In the present paper, the design and the evaluation of the environmental and economic impacts of a CFRP tubular structural component, employed for supporting passenger seats of commercial aircraft, realized with the innovative FW process, were performed. At first, a simulation of the winding process was conducted to realize the component layers, and then a FEM analysis was performed to identify the optimal layering of the tubular structure to support the defined loads. Then, Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Costing methodologies were employed to assess the environmental and economic impacts, with a "from cradle to grave" approach: all life cycle phases of the analysed component were included (from raw materials extraction to the disposal phase). A comparison between the CFRP tubular structure and traditional aluminium alternative was investigated to identify the most sustainable solution. From the analysis emerged that the CFRP tubular beam resulted in lower environmental impacts than the traditional alternative, mainly due to the reduced weight. However, the cost evaluation identified the CFRP beam alternative as the most expensive solution.

The Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology and Digital Twin technologies have emerged as potential solutions to address significant challenges across various sectors of the built environment, particularly in facility management (FM). While commercial solutions are already available, and numerous researchers have proposed their approaches, there is a lack of consensus in terms of usage, content, and technical implementation. These solutions typically rely on specific vendors and software, often offering a basic 3D interface for visualizing spaces and conditions. However, their full potential has yet to be realized. This contribution seeks to offer a condensed framework and illustrate its application in facility management. It outlines requirements for BIM specifications and field data, and demonstrates how the adoption of a Digital Twin can transform building maintenance and asset management practices.

The structures presented in this paper demonstrate that large (8' x 2' x 1'), lightweight, and strong structures are indeed manufacturable through industrial large scale polymer additive manufacturing. The production experiments done to manufacture these structures resulted in process defects that were identified and documented. Processing failures during manufacturing prompted the modification of several process control parameters (layer height, material choice, bed temperature) and post-processing techniques (annealing). This yielded five specimens, each with a unique treatment modification combination. This paper describes an experimental setup for analyzing the effect of these various processing treatments on large-scale additively manufactured thermoplastic structures. Specifically, it presents and compares the uniaxial compression performance results of ABS chopped fiber composite structures made with different processing treatments. Force-displacement experiments were conducted to determine and compare the effects of such processing modifications on the uniaxial compression performance of the different specimens. The data are also analyzed for transient behavior related to plastic deformation and creep. These data indicate that the large additively manufactured polymer composite structural specimens are stiff and strong in bulk. However, the authors do not draw significant conclusions about the effects of the individual processing treatments themselves. The experimental setup and process of identifying and characterizing significant performance effects of manufacturing modifications are generally useful and applicable to other large scale additively manufactured structural products.

This paper presents an optimization analysis of the geometrical accuracy of metal binder jetting products. An orthogonal array L9 was designed using Taguchi method to study four process parameters (printhead speed, dark body, powder applicator speed and shell thickness) at three levels. Printed parts were measured by a coordinate measuring machine, and parallelism error was evaluated, both in planes aligned with binder injection and with powder spreading direction. Samples geometry was characterized by a squared through hole to evaluate differences in external and internal features. In the nine experiments, the parallelism varied in a range between 0.01 and 0.04 mm. No significant difference was observed in relation to plane direction and feature type, while parallelism tended to decrease with the increase in the sample's distance from the printing platform. A grey relational analysis was employed to optimize process parameters, in order to improve the geometrical accuracy. Through the analysis of means of grey relational grade, it was found that powder applicator speed has the highest effect on response variables, while printhead speed has the lowest contribution. The optimal parameters combination was determined to effectively improve the quality of binder jetting products.

The application of federated learning (FL) in industrial settings offers promising advancements in maintaining data privacy while collaboratively training machine learning models. This study focuses on the comparative analysis of federated image classification versus locally trained models within a shared production environment. Specifically, we explore the classification of windshields in truck cabins, which is a crucial task for quality inspection in manufacturing of trucks. Our research involves four clients, each producing different types of truck cabins and research based on FL process between them. Various deep learning architectures, including VGG19, ResNet50, InceptionNetv3, DenseNet121, and EfficientNetv2-s, were evaluated under a FL framework implemented using the FLOWER framework. A custom plain averaging strategy was used for weight aggregation. The global model's performance was assessed using a combined test set from all clients and compared against models trained locally by individual clients. The results highlight the effectiveness of FL in enhancing model generalization and adaptability to new product variations in industrial applications, promoting its adoption for collaborative quality inspection tasks.

