In order to describe fracture behavior in structural materials, this research investigates the effectiveness of the phase-field technique, concentrating on the Phase Field Cohesive Zone model (PF-CZM). Using COMSOL Multiphysics, a bar under uniaxial traction has been simulated with the linear model AT1, the non-linear model AT2, and the cohesive model. Numerical results show that PF-CZM can provide a more realistic representation of material behavior, where deformations can propagate progressively before eventual failure.

The study focuses on evaluating the influence of the overhang of the tool holder used on the surface quality, defined by the surface topography of the machined surface. The tests were carried out on samples made of Inconel 718 material in the form of a sleeve, under finish turning conditions with constant cutting parameters. Themachinedmaterialwas subjected to heat treatment, including solution treatment and precipitation hardening, as a result of which it obtained a hardness of 45 +/- 2HRC. Two types of lathe tool holders with overhangs of 120mm and 700 mm were used. These holders are dedicated to turning external surfaces and holes, respectively. V-shaped cutting inserts from five different tool manufacturers, made of fine-grained carbide and coated with PVD and CVD coatings, were used for the tests. The value of the obtained surface stereometry parameters was evaluated. On the basis of the conducted research, it was found that the quality of the machined surface, assessed by the 3D roughness parameters, is affected by the type of the tool holder used. The obtained results show that, when considering the obtained surface topography, it should be noted that not only the type of the cutting insert coating, but also the nature of its wear has a significant impact, especially when a long cutting path is required.

The site selection for a nuclear reactor is a crucial safety and security activity with escalating demands. The prospect of using seismic data to estimate the operational behavior of the nuclear reactor is intriguing. Visualization and analysis of continuous data recorded at a seismic station away from the reactor site can be helpful in this regard. In this work, we investigate the potential for inferring the impact of an operational reactor from seismic data acquisition. The obtained data exhibit an apparent relationship between seismic features and reactor primary operational frequency. The short-time frequency transform is utilized to analyze the frequency components. The outcomes are helpful in choosing the potential nuclear reactor site in an oil and gas-rich region.

3D object detection from monocular camera videos constitutes a critical research domain. Achieving robust 3D object detection in databases lacking annotated information poses a highly challenging task. This paper proposes a simple yet effective transfer learning approach, integrating data alignment, 3D object detection, and dynamic result correction. Vanishing point detection is employed to infer camera angles in diverse scenes, and preprocessing of new data is conducted by considering the camera's pitch angle and vanishing point position. Subsequently, MonoDETR are applied for depth estimation and 3D object detection in monocular videos. Building upon the detection results, dynamic correction is achieved through inter-frame assistance, culminating in the final 3D object information. Validation on the TUAT Near-Miss Incident Database demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed approach. The results indicate a substantial reduction in the cost of annotating new domain data while simultaneously enhancing detection accuracy and robustness. Integration with onboard diagnostics (OBD) data allows the reconstruction of information about various traffic participants in hazardous scenarios, providing valuable insights for in-depth analysis of accident causes.

P2 resonance affects irregular wear of wheel and rail profiles, which are the main source of noise and vibration in railway operations. The vibrations of multiple wheels and track coupled systems are investigated, and the natural frequencies and mode shapes are determined by solving the characteristic equation with Green's function and Laplace transform. The proposed method provides the basis for further studies on irregular wear of contact surfaces, such as rail corrugation and wheel out-of-roundness, and for measures to mitigate ground vibration in railway operations.

Flexible manufacturing systems in high-mix low-volume segments offer many challenges in terms of planning and scheduling. The complexity of these systems often requires a systemic approach for which humans are the perfect actors. However, computer systems can support scheduling tasks more effectively due to their capacity to synthesize large amounts of data. This paper describes a system developed for the flexible manufacturing of wooden doors with a wide range of product configurations. This paper proposes a rule-based scheduling method for high-mix production. The method was applied and validated at a wooden door producer. Based on the company's production schedule for a given week, a scheduling program was developed that suggested minor rearrangements for production leveling. As the rule-based approach makes the decisions verifiable, the program was validated at the producer, through a case study of production leveling under volume constraints. The results include the complete elimination of changeovers and the stabilization of throughput, which improved the precision of the delivery time. The producer is integrating the program into their production planning and control system. Thus, the results suggest that the proposed method can be useful for scheduling high-mix low-volume production, and merits further validation in similar environments.

