothermal, two phase numerical model incorporating cathode and anode domains for studying water distribution is developed. Water formation and distribution across the domain are studied using the mixed flow distributor. The developed numerical model is validated by comparing the polarization curve with the experimental results. The study shows that the ohmic region in the polarization curve increases and the concentration losses decrease due to the use of pure oxygen at inlet which can be important for applications such as in spacecrafts. The effects of liquid water accumulation in the domain on the reactant transport, current density and temperature distribution are also investigated.

Canadian Deuterium Uranium Nuclear reactors (CANDU) form an essential power generation source for Canada and a multitude of European countries. CANDU reactors are characterised by their use of deuterium oxide as coolant as opposed to conventional light water of carbon dioxide coolants used in most nuclear reactors. However, CANDU reactors suffer from deuterium oxide radiolysis - the splitting of coolant to deuterium and oxygen gas. This poses a major threat to the safe and economic operation of CANDU reactors over their lifetime. Hence, clear separation and recombining process of deuterium and oxygen back to deuterium oxide is essential. In light of this, this research paper proposes the first theoretical models of deuterium oxide and the deuterium oxide + oxygen + deuterium mixture present in CANDU reactors. The models of the pure components and mixtures were devised using the SAFTVR - Mie equation of state along with computational techniques to estimate the parameters required by the equation of state to generate the complete pure and mixture models. The models are used to predict crucial physical properties of deuterium oxide and the vapour-liquid mixture under standard operating conditions as well as CANDU operating conditions. The devised models demonstrate excellent accuracy, providing < 5% AAD for the pure deuterium oxide, oxygen and deuterium models as well as the mixture system. The aim of the devised models is to be used in shortlisting the possible separation and recombining techniques.

In this paper, the previously presented theoretical equations governing the utilization of a new sensor to measures peening intensity will be expanded to include the effect of impingement angle. The equations are derived from the Impulse-Momentum principle and use the input velocity, the coefficient of restitution, the media particle mass and the impact impulse time to determine the maximum impact force at any angle. The equations are verified with results from experimental testing at impingement angles of 85 degrees, 65 degrees, 55 degrees, 45 degrees and 35 degrees at five different input velocities using AWCR28 media propelled from a Shockform designed single particle cannon. Results show that for all angles, the sensor output offers a good linear correlation with the input velocity. The sensor can be used to assess the quality of the particle stream when peening at different angles and with different media flow rates. Examples of sensor output graphs will be presented showing how collisions between incoming and outgoing media particles can affect the distribution of impacts on a part.

The stamping process plays a key role in several industries, namely the automotive industry. Although high strength steels have shown excellent mechanical properties, there are drawbacks related to their formability, which are associated with the appearance of defects that compromise product quality. These materials can show unpredictable responses due to variations in their chemical composition, heat treatment, and processing parameters. The main objective of this work is to identify and eliminate cracks that occur during the stamping process of metallic materials using experimental techniques. This analysis is carried out using bending tests to discover the optimum stamping conditions that maximize the performance of the materials by using Design of Experiments. As a result of the analysis the best material and stamping conditions were defined.

Purpose - Scrum is a framework born in the software development industry and has recently been used in other organizations and departments. This research assesses how the scrum framework has been applied for continuous improvement and innovation in fields other than the Information Technology (IT) industry or department. Study Design/Methodology/Approach - A Systematic Review of the Literature methodology was developed using two databases (ProQuest and Scopus). From an initial set of 2,900 publications, 395 articles passed the exclusion criteria and were included in this research. Information such as scrum area or field application, authors' name, authors' affiliation, publication year, and journal name were collected and used to conduct several bibliometric analyses. Findings - Results indicated that scrum can be used for continuous improvement and innovation in fields other than the IT industry or department. Scrum is mainly applied to change a process completely to address a problem or to update a process to improve indicators in different industrial sectors, such as medical, automotive, educational, and construction. Originality - Scrum is a recent framework that offers considerable potential for future research, and this paper highlights the fields in which it can be specialized. This investigation proves that scrum is highly flexible and guarantees success and improvement in most cases.

The advancement of metal forming techniques and procedures has been notably impacted by the integration of state-of-the-art tools, specifically within the extensive realm of FE simulations for numerical analysis. Obtaining precise numerical representations of material behavior throughout the forming process is crucial to ensure the reliability and excellence of the resultant outcomes. It is imperative to precisely characterize and determine the material attributes under examination and subsequently translate them into numerical material models. The development of steel matrix composite with TiB2 reinforcement requires a thorough insight of how they respond to loading conditions variation. This comprehension is essential for their mechanical characteristics modeling and their malleability prediction. This work unveils the inaugural application of an elasto-plastic material with a 12% ceramic reinforcement volume ratio, undergoing a Deep-drawing operation. The numerical simulation is conducted using Abaqus/Standard through the UMAT subroutine. The aim is to estimate the influence of specific procedural variables, namely the space between the die and the punch, the initial blank thickness, and the friction coefficient between the workpiece and the forming tool, to comprehend the deformation mechanics and the consequent influence of procedural variables. This analysis offers valuable insights into how these three procedural variables can be manipulated to improve the produced component quality and achieve enhanced malleability throughout the Deep-drawing operation.
