Shot peening is a common surface treatment technique used to improve the fatigue life of aerospace materials such as Titanium-64. However, shot peening increases the surface roughness of the part and hence, an additional vibratory polishing process is usually employed as a post-treatment step to reduce the surface roughness. Unfortunately, vibratory polishing is a material removal process, and its effect on the residual stress and cold work in the part is not well understood. In this paper, we explore the impact of prolonged vibratory polishing on shot peened coupons. The study focuses on the residual stress, cold work, and microstructure of the test coupons.

This research investigates the acoustic performance of double-wall structures featuring porous layers through a combined approach of Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations and metamodel-based sensitivity analysis. The primary objective is to enhance the acoustic transmission efficiency by finding the parameters with the most significant impact on the system's vibro-acoustic response. Initially, the system is meticulously modeled using the Finite Element Method. Subsequently, a chaos polynomial metamodel is introduced to approximate the complex solutions obtained from the finite element simulations. Finally, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis using polynomial chaos expansion is conducted, facilitating the calculation of Sobol indices. These indices play a pivotal role in ranking the selected mechanical, acoustic, and geometric parameters according to their respective contributions to sound transmission. This comprehensive approach provides invaluable insights into the complex system of double-wall structures incorporating porous layers. Furthermore, it establishes a robust framework for effectively optimizing their acoustic performance across diverse engineering applications.

A very compact and a low operation cost microwave ECR ion source is being constructed for the ion injector line in the multi-purpose low-energy, ELASR storage ring facility at the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The compact ECR ion source can deliver single-charge ions with an energy up to 50 keV and a beam current up to 50 mu A. The plasma in the ECR chamber is drivenwith a simple transmitter antenna, which makes the overall size of ion source relatively small. Due to the reduction of the ion source size and type of the required microwave power which allows the source to be operated without high-voltage platform, the overall cost of the system is significantly minimized. In this contribution, the mechanical design, modeling of the ECR ion source will be introduced. The simulation of the ion beam from the ECR through the LEBT injector line will presented.

Towards the transition to automated driving, lateral stability of the vehicle represents a key requirement to guarantee the safety of passengers and vulnerable road users, especially during emergency operating conditions where nonlinearities arise. The present paper aims at investigating the effect of road banking angle on vehicle plane motion stability. To perform this analysis, a pure lateral nonlinear double track model is numerically derived for an oversteering vehicle. Lateral load transfer and its distribution among the axles are included for exploiting the tyre saturation region. The stability analysis is conducted by searching for the vehicle steady-state conditions and deriving the linearised equations around the equilibrium points. Moreover, the phase-plane plot is adopted to draw the states trajectories and to identify potential unstable regions. Finally, the bifurcation analysis as function of the road banking angle is investigated to highlight possible change of the phase portrait topology. The results show that a saddle-node bifurcation may occur when the vehicle is negotiating a certain level of bank road angle, affecting the vehicle yaw stability region.

Large gas bubbles separated by the liquid slugs are the main characteristic of the slug flow regime. We have analyzed the stagnant Taylor bubble in the vertical isothermal turbulent counter-current flow with high speed videos at 100 to 800 frames per second. A single Taylor bubble was captured in each experiment through dynamical balance of the bubble drag in the downward liquid flow. Bubbles of around two to six diameters length were observed in the pipe of 26mmdiameter with liquid Reynolds numbers in front of the bubble around 6000. Video frequencies at around 400 Hz were found sufficient to capture all temporal fluctuations of the bubble interface. Algorithms for two-phase interface recognition have been developed and applied on the images of the cap and the body of the Taylor bubbles. We have observed asymmetric Taylor bubbles of bullet-train shape with the thinnest liquid film on the belly of the bullet-train shape bubble. Even the long time averaging of up to 10 min did not produced axisymmetric time-averaged shape of the bubble in turbulent liquid flow. Azimuthal position of the bubble's belly is randomly determined during the injection of the bubble into the test section. In addition, dynamics of the tiny disturbance waves with tenth of mm amplitudes has been tracked along the interface of the Taylor bubbles. Cross-correlations of time-dependent interface fluctuations were measured at different spatial positions and used to determine propagation speeds of the traveling interface waves.

