Aerodynamic noise is generated by interaction of the air flow with an object and by the turbulent flow itself. In railways it becomes a significant noise source for speeds above 250 kph and major areas of noise generation on (high speed) trains are the train head, the leading and second bogie, the pantograph and the gaps between coaches. This paper presents a numerical simulation approach based on CFD/CAA techniques aiming to estimate equivalent sources for aerodynamic noise of different components of SNCF's TGV high speed trains. The approach is based on an unsteady DES flow simulation combined with the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkins (FW-H) analogy for the acoustic part. In order to develop the method a symmetric and full model are implemented and the leading bogie was selected as an application case. Results of this simulation, in terms of sound power and directivity, are already used by SNCF noise experts in order to estimate pass-by noise levels of TGV high speed trains. In the future other noise source will be simulated and mitigation devices such as deflectors will be tested numerically.

Numerical and analytical investigation of two-dimensional heat diffusion problem with heat source and periodic boundary conditions is done. Present problem is quasilinear problem. Because of the problem is nonlinear, theorem of Picard's successive approximation is used. Under certain conditions of natural regularity and consistency imposed on the input data, establish the existence, uniqness and constant dependence of the solution on the data using the generalized Fourier method. Implicit-finite difference is used as a numerical solution. Numerical and analytical results are so closed with each other.

Sound source localization (SSL) is aimed at locating the source of a sound in a space and has been used for decades in many applications, such as robotics, room acoustic analysis, voice communication, and medicine. The main advantages of sound-based methods are their low cost, since they require only a set of microphones, and their high precision in sound source detection due to the possibility of sound penetration through barriers. Although SSL methods have been used in robotics in rescue missions and human-robot interaction, they have not been implemented yet in manufacturing environments, even though the advent of Industry 4.0 and 5.0 manufacturing sectors would benefit greatly from intelligent tools like SSL to make industrial areas smarter. In this paper, a new framework based on SSL is proposed to identify active sound sources like human operators, mobile robots, and machinery in the manufacturing area which can enhance the awareness of a multi-agent system. In our approach, the sound source is estimated through a source region location system based on a Convolutional LSTM method. To make the framework more realistic, a three-stage procedure is proposed, where in the first step only a human and a robot are considered, in the second scenario an asset is added, and in the final stage multiple sound sources are included in the workplace. The proposed framework can improve occupational safety and enhance the cooperation between a human and robot agents in an industrial system.

Nuclear system analysis codes must demonstrate their capabilities in order to be licensed for usage in the design and safety analysis of nuclear power plant. The Safety and Performance Analysis CodE (SPACE) has been developed and approved to be used for licensing applications of Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs). However, since new innovative designs such as SMART100, a 100 MWe system-integrated modular advanced reactor, incorporate inherent and passive safety features that are not used in conventional loop-type reactors, special models should be developed and validated to reflect the characteristics of the SMART-100 and obtain reliable predictions. A thermal-hydraulic integral effect test facility, SMART-ITL, was constructed to evaluate the system performance of SMART-100 and investigate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena that occur in the reactor systems and components under normal, abnormal, and emergency conditions. The experimental data also serves to validate the related thermal-hydraulic models of the safety analysis codes. This study presents a validation of the SPACE code, using the SMART-ITL facility, to evaluate its applicability for analyzing thermal hydraulics in integral reactors. Simulations were performed for two experimental test scenarios: pressurizer safety valve break and safety injection line break concurrent with total loss of secondary heat removal (TLOSHR). The validation results indicate that the SPACE code accurately predicted key thermal hydraulic behaviors, such as primary and secondary system pressures and temperatures. However, a slight underestimation of the RPV's water level was observed, attributed mainly to the overestimation of the accumulated break flow due to inaccuracies in the two-phase critical flow models.

The current globalization faces environmental and social challenges in lean manufacturing processes while simultaneously ensuring a sustainable evolution, even though there is a high margin in the lean approach. To deal with this challenge, this research aims to investigate some of the main extended versions of lean techniques such as sustainable (Sus-VSM) and environmental value stream mapping (E-VSM) simultaneously integrating them with lifecycle assessment (LCA) principles for better comparative analysis of environmental performance due to an indefinite number of approaches to evaluate sustainability. Moreover, the research tries to identify tradeoff methods of environmental, economic, and social indicators in the lean E/Sus-VSM tool for better decision-making, whereas there is no common suggested method. For this purpose, the method for the project initiates a search and a literature review of scientific sources to find which features of LCA are integrated with different E/Sus-VSMs and what tools are used in balanced decision-making by using the matrix table. The results are that many elements or similar steps of LCA are used in E/Sus-VSMs and the tradeoff tools to make decisions are various or new approaches are emerging. Finally, a conclusion is made for identifying and suggesting further research and limitations.

