To ensure functional safety of vehicle dynamics controllers, monitoring functions are used to limit the effectiveness of lateral dynamic inputs to a safe, controllable level. For this purpose, driving situation dependent limits for maximum permissible lateral dynamic inputs are determined with the help of subject studies. To exploratively investigate limits of a steer-by-wire superposition function in a nonlinear driving situation, a subject study (N = 52) was conducted in a semi-dynamic driving simulator. This paper presents the study design and discusses the results obtained. A 4 x 4 within subject design including an additional baseline conditionwas used to investigate the independent variables steering angle fault and side slip angle. First, significant effects on the maximum lateral deviation and the integral of the side slip angle are demonstrated with a two-way ANOVA, thus proving the methodical approach. Second, limits for permissible additional steering input of a steer-by-wire system in an oversteering driving situation are determined from the obtained data.

A finite element numerical model and a semi-analytical model are used to analyse the influence of buildings on ground vibration from underground railways. The insertion loss of a building with four types of foundations is examined using a 3D finite element model. Additionally, a semi-analytical model is built to analyse the vibration of the ground with the influence of a building with a pile foundation. This model is divided into two parts: a finite element model that represents the building as a column-shell structure and a semi-analytical model that simulates the infinite free-field ground. The foundations can amplify or attenuate the ground vibration in different frequency regions. For an example case, both models give similar insertion loss results due to a building in the transmission path, although there are differences due to the modelling assumptions. The findings suggest that when predicting the ground surface response induced by an underground railway, the surrounding buildings should be included in the calculations to get more accurate results.

Localization of different noise sources in a high-speed train has been endeavored in the past with reasonable success. In most cases, this localization has been achieved by means of microphone arrays and also with the help of fixed or removable barriers. However, these techniques had the drawback of needing complex post-processing and frequently have complicated set-ups. Also, very often the assessment obtained with these methods has been predominantly qualitative, and not quantitative. High speed railways have the distinctive feature (with respect to conventional railways) of emitting significant amounts of aerodynamic noise. Aerodynamical noise levels emitted by different high-speed units depend on a number of design details which can significantly change emission values. High speed railway lines are increasingly spreading in modern countries where, simultaneously, environmental concerns about noise levels are also on the rise. Therefore, a practical methodology for assessing and comparing aerodynamic noise levels coming from high speed units has been declared as desirable both by international railway organizations such as UIC and national railway network managers. This article presents a quite simplified methodology capable of achieving a quantitative apportionment of noise coming from different directions in a high-speed railway pass-by.

State-of-the-art R&D in hydro-environmental engineering demands a synergistic combination of physical and numerical modeling techniques. In this regard, the open-source CFD code IITM-RANS3D has been developed in-house at the Department of Ocean engineering, IIT Madras. IITM-RANS3D is an application code geared toward wave-hydrodynamics and wave-structure-interaction (WSI) problems. The code is based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with multiple immiscible phases modeled using the volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique. For high-fidelity generation of a wide variety of waves, the code is one-way coupled with the fully nonlinear potential theory (FNPT) code IITM-FNPT2D also developed in-house at DOE, IITM. The hybrid model is capable of handling arbitrarily complex fixed/moving bodies through embedded boundary treatment based on the fast-fictitious-domain (FFD) method. In the present paper, we report on the bench-marking of IITM-RANS3D across various wave-hydrodynamics and WSI scenarios, accomplished over the course of two years. These include: solitary waves breaking over a plane-sloping beach as well as complex bathymetry, regular waves shoaling and interacting with a recurved seawall and focused waves interacting with a moving cylinder.

