The growing demand for electric vehicles exacerbates concerns over the environmental implications of lithium-ion battery waste, which poses risks to both ecological systems and public health. While remanufacturing has been acknowledged as a viable, sustainable pathway for mitigating these issues, existing literature lacks a comprehensive investigation into the role of Industry 5.0 technologies in optimising this process. To achieve this goal, this study compares and evaluates the potential of different Industry 5.0 technologies and approaches to support the remanufacturing process of lithium-ion batteries. Specifically, we apply the AHP-PROMETHEE method to identify the most critical and influential Industry 5.0 prospects that should be prioritised for development and implementation. The novelty of our approach lies in the identification of critical Industry 5.0 imperatives that can enable efficient and effective remanufacturing processes. The analysis is supported by a comprehensive review of the relevant literature. The results of our study provide important implications for policymakers, battery manufacturers, and remanufacturing companies. By prioritising key Industry 5.0 technologies like digital twins, the Internet of Everything, and blockchain, this study shows that carmakers can significantly improve efficiency and sustainability in battery remanufacturing. This paper contributes to the emerging research on the integration of Industry 5.0 technologies in the remanufacturing process of lithium-ion batteries. Our next step is to explore the potential of the identified technologies in real-life applications and to evaluate their impact on the sustainability and efficiency of the remanufacturing process of lithium-ion batteries.

This paper presents an extensive investigation into the modeling and analysis of a piezoelectric bimorph cantilevered beam designed for vibration energy harvesting. By employing finite element analysis (FEA), the study explores various beam models, encompassing 1D Euler-Bernoulli, 2D, and 3D representations, to determine the eigenfrequencies and electromechanical responses of the energy harvester. The research includes a comparative analysis, which contrasts the results obtained from the proposed FE models with the experimental findings of Erturk and Inman, as well as analytical solutions. The results reveal that the 3D model exhibits minimal error. Additionally, using the 3D model, this work investigates the influence of tip mass shape on the electromechanical response of the system, suggesting that a parallelepiped shape maximizes voltage output while maintaining a lower resonant frequency.

Turbulent heat transfer is an extremely complex phenomenon and is critical in scientific and industrial applications. It becomes much more challenging in a buoyancy-influenced flow regime, particularly for non-unity Prandtl number (Pr) fluids. In this article, an effort has been put forward to assess the prediction capabilities of different Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) based turbulence models for a mixed convection flow regime. In this regard, a mixed convection flow in a channel is considered for three different Richardson numbers (Ri = 0.25, 0.5, and 1). The considered flow configuration is a parallel plate arrangement with differentially heated sidewalls. Two different turbulent heat flux models are compared with the available reference Direct Numerical Simulation database. The prediction capabilities for these modeling approaches are assessed and will be extensively discussed in this paper.

Radiation detectors are essential for upholding nuclear security and safety. The main objective of this study is to design and develop a new radiation detection system that can locate the position of a radioactive source using Geiger-Muller (GM) detectors. Three GM detectors are utilized in this system, with their relative angles known. The system collects data on radiation exposure levels in the immediate area surrounding the GM detectors and sends it to a Raspberry Pi 4 processor. After that, a MATLAB algorithm analyzes the data using localization methods to determine the source direction. To provide a user-friendly experience when using the system, a graphical user interface (GUI) was designed and implemented to be used with the system. The benefit of the localization methods that can be applied with MATLAB algorithms is that they offer great accuracy, rapid response, and low cost. The methods can be applied in fields like environmental monitoring, homeland security, and nuclear power plant safety, in addition to locating lost radioactive materials and other radiation security and safety concerns. An experimental setup is prepared to test the radiation detection system in a laboratory environment. A Cs-137-point source was used to study the system response. The results show that the system can detect a point source accurately when the source is stationary, while the location is not as accurate while the source is moving.

Refinements to a mathematical model of human drivers' steering control incorporating driver learning are reported. State estimation and realistic sensorimotor noise sources are introduced to the driver model to better represent neural processes. It is found that the driver model exhibits the expected learning behaviour in terms of estimation and control performance. Further work is planned to validate the model experimentally.