Wear and reduction of blowers' efficiency with moving working bodies makes it suitable to use jet devices in many technological processes. Using swirling flow properties, such as pressure reduction on the axis, created vortex ejectors, but their energy performance and efficiency were reduced. So, they required further optimization of geometrical parameters and study of flow in them. This paper aims to optimize the geometrical dimensions of the vortex chamber and supply channels to improve the energy performance of a homogeneous medium vortex chamber ejector based on design experiment methods. After experimental studies and verification of the mathematical model, the planning of the numerical experiment was carried out, the factors and the target function (ejector efficiency) were selected, and the regression equation was obtained, which allowed to determine the maximum efficiency and the geometrical parameters of the ejector corresponding to it. The numerical experiment was carried out based on solving the equations of fluid motion using the OpenFoam software. In contrast to the vortex chamber ejector with a drainage channel, it was determined that the height of the vortex chamber has a significant effect on the ejector efficiency and should be minimized. Along with linear effects, interaction effects were also significant. To increase efficiency, it is necessary to strive to decrease vortex chamber height and supply tangential channel diameter by decreasing the diameter of the vortex chamber.

Manufacturing industries today are undergoing a formidable process of transition to completely new and sometimes unfamiliar modes of operation. This process is also known as the 5th Industrial Revolution and involves the implementation of a set of technologies including, among others, digital technologies such as XR-Extended Reality, AI, Big Data and Digital Twins. In particular, Extended Reality, which encompasses the full spectrum of advanced 3D models and techniques for visualizing and interacting environments, is already a standard de facto method at some stages of the product life cycle. In the design phase of complex systems, for example, it supports designers, other business functions and end users in the collaborative analysis of complex assemblies. While these technologies are supported as enablers for the aforementioned transition in industries, their use at the academic level remains focused on the goal of creating more interactive educational experiences and enhancing understanding of complex concepts. In contrast, this paper analyzes the use of XR in mechanical engineering curricula with the goal of identifying the main challenges for creating advanced digital skills for engineers and empowering them to integrate such knowledge into industrial process optimization. The results of a focus group with students in the Master of mechanical engineering program reveal the need to support young people in understanding the benefits of using such technologies in their work.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common respiratory disorder characterised by episodes of complete or partial obstruction of the upper airways during sleep. Nearly half of adults with OSA have comorbid Sleep Bruxism (SB), a condition in which a person grinds, gnashes, or clenches the teeth during sleep. However, sparse literature exists about the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of mandibular advancement devices (MADs) for OSA therapy under a biting load. This manuscript presents a FEA to evaluate the effects of MADs (i.e., stress and displacement on periodontal ligaments and teeth) under a typical clenching load due to SB (i.e., 650 N), compared to the only OSA condition (baseline). Findings have demonstrated that the teeth stress and displacement are strictly related to the load magnitude and the MAD geometry (plateaux and relative position between the splints). Indeed, the applied load shifts the maximum values of stress and displacement from the MAD connecting sites to the contact area of the splints, increasing the stress in the anterior region of the maxilla. Despite this study being developed on one single patient and one single MAD model, this preliminary investigation can provide useful insights into the consequences of MAD usage in people affected by SB.

Every year, new requirements are imposed on modern industrial production, which relate to improving technological processes and product quality. A special place in new developments is occupied by research devoted to increasing the performance and durability of the cutting part of tools in automated production conditions. The authors have developed a new approach to improving the recognition quality of cutting part tool states with machine learning models. The article aims to create a new combined approach to improve the recognition quality of tool states with the machine learning models used. The scientific novelty consists of developing a segmentation method for automating the cutting part of tools segmentation that considers different features of cutting part tools with the machine learning models used. Practical usefulness consists in improving the quality of recognition of cutting part tool states with the machine learning models used. The vector-difference approach is used in the work to determine textural features. This approach makes it possible to obtain a specific texture feature - as a vector transformation of the features of different textures- based on vector algebra.

Aquafarms, often located in remote areas, face challenges accessing reliable power sources. Existing renewable solutions, such as wind and solar, are heavily limited by unpredictable weather conditions and can only be used in some scenarios. However, a more predictable energy resource exists in ocean wave energy. Addressing this, our research aimed to design a wave energy converter meeting specific criteria: producing at least 100 W on average, storing electricity, integrating with existing infrastructure, and being effective in calm wave conditions. A point absorber wave energy converter (WEC) emerged as the optimal solution through ideation and simulations, focusing on capturing heave and surge motion for power generation. The chosen concept, a buoy equipped with a helix design moving along a rail, was initially prototyped for wave flume testing at a small scale. While successful, improvements were identified-increasing the height-to-width ratio and minimizing friction in the mechanism. Iteratively, a larger prototype incorporating a gearbox for enhanced speed was developed and tested, demonstrating proof of concept. Producing up to 3 watts per kg of moving mass in laboratory testing, our innovative approach shows promise in providing sustainable and reliable power solutions for remote aquafarms.
