Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an ensemble of technologies that have diverse capabilities. As a matter of fact, it appears that most of them are quite diverse and useful, also when applied in the field of manufacturing processes. However, the interactions between the agents involved in relevant manufacturing applications often is not straightforward, as the environment can be quite harsh and dynamic. Herein, a mapping is sketched between AI territories and manufacturing process-related operations. To this end, different aspects of the processes are considered, such as monitoring, modelling, optimization, design and preparation, as well as control, twinning and operation. For each one of these cases, AI technologies and workflows are matched, leading to a roadmap for future research. In this path, there are various specific challenges, many of which are mentioned here, as well. Specific examples from both conventional and non-conventional processes are considered, as well as focused illustrations of the possibilities that AI technologies can offer. In addition, the different manufacturing attributes, as guided by different strategies, are discussed in the context of the aforementioned concept. These include, among others, sustainability, human centricity and quality management. Finally, the role of services is discussed under the current context.

Multi-axial forging is a useful technique for producing ultrafine-grained structures in bulk materials bymeans of severe plastic deformation. The workpiece is subjected to a specific plastic strain in the multi-axial forging process by repeatedly upsetting along all three axes by rotating the sample by 90 degrees between the two passes;this leads to the accumulation of a large plastic strain in the material. The shape of the product does not change, as equal compressive strain is applied in all directions. Severe plastic deformation methods such as multi-axial forging can be used for producing lightweight high-strength Al alloys with ultrafine-grained structures. In this study, as-cast AA6082 has been multiaxially forged with a true strain of 0.1 in each direction, leading to a total effective strain of 0.3 in each cycle. The strain inhomogeneity from center to the surface has been predicted by a finite element simulation of the multi-axial forging with a Voce hardening model, and it has been correlated with an experimentally determined hardness variation. The peak loads in all of the passes have also been compared.

Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) is the latest approach for quality management (QM). It utilizes the full potential of Industry 4.0 technologies, and in return, can provide more efficient QM, achieving higher quality rates and using fewer resources, leading to sustainable manufacturing. Manufacturing systems are characterized by high uncertainty, and therefore, disruptive events will always be present, alongside inspection, preventive, or predictive maintenance, for example. To this extent, production rescheduling has become an inevitable and crucial implementation. To maintain costs and productivity within reasonable bounds while offering high-quality products, it is essential to utilize a dynamic scheduling tool, which can reschedule operations when these disruptive events occur. The current research effort is concentrated on determining the key parameters that affect the rescheduling problem and defining the implications of such an approach to the entire production system. The proposed approach will be validated through a series of simulations and comparisons with current practices.

A Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) is developed and evaluated for minimizing the vibrations of a three-story model building. A Magnetorheological (MR) damper is utilized in the building. Three sets of rules and two shapes of Membership Functions (MFs) are considered in this investigation. The story displacements, story accelerations, and inter-story drifts were employed to examine the controllers' effectiveness. The third rule set (R3) exhibited the best displacement, acceleration, and drift performance for the first and second stories, where the most significant reduction was achieved. Moreover, the second rule set (R2) achieved the most significant decrease in the story's drift and acceleration for the third story. A future study of additional input parameters and rulesets is recommended to optimize the controllers' performance.

To decarbonize supply chains, many countries have introduced carbon taxes, which levy taxes on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Carbon taxes are expected to reduce GHG emissions in supply chains by adding additional economic loads. In contrast, according to life cycle assessment, GHG emissions from material production can be recovered by recycling end-of-life (EOL) products since the GHG emissions for virgin material production are saved by using recycled materials. Thus, recycling contributes not only to reducing consumption of natural resources but also to reducing GHG emissions. To promote more environmentally friendly and economical recycling, one approach is a carbon tax refund based on the amount of recovered GHG emissions. Therefore, recyclers can obtain refunds of the carbon tax based on their recycled volume. This study models a reverse supply chain network with carbon tax refund determined by the material-based GHG emissions recovered through recycling EOL products. First, the reverse supply chain network is modelled to assess the GHG saving rate and cost using mathematical programming. The proposed bi-objective method determines the number of EOL products transported to recycling or disposal facilities to balance total GHG saving rate and cost. Next, the proposed design method is validated by numerical experiments. Finally, the effects by rate of carbon tax refund are examined.

