Life cycle costing (LCC) is a method of assessing the total cost of ownership of a durable item and has been used around the world for the last few decades. This paper investigates the issue of LCC of food technologies, and in particular of a milling plant. The main cost components of this plant are initial acquisition costs, operating costs, maintenance costs and end-of-life costs. An analytic model is developed under Microsoft ExcelT to quantify these cost components. The application of the model is then detailed for one component (i.e., the operating cost) taken as an example, while for the remaining components, we present the main results obtained from the LCC application but omit the detailed computational procedure, for brevity. Overall, outcomes show that the highest economic impact is due to the operating costs, while the remaining costs contributes to the LCC to a limited extent.

Erosion of material surface due to collisions with solid particles has become a challenge to several engineering fields. Therefore, it is necessary to effectively design radial-flow pumps that mitigate the sediment particles' clogging effect from impacting the machine's performance and reliability. This study aims to analyze and identify the clogging development of a newly designed submersible pumpusing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The particle trajectory was accounted Tabakoff-Grant erosion model for predicting the clogging impact. The experimental pump performance results obtained by this study were used to validate the existing computational results of the submersible pump. Pump results revealed a good agreement between the two marks, especially the head of the pump was obtained at a flow rate of 0.165 m(3)/min. When considering the motor power factor of 0.78, the pump efficiency was found to be 46%, and the test result was well-matched. Also, for combined cavitation-erosion, the performance characteristics of erosion rate density increase linearly. At a flow rate of 0.16 m(3)/min, the erosion rate density of the original model was more significant than the revised model. Furthermore, compared to the original model significantly reduced the adverse clogging effects on the impeller blades of the revised model.

Liquid desiccant cooling is a promising alternative to vapor compression cycle due to its lower electricity consumption. Regeneration process is the principal source of the overall energy consumption which aims to concentrate the diluted desiccant. Conventional direct/indirect regenerators use flowing air to remove the moisture and yield a relatively low thermal efficiency. Based on this, this paper presents a liquid desiccant regenerator which uses air gap membrane distillation to simultaneously concentrate the weak desiccant and produce potable water. A heat and mass transfer model is developed and validated to explore the regenerator performance under various operation conditions as well as the effects of heat transfer enhancement. The simulation results show that the regeneration rate and thermal efficiency increase remarkably with the rise in both the temperature and flow rate of the desiccant. Decreasing both the temperature and flow rate of the coolant can obtain an obvious increase in the regeneration rate but slight fall in the thermal efficiency. In addition, it is found that the convection inside the desiccant channel plays a dominant role in the overall heat transfer performance. By contrast, enhancing condensation heat transfer on the cooling plate surface has a negligible influence on the regenerator performance. This study provides a guideline for the design and optimization of the air gap membrane distillation based liquid desiccant regenerator.

Mixed convection heat transfer and pressure drop in a circular inclined solar air heater fitted with wavy tapes for assisting flow under uniform heat fluxes is carried out in transition flow regime using experimental and numerical technique. The working range of Reynolds number is 500-7005. Both experiments and simulations were carried out with three wavy tapes uniform wave ratio of 0.75, width ratio of 0.6, 0.7 and 0.8 and free length of 2000 mm at uniform heat flux of 2 kW/m(2). This study has investigated the effect of the wave ratio, heat flux and inclination angle of the tube on the mixed convection heat transfer and pressure drop process. The results obtained from the investigation show shifting in the transition flow regime. For plain horizontal channel, the transition begins at Reynolds number 2983 and ends at Reynolds number 3346. At a 15 degrees inclination angle, the transition begins at Reynolds number 3012 while ends at Reynolds number 3349. This is due to the buoyancy effect. At inclined position, the effect of buoyancy forces lessens which causes the transition to start at delayed Reynolds number. Along with this enhancement in the heat transfer and pressure drop was also observed. At the inclined position of 15 degrees, a slight decrease in theNusselt number was observed. A further decrease in the Nusselt number was observed when inclination angle is changed to 30 degrees. However, friction factor shows very minute appreciation when position is changed from horizontal (0 degrees) to inclined (30 degrees). Correlations were also developed to predict the Nusselt number and friction factor in laminar, transition and turbulent flow regime.

The demands of product individualization and reduced development times are an increasing challenge for current product and production system engineering, as customization processes are still a mostly manual task involving different software tools and paperwork. Due to their manual nature, they are error-prone, leading to long lead times and costly rework. Thus, efficient co-customization of products and their production systems must be enabled by common data models and continuously linked software tools. Complex mechatronic products such as aircraft cabins are more and more likely to be developed via a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach using Systems Modeling Language (SysML). In assembly system design, model-based development often relies on AutomationML, a modeling and data exchange format for plant engineering information. To combine these concepts, an approach for assembly system configuration based on a SysML-representation of the product and an AutomationML-represantation of the plant is proposed. After the customer configures a unique product version, the corresponding SysML model will be analyzed by the outlined configuration algorithm to determine necessary changes to the assembly system. Based upon an AutomationML library with digital representations of the available assembly system components and their behavior, these logical and parametric changes will be implemented in the instantiated assembly system model. Using AutomationML, configuration can not only take place on the top-level logical model, but also on specific robot or PLC programs. These can be then used for simulations generating information about assemblability and assembly times, allowing improved design decisions once fed back to the product engineers.