In remanufacturing, Reverse engineering (RE) tools and techniques could become essential in the rapid creation of digital 3D models of existing components, especially when drawings are no longer available. These models can be used to investigate potential remanufacturable parts, identify damages or defects and assist in the decision-making process for as-is rebuilding or redesigning of the part to improve performance. In this context, Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology is particularly well suited due to its capability to rapidly produce parts with minimal geometry constraints and at relatively low cost. This study proposes a methodological procedure based on the combined use of RE-AM to facilitate the remanufacturing decision-making process for better part performance and strategy. Moreover, through the use of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, damages can be automatically and objectively identified and quantified. An application case is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The prediction of the passby noise of trains, in the definition of ISO 3095, can be simplified by looking at how each source contributes to the global level. With some hypotheses, it is possible to write in a very simple way how the passby level of any train configuration depends on the passby level of each source type. This article describes an analytical method to extend known passby noise levels to any train configuration. Its application to numerical simulations is described in depth and compared to existing simulation and experimental results;application to specific measurement setups is only described. Even assuming the access to high computational resources, when using advanced, complex modelling and tools for noise predictions the bottleneck is often the availability of the user/acoustician. This paper presents a framework to pre-calculate passby noise levels with advanced modelling for specific trains, to later extrapolate them exactly to any other configuration of vehicles and sources.

Differential braking offers a promising approach to ensure lateral control of automated vehicles in the event of steering actuator failure. Braking interventions induce longitudinal forces on the wheel, which influence the vehicle's yaw motion and thus enable lateral control along a given trajectory. Within the scope of this paper, a road friction adaptive system for lateral vehicle control by differential braking on a dry, wet, snow- and ice-covered road is derived simulatively. The investigated friction coefficient adaption is implemented by a variable path planning and calculated on the basis of an estimated road friction coefficient. The driving situation considered is based on the severe lane-change maneuver according to ISO 3888-2 for the investigation of vehicle dynamics and road-holding ability. The limitation of the trajectory results from the maximum yaw rate and expands the trajectory's length for the different road friction coefficients.

Rail damper is a retrofit solution for excessive noise and vibration from the rail. Rigid Contact Tuned Mass Rail Damper (RCTMD), a new type of rail damper, can be tuned to rail resonance frequency for specific site requirements to address noise issues stemming from rail courrgation, rail pin-pin resonance (vertical and lateral directions) and P2 resonance. Current RCTMD could only be tuned to one frequency per oscillator. Multi-frequency vibration reduction requires extra oscillators. If additional oscillators are required, the project would become more costly, heavier, space consuming, and less overall damping efficient, which would have negative implications to the manufacturers and the users. This paper aims to develop a tuned mass damper that could simultaneously be tuned to both rail vertical and lateral pin-pin resonance (similar to 550Hz and similar to 1000Hz, respectively) at the same oscillator. Preliminary laboratory tests are performed with the patented inclined plane tuned mass damper. Vertical-to-lateral resonance frequency ratio of 1.2 is achieved. Further improvement will be made to achieve the target similar to 1000Hz and similar to 550Hz in vertical and lateral direction.

Planning of charging stations is becoming increasingly prevalent. Consequently, it is of paramount importance to assess their impact on traffic flow and, subsequently, their optimal positioning. To identify these optimal positions, microscopic traffic flow simulations represent an efficacious tool. Different positions can be trialed until an optimal solution is identified. The open-source microscopic traffic flow simulation tool SUMO would be an optimal choice for this purpose, but does not yet offer the possibility of efficiently implementing charging stations in its traffic networks. As part of a current research project, a novel method for implementing charging stations at their real location within the SUMO environment is presented. Exemplary locations are selected in the German city of Essen.

Accurate and reliable computer codes for neutronics are essential for nuclear reactor design and operation since they permit the simulation of neutron behavior inside the reactor core. These simulations are critical for anticipating the reactor's performance, safety, and efficiency. In order to ensure the safe operation of nuclear reactors and the advancement of new reactor technologies, the accuracy and reliability of these codes are of the utmost importance. The modeling and simulation codes' accuracy and reliability are tested using the Virtual Environment for Reactor Analysis VERA Core Physics Benchmark's problems. MASTER's neutronics model solves the space-time dependent neutron diffusion equations with the advanced nodal methods and DeCART2D a Deterministic Core Analysis based on Ray Tracing, have been developed in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) to design and analyze the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR). This study aims to validate the DeCART2D - MASTER code system for the successful completion of the calculations related to the Zero Power Physics Tests (ZPPT) of VERA pressurized water reactor that are carried out at the start of each fuel cycle startup. Several critical configuration estimates, and RCCA bank reactivity worths are among them. The calculation results are compared to ZPPT OF VERA benchmark.