In this paper, a three-dimensional model of a microchannel (MC) heat sink with different shape ribs in merging chambers (where the MCs are interrupted) is established. The effects of different shape ribs on the heat transfer performance of MC sinks are studied. The flow characteristics and heat transfer mechanism of MCs with different shape ribs in merging chambers are explained in details. By checking the average Nusselt number, the friction coefficient and the heat transfer enhancement factor of five different shape ribs (rectangular ribs, triangular ribs, diamond ribs, double-headed cylindrical ribs, and cylindrical ribs), it is concluded that the heat transfer performance of the diamond structure ribs is the best.

The rapid evolution of additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, has spurred the need to determine when this technology should be favored over conventional or subtractive manufacturing techniques. Selecting additive manufacturing for a given part hinges on its complexity, as it must offer an economic advantage over traditional manufacturing methods. This paper introduces a method for assessing the geometric complexity of parts intended for additive manufacturing. While the prevalent approach in most industries relies on surface area to volume ratio as an indicator of complexity, our study highlights its limitations and potential for misleading manufacturers. In response, we propose a novel method that leverages machining surface generation and scrap ratio to evaluate part complexity. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated through validation with real-world industrial parts and virtual manufacturing assessments, proving its superiority to the traditional surface area to volume ratio. One of the key advantages of our proposed method is its potential for automation, with the capability to analyze stereolithography (STL) files and estimate part complexity features. This automation has the potential to significantly reduce the cognitive load on additive manufacturing experts, making the technology more accessible and efficient. Overall, our research contributes to the critical decision-making process for selecting the most suitable manufacturing method, ensuring that additive manufacturing is chosen when it offers a distinct economic advantage driven by part complexity.

In order to cope with the issues of global warming and the depletion of natural resources, manufacturers need to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and consumption of natural resources economically. Upgrading and remanufacturing emerge as effective ways for mitigating both of GHG emissions and waste by conserving virgin material production with associated GHG emissions for assembly products. Hence, End-of-Life products should be upgraded or remanufactured based on their conditions and values. However, due to physical and value lifetimes, there are cases that upgrading or remanufacturing are not suitable. Part reuse and material recycling would be better ways rather than upgrading or remanufacturing at those cases. Moreover, even though disassembly is an essential phase for recovery options such as remanufacturing, upgrading, part reuse, and material recycling, it is costly due to labor costs for manual disassembly tasks. Therefore, life cycle option selection including remanufacturing, upgrading, reuse, and recycling needs to be conducted environmentally friendly and economically for sustainable manufacturing. This study proposes an upgrade-remanufacturing option selection for both material-based GHG emissions and profit adopting 01 integer programming. First, a bill of materials (BOM) is prepared. Next, the upgrade-remanufacturing option selection is formulated adopting 0-1 integer programming with. constraints, where the objective functions aim to maximize profit and the GHG saving rate. Finally, the proposed upgrade-remanufacturing option selection is validated.

Path planning algorithms are utilized in various fields to improve the efficiency of the defined tasks. Regarding extrusion based additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, an optimized path performs the same task in less time with higher surface quality and better mechanical properties. This paper proposes a continuous path planning algorithm for decreased manufacturing time and better surface quality of artifacts fabricated via extrusion-based AM. It is a versatile path-planning algorithm developed on Hierholzer's algorithm for directed graphs. It generates a continuous path for any given graph representing the infill pattern of the parts to be fabricated via material extrusion. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with respect to the conventional Hierholzer's algorithm and other similar algorithms over various cases. In the literature, complete elimination of u-turns is not observed so that the novelty of this work is to attain a continuous path planning algorithm that can eliminate both fast travels and u-turns. In addition to the advantages of continuous paths, the proposed method results in better surface quality due to its ability to omit u-turns during travel. The algorithm may also be used in laser-based AM technologies or any area coverage applications.

Force and moment measurement within road vehicles plays a break-through role in automotive engineering. Both wheel force transducers and instrumented hub carriers are considered in the paper. Both technologies have advantages and disadvantages. Active safety systems (ABS, ESP, up to full automated driving) are expected to be impacted by the measurement of forces and moments at the wheels. Friction potential evaluation and driver model development and monitoring are major field of research. Force and moment measurement technology may also be exploited for lightweight construction purposes. Promising technologies are the ones that don't need RF data transfer, providing low latency for data transfer and are resiliency against cyber-attacks.