The present study brings forward a simulation-based study of the production process of a Portuguese bakery. The main goal is to analyse different production processes and propose improvements, through the use of discrete event simulation. A relevant set of data was collected, and four productive processes were selected to be modelled using Simio software (Simulation Modelling based on Intelligent Objects). The analysis of the developed models highlighted the need for improvements and different scenarios were created to this purpose. Among the obtained results, it was found that the adoption of mixed production scenarios allowed the increase of the production level while maintaining the current existing resources. In conclusion, this study highlighted the ability of the simulation technique to analyse manufacturing processes, throughout the creation of different scenarios, providing insights on the production process optimising the companies' productive performance.

Canadian Deuterium Uranium Nuclear reactors (CANDU) form an essential power generation source for Canada and a multitude of European countries. CANDU reactors are characterised by their use of deuterium oxide as coolant as opposed to conventional light water of carbon dioxide coolants used in most nuclear reactors. However, CANDU reactors suffer from deuterium oxide radiolysis - the splitting of coolant to deuterium and oxygen gas. This poses a major threat to the safe and economic operation of CANDU reactors over their lifetime. Hence, clear separation and recombining process of deuterium and oxygen back to deuterium oxide is essential. In light of this, this research paper proposes the first theoretical models of deuterium oxide and the deuterium oxide + oxygen + deuterium mixture present in CANDU reactors. The models of the pure components and mixtures were devised using the SAFTVR - Mie equation of state along with computational techniques to estimate the parameters required by the equation of state to generate the complete pure and mixture models. The models are used to predict crucial physical properties of deuterium oxide and the vapour-liquid mixture under standard operating conditions as well as CANDU operating conditions. The devised models demonstrate excellent accuracy, providing < 5% AAD for the pure deuterium oxide, oxygen and deuterium models as well as the mixture system. The aim of the devised models is to be used in shortlisting the possible separation and recombining techniques.

The stamping process plays a key role in several industries, namely the automotive industry. Although high strength steels have shown excellent mechanical properties, there are drawbacks related to their formability, which are associated with the appearance of defects that compromise product quality. These materials can show unpredictable responses due to variations in their chemical composition, heat treatment, and processing parameters. The main objective of this work is to identify and eliminate cracks that occur during the stamping process of metallic materials using experimental techniques. This analysis is carried out using bending tests to discover the optimum stamping conditions that maximize the performance of the materials by using Design of Experiments. As a result of the analysis the best material and stamping conditions were defined.

In this paper, the previously presented theoretical equations governing the utilization of a new sensor to measures peening intensity will be expanded to include the effect of impingement angle. The equations are derived from the Impulse-Momentum principle and use the input velocity, the coefficient of restitution, the media particle mass and the impact impulse time to determine the maximum impact force at any angle. The equations are verified with results from experimental testing at impingement angles of 85 degrees, 65 degrees, 55 degrees, 45 degrees and 35 degrees at five different input velocities using AWCR28 media propelled from a Shockform designed single particle cannon. Results show that for all angles, the sensor output offers a good linear correlation with the input velocity. The sensor can be used to assess the quality of the particle stream when peening at different angles and with different media flow rates. Examples of sensor output graphs will be presented showing how collisions between incoming and outgoing media particles can affect the distribution of impacts on a part.

This paper presents a study on image-based incremental learning for part recognition of used automotive parts, also known as cores. The use of Machine Learning (ML) in the recognition of used parts has proven to be effective in suggesting Original Equipment Number (OEN) based on images and logistics data of a core. This leads to a four-eye process where the worker and ML interact through an assistance system. In reverse logistics, the spectrum of parts handled is constantly changing, making it difficult to have a "complete" image or sensor-based data set. The study focuses on the ramp-up phase of an ML implementation project in a real-world automotive core sorting station. There are two stations equipped with sensors such as RGB cameras. The sorted parts were acquired over a period of one year. Incremental learning was employed to cope with the growing dataset and the growing number of classes to be identified without retraining a model from scratch. Open source and state-of-the-art incremental ML learning methods such as POD-Net and Foster were tested against the common joint training approach used for most benchmarks in computer vision. The best-fitting open-source method for this problem was identified as POD-Net used with a self-supervised pretrained ResNet50. For the ramp-up of an ML-based core recognition a combination of incremental learning and joint training was found to be useful. It starts learning from a small number of digitized parts (14 classes), while maintaining a high recognition accuracy rate throughout the year, with a final class count of 100 (an increase of approx. 600%), which is a subset of a real application problem. The results of this study show that the proposed method is efficient, plastic, and energy-saving. Thus, it is a promising approach for the recognition of used automotive parts.