The purpose of this paper is to present the neutronic analysis of the AP1000 reactor prepared by using OpenMC code. The principle of the code mentioned above is based on the Monte Carlo methods. Research included determining the neutron effective multiplication factor, analyzing of the evolution of fuel composition during the reactor's operation, and verifying the effects of the boric acid in the coolant based on the parameters mentioned above. The final part of the paper is a summary which includes the conclusion of the analysis. The experiments confirmed the effectiveness of using OpenMC code for similar neutron-physics analyses. The yielded results overlap with experimental and literature data, indicating that a high level of consistency has been achieved.

Slender boring bars are susceptible to cutting process-induced vibrations that can result in large amplitude chatter vibrations. Chatter can damage the workpiece and the tool if not suppressed. This paper proposes a solution to damp boring bar vibrations by integrating an impact damper within the boring bar. The system consists of a mass that collides with the bar to be damped and absorbs its vibrational energy through momentum exchanges. We present an analytical model to characterize the influence of the role of the gap between the impacting mass and the main system and to investigate the role of impacting interface characteristics. Such model-based analysis is the main aim and new technical contribution of this paper. The bar is modeled as an Euler-Bernoulli beam with a ball-like mass assumed placed inside a hollow cavity of the boring bar. Impacting interfaces are modeled using a stiffness and viscous damper system. Governing equations are obtained by applying the extended Hamilton's principle. Our analysis suggests that the bar's response reduces when the interface damping is larger than that of the boring bar's whereas when the interface stiffness is larger than that of the boring bar's modal stiffness, there is a slight increase in response. For large interface damping, the gap is found to play a significant role, and no role when the interface damping is low. Since our model is generalized, it can be used to perform such an optimization that can in turn guide prototyping for experimental validation.

Intensity is an indirect quantification of the kinetic energy in the air-media stream through the usage of Almen strips in shot peening. However, intensity does not give an insight to the energy transferred into the material nor the compressive residual stress (CRS) on different materials. Previous studies have been done on individual materials but few serve to investigate and compare across materials. In this study, the effect of Shot Peening on common aerospace materials Al7075T6, IN718, SUS304 and Ti-6Al-4 V were investigated to assess residual stress distribution and other material properties such as hardness across different material properties for the same peening intensity. Through this work, the authors aim to elucidate the mechanism of differences in residual stress distribution by establishing a relationship with the different material properties studied. Specimens were shot peened using ASR70 media, while residual stress and hardness measurements were conducted at various depths thereafter. It was found that the variation in prepeened material hardness from all materials does not correlate to obtaining higher work hardening and deeper residual stresses under the same shot peening intensity and coverage. Among the materials studied, Al7075-T6, the softest, exhibited the highest post-peening surface roughness, but showed limited work hardening and induced residual stresses. In contrast, Ti-6Al-4 V, the hardest material, demonstrated the lowest post-peening surface roughness, with relatively minor work hardening and residual stresses compared to Inconel 718 and SS304. These differences can be attributed to the distinctive material properties and microstructure, leading to varying deformation behavior when subjected to cold work processes like shot peening.

Presently, enterprises are forced to constantly development through the setting of new goals, as well as adapting to the changing surrounding conditions and uncovering in these changes new chances for their activity. Corporations and their surrounding are becoming more dynamic and complex. As a result, it leads to an increase in the risk of made decisions. The methods proposed in the literature refer only to single issues, supposing the occurrence of suitable conditions, which, at the same time, results in limitations in a given field. In the article, the risk of the production system is defined as the degree of its sensitivity to troubles, expressed as not achieving planned results in a given period under offered conditions. In practice - it conveys the analysis of the influence of other factors on specific parameters of the production process. Presented the article analysis and the risk of production processes judgment examines the impact of individual aspects generating the disturbances in the production process. Conducted critique of the production process risk allows the identification of the elements having the most impact on hazard not performing established finished product sales plan. Moreover, it also lets to state the time necessary to realize of this sales program.