Modern companies rely heavily on industrial equipment, ensuring by this way their operation under optimal conditions is paramount. Industrial maintenance significantly contributes when management adopts an aiming loss reduction philosophy. Maintenance's primary purpose is the organisation of the information to implement in the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and analyse storage costs of spare parts, aiming to lower the number and cost of spare parts in the warehouse. Moreover, it improves effectiveness and efficiency without losing the quality of the service. The developed work focused on creating a framework to analyse and implement internal procedures, storage, and technical support for a warehouse management model of spare parts. The main objective was to analyse existing material through screening, identification, study and removal of obsolete spare parts, promoting the reduction of losses and continuous improvement. To validate the model, 27 pieces of equipment out of 191 were analysed and, 200 spare parts references from the maintenance warehouse were associated with the respective equipment.

Image-Based Incremental Learning for Part Recognition of Used Automotive Cores in Reverse Logistics 1

This paper presents a study on image-based incremental learning for part recognition of used automotive parts, also known as cores. The use of Machine Learning (ML) in the recognition of used parts has proven to be effective in suggesting Original Equipment Number (OEN) based on images and logistics data of a core. This leads to a four-eye process where the worker and ML interact through an assistance system. In reverse logistics, the spectrum of parts handled is constantly changing, making it difficult to have a "complete" image or sensor-based data set. The study focuses on the ramp-up phase of an ML implementation project in a real-world automotive core sorting station. There are two stations equipped with sensors such as RGB cameras. The sorted parts were acquired over a period of one year. Incremental learning was employed to cope with the growing dataset and the growing number of classes to be identified without retraining a model from scratch. Open source and state-of-the-art incremental ML learning methods such as POD-Net and Foster were tested against the common joint training approach used for most benchmarks in computer vision. The best-fitting open-source method for this problem was identified as POD-Net used with a self-supervised pretrained ResNet50. For the ramp-up of an ML-based core recognition a combination of incremental learning and joint training was found to be useful. It starts learning from a small number of digitized parts (14 classes), while maintaining a high recognition accuracy rate throughout the year, with a final class count of 100 (an increase of approx. 600%), which is a subset of a real application problem. The results of this study show that the proposed method is efficient, plastic, and energy-saving. Thus, it is a promising approach for the recognition of used automotive parts.

Shot peening is a common surface treatment technique used to improve the fatigue life of aerospace materials such as Titanium-64. However, shot peening increases the surface roughness of the part and hence, an additional vibratory polishing process is usually employed as a post-treatment step to reduce the surface roughness. Unfortunately, vibratory polishing is a material removal process, and its effect on the residual stress and cold work in the part is not well understood. In this paper, we explore the impact of prolonged vibratory polishing on shot peened coupons. The study focuses on the residual stress, cold work, and microstructure of the test coupons.

Axle-box accelerometers fitted to in-service vehicles are a cost-effective way of monitoring rail roughness that can supplant the use of manual trolleys and dedicated measurement trains. Unlike the latter, accelerometers measure the vibration caused by roughness rather than the roughness itself, and so require processing to derive the levels of roughness. This is challenging due to variations in track stiffness, vibration coupling between wheels, and the presence of wheel roughness. This paper describes the derivation of rail roughness from axle-box acceleration (ABA) using a frequency-domain technique based on a vehicle-track model comprising multiple flexible wheelsets on two rails. The model is continuously updated by identifying variations in track stiffness from the P2 resonance peak in the ABA measurements. Furthermore, the effect of wheel roughness is removed from ABA by using a comb filter. The new methods are evaluated using measurements of ABA and rail roughness from the London Underground. The results demonstrate the derivation of narrow-band roughness spectra within 10 dB of conventional measurements across most of the 40-1000 mm wavelength range, even with variations in track stiffness.

Optimizing the arrangement of tasks at workstations within the framework of assembly line balancing (ALB) is crucial for adhering to specific constraints and achieving defined objectives. The ALBP typically arises during the establishment of a new production line or when re-configuring an existing production system. Indeed, an improper allocation of tasks among the workstations can lead to downtime and unnecessary additional costs. Through a literature review, it was observed that there is a somewhat limited body of work on the energy aspect of the ALBP. Therefore, a new green balancing model was sought to be developed with a focus on this dimension. This paper presents a new variant so called Green assembly line resource assignment balancing problem (GrALRABP) that has a set of restrictions to be met and a fixed number of workstations. The goal of this ALBP model is to ensure that task precedence and machine compatibility constrains are followed while concurrently minimizing cycle time, hourly cost, and energy consumption of the current machines in the assembly line. Because ALBPs are classified as NP-hard problems, the resolution of this model was achieved using a eta heuristic approach based on the Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) algorithm. The validation of the proposed approach as carried out by comparing the results obtained by the proposed algorithm with those achieved using the e-constraint method on a literature-based example. This comparison demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