Control cables are crucial in automobiles, facilitating door and window operation, as well as the engagement of the handbrake and accelerator. The terminals of these control cables are small die-cast parts typically manufactured from light and low-melting point alloys, predominantly zamak. During the injection process, issues related to the heating of the injection nozzle are common, leading to challenges in extracting the control cable terminal from the injection mold. This work aims to develop a new solution for heating zamak alloy injection nozzles by electromagnetic induction for the manufacture of control cable terminals. Heating is normally carried out by electric resistors, which do not assure precise control of the components' temperature or a rapid response to variations in the injection nozzle temperature. An induction heating solution was proposed in this work as replacement with a frequency of 155 kHz and power of 410W, in which the electric current is transmitted by an external circuit to a multi-coil solenoid-shaped inductor, which is ideal for workpieces with cylindrical geometry, and the temperature is measured by a pyrometer. The necessary temperature provided to the injection set to assure the required 550 degrees C in the injection nozzle was estimated by the Finite Element Method as 600 degrees C. The calculated return-on-investment was shortly below 13 years.

In recent years, manufacturing has been undergoing major changes in search of more flexible and intelligent solutions, powered by Industry 4.0. While automation is what drove previous progress in industry, not every process can be automated, therefore, there is still a need for humans to carry out more complex tasks. Thus, in order to increase productivity and efficiency, while maintaining flexibility, robots can assist operators in their tasks rather than replace them. This paper proposes techniques for achieving seamless Human - Robot Collaboration (HRC), with wearable robots equipped with cognitive abilities that make them aware of their environments and the tasks the operator is performing. The main focus is on semi-active exoskeletons with adjustable torque and how they can be made autonomous. Their awareness is powered by computer vision techniques, mainly using anRGB-Dcamera and can automatically adjust the level of assistance they provide to the operator based on what they perceive, rather than having the operator control them directly. Consequently, they do not only improve the workload of the operator, but this assistance is offered without requiring specific actions from the user. This solution mainly focuses on the shipbuilding industry and the various tasks the workers have to perform in which exoskeletons can aid them. Finally, a welding use case is presented demonstrating the various functionalities.

Sustainable transport research includes a range of real-life issues related to low-carbon/carbon-neutral mobility. To our knowledge, sustainable transport offers an interdisciplinary approach, where relevant solutions are developed, such as in the environmental, industrial and energy areas. As the research areas in transport are vast, in this paper we present the key concepts with the greatest potential for growth within the academic community. The disclosure of key concepts may enable researchers to justify their options in sustainable transport, deepen their knowledge and move forward with their research. To do so, this paper performs a systematic literature review using PRISMA statement. The research findings identified six dimensions and focused on electromobility, micromobility and intermodal transport, which have played a pivotal role in sustainable transport. The need to deepen knowledge on the aforementioned topics should be considered timely, as it can influence the mitigation of climate risk and can have positive implications in the operationalization of the dynamics of cities.

Modern companies rely heavily on industrial equipment, ensuring by this way their operation under optimal conditions is paramount. Industrial maintenance significantly contributes when management adopts an aiming loss reduction philosophy. Maintenance's primary purpose is the organisation of the information to implement in the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and analyse storage costs of spare parts, aiming to lower the number and cost of spare parts in the warehouse. Moreover, it improves effectiveness and efficiency without losing the quality of the service. The developed work focused on creating a framework to analyse and implement internal procedures, storage, and technical support for a warehouse management model of spare parts. The main objective was to analyse existing material through screening, identification, study and removal of obsolete spare parts, promoting the reduction of losses and continuous improvement. To validate the model, 27 pieces of equipment out of 191 were analysed and, 200 spare parts references from the maintenance warehouse were associated with the respective equipment.

Structural fuse mechanisms such as the strong column-weak beam concept, fasteners, and base isolation are typically integrated into structural elements to dissipate seismic energy exerted during earthquakes. Under-designed footing, also known as rocking footing, has been identified as one of the most effective design alternatives for isolating the superstructure from the supporting soil medium. The objective of the present study is to analyze midrise reinforced concrete frame structures on slight and heavy rocking footings and compare their responses to those of conventionally designed footings. From the nonlinear time history analysis, it has been determined that the induced moment owing to seismic action decreases by 20% for the slight rocking footing and by 50% for the severe rocking footing. In addition, there was a maximum increase in footing settlement on the order of 25-80% for footing designs with slight and heavy rocking footing, respectively. However, the settlement did not exceed permissible limits as mentioned in Indian standards. Significant rocking roof displacement is observed for dense and extremely dense soil conditions, which lowers flexural deformation in structural members. Consequently, the provision of a rocking footing demonstrates positive responses by reducing the structural demand and raising the demands on the supporting soil medium.