The digitalization of factories has triggered a humongous number of applications of Machine Learning techniques to optimize manufacturing processes. In the last years, different methodologies have been suggested for tasks like predictive maintenance, defect detection, or advanced perception systems that might contribute to a better performance of entire production lines optimizing their different steps. However, one of the main issues for the deployment of these technologies in real manufacturing environments is the management of complex tools that need, in many cases, specific AI-related knowledge from workers that are not used to work with AI-based systems. In this work we present a set of tools for defect detection tasks within a real factory based on deep learning methods and we demonstrate their performance as parts of different quality control systems. In addition, to integrate all these tools, we introduce MINT a modular intelligent framework for deep learning model management. MINT uses active learning to learn efficiently from limited labeled data, allowing manufacturers to optimize production processes with higher accuracy and reduced data annotation efforts. This framework makes more accessible to non-experts steps like model training,performance evaluation and model traceability while providing an explainability module for classification models that encourage trust and adoption of AI between factory workers. Meaning that our tool contributes to the deployment of AI techniques in real manufacturing scenarios making more accessible the management of the entire life cycle of AI models.

The trend in semi-conductor manufacturing methodology is increasingly focused on accommodating the diverse chip structures designed by multiple integrated circuit (IC) designers over the past few decades. The chemical and physical properties during silicon fabrication vary tremendously among versatile IC products at the nanometer-scale. For example, many carefully designed heuristic repetitive operations on wafers of varying pattern densities are necessary during chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) to ensure wafer quality, but this can negatively impact wafer throughput. In this study, artificial intelligence (AI) is used to manipulate the complex semi-conductor manufacturing for high wafer quality and quantity. One innovative approach involves hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) coupled with deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), applied to CMP process control. This method is compared to the traditional run-to-run exponentially weighted average (RtR-EWMA) controller. The simulation results demonstrate a notable enhancement of more than 10% in semi-conductor FAB production efficiency.

The advent of autonomous racing events, such as Formula Student Driverless Cup, requires online motion planning algorithms that push the vehicle to its limits while ensuring vehicle stability and preventing road departure. A popular method to find the optimal control input to drive at the limits of the car is Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC). However, when NMPC is used, often a trade-off has to be made between performance, accuracy, and computational complexity. In this manuscript, the principle of cascading different vehicle models is used to construct the prediction horizon. Initially, a two-track model optimizes steering and motor input, utilizing torque vectoring benefits. The horizon is then extended with a single-track model, and a lower fidelity point mass model, effectively reducing computational complexity. Furthermore, by adopting a curvilinear reference frame, a transformation towards the spatial domain is obtained, which allows us to use time as an optimization variable. A simulation study is performed for varying prediction horizon lengths which show the advantages of the cascaded vehicle model, achieving an 86% reduction in computation time with comparable lap times.

Diabetic foot is a complication that carries a considerable risk in diabetic patients. The consequent loss of protective sensitivity in the lower limbs requires an early diagnosis due to the imminent possibility of ulceration or amputation of the affected limb. To assess the loss of protective sensitivity, the 10 gf Semmes-Weinstein (SW) monofilament is the most used first-line procedure. However, the used device is most often non-calibrated and its feedback can lead to decision errors. In this paper we present an equipment that is able to automatically conduct a metrological verification and evaluation of the 10 gf SW monofilament in the assessment of the loss of protective sensitivity. Additionally, the proposed equipment is able to simulate the practicioner's procedure, or can be used for training purposes, providing force-feedback information. After calibration, displacement vs. buckling force contours were plotted for three distinct monofilaments, confirming then ability of the equipment to provide fast, detailed and precise information.

A study is presented into the sensitivity of rolling noise to design changes in a two-stage baseplate rail fastening system. The focus is on the influence on the rolling noise of three parameters of the fastening system: the stiffnesses of the railpad and the baseplate pad and the thickness of the baseplate that determines its mass and sound radiation ratio. The TWINS model is adapted by introducing the baseplate vibration and sound radiation using results from an experimentally verified 2.5D finite element model. Based on the simulations, an optimum railpad stiffness is identified of around 500 MN/m, based on a baseplate pad stiffness value of 80 MN/m. The thickness of the baseplate has only a small effect on the total rolling noise.
